Fun Stuff > BAND
Canadian music.
darkhorizons:
So I'm doing this media studies project on the rise of Canadian music into the mainstream in the last few years. I've covered the basics. The whole country music thing, the whole OMG ARCADE FIRE thing, brushed the surface of the Montreal music scene's rising popularity. What I'm looking for is another angle, per se. I'm so clouded by my own musical preferences (and laziness) that it's getting difficult.
So I pose this question: Good Canadian music, mainstream or otherwise? Any genre.
negative creep:
there's godspeed you! black emperor. can't think of any other canadian bands right now.
Paper Beats Rock:
GYBE and the spin-off bands- A Silver Mount Zion (and various versions), Set Fire To Flame, Fly Pan Am. I hate to link to wikipedia but what the hell, check out Constellation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constellation_Records
or there's the more general http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_music
If you need a quote to kick off with my favourite quote about Canada is -
“The tragedy of Canada is that it had a chance to end up with French Cuisine, English Culture, and American Technology, but ended up with English Cuisine, American Culture, and French Technology”
Gryff:
Is that a question?
Are you looking for contemporary stuff? The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, err, lots of other ones that I can't think of right now...
darkhorizons:
Yeah, especially contemporary stuff. Like... last 5-6 years kind of thing at least.
Oh and Paper beats rock - what's that quote from? Anything in particular?
