Hey, i was just wondering, does anybody know whether he's really going to go through with this album-for-every-state thing, or not? I heard today that he wasn't-from Wikipedia, the repository for all knowledge and truth, no less. Just curious if anybody else knew anything.

I don't think he was every planning to do a whole album for each state. I read somewhere that he'd joked that Rhode Island might just be a 7-inch single.

I was actually hoping for texas. i'd like to see what he makes of it, much as it sucks. but it'd be totally awesome if he did all fifty.

He doesn't have the talent.

His albums are already so long and drawn out and slow. He could make 40 minute good albums, but instead he makes 80 minute bad ones.

I think the official word is that no one really knows, he sorta acts half serious about the whole thing. Fifty albums is a hell of a lot though. His stuff all sucks pre-Illinoise so hopefully he can keep writing good ones.

It'd be interesting to hear an album about your state just to see if there was a song about your town on there. If there's ever an Iowa album it will likely include:
1) Corn
2) Hogs
3) Grant Wood
4) The fact that Buddy Holly died in this state.

Maryland would be a good choice, we have the sea, mountains, farms, the Navy, and a sorts of good material.

On the other hand, I really think the Washington DC album would have to be rap/hip-hop. I mean, seriously Sufjan's schtick just wouldn't work here. Plus I really really want to see him rap!

It's interesting that you decided to post that comment, because I checked the original post in this thread and it didn't say "Please tell me how much you hate Sufjan Stevens, because I obviously hate him too and wanted to hear all about it, so talking about how you don't like him wouldn't be trolling at all."

If he did do it, he'd probably be about 80 years old at least by the time he was finished. I think maybe he should consider combining some states for brevity.

Perhaps an album that has one song each for a bunch of states (y'know, just the crappy states) would speed up the process a bit. He could name each song after the state just so it'd be clear. Rad.

I do think the albums about states idea is cool, though.

he could just break it down into regions and on each region album have the states for song tracks. 50 CDs sounds like a waste of time.

In interviews he's always said that he's aiming to do all 50, but knows he won't. Aim for the stars reach the moon sort of thing.

the rumors were that NJ is next. I think the project is bollocks but if he pulls out even a quarter of the states i'd be amazed.

I like that idea about wyoming, though i've always liked that state.

Texas, though, i doubt would contain my hometown...though that would be freaking awesome.

Or at least one of the nearby towns...that would be really cool. It woud bring some much needed coolness, actually.

Texas though, would probably contain stuff about the Alamo or about old rock'n'rollers being born here.

And also pecans, can't forget pecans!

This was posted on Stereogum a while back. It is pretty much a gossip piece, but you can check out and judge it for yourself:

"He likes making music, but says he's going to take a big break from it. He's the anti-artist and very uninterested in keeping up as a musician. He wants to write or work on a book for the next couple of years."

Of course, he has already put out a new track on a recent compilation, so it's very likely that this is a bunch of BS.

But how would it be to finally finish one album for every state? Like, at the end, where there's nothing left to do? It's just such a grande undertaking.

There is really only so much you can sing about certain states. Montana, for example.

But there are some that have a rich legacy that would translate well into music. Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia are just three, off the top of my head.

(I'm a bit of a closet zydeco fan, which may have influenced that first choice.)

Kansas is more interesting than you think. They, believe it or not, have a long history of Leftist radicalism. They had Anarchists, populists, socialists and progressives before anyone else in the US. The state was basically formed as a way to combat the spread of slavery. Only in the last few decades have they gone completely ass backwards.

Theres at least an EP there I think.

Oh yeah, there's some stuff here, but they certainly don't embrace it or teach any of it ever. Really, the majority that I've heard was of the whole Bleeding Kansas Lwarence thing.
