Since we've had these for basically every other instrument, we should one for the bass.

I am fully aware that this is going to turn into a Les Claypool thread, but who cares?

John Myung (Dream Theater, Platypus, Jelly Jam)

Geddy friggin' Lee (Rush)

Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Iced Earth, Testament, Sadus, among others)
Come on, he uses a fucking fretless bass and still tears it up.

Stu Hamm (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Solo)

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)

Tony Levin (too many to name, most notably King Crimson, Yes and Liquid Tension Experiment)

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
Couldn't find a good picture of him with a bass.

Lemmy Kilmister (Hawkwind, Motorhead)

Roger Waters (Pink Floyd, solo)

Billy Sheehan (Steve Vai, David Lee Roth)

John Entwistle (RIP) (The Who)

And of course,

Les Claypool (Primus, and I don't feel like listing all the others cuz their titles are really long)

And that's all I can think of right now.

Steve Kille (Dead Meadow)

Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)

Jaco Pastorius

Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, QOTSA, The Dwarves, Mondo Generator)

Dickie Peterson (Blue Cheer)

Carson Binks (Parchman Farm)

Jack Bruce (Cream)

Not pictured (because I couldn't find any):  Googe (Masters of Reality), Chris Ross (Wolfmother), Van Conner (Screaming Trees)

Justin Chancellor - Tool (though he doesn't look anything like I remember him)

Doe - Mobstar (I have no idea what his last name is, but he is an awesome shred machine. I just wish I'd gotten to Billy Sheehan before anyone else did though :()

And last but not least, Paul Mccartney. I know his early post-beatles stuff sucked, but almost everything he did with the Beatles was fantastic melodic bass, and some of his newer solo stuff is pretty awesome as well

Oh no.  You jus had to do this.  First off, I second Jaco.  Honestly there are no other electric bass players out there for me.  His sense of melody, rhythm, phrasing and just general musicality are just so incredible that nobody even comes close, not even Sean Malone:

Then, there's always Francis "Rocco" Prestia from Tower of Power:

Now for upright players, because that's my instrument (I play electric, but I can't do any of the extended techniques native to electric, plus I don't play it much).
The late, great Paul Chambers (even though his intonation wasn't sterling)

Ron Carter.  One of the best backing guys ever (loved everything he's been behind), but I have one of his albums as a bandleader and I am not impressed.  It's well-played and there's nothing really wrong with it except the fact that nothing really happens.  It's almost as if he planned it to be background music.

Dave Holland.  Dave Holland Quintet is one of my favorite groups ever to exist.  Their Extended Play: Live at Birdland is one of my favorite albums ever.

The incredible Charles Mingus.  Nothing more about him needs to be said, really.

Chris Wood from MMW is pretty good, and there's this one bass fill on A Go-Go (with John Scofield), the first track (title track) that puts him in this list with everyone else.  It's that good.  His solo on "Last Chance to Dance Trance, Perhaps" is probably my favorite bass solo ever, too.

Finally, the greatest classical solo bassist ever to live (in my opinion); Edgar Meyer.  Find his recording of Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites.  Incredible.

I pretty much second all of Storm's and Jaco. Seriously. However, you all should be ashamed of yourselves. You all forgot about the fat bastard behind Praxis (and a good portion of Buckethead's career):

BILL LASWELL (Praxis, Solo, about 15,000,000 Collaborations, etc).

EDIT: Fuck, we forgot Geezer Butler, too! I'm totally going to post a picture:

EDIT #2: I just noticed! In that picture, Geddy Lee is wearing converse! Haha!

I didn't put Geezer on mine because frankly, I don't think he's that great of a bassist. Competent, for sure, but far from one of my favorites.

And Kai, I think you need to dig up the Informative thread and do Praxis for me. Or put up a song on Forced Listening. Whichever works.

I just cant believe i forgot these two bass players:

Tony Grey (Hiromi, solo, Far From Blue, David Fiuczinski Kif, Oli Rockberger Band)
I chated with him a bit after the Hiromi concert last month here. He's really a cool guy, explained to me about his basses and stuff.

Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine, Isotope, Pip Pyle's Equipe Out, solo)
I love his work on Soft Machine's Third, Forth and Fifth.
When I need to construct a bass line for a song I somtimes "steal" some of his work..
My fav' progressive rock band is Soft Machine.

Crash McLarson (The Aquabats!)

Chris Bauermeister (Jawbreaker, Horace Pinker)

R: Dave Lerner (Ted Leo & the Pharmacists) (also in this picture, Chris Wilson, who is a kickass drummer)

in the back, holding the bass: Royce Nunley (ex-Suicide Machines)

and their current bassist, Rich Tschirhart, ain't bad, either:

Tsuyoshi Kawakami (Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Tsuyoshi Kawakami & His Moodmakers)

Suke (Bleach)

okay, nothing really all that flashy (except maybe Suke) but that's my list.

In response to that, I'm going to say that Jason Newstead was good, but not anywhere near a suibtalbe replacement.  Plus a lot of the songwriting awesomeness was gone, because Cliff's basslines were boss.

Yeah, Jason Newstead doesn't get nearly enough recognition. He's a good bassist, but he's constantly measured by how much worse he is than Cliff.

The word "forget" implies that we would have put him on.  I mean, Flea is competent in a world where few bassists are, as a result, he is worshipped as a god, when really he's merely acceptable.  I'm glad he's out there sticking up for the bass, but on the other hand, he's not really doing anything special.
