I actually haven't seen Planet of the Apes... looked eeh.

My favorite films of his are probably Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas. I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well, but the squirrel's nuts joke surprised me a bit. I expect a wee bit more from him, haha.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was ace! (apart from the slight "americanisation" of some bits.....or maybe that was just me)

I wanna see Corpse Bride but if I go to the cinema I've got to take my little sister and brother (ages 7 and 6). Dya think it'd scare them? Or more importantly, is it worth seeing? (I've heard mixed reviews)

He's got an excellent artistic eye, that's for sure... but I've never been too happy with the pacing in any of his films.

He's unique, that's for sure.

I didn't know who Tim Burton was when I saw Planet of The Apes, so when someone told me later I was shocked. He makes so many awesome movies that I wouldn't expect that kind of rubbish from him.

Indeed, Planet of the Apes was a massive, horrible low point for him.  Thankfully, since that atrocity he's redeemed himself with Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, and Big Fish (yet to see The Corpse Bride).  And then of course, there's the classics.   The Nighmare Before Christmas was just absolutely amazing.

I'm a really big fan of Nightmare.  Wow.  Elfman did great music for that, too, and stop motion animation worked fantastically for it.  I loved it.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.. I know some people weren't really big fans of it, but I liked that one a lot too.  The way the sets are is insane...

Has anyone else noticed the way he uses colors?  I believe he has a set of colors that he'll let them use in a given set.. and it seems to work really well.  (i.e. the transition from black/gray/orange Halloween Town to the extremely colorful Christmas Town, and again in Charlie with the transition from the outdoors to inside the room with the chocolate waterfall)

As for Corpse Bride, I can't say I'm really insane about it.  I liked the art, and it was an alright film overall, but I guess I'm holding Burton and Elfman to higher standards.  As my cousin put it, it's a movie made to make money off of fans of Nightmare.

Corpse bride tried way to hard to be another "Nightmare Before Christmas," and everyone expected it to be just that...so obviously everyone was let down a bit.

He does have a talent though...especially with setting the mood of a story (as mentioned, with the dull-to-extremely bright contrasts).

I'm convinced Elfman is far more talented, though. I'm biased towards musical artists :) He's done a lot more than just movies...hell, everyone's heard something from him, even if they don't realize it.

Seriously, i LOVE the man's work, but the new Charlie and the Chocolate factory was TRASH. I honestly didnt like the way that it was set up in more modern times, and every time i saw the oompa loompas, i just wanted to walk out. Plus, Wonka looked like Michael Jackson. NEVER a good sign.

Honestly, it was just depressingly bad, especially for Burton. Not his lowest point, but still pretty bad. Good thing Corpse Bride made up for it by being awesome.

Tim Burton has got to be one of the most overrated directors out there. I hate him. He's made, like, 3 good movies.

Oh, and Corpse Bride sucked. The good version was released years ago. It was called "Nightmare Before Christmas". :P

I don't think he's one of the most overrated directors, he certainly has a unique style, but most of the people I've met who adore him are not actual movie buffs.

They like him because they think that they're liking something truly unique, and it makes them feel special... kind of like indie kids.

They don't realize that he's just about as commercial as any director can get.

Maybe that's harsh, but I've just never met a Tim Burton fan who's tastes in film I could take seriously.

And I've never met a Tim Burton fan who was - frankly - all that bright.

(having the OP misspell 'Genius' didn't help with that continued perspective of mine, by the way).

I quite like Tim Burton's style, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him a genius.

I enjoy his films as they are slightly quirky and the cinematrography and sets reflect that. Personally though I believe there are MUCH better directors out there, I prefer Neil Marshall, Robert Rodriguez and a wee bit of Dario Argento. But those reflect my own personal tastes in Film. :)

You. MORON. The only even vague similarity of the two was the style of the characters. Completely different storyline, as well as characters. Dont get me wrong, TNBC was the better movie, but Corpse Bride was most definitley unique and awesome.

And yes cacahuate, Jhonen is better.

Not a moron; just a person who understands the nature of Burton fans enough to piss them off just the right way.

Still, Corpse Bride was a pretty lame movie. There haven't been many times where I've walked out of a theater thinking "what was the point of that"?

Honestly, the plot had no real point. I had no emotional attachment to anyone in that movie, and everything was predictable. I wouldn't use predictable as a critique if Tim Burton and the movie weren't so praised for being so original and inventive. Sorry, but I was bored throughout the whole movie. Mabe people should watch some real brilliant and inventive movies like Memento. Damn that movie was awesome. <3

Slightly off topic, but seriously, guys, go get an Oingo Boing record (Elfman's band in the 80's, for you people who suck).

Either way, I'm pretty burned out with Burton. I fucking love Beetlejuice though. That movie wins. Corpse bride though? Just kinda meh. The ending bugged me ("Wait, she turned into butterflies? What is this scenester/emo bullshit?" was my first reaction).

Memento was super awesome.

and Jhonen Vasquez FTW. JTHM rocks out.

i love tim burton.  yeah sideways, you're right.  i'm no movie buff, thus i can't say whether he's a genius or a fuckwad.  but some of my favorite movies are burton/depp collaborations.  charlie and the chocolate factory and edward scissorhands?  marvellous!

and then of course i loved both nightmare before christmas and big fish.

if you want to say i have horrible taste in films, you're probably right.  i am a huge fab of napoleon dynamite, after all. ;)  but the one who sounds like an indie kid here is you.  you are being elitist about movies/directors the same way scenesters are about music/bands.

if me being a burton fan makes you think lesser of my intelligence, then so be it.  that's more your problem than mine.

I wasn't too impressed with Corpse Bride, but I didn't demand my money back from the box office. I think the worst part was the pretty catchy song that you couldn't understand a word of. I called the plot with little trouble, but it was still a nice movie to sit and watch for the sheer joy of watching shiny things move.

I'm waiting to see MirrorMask before I hand Tim Burton or Jhonen Vasquez the Master of Macabre title. I know Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's work, I'm just hoping the movie is as good as the preview looked. Little less than a month now until the DVD comes out.

I don't think Burton is overrated, I think he's good at what he does (usually). Willy Wonka was good, but I agree with http://wonkajackson.ytmnd.com/">neomang5.

And really, if you can find movie merchandise in Hot Topic, it's pretty obvious he's commercial. That doesn't necessarily make him a bad director.

The masters of Macabre are Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft.

Burton's pretty cool however. Getting erratic in his old age though. I love his early films and shorts (up to about the mid nineties), but his latest stuff has kinda fallen flat with me.

Tim Burton and Danny Elfman are the best combination for movies. That doesn't mean that either of them on their own are fantastic, but they complement each other's styles perfectly.

Calling people that like Burton's movies idiots or people who don't know films is a little O.T.T.

Fa shizzle.

Tim Burton makes movies with a distinct vitality.  However, you might want to get back to me in a few months or so since both Nightmare Before Christmas and Johnny Depp are lingering in my "Uncanny Valley of popularity" at present.  Apologies for being a total hipster snob.

If anyone who has been mentioned in this thread is overrated, its Edgar Allen Poe. At least as a poet. His short stories are wonderful, but his poems (yes, even the Raven) are pretty and pointless. He gets style points, but no substance points as far as the poems go.

Also, Big Fish is my favorite Burton movie. Such a wonderful break of tradition from him, but SUCH a Burton movie still. All the actors put in terrific performances, the pacing is wonderful, and it has my favorite scene of any movie I've ever seen in my life.

"When you see the love of your life, time stops."

Also.

How can someone say "good Burton movie" and not say "Batman." Seriously, if there is a Batman movie that MUST be seen, its the first one. Perfect style, perfect characters. Michael Keaton will always be Bruce/Batman in my eyes, and Jack Nicholson will always be Jack Napier/the Joker. Burton created the only true Gotham for me.

i'm not raving mad about Tim Burton, however i do like most of his films. my favorite is one of his first short films called "Vincent" which is a stop motion film and it is narrated by Vincent Price.(who i loved anyway). but I didn't really enjoy Corpse Bride. I thought it was visually beautiful and sweet but plot and story wise i really didn't enjoy it and i was kind of sad. I love Ed Wood and most of his others. I love his style.
If you get a chance read his childrens books. They are wonderfully dark.

Quote from: I Am Not Amused

Er, no.

EA Poe - Alone

"From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view."

You might not get it, but the unique truth Poe uncovers here, for me, makes this my favourite poem ever. Poe is in my only over-rated by people who, generally, aren't familiar with all his works, if you see what I mean.

Burton, however, has indeed done some stinkers. I still stand by saying the quality of his output is generally declining. His first short, Vincent, was pure brilliance. For those commenting on Burtons mastery of colour: well, he was originally an animator.

he's good, and has made some excellent movies (Big Fish, NBC, Mars Attacks!), but Planet of the Apes was horrible, and other than that he's made a handful of mediocre movies (Ed Wood excluded, as I haven't seen it), and a couple of average-at-best Batman movies (with one good performance between them)

I can see why he has the following he does, I just don't think he's as good as a lot of people say he is.

Tim Burton is overrated, in a way. He is extremely talented, there's no denying that, but I dunno. Nightmare Before Christmas IS one of the most overrated films out there, though. It is NOTHING compared to Corpse Bride. Corpse Bride is without doubt one of the most moving films I have ever seen. Then again, he has nothing to do with the fact that it's a moving tale though, does he? Meh, it's late.

Burton is hyped, but not without cause. His films are entertaining and funny, mostly original (especially compared to other main-stream directors). Although, he's getting less and less original. Corpse Bride and Nightmare are both good, but similar.
And Danny Elfman is a god too.
