Ohhh an English degree.... aren't we snooty. Pretty much everyone has a degree of sorts now days. If it's a phd then respect but otherwise I'm just gonna go with "so what?".
So they write "epic pop songs"? Sounds twee and awful. Not my cup of tea at all. Carry on without me.
Rubby:
Well what I was trying to get across is that he uses big words, and properly too.
And no it's not twee, it's kinda bleak and droning, but in an almost upbeat catchy kinda way. Listen to "The Bad Arts" or anything off "Streehawk: A Seduction". Most folks say his voice is annoying, but hey, what can you do.
Houdinimachine:
I just got this album. I loved the hell out of it. I too was expecting something heavy. Then, I read the local underground record store's write up on it... which mentioned New Pornographers.
My thoughts: "Wha? New Pornographers aren't metal... unless they've changed recently. I should listen to this."
Later...
"Oh my god! This is good! Must buy..."
yipjumpmusic:
I saw destroyer open for the new pornographers and I love the music, but does no one have an issue with the way dan sings? I can get into all kinds of singing but this...I keep getting flashes of songs from the cartoon hobbit movie.

Honestly, I have never even considered Bejar's voice a problem. In fact, it's never even occured to me that others would find his voice grating. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.
Rubies is probably my favorite album of the year so far. I like it so much better than Your Blues, which was rendered unlistenable by all those ugly strings. I have nothing wrong with a little violin here or there, but for some reason, the fact that every song on Your Blues has a heavy layer of faux-strings on it doesn't work for me. They all just seem so pointless. They don't add anything to the songs, I find.
I suppose I should buy the Notorious Lightning EP when I find it since it's supposed to be rawer versions of the Your Blues songs. Would Destroyer fans say this is a good plan?
