question about 12-string guitars
« on: 04 Feb 2006, 11:47 »

I'm looking to buy a 12-string acoustic, and so I'd like advice. I've been playing 6-string for a couple of years. My price range is probably $400 and under. I tend to like lowish action, light-gauge strings (elixirs), and I play mostly fingerpicking music.

If I had the money I would probably get a Taylor, but I only have about $400

I'm not sure if this is the place for this, but any help would be awesome :-)

Do you want recommendations of what guitars to buy? I can't help you.

But fingepricking on 12 string is VERY tricky to begin with. You've got two strings rather than one each pick you do. Low actions are kinda tricky on 12-strings as well, I think.

I can already play (and fingerpick) with a 12-string. I just don't know which to buy. It's not as easy for me to discriminate between models as with 6-string guitars.

I have a Seagull 12-string which is really nice, but I can't play it for crap because my hands don't seem to be strong enough. I'd be willing to sell it to you if you're interested; it cost me about $400 so you could certainly have it for less than that. I guess just PM me if you're interested? I left it at home in Maryland so hopefully my mom would be willing to ship it for me.

Edit: It's this guitar, although it's an older model (of course) and I think it may be just an S12 instead of an S12+, whatever that may mean. The picture on that site looks virtually identical to mine, though.

I actually did try a Seagull S12, but did not like it. In fact, there was a Yamaha in the same store for 2/3rds the price that seemed much better. And generally I don't like Yamaha guitars.

I can personally vouch for good Yamaha 12 string accoustics.

Ovation are nice, but can be pricey.

And look like crap in the eyes of many.

Plus they tend to be bowlback, which is a bitch if you're sitting down.
