Title: WCT -February 15-19, 2010
Post by: raoullefere on 14 Feb 2010, 22:13
Pure and clean as the driven snow
From Orange County
Here we go!

I know I misquoted this, but deciding from what I misquoted should give us something to do other than addressing even more inane subjects.

From Orange County? Why you... you Republican! Wait *checks user page* Oh, Mississippi. Then nevermind. Sorry. Carry on. Yay for Dragnet quotes, though!

Yay for double entendre conversations!

I chose Ballin the Jack because it doesn't have "the" first. I am annoyed to say that I only know of The Robot and The Twist, but then the last time I danced unguardedly was when I was 9 and attended a weeding. (misspelled, then left that way for fun)

Then we'd be wondering if Angus knew Klingon Opera.

I was wondering why Marten suddenly hated his library job, why Steve suddenly decided to return, and why Marten was oogling Faye when he was dating Dora. This whole time I'm having a strange feeling of Deja Vu going on in the back of my head.

Then I read the news post and all became clear.

So Jeph had a bad night, big deal. I'll give him a break, hell I'll give him a week's worth of breaks, QC has a rigorous update schedual that few comics meet or surpass, and Jeph delivers night after night after bloody night. Dude is like a machine.

Cheers to ya Jeph, hope you're feeling better tomorrow.

BOO on redraw! Although the deja vu was fun for a double take. I understand your mind must a self belittling mush, but that should have been a twiggy Faye! Now don't get me wrong I love me Faye's current  :-o bodacious booty and busty body. Its just after I figured out what was going on my mind got stuck. It can't grasp how you would draw young skinny Faye with your current drawing style  :? , but it begs to know. Call me selfish, but you do spoil us. Take all the time off you need. :-D

Omg YES! If I thought you were a robot I'd beg you to simultaneously start the whole comic over so we can see the beautiful transformation and also continue from here.

Will you do the poop one again, too? The one where Faye and Martin are having dinner together and she says "You know what I hate?" lololol.

In my half-awake state this morning I came to the conclusion that the fact I was reading what was clearly strip 3 but in a recent style was due to some caching error. Then I woke up properly and realised that that's not how computers work.

I am looking forward to the QC book much more now that we know the old strips will be redrawn. I know some people argue that we should keep the original style, but that's what the archives are for!

Jeph has said that only about 30 or so strips will be redrawn, where his originals are not high-enough resolution for printing.

I must have missed that somewhere. I always followed the mindset of her increasing weight being proportional to her comfort level. So does that mean Marten originally was supposed to like BIG Butts...and he could not lie? Dora is so wrong for him

Even if he is, I'm not too thrilled with the idea. Half the fun of reading long-running comics is seeing how the art and writing evolved over time. To a point, at least. Scott Ramsoomair did something similar with VG Cats, but it was a continuous process he started pretty early on, so they still have an obvious progression.

I must not have been paying attention, either; this is the first time I've heard he's going to redraw anything.

See, what Jeph should have done is George Lucas-ize the whole thing and have random alien creatures in the the background that weren't there the first time. QC: The Special Editions!

I said too many when I quoted Jeph as saying 30 strips to redraw.  Here is what he actually wrote in his LiveJournal:

Quote from: Jeph
As you may know, I'm currently working on putting the first QC book together. It will comprise the first 300 comics, in full color, and should be on sale in the first quarter of 2010 if everything goes according to plan. Part of the process of making the book is re-drawing old strips that I'm missing the original, high-resolution artwork for- probably 15 or 20 out of the first 300 comics. The plan is to have the re-drawn comics alongside the original, low-resolution versions, to provide a sort of comparison between what my art looked like then and what it looks like now.

The first five comics are among these, and this morning I finally went back and re-drew the very first Questionable Content comic I ever made. It was a surprisingly emotional experience- revisiting something I did six and a half years ago, reflecting on where I was then and where I am now, and this crazy goddamned career that began as nothing more than a means of blowing off creative steam after long days at MY job as an "office bitch."

I didn't like the #1 redraw so much, but I really like this one.  Especially the detail of Marten leaning back to catch a look at Faye.  Very nicely done!

Would've liked to have seen that studded belt and older hairstyle on Faye, though.  But yeah, alll the new detail's really nice!

I think it would be kind of jarring for readers of the book who haven't seen the web comic to see the art evolution of the first three hundred strips.

The early strips have a certain charm, but new readers would probably appreciate people with, oh say, necks, realistic fleshtones and irises that don't take up 50% of the eyeball.
Sacrilege, I'm sure.

I can't help but wonder how much of Tai's looking has been done in make-out sessions at the dorm and in bars.

Funny—I was just listening to Billy Idol's "Heroin" and then I read Jeph's comments. A coincidence? Of course. I've yet to prefect my ability to control Jeph's mind via my I-Tunes playlists.

Yesterday's poll results:

The Bird     - 4 (12.5%)
The Jughead    - 3 (9.4%)
The Watusi    - 3 (9.4%)
The Robot    - 4 (12.5%)
The Twist    - 2 (6.3%)
The Hustle    - 1 (3.1%)
Ballin' the Jack    - 12 (37.5%)
The Madison    - 3 (9.4%)

Apparently, most of you feel the Hustle is extremely well known—or maybe, like me, you find some of Angus's poses remind you of Saturday Night Fever. Ballin' the Jack wins—even though I tell ya, everyone who was anyone was dancing that in 1942. Or so I'm told.

Well, it's not like anyone reads Chester. I mean... well, take a look for yourselves if you're unfamiliar. http://jessfink.com/Chester5000XYV/

For a moment, I was thinking that Pintsize's resiliency must be from the fact that he has that illicit military grade chassis, but then I remember that A) that's been repoed by Uncle Sam, and B) Faye tore him apart once. So, what does account for his inhuman (okay, inPC) resiliency to damage? I know you drop kick one of my old PCs and good luck getting it to reboot again, let alone talk to you.

Only the laser was taken back (Agent Turing got confused after being attacked by a giant space owl) and Pintsize's original chassis is still in Marten's closet.
Pintsize (and apparently most/all AnthroPCs) is designed with magnetic joints that can be pulled apart relatively easily.

So he probably could survive a few bank-shots off the wall.

Right. Given that they're designed to walk around, hop on and off furniture, etc., they presumably have far sturdier shock protection than your typical desktop PC. They may get by by having a lot more RAM than a non-sentient computer, so when the shock-detector kicks in they don't have to wait for semi-vital processes to come out of swap.

Of course, given that Pintsize has said he needs to breathe to keep his CPU(s?) cool, that would mean that whenever he hits Youtube he starts panting. I should probably stop this line of thought now.

Again I am impressed by the "new" Faye's self control. The old Faye would've launched Tai across the room. With predjudice.

In that case she'd head butt her in the junk and puke all over her.

I only just noticed the radical perspective change in panel two. Look, it's the couch from Dora's apartment! I always thought there was more apartment in that direction, but apparently it's just a wall.

What does Marten's apartment look like, anyway? We only ever see one or two parts of it. I wouldn't be able to tell where the bathroom, Faye's bedroom or that window where Steve proposed hot gay sex is.

I don't know why, but this made me think of the "Isn't it nuts?" scenes in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, although Pintsize isn't big enough to impersonate even Tai. If only he could get his USB cable into the Boyfriendbot.

To be fair to Tai (can't believe I'm doing that), Faye brought up making out, which is kind of asking for the poke she got. Well, not literally, but you know what I mean.

I accept that in a third universe a person who is definitely not me sailed in with few Death Stars and a Sun Crusher and blasted Nero's whiny ass before Vulcan died.

Too bad about those Klingon ships, though.

I can't figure out how to make a poll out of this, but I liked it too much not to make you guys read it (plus it's on topic). So:

“What could possibly go wrong?” was most likely said:

  • While finalizing plans to fill the Hindenburg with hydrogen and paint it with thermite.
  • Just before trying to restock Titanic’s ice supply mid-cruise for the weenies who wanted their scotch on the rocks.
  • Upon realizing after casting Kevin Coster* as the title character of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves that no one had asked him to demonstrate his English accent.
  • Right after shelling out $100 million to Coster and the director of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves to make Waterworld
  • Seconds before the Super Bowl XXXVIII half-time show upon realizing it hadn’t been explained to Justin Timberlake that “I’m gonna get you naked” was supposed to be a joke.

*Yes, I do know there's an 'N' in 'Costner.' I also know he and whosname spent 175 mill, but that was their original budget.

Gonna go with the Hindenburg, because that actually happened and there were people involved that actually realized it was a Bad Idea.

Tonight's poll has the advantage of offering choices rather than commentary.
 Yesterday's poll results:
Biggest problem for humans involved in robosexual relationships:
1. You are almost certain your partner’s faking it most of the time.    - 4 (8.2%)
2. Unlike the Lovedoll people, you have to put up with annoying back-talk.    - 9 (18.4%)
3. Discovering existence of online video of you your partner uploaded after it’s been removed, but not before it’s been downloaded millions of times.    - 4 (8.2%)
4. When your partner uses the ‘not tonight, I have a headache’ excuse, it’s either a lie or an expensive repair job.    - 11 (22.4%)
5. There’s always the risk your partner is blogging your efforts as you make them.    - 8 (16.3%)
6. Discovering the online video of you your partner uploaded is considered so tame YouTube didn’t bother removing it.    - 13 (26.5%)

I would never have guessed #6 would win.

Statistics, published uninterrupted even by war, since 1864 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisden_Cricketers%27_Almanack), would make cricket the perfect game for Hanners. But who says the bat belongs to her anyway? She's in Faye/Marten/Dora's flat, not her own, and I doubt she carries it around tucked in her trackies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket_bat).

Maybe you can put in a good word for me?  (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=nfphali6okegpeyyurxw6bfl&page=1#5)

Here's the main gist of it:
Quote
"You show me a happy homosexual and I'll show you a gay corpse."
—Michael, The Boys In The Band

"I'm a Jew, I'm small, I'm homosexual, and I live in Sheffield. I'm fucked."
—Posner, The History Boys

Despite the traditional meaning of the word "gay", homosexual characters tend to be a miserable lot, and not by simple coincidence - their misery can be attributed largely to their sexuality or, more accurately, other people's attitudes towards it. In short, they don't just have angst, they have gayngst.

Characters suffering from Gayngst are prone to alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse, self-loathing, rampant homophobia towards themselves and others, falling in tragic unrequited love with heterosexuals, contemplating (and often committing) suicide, and wishing that they were straight.

Gayngst is a Pet Peeve Trope of many due to the fact that while it usually portrays gay people sympathetically, it can be interpreted as saying that it's impossible to be gay without being miserable, or that gay people don't deserve Happy Endings. However, portraying something in fiction isn't the same as promoting it (indeed, it can be an excellent way of condemning it), and Gayngst is still unfortunately common in real life, so it's hardly an irrelevant topic for fiction. After all, True Art Is Angsty transcends sexual orientation.

Gayngst is often found in Boys Love and Girls Love works for obvious reasons.

Not to be confused with the Gayngster, although some Gayngsters probably have their share of Gayngst. Clumsy examples of Gayngst often dive headfirst into Wangst territory. Sister Trope of Bury Your Gays, which it frequently overlaps with. Super Trope of Incompatible Orientation. Note that this doesn't come up quite as often in works with a Cast Full Of Gay.

I'm not listing all the examples though. :p

Lighter weight and easier to swing edge-on than a baseball bat, and it has an edge.

So does a katana, but you won't cut yourself on a cricket bat.

A waste is a terrible thing to mind.

Hurrah for Faye fending off Tai. I do wonder if 'lil miss handy knows how dangerously she's living.

Hanners showing up with a cricket bat makes more sense than her showing up with a shinai. Well, to me, anyway.

Probably not, but she's drunk.

Which brings to mind those comments Faye and Penelope made back in 1037... maybe Tai's confusing bisexuality for substance abuse?

I'd like to know why Hanners has a cricket bat for such occasions and not the more traditional All AMERICAN baseball bat.

Because this is Western Mass. and they hate America (especially the part east of Palmer).  Everything's got to be either local or foreign, nothing in-between.

Anything you need to swing around is basically useless in self defence in-doors. So, shinai, katana, boken, jo, baseball bat, cricket bat ... all useless.

Lighter weight and easier to swing edge-on than a baseball bat, and it has an edge.

According to Wiki, baseball bats weigh "no more than" 33oz (though Wiki gets the metric conversion wrong, 33oz is only 935g). Cricket bats, by contrast, have no regulation maximum weight and Kookaburra (an Australian manufacturer) offers bats of up to 3lb 4oz (1.47kg) as standard. So, if you really want to crush a skull, a cricket bat is actually heavier. The slower swing is little disadvantage when handling slow-moving zombies.

The legal maximum length of a cricket bat is 38" (0.965m). Baseball bats are apparently allowed to be up to 42". So the reach advantage goes to the Louisville Slugger. And baseball bats are allowed to be made of metal, so zombie teeth are less likely to be able to get a grip, and brains are easier to wipe off. On the other hand, the cricket bat's 4.25" wide blade makes it easier to block thrown knives, shuriken etc.

Anything you need to swing around is basically useless in self defence in-doors. So, shinai, katana, boken, jo, baseball bat, cricket bat ... all useless.

Depends on the length. I'd favour a pair of Butterfly Swords...

Too bad Hanners didn't just buy a paddle at the local shop (there has to be one to supply those crazy college kids with their S&M initiation gear), as it would be about the size of that bat, and we wouldn't have to wonder why she's into any sport whatsoever.

For the record, I do not own a gun, but when the Zombie apocalypse comes, my first stop will be the Sporting Goods Department of my local discount store.

I will not stop at the check out counter either.

The question is: Which is the best type of shotgun ammo for zombies? Buckshot or Deer Slug?

You need something with not just stopping power, but the ability to actually destroy limbs.

Answers to yesterday's poll:
The one thing you’d have happen in an Alternate Universe QC is:
1. Marten and Faye would actually be brother and sister, separated at birth, with Marten given to a wandering dominatrix to raise. (It would explain a ton of stuff, trust me— George Lucus.)    - 13 (36.1%)
2. Marigold would have a compulsion to issue bio sheets to everyone she meets.    - 1 (2.8%)
3. Hannelore’s dad wouldn’t have destroyed Vulcan.    - 5 (13.9%)
4. Angus would for no clear reason occasionally dress in shorts, school jacket, and school cap.    - 6 (16.7%)
5. Hanners’ mother would have never forged the One Ring.    - 10 (27.8%)
6. Khalen and Richard would finally be able to—wait, wrong continuity.    - 1 (2.8%)

Obviously, many of you still have a touching faith in Lucus’ plotting abilities.

I believe this last poll to be especially pointless. Enjoy.

The goal is to pierce th thumbnail in order to drain the blood that is collecting behind it and relieve the pressure, but not pierce the thumb itself.

On the subject of Zombies and Shotguns, it really, really depends on whether you're talking your classic Night of the Living Dead, slow-moving zombie; or the Rage-virus ridden, ultrafast ones.   Although on the later, I prefer having a good amount of C4 on hand, you know, just in case.

It probably works 'fairly well'.

I've used a couple different semi-auto shotguns, and they offer a lot of benefits over a single-shot or pump action. The main one being that the lion's share of the recoil is burned by the action to cycle in the next round.

The drawback, however, is that any sort of autoloader requires premium ammo. I can feed any old bargain brand through my pump all day long, but I've got to have the good stuff, at 2x-3x cost, if I'm using an auto.

As for the strip, god bless Hanners. I hope she doesn't develop too much rage at having to put up with drunks, that always drives me batty.

Coming from an experienced left 4 dead 2 player : The best weapon I've found in a zombie apocalypse would be the laser sighted AK-47 with extended 40 rounds magazine backed up with a Desert Eagle. Deploy 4 men with such equipment in a diamond formation and proceed to rape anything standing in your way. Including witches and tanks. We managed to down one tank in less than 5 secs. It was beautiful. Shotguns suffer from range, rate of fire, ammo capacity and reload time But that may or may not be the case of the awesome looking shotgun posted by one gentlemen above. Also, real life AK-47s have a reputation of being reliable, ammo is cheap and easy to find. Maintenance is easy and don't require rare spare parts.

In a less video gamish setting I would suggest a good rooftop, rifles of any kind, and a shitload of ammo, dry food, and meds. A couple of flare guns wouldn't hurt either in case somebody out there would be looking for survivors in a chopper. Rifles have the advantage of being extremely accurate even at long range, one bullet to the head is enough so ammo is spared.

Lastly, one of the best ways to handle a zombie apocalypse is to turn the damn virus to your advantage. It's a well known hollywoodian fact that people injected with a crafted breed of any zombie virus using "obscure biological genius worthy mojo" turns you into a AWESOME UNSTOPPABLE KILLING MACHINE OF DOOM. Basically you become immune to the normal devastating effects of the virus, get a bunch of random superpowers often including super strength and regenerative abilities, even one or two "Hideous final transformations" that you may activate at will, or more likely at the climax of the movie when those annoying pretentious "heroes" show up, call you an unnatural evil abomination and proceed to blow you face off or whatever it takes to finish you off. Damn heroes. All we ever really wanted was to be badass and take over a few continents to relive the boredom of being alone in a zombie infested ghost town.

Warning :Left 4 dead 2 related rant ahead. If you recognized yourself as the target of this rant, please learn or never play the game again.

When witches are close TURN YOUR DAMN LIGHTS OFF AND LEAVE HER ALONE!!! You're just going to suck up a med pack, or die if you ever managed to get far enough in an expert game to meet your first witch. Or maybe you just logged into the game and started acting like a jackass... shooting your friends, rushing in melee like the fool you are and wandering off in the wrong direction, begging for a smoker to finish you off and relieve us of a death weight. And then you have the balls to call us noobs and leave the game. Do you know how many times I've backtracked 3-4 rooms to save your useless ass because you couldn't keep up with the rest of the group and get your headset on so we could coordinate properly? Do you know that every single of those times my other teammates told me I should have left you to rot? Well they are completely right.

also, Liwen, know that L4D is a griefer's paradise. It's best played with people you know and trust. like a real zombie apocalypse.

Personally, I think Hannelore calculated the one-time experience of the thumb-nail poke versus however many weeks of being around Marten without that thumb nail, and chose the less gross of two evils.

I can go with that. Had a friend whose sister had her thumbnail come off for that reason. She made the rounds showing everyone that all that was there now was, and I quote, "the meat." Ruined quite a few people's food.

Actually, though, it's not really surprising Hanners should be the person who 'does what has to be done.' She is the spawn of the forger of the One Ring, after all, or so several of you believe.

Aw, I can't leave it like that. Hannelore has been meeting challenges head-on for some time with more than a little courage. This is simply the latest one.

Couldn't resist adding. You know what the best way to handle the witch is in l4d2? Chainsaw to the back. Gets her every time.

I propose that we call it the HanMat suit.
The Hannelore Materials suit sounds almost as creepy as a box my SO once kept lotions and whatnot in, which she thoughtfully labeled "Body Products."

Mmm...body products.

not to start a Thing, but Jeph, if you read this, might I suggest trying to find a Newfie (or whatever kind of dog you decide on) at a shelter? Shelter dogs are good too.

We will be looking at shelters once we decide on the breed we would like to own. We do have to get a puppy in order for it to be raised around our pet rabbits. I wouldn't want to get a mature dog and just pray that it didn't eat our other pets.

Even without OCD, I can't leave a pimple or blood blister on myself alone - I'm compelled to poke it.

It makes perfect sense to me that Hannelore would extend this to other people - and to driving holes through fingernails.

Cool. I figured that would be part of the plan already, but just thought I'd mention it. Good luck in finding the newest member of your family!

Kind of sad:  jephco.com (http://web.archive.org/web/20040318095547/http://www.jephco.com/) has been squatted.

Naturally.

Kugai, you don't have any large, red buttons labeled "Do Not Press" anywhere near you, do you?

"Ensign Checkov, prepare photon torpedos for launch"

"Reddy for lunch, Kaptin"

"No, thanks.  Not hungry right now"

I just get the idea that, sooner or later, you'll have to press it. Just to see.

For that matter:
Kirk: Scotty! Emergency beam-up…for four!"

Scott: Nay, I cannae do it, Captain! I'm eatin' me lunch.
