Topic: So, I Picked Up The New Belle And Sebastian (Read 10043 times)

I like it, but it sounds SO different from their other stuff, its a bit of a shock at first.

But after I listend to it a couple times I like it better, Though "Blues are Still Blue" is kinda bad.

Any thoughts?

I like "Blues Are Still Blue," and it's not really that different. It's just more "Ceclia" than "Scarborough Fair" if you know what I mean.

Blues are Still Blue is amazing.

Best album since Sinister. I have no clue what you're talking about.

Songwriting's great, performance is great...awesome album.

it just seems a bit more electric and more stuff going on in the background than previous works.

There is nothing wrong with it, just unexpected when I put it in.

To Be Myself Completely, Sukie In The Graveyard and For The Price Of A Cup Of Tea are my favorites

We Are The Sleepyheads is very good too

AS For Blues - I want to like it, I really do, but I just don't very much - I really don't know why it just doesnt do it for me

I still haven't been able find a copy that isn't the $50 dvd special edition thing. Sure, I love Belle and Sebastian, but not quite $50 worth of love.

I'm liking it. I'm liking it a lot. Belle and Sebastian are sounding more and more like power pop these days (Shins, New Pornographers etc).

'White Collar Boy' and 'Song for Sunshine' are my faves.

The Cecilia/ Scarborough Faire analogy is really good.

But I'm not insane for saying that it is a pretty different sounding album right?

Having bought only Sinister before the new one, I have tos ay they both freaking rock, though they sound like copletely different bands.

I'll give my favoritism to Life Pursuit, though, as, while the great songs were greatgreat on sinister, they also had a couple really, really awful ones.

Life pursuit has great songs and mediocre onces, nothing that makes me want to skip.

Ouch. You won't want to hear, then, that it's the next single off the album.

In regards to The Life Pursuit, it really is a different kind of album for them. It's not so much of a jump from Dear Catastrophe Waitress, but it's still the most "rock" album they've put out. I enjoy a lot of the songs on there.

Also, when I saw them live last, they pulled a fast one on me. I haven't seen them live before, so I don't know if this is one of their usual songs to play live, but they pulled out "Electric Renaissance", an ugly, lo-fi electro number off Tigermilk, and they turned it into an awesome dance song. I was impressed.

I like the album! 'The blues are still blue' is a great pastiche I would say! At the moment all the songs soud similar and it maybe doesn't have as much exciting variety as DCW had. DCW was pure genius in my opinion!
'Funny little frog' definately stands out as the catchiest song. Not too keen on 'Mornington Crescent' though. Love the cover and book design!

I really feel like if I didn't have Belle and Sebastian there would be something missing in my life, they make me so happy!

I've never liked "The Boy Done Wrong Again", it just whines along for a while. However it may also have to do with the fact that it is followed by "Judy and the Dream of Horses" which may make it look worse.
For reference my favourite B&S record is the Jonathan David single.

Boy done wrong again, fox in the snow, and, actually, Like Dylan in the Movies. That song doesn't annoy me, but I just don't think it in any way stand up to the gauntlet of the first three songs.
And then the last two tracks don't stand up to the three before them.

So, three great, one meh, one blargh, three great, one blargh, one meh.

While, the life pursuit went good, great, great, good, good, great, okay, meh, great, good, meh, good, okay. So I can listen to the entire album without being letdown for long periods of time.

I loved feeling sinister, then I got the boy with the arab strap and was a little bit dissapointed, so I wasn't sure about getting the life persuit, but I love it, it was more rockin' then I expected from them, my favs are: song for sunshine, funny little frog, we are the sleepyheads, and the rest of the tracks are good too.

I got this album a few weeks ago. I'm really trying to like it, I am, but so far I've failed pretty miserably. Perhaps one of you can tell me what there is to like about it. Especially Gryff, since I'm pretty sure that "White Collar Boy" is the douchiest song I've ever heard (and I have listened to "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger).

Maybe it shows off their musicianship more than their older albums, but I don't think there's any beauty in it.

Maybe I'm just simple but "White Collar Boy" has both a catchy bass line and fun lyrics. That's all I need out of a good dance capable song. I'm not quite sure what the scientific quantifier for douchieness is, but I don't hear any of it on Life Pursuit. I think you may be thinking "My Humps."

That song, in a misguided attempt at introducing freshness, greatly increases your chances of an unpleasant infection.

I guess out of all of the records that have been released recently, it's still better than most, but they're capable of much better. If Steely Dan made it, I would be impressed.

I bought it as soon as I was able and find it absolutely delightful. "White Collar Boy" is a perfect piece of pop (alliteration, woo!). I also enjoy "For the Price of a Cup of Tea" a great deal. I suppose I'm biased, I've got a wild predilection for pop, and I own oodles of Belle & Sebastian recordings. I stand by it as a worthwhile purchase, definately a fun album.
