Man, don't know how I forgot about Russian Ark.  That was technically an astonishing achievement - but as a piece of cinema, it left me a little cold.  Although the short scene during the siege of St. Petersburg in World War II I found very moving.

burnt by the sun is absolutely mind-blowing, but is like the extent of my knowledge. i'll try download some of the stuff you suggested, tho - i'll let you know what i think if i'm succesful.

I've only ever seen Nightwatch. Which was stupidly ace. Even the subtitles were sexy!

In my book, you can't go wrong with Tarkovsky or Eisenstein.
