I finally saw Scarface today. It wasn't what I expected. I laughed at inappropriate times and didn't give a shit about Tony Montana. He was just some idiot coke dealer and when he died I was happy that the movie was over. I love the soundtrack though. I am a sucker for Elizabeth Daily.
Hugo felt very heavily auto-scripted to be honest. The whole story arc is so easy the movie practically writes itself. It fun to watch though! But not worth the 3D ticket. 2D is just as good. By having scorcese as director it does have a very high feel of it being made for older people... there is a sense of speed but that's in actions and plot structure, not in characters and their behaviour, kind of what is missing in a childrens filmI watched Hugo as well, was pretty entertaining. I don't know what you mean by auto-scripting, but a lot of the scenes were rather predictable. Others, however, did succeed in surprising me. I totally agree with you about the 3D, it rather looked like a cardboard cutout. Not to mention the spectacular anachronism that is showing pre-WWI movies in 3D.
The Woman In Black, very good horror movie, by Hammer films!
Stand By Me in delicious Blu Ray. Although the quality wasn't brilliant, it is an amazing film. It is very odd how Stephen King is one of few authors whose books are also pretty incredible films (albeit very different).
I watched Attack the Block again to see if there was something I missed the first time.
Nope, still one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Don't you dare say bad things about The Room!
Wiseau is the world's greatest troll.
Yep. And it regularly sells out showings all over the world - its kind of the point. Its now another cult film, and I can see why.
I finally watched the Stanley Kubrick version of The Shining, and I thought it was really good. I loved the music and how it sort of makes you think something could happen at any time. Also, Jack Nicholson is really fucking scary pretty much all the time. I think it's the eyebrows
Has anybody seen the new Three Stooges movie? Was it ok?
That's nice. I was going to see that The Raven movie, but I don't want to have to inform the people in the theater how they got Poe's shit all wrong. Three Stooges it is!
Are there space boobs in it?
21 Jump Street is the fucking worst movie.
I watched Attack the Block again to see if there was something I missed the first time.Aw, I liked it. You should probably not watch Attack the Gas Station. It isn't related except for similarities of the titles.
Nope, still one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
Prometheus was....ok? I mean, there were little parts I enjoyed and it was pretty, but the storyline was meh. It moved too slow and not a lot happened, I guess. I don't know. But Michael Fassbender as David was pretty much my favorite part of the movie. He did a great job with his character.
Christ Welu, you only saw Spiderman 3? I kind of feel sorry for you. The first two were actually okay, and didn't involve a student having an emo-mid-life-crisis mid-film.
From what I know the reboot only exists so Warner Bros could hold on to their license.
Maybe...(click to show/hide)
Also I saw a preview for Man of Steel and it looks really interesting. The cast list (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770828/) also looks pretty good, especially for some of the side characters.
As for Zsasz - wasn't he in Dark Knight Rises? I'm sure I heard his name.
Our daughter met the guy she was to marry, and backed out.
I remember thinking it was such an awesome movie when I was a kid
I just re-watched The Phantom (Billy Zane style).
I remember thinking it was such an awesome movie when I was a kid, now it's like some cheezed-up Indiana Jones rip-off with a guy in purple spandex instead of a leather jacket. Still a fun watch, though!
I remember thinking it was such an awesome movie when I was a kid
Wait - didn't it just come out a couple of years ago?
[checks date - 1996!?!??!]
Damn, I'm getting old - my sense of time's slipping.
The Phantom movie makes me think of that Shadow movie they made around the same time. Also, I totally had one of those promo skull rings and I wore it all the time.
Prometheus.
I don't see what people disliked about it. Solid flick.
I read that as the trailers were too loud, but boyfriend didn't think the film was. For my part, I take cheap musician earplugs (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ACS-ER20-Musicians-Earplugs/dp/B000UJ8RHE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1349447545&sr=8-3) when going to the cinema.
Go see Looper. Seriously. Brilliant, clever, makes you think why time travel movies had to have so many 'rules' before this one. Won't say too much more though.
The Untouchables (2011)
Really recommended. Great story, great acting. Funny and just enough drama. Also it's French, which was kind of refreshing..
Living under rocks? It's not out in the US for another three days!
It's a Wonderful Life, holiday favourite
I also went to the local premiere of the Warren Miller movie, Flow State.
Not my favourite but it was pretty cool.
There are worse sequels. In fact, there are worse Nightmare sequels.
There are worse sequels. In fact, there are worse Nightmare sequels.
Oh god don't say that. I bought the box set because it was REALLY cheap and I've only seen 2 or 3 of them.
A shorter lived genre in the latter half of the 70s was the animal horror films, most famously, Jaws. Cheap to make, but also way too easy in making them cheesy.
Its quite funny to look back on earlier releases (late 90s/00s) that don't quite follow the formula (and don't have half the budgets) of today's super-hero films. Part of me thinks Wolverine/First Class was all to try and make X-Men seem less corny than the 2000 picture (although on a second viewing, all of those films were below what I remember them being).
I think it would be fairly easy to argue that Nightmare 1 and New Nightmare are the only good films in the franchise. But oh man those 2 films are fucking amazing. The rest of them aren't even schlocky fun.

I still think the 3rd one is pretty decent.
I also just realised how many sequels there are out there that take a serious character and turn them into a joke. Freddy is one example but there's also Rambo, seriously watch the first films ending and see how messed up he is in the head, then watch the sequels where he's pretty much a killing machine. Lethal Weapon 1 has Mel Gibsons character trying to kill himself, then there's little or no mention of this in the sequels as they become more buddy cop films.need I mention the second conan movie? I just watched the new Hobbit movie and I really liked it.
The more recent Tarantin0s?
Though Deathproof nearly bored me to tears.
The more recent Tarantin0s?
Though Deathproof nearly bored me to tears.
Deathproof was so bad compared to Planet Terror, I was happy when they decided to split them up for DVD release.
Are you guys kidding? Planet Terror was a piece of shit, it tried so hard to emulate old horror movies and got pretty much everything wrong. Death Proof on the other hand has the most entertaining car chases I've ever seen, and they take up a good third of the movie.
Life of Pi. Well worth seeing, though I have to say I didn't get the ending at all.

Saw the Hobbit last night, and quite frankly, it's a piece of crap. Peter Jackson has really gone over the deep end with this one. It's far too long and stuffs in far too much crap that doesn't serve the story, just so Jackson can link it to the LOTR trilogy, instead of letting it stand on its own. This always should've been one family friendly movie and not so closely linked to the trilogy. Bilbo gets very little in the way of character development until his forced actions during the climax. The worst offenders are the cartoonish goblins and orcs that are renders in horrible CG instead of makeup, the goblin king comes off as horribly unbeleivable, while most of the action set pieces are set against fake backdrops. Hell, even the fire in the fireplace in Bilbos house was CG, it's just a horrid misuse of the technology that takes away from the grounded realism that the LOTR trilogy had with it's miniatures and make-up. Overall, it's a mess of a movie that doesn't have me excited at all for the next two films.
Why should the goblin king come off as a high society twit with a cruel streak?
Why should the goblin king come off as a high society twit with a cruel streak?
Because he's the Goblin King, not the Goblin Earl of Sandwich.
I dunno, I haven't even seen it yet. :psyduck:
What kind of project is it?
I need a French film to watch (in french) for a project. Any ideas?
a mish mash of Fahrenheit 451, 1984 and a Martial Arts film
Equilibrium is riddled with pot holes
Vanellope: "Please! I just wanna race like you guys!"
Taffyta: "You will never be a racer, because you're a glitch - and that's all you'll ever be!" *Pushes*
Ralph: "Look, kid.. I tried to warn ya. I can't make things, I just break--"
Vanellope: "I love it.."
Ralph: "..You do?"
Vanellope: "I love it.. I love it! I love it! I love it! Look, it's got a real engine! And look at these wheels! *Mwah* I love it! I finally have a real kart!"
Ralph: "So let me get this straight. You don't know how to drive."
Vanellope: "Well, no, not technically. But, I just though that--"
Ralph: "What did ya think? 'Oh, I'll just- I'll just magically win the race, just cuz I really want to!'?"
Vanellope: "Look, wise guy, I know I'm a racer. I can feel it in my code."
Vanellope: "I found that secret opening, and now I live here. See? Look, look, look. Welcome to my home! I sleep in these candy wrappers. I bundle myself up like a little homeless lady."Not to mention:
Ralph: "By yourself? With all this garbage around you..?"
Vanellope: "Well, yeah.. I mean, everyone here says I'm just a mistake and that I wasn't even supposed to exist. What do you expect?"
Ralph: "Listen, kid.. I know it's none of my business, but why do you even stick around this game?"
Vanellope: "You really don't know anything, do you? Glitches can't leave their games.. It's one of the joys of being me.."
To change the genre (I am afraid of watching horror movies):One of my all time favourite movies! I love almost everything ever writen by Charlie Kauffman, and Gondry is a great director as well. And yes, Jim Carrey is awesome in it. Kate too, as usual <3
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Cried manly tears (I'm not afraid to cry). Also, best acting by Jim Carrey I've ever seen him do.
Daughter made me watch Wreck-It-Ralph, it was fucking AMAZING.FIXED
I just watched Rise of the Guardians, and it was pretty good. I decided to give it a shot mostly because of the tumblr fandomIs that the one with Jack Frost and Soviet Santa? I liked it.
Saw Feardotcom. Or as it should be called based on the movie itself, Feardotcom.com.
Lynnie, please tell me you caught how incredibly gay Fight Club is.
Also the film kicks the shit out of the book.

@Gareth: Have you seen Snatch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snatch_%28film%29)? I really like it. One of those I can pop on most of the time. :-)excellent movie all round!
"Best of Both Worlds" from TNG, remastered and released in theaters. Better than I feared. Held up fairly well, and Patrick Stewart's performance most of all.wait, what? they did that?

I just rewatched Saving Private Ryan, that movie guts me right in the feels with a bayonet every single time. Then it shoves a morphine syringe in my chest and tells me to go kill Nazis, then it gets me in the feels right at the end.O$ne of my most watched movies, love it, specially near the end. If you like that watch Band of Brothers (and also The Pacific, less epic but still good)
Iron Man Three. Enjoyed it.
and the worst that happened is some singed hair.
"..extremely difficult... One would need to know which frog genes are homologous with which dinosaur genes, which would likely require a huge amount of dinosaur DNA fragments and sequencing data."
"In the book, they actually used a mix of DNA sources - only a handful of the species had the frog DNA specifically (including the compys and velociraptors)..."
I'm not gonna argue about the scientific inaccuracies of a science fiction movie :psyduck: .
If you were gonna do it you would use bird (probably ostrich or raptor(bird)) or reptile (probably crocodile or iguana) genes. Using an amphibian is just silly. The one caveat I would maintain about Jurassic Park is that it was made 20 years ago; much of what was thought at the time has been proven incorrect since; theories and thoughts have been reviewed, revised and rewritten. Even more so in the novel, which was published in late 1990. Its different to the old "Lost World" type of films where the films makers used gila monsters and iguanas with cardboard fins as dinosaurs, the production team and their experts took what they knew, among them Bob Bakker and Jack Horner. Even they have admitted that some of their theories were incorrect since their work on the film.
wasnt that his april fools day episode?
Karl Urban as Bones
Saw Hangover 3. It's a lot bigger than the other ones, not nearly as much low-brow joke-fest.
trying to convince a friend to watch "event horizon" as they liked dead space. they are leery about watching it because it was made in '97. Has anyone seen it recently to say whether it has stood the test of time?(16 years).
There are a lot of genre films that would like to have a word with you. Especially ridiculous action films.
Horror films are really the only genre films that hold up. That said, I hate horror films..
HADDIGEHBURD
Naww, but seriously, I didn't mind Dark of the Moon as much as TF2, but can't for the life of me remember what happens. It's worth a watch, once, but you won't need to ever revisit the series afterwards. Perhaps the first one if you're feeling nostalgic.
DotM is too much chaotic New York.
DotM is too much chaotic New York.
Wasn't DotM in Chicago?
What is more important is, they have computers. I am not even sure you can invent any kind of logic system without a concept of lies. You can. A false statement is not the same as a lie, and logic is based on false and true statements, not Truths and Lies.

I think I must be the only person in the world who liked RotF more than DotM.. See, when you watch a transformers movie, you've got to take certain precaution; ignore the film every time anyone speaks; ignore the films every time any human character is the focus of the screen; ignore the film every time Bay wanks of to military stuff; ignore the film every time it tries to progress it's plot outside of fighting scenes.
Now that you're good to go, enjoy that awesome forest battle. DotM is too much chaotic New York.
Watched Treasure Planet last night.
I loved this movie as a kid.
It was really hard to watch.
Man of Steel.
Was alright.
This Is The End. If you like Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill, that whole crew then yeah, it's good. A lot of improvisation, it seems, and the cameos are nuts. They take a lot of jabs at themselves and each other.
I'm really happy they had the balls to stick with Anderson as a psionic. When they first announced her I was afraid they were going to leave that out since it's one of the more silly aspects of the setting. It was such a damn good Dredd movie.
Now we just need a movie of the Dark Judges story arch.
Following a public search for the original film materials relating to Robin Hardy’s horror classic The Wicker Man, Studiocanal UK and director Robin Hardy have made an announcement about what has been found via the hunt’s Facebook page. The announcement includes news that an original print of the film has been found.
“Over the years, the fate of The Wicker Man has been the subject of much discussion amongst the fans,” says Studiocanal’s General Manager UK Home Entertainment John Rodden, “We set up the Facebook page not only to act as a hub for information in the search, but also in order to give fans the chance to discuss their love for The Wicker man, and to expound on some of the wilder myths and legends surrounding the film. The response has been amazing, and we’re so grateful to all the people who have taken the time to join the conversation. We hope they will be pleased with what we’ve found.”
2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the The Wicker Man’s original release. In celebration of this and as part of their continuing project to both preserve and showcase classic British cinema, Studiocanal intends to restore and release the most complete version of the film possible.
The new version of the film will be released in selected cinemas on 27 September, and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on 14 October.
Below you can see Robin Hardy talking about the search for the original materials.
Just watched the Evil Dead remake. I have some conflicted feels about this movie, but I think it was quite good for the most part.
First, I wasn't upset by the idea of them remaking this, but it was going to be tough considering the modern horror landscape. A big part of the love for the Evil Dead movies was the subversion of horror tropes and the quality of mockery that was applied while not actually sacrificing the level of horror. They instead went for a more straight faced style of horror which was well done, and i suspect a wise idea considering what ruins most remakes is that they seem pointless. There's usually little to nothing changed and its just a clearer picture with worse actors. In this case, it at least set itself apart a bit by taking it's own interpretation and running with it, not even bothering to compete with the same kind of quality of the original. I also greatly appreciated that 99% of the special fx were practical fx.
However, it still has a lot of the problems that bother me about the horror genre, my absolute favorite genre I might add, namely issues with how it portrays women and what happens to them. While the character of Eric was practically a running gag with how often he got stabbed with various objects, there is still that uncomfortable difference in how the violence is applied and presented to the characters dependent on their gender. The most obvious case being the return of the rape tree.
I still can't quite believe they brought back the rape tree.
Well, I can believe it, and the fact that it was applauded by the incredibly creepy fan base, but there's no fucking excuse for it. Sam Raimi took it out of Evil Dead 2 because he grew the fuck up, it should have stayed out. It was a detail that honestly made me enjoy the movie less than I could have.
Overall though, it is a good horror film, but it's flawed in ways that mostly don't have anything to do with the level of talent. It's almost entirely due to the fact that some of these tropes involving women still exist in 2013.
Saw the new Evil Dead. Someone on Twitter, can't remember who, summed it up pretty well: "Well, that sure was Evil Dead."
Was entertaining. Go as far as to say a remake/reboot done right.
Saw Kick-Ass 2 tonight. in many ways I think I enjoyed it more than I did the first movie, in spite of the violence fetish. I suspect I'd enjoy the comics far less :o
Saw Elysium and enjoyed it thoroughly, plotholes and accents and all. Saw Now You See Me and, while i thought it was fun, I couldn't help but think that the script didn't do the actors justice. The main "twist" wasn't entirely satisfying. It was a little fun seeing Pont Neuf just hours after we'd hung out there though :o
This is either going to be incredible or painful to watch.
GO GET THE BOOK!! It's so much better than the movie.
starring Brian Cox

This is a lie - I have confused myself by thinking "oh hey, that actor's name sounds like Brian Cox" and now I can't remember the actual name.
But he's so dreamy. And smart and soft spoken with great hair, it's all I ever wanted in science.

I think this is like saying maths has sold out because Rachel Riley does the numbers round on Countdown. If they were just pretty faces who had no idea what they were talking about, maybe I'd agree but I don't think it's unreasonable to try and make topics that a lot of people find dull and complicated more palatable by having someone likable talk about them. Full disclosure: I've only seen Brian Cox on Qi, don't watch his shows.
~ ~
I watched Insidious. Like most horror films I liked it up until the last twenty minutes, but even then I still quite liked it. I can relate to fear of things going bump and things moving in the corner of my eyes. I'm not scared of demons, so putting one right in front of me, no matter how spooky and aggressive it's acting, is just lost on me, fear-wise. I just wonder how long that actor spent in make-up.
barmyI'd forgotten this was an actual word and not just May's nickname.
I forgot where I read/saw it but the guy saw it(click to show/hide)
Didn't know that 3.33 was available to be watched. About to watch it now. :-)
Even the dub has been screened recently; DVD release of that has not been announced yet, but Wal-Mart have it on pre-order for 18 Feb.
"Word of god" refers to what the creator says.I'm aware of this, and I stand by my earlier statement. And interesting, I'll probably watch all three just to watch them even if I don't need to.
Def. didn't expect to enjoy Thor 2 almost as much as Avengers but whaddaya know :o best line of the movie: "Tadaaahh!"yay! I am so glad to be hearing this!

To guage your opinion against mine... did you like the first Thor?
That's what I was thinking too. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I did with Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead
Despite the horrible predecessor, I had some mild hopes for the film, considering the ok reviews.
FUCK YOU, SCIENCE! (4)
FUCK YOU, SCIENCE! (4)
I might see it at some point, but I'm still annoyed that they turned World War Z into a generic zombie movie. WWZ would work much better as a TV show, or even a web series, with one interview per episode.
Saw Sucker Punch. I think it's underrated.
I can see the sexism perspective, although I think it's no worse than many films with better reputations - but the film is incredibly stylised and I think that style is amazing.
Rob Schneider's character is annoying as fuck though.Always true without any context needed.
Just saw Anchorman 2. A little long, but themore than made up for it.(click to show/hide)
Do tell.
I saw Her. I liked it quite a bit. Samantha (the OS/female lead) reminded me quite a bit of Jane from Speaker for the Dead.
Do tell.
Watched The Dark Knight again last night. Still brilliant but it does have some issues I noticed this time.

I don't see why they can't just frame the Joker for Harvey Dent's crimes. If he denies it, who would believe him?
He says, "Yippee Ki Yay Mother," and then lets the guy shoot him in the shoulder covering up the last part
Yeah, but PG-13s can have one fuck. I'd be shocked if they didn't use it on that. (I've seen the fourth one but don't remember much)

So, over the past few days we watched the three Godfather films. Hadn't seen them before and I'm glad I have now. They're long and slow but so tense and very well acted and impressive in scope. They are simply wonderful.
I actually haven't seen Part III, and I've never seen Sofia Coppola act, but she's a damn good director.
Why did the make an R-rated series PG-13 anyway?
Has anyone seen "Saving Mr. Banks" yet?
I'm taking the wife to see it Monday afternoon.... is it worth the $12 each??

My personal rule of thumb is to ask yourself: When was the last time you saw a bad film with Tom Hanks in it?
Watched Blue is the Warmest Colour.
come too soon.
happy ending
Even the title of that movie sucks a bag of dicks.
on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the best), how would you rate Monuments Men?
I was thinking of taking the wife to see it.
Missed that. Feel terrible. Will throw myself on my sword.
I just watched Sideways and I really liked it, though Thomas Hayden Church is such an asshole in it. Though watching it now all I could think of was Rhino and Sandman touring wine country. Also, not the nudity I expected.
I counted twenty-two.Hmm?
Finally saw The Room today. It was...well, it was The Room. Not as poorly written as Birdemic but nearly as poorly acted!
Was reasonably entertaining but ultimately unnecessary. Is this a bad thing?
I only saw A Few Good Men a few years ago, but it is one of the films that made me realise that a celebrity may be a weirdo (not an asshole, a weirdo) but that doesn't mean their work isn't top notch. Cruise is oozing with charisma and magnetism in that film, he MAKES that film. Everyone else in it is good, but if you took Cruise out of it the picture would be far poorer.
I'm sorry you disagree with me five months ago
Sandler hasn't been good since the 90sIt may be barely out of the 90s, but watch Punch Drunk Love immediately.
David Spade is the world's worst comedian
Godzilla, a giant radioactive lizard who wasn't actually trying to save anyone, ended up looking more heroic than Superman.
Let that sink in for a moment.
Ok, did it bother anyone how little Godzilla was in Godzilla? Although I kind of likedtheres a thread for Godzilla already (not to toot my own horn for making the thread when the first trailer came out  ). But I think what you wrote in your spoiler is exactly the point of the movie.(click to show/hide)

I watched American Hustle last night. I have no idea what happened in it.
Back from Days of Future's Past and I really enjoyed it, especially Quicksilver oddly enough. He definitely stole the show
He really did.

I would suggest it as the worst line in cinema.

They're embarrassed. How many parents don't get at least a little freaked out when they discover their child isn't completely conventional in real life? Especially in a fantasy setting they seem to be thinking, "If we're scared of our child, what are the citizens going to think? What if they will want to kill them out of fear?"
That's what I've been hearing from everyone, but honestly Tom Cruise is the reason I'm not gonna see it.He's really good in it though.

Leo is amazing.
getting candlewax dropped on his naked assNow I must watch this.
There is way, way, WAY too much nudity in this film, and precious little of it is really editorially justified either.I disagree with the first part, but can't dispute the second. Also Matthew McConoughey's bit is probably my favorite part of the film. (Hums and beats chest)
RIPD.I saw that a month or so ago on HBO Go, it was as terrible as I thought it'd be.
RIPD.I saw that a month or so ago on HBO Go, it was as terrible as I thought it'd be.
Saw it via the same system.
It did made me wonder though; how does a star feel after one of the movies he played in tanked?
I saw I Love You, Man the other day with my girlfriend. One of my favourite films, and it's genuinely a quiet sort of brilliant. The storyline is basically nothing - a man puts his impending marriage at risk with a new bromance - but the performances by Jason Segel (who's about as funny as cancer on How I Met Your Mother, but in films is seemingly really quite brilliant) and especially Paul Rudd (I have never seen someone do awkwardness so absolutely perfectly while still being funny). It's just a really funny film, doesn't have much story, but it's just... really funny throughout and I don't know what more you can ask from a comedy.
St. Trinian's.
Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this.
They're like 75% pointless (but extremely mild) titillation with about 25% shit jokes. Or at least the remakes certainly were. Especially since the moral of the story seemed to be 'dress like a porn star and you will become popular.'
I rewatched Little Miss Sunshine last night. I had forgotten how top-to-bottom fantastic it is. Steve Carell's performance is so amazingly understated that whenever his character says something funny I was surprised that he was capable of humour - despite being played by a comedian. It's truly remarkable, it really is. Everyone in that film does an amazing job.
Come again?
*headdesk*I thought I got it, but I didn't know it was inherently about sheets.
For those not getting it.
'I need you to wash my sheets.'
'Cum again?'
'No, just mayonnaise I swear.'
By the way I watched Swingers and it's fantastic and Vince Vaughan has wasted his entire subsequent career. He's made a few decent things since, but undoubtedly everything since Wedding Crashers has been a waste. (WC is great though)
So this might be cheating since I haven't watched it yet (but did a decade or so ago) but I picked up Snatch on Bluray for $10 today. Should be watching it soon.

Best movie ever.
I just watched Big Trouble in Little China and I'm completely confused. I don't remember anyone explaining much of anything, and everyone, except Jack, just takes it in stride like nothing is wrong.
Watched the Full Monty last night. Never seen it before. Very funny, very sweet, very real. I feel like films like it don't really get made any more, or TV shows for that matter.
I'm intrigued in your thoughts on the movie, please do tell.

I remember watching that when I was a teenager, and thinking that everyone was just very nonchalant about some incredible shit happening all around them. Like this just happens every Tuesday or something.

I watched White House Down last night...It's fun as shitAgreed
I watched White House Down last night.
Typical Emmerich, shit blows up and is seen through the eyes of everyday Americans like you and me and Roland (at most one of those is actually American).
It is entertaining, terrible shit and I enjoyed every second of it. It's appalling but so much fun. And the cast was a who's who of 'that guy from'. It had a guy from Step Brothers/Cabin In The Woods, James Woods, the blonde McPoyle from It's Always Sunny, the security guard from Devil, Daniels from The Wire, Maggie Gylenhaal and God knows who else.
And Channing Tatum.
It's fun as shit, though.
Just watched Dredd. I thought it was quite good. Lots of slow then fast moments. The juxtaposition really works. Shame there wont be a sequel.
Karl Urban did an excellent job as Dredd though I have not read the comics he is based on. My only real exposure to Judge Dredd is this guy:

Haha why would she do that? And I hope she didn't tell you.
It's definitely cool to read people's different takeaways from the movie.
I think I saw American Beauty 10 years ago. I'm also probably a bit older than both of you, so maybe that influenced my feelings of cliché.
the Millerness.I mean I know who Frank Miller is and I kind of get what this means (and I love Sin City) but I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to.
Nancy's a dancer, thank you very much :roll:His sexism, as well as several other nastier bits of his personality bleed into his work like a severe head wound, though.
a movie with an excellent premise that's executed in the most standard of ways
a movie with a semi-interesting plot but uninspired execution
Yes, but why? Why would anyone not turn it off?
Fantastic Mr. Fox?
Never saw the movie, although the book by Roald Dahl is ingrained in my memory. Even had the audiobook on cassette!
the best work I have ever seen from Adam SandlerYou really need to see Punch Drunk Love.
I still can't believe how good that movie is.
On every smartphone I've had it's been on by default. I assumed she was too shortsighted to turn it off.Since this whole discussion I have a new phone and there's no option to turn the shutter sound off. Bizarre. There's probably a way to do it but I haven't figured it out yet.

White? :?Granted, this was before camera phones were all over the place, but before my Leica M6 was stolen, the rubberised cloth shutter made almost no noise, and since it wasn't a big camera it was mostly ignored, as in "may I take your picture", and when I got a positive reply, people simply forgot the thing was there. If I was a total fuck-head, I could have gotten plenty of naughty shots with that thing.
Also I'd think "someone's hand is holding something down there" would be more of a giveaway than a shutter sound if someone was actually to do that.
sitnspin, I think I could do a whole aside rant on the various myths and fantasies there. They're pretty darned annoying.

So very good. I could say more, but the less you know going in, the better. Don't look up anything about this movie.

I love me some Disney...but I have never seen a Ghibli movie other than the one with the goldfish girl. I was unimpressed. Mulan is just so amazing. I can't express how much I love that movie. "Be a Man" is totally on my workout mix. :)That song, and the training montage that goes along is great!
Well, "Grave of the Fireflies" is something that one can't watch the first 10 minutes of without crying, but it's a good film. "Tonari no Totoro", "Nausicäa", "Mononoke Hime" and "Whisper of the Heart" are all classics. And both "Spirited Away", and "Howl's Moving Castle" are brilliant as well. Ponyo was actually one of their weaker films IMO, although I did rather like it.
Now, I'm off to go watch the new TMNT (from Michael Bay, no less).Oh dear god you poor S.O.B. Why?!
I am well aware of the stupidity of the whole 10% of our cerebral capacity statements.

I saw The Theory of Everything tonight. If Eddie Redmayne doesn't get nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking, I will be shocked. If he wins, I won't be at all surprised.
I haven't seen the trailer, but most of it isn't sad. Most of it's quite enjoyable. Also wait, I thought she was your fiancee now.
Just saw Horrible Bosses 2. It was...ok, I guess? I was never convinced that this movie had a reason for existing, though. I get that's usually the case for sequels, but...still.Just rewatch Horrible Bosses, this is the type of sequel that goes "hey, remember that joke you liked the first time? WASN'T IT HILARIOUS? HERE IT IS AGAIN LOOK AT IT."
Saw Birdman today. Holy shit, what a movie. Do yourself a favor and go in knowing absolutely nothing.
Lilo always acts like a young child
She disciplines me real good - sometimes five times a day! With bricks. In a pillowcase...
I've seen some of that, but I don't see it as relevant to what I like her for, her acting. Looking at performances like Winters Bone, Hunger Games, Silver Linings. She's strong in both portrayal and range. So long as that off-screen stuff doesn't start to bleed into her acting peformances, I'm not going to stop going to see films she's in or stop liking her for her performances. This, plus all the offscreen stuff from JLaw seems to just be "she'd be fun to hang out with".
And really, saving colossal asshattery such as Tom Cruise, why would we ever judge an actor for anything other than their acting?

So, for some reason, my family was watching Catwoman. I can't think of one redeeming quality from the movie, it was as if the director was like, "yeah, tight costume, boobs are out... okay, just fill in the rest with whatever".
There was one scene where the main romance or whatever the heck it was, was playing basketball in front of kids. The kids were doing the "OH, you got served!" kind of chanting, even though the main characters were kinda just standing around kind of being able to dribble, but not really. All I could think was "really? you couldn't have had them doing literally anything else?" But then I realized that was my whole experience watching the film.

I think most directors doing superhero movies pre-2008 were only cashing in. No interest or respect at all in the material.
I'd say X-Men in 2000 was the start of comic book movies being done well.
I saw Birdman.
That film. Is magnificent.
2008 didn't put a complete stop to that, though. *cough*Green Lantern*cough*
It won't be the same on small screen.
The five-year engagement is hilarious and silly and also a little gut wrenching.
QUOTE GOES HERE
I enjoyed the film, but it's basically, "Don't move to Michigan or your life will die"
The target run time for a Hollywood movie is 90 minutes. Is this remotely true anymore outside of comedies? Two hours seems to be the general rule now, and most comic book movies are pushing 150 minutes.

Saw Kingsman tonight. Just a redonculus amount of fun.

Yeah, Lucas Moodysson is very good at writing and directing young actors. Fucking Amal and Lilya4Ever are brilliant pieces of work.
Agree! Insurgent is better than the first Divergent movie.
Agree! Insurgent is better than the first Divergent movie.
I saw Divergent, that's not a high bar to hurdle.
My coworker has the falalalala fist bump sound as her text tone and it never fails to make me smile :)
The movie had super dirty jokes though. "prepare your bot" was the worst of them....because bot sounds like butt? I'm missing something.
I just watched It Follows and I enjoyed it, though I didn't think it was as scary as I was told.
But, what about X2 where he tries to murder every non-mutant? :(
Ha. I did like the mutation joke.
Just seemed like Magneto in your world would have more... I dunno... straight up murdered them than been rude to them.
I just bought your script for eight billion dollars.
Saw Kingsman tonight. Just a redonculus amount of fun.:clairedoge: man I was just scrolling through to see if anyone had brought up that movie! It was very well done
-Outland was alright, a nice, bleak interpretation of the future. But man so many people made a lot of dumb mistakes in the movie. I did like the way that people exploded when the pressure changedOutland is a much underrated film IMHO, and one of my favourite SF films overall, but it could be given the alternative title Explosive Decompression: The Movie. And yes, I do know that exposure to vacuum would not do that (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ExplosiveDecompression).
Rewatched Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Not only is it a better movie than I remember it being, it actually has a fucking amazing opening scene.
We really wanted to see Book of Mormon in NYCI plan on seeing it, but it's still way too fucking expensive, even though it's been out for years.
You rang?
I just watched the first Mad Max, and I find it weird how far it's come. I don't remember them telling us the world ever really ended, it mostly looks like they live out in the middle of nowhere instead of a post apocalyptic landscape. The original Mad Max isn't post-apocalyptic at all, merely a ten-minutes-into-the-future exaggerated crapsack version of late '70s Australia. It isn't until Road Warrior (AKA Mad Max 2) that a global war over oil resources is introduced as background. I have not yet seen Mad Max: Fury Road, but of the other three films, the first is my favourite because it is lower-key and more grounded in reality.
took the kids and saw the new Star Wars.
While I appreciate Disney's resurrecting the franchise...
JJ Abrams needs to be skinned alive and then dunked in alcohol.

...why?
Finally watched the Star Wars trilogy for the first time. It was okay. Some really good scenes, some really bad scenes, and a lot of just okay scenes.
The ending animation didn't fit the overall movie very well, I would have rather seen an action scene over it or just a standard cut to black.I get why they did that (he basically became the comic book he wrote, not realizing he was basing it on himself), but yeah, it just didn't work.
I just watched the Birdcage and it was a fun movie, if extremely dated. It's weird seeing Gene Hackman in this after watching The Quick and the Dead and Unforgiven
Krampus I think is a genuine legend, isn't it? I can't be bothered to Google.
I just watched A Christmas Horror Story and I'm wondering whether it or Krampus were created first.
I can't get past his voice, which is the same one he used for R.I.P.D.
I just watched Unfriended and Seventh Son, two very different movies. Unfriended is a somewhat subtle horror movie told through a laptop about a vengeful ghost taking her fury out on her old friends, while Seventh Son is a fantasy epic. I definitely liked the story of Unfriended better, it really uses the laptop in creative ways, though the visuals in Seventh Son were pretty good.
I still can't get past the fact that Jeff Bridges is in Seventh Son, he's just so goofy in it.
I'm not a big fan of the whole 'eye for an eye' thing.
Have you seen The Babadook? It's a great film (in my opinion) by a first time director too!I haven't yet, but the friend I saw both The Witch and 10 Cloverfield Lane highly recommended it as well! I'll probably see it sooner or later.
superhero films = avoidThat's hardly fair
There was always the hope that the failure was a marketing one and not the movie itself.
I don't much like Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner or Robert de Niro
I haven't seen it, but...Peter Dinklage, so it can't be all bad, right?
I'm gonna miss Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan PeeleWait, where are they going? Did their show get cancelled?
Yeah, the last episode was in September 2015Dang, I'm watching the last season now, didn't know there wouldn't be another until now. Gonna see Keanu tonight, though!
Gonna see Keanu tonight, though!Just saw it and it was everything I hoped it would be.
First of all, it was IMAX 3D, so it cost £15, which I think is in the region of $28?
Second of all, I went with students for work so I paid nothing. In fact, I GOT paid to watch it
According to all the reviews I've seen of the movie so far... you still got ripped off. I'm sad, because I was really hoping it would be good. Blizzard has a reputation of canning projects if they think they aren't going to live up to their standards. Which makes me wonder how an apparently horrible movie got by them.
Oh, why, why?....why did I watch The VVitch alone, with the lights off last night???So fucking good.
Just watched the new Ghostbusters and it's so good. It's also a great example of how to do cameos
Was Drive any good?
Ghostbusters
Fuck the internet, I had a good time :)
I gotta admit, I'm really looking forward to a sequel... but I hope they get a different director.
To be fair, very few horror films are actually scary. I can't really remember the last one I saw that was.
I can't remember the last genuinely scary horror film I watchedI can. The Witch earlier this year. Although maybe Green Room, which I saw slightly more recently. The Witch was definitely scarier, but both were just organically terrifying, not relying on jump scares at all.
Just saw the Magnificent Seven remake. The performances were good, and the action scenes were ok, but overall...meh. Then again, I still need to see the original (and the real original, the Seven Samurai).Def watch Seven Samurai, it is a masterpiece of filmmaking.
Just watched The Maze Runner and enjoyed it.(click to show/hide)
Then I went to fanfiction.net (https://www.fanfiction.net/crossovers/Maze-Runner-Trilogy/6247/#) and... there isn't one crossover with Portal! I mean, if there was any film that I've seen that absolutely cries out for it to all be one of GLaDOS's sadistic rats-in-a-maze 'experiments' it's that one! I mean, when they got into the service tunnel beyond the maze, I honestly expected to hear Still Alive start playing!(click to show/hide)
That's the most damning positive review I've ever read.
I finally saw Big Hero 6, and... it's a masterpiece.I love how it really deals with lose.
It's an absolute work of art. Possibly the best animation Disney has ever made and that includes Pixar. What a moving, funny, astonishing, original, beautiful piece of work.
a film thought also suitable for streaming on mobile devicesWhich is absolutely ridiculous when you consider many films end up on Netflix, why would the chain care if it was planned that way from the start?
I have not read the books, so I didn't come to the TV series with preconceptions about the characters. I suppose the problem with the divergent physical types of human growing up on Earth, Mars or the Belt is simply that actors, especially in American television, just don't get on in the profession if they don't conform to conventionally attractive norms, but the casting doesn't really doesn't make much effort in this area.
While I am somewhat disappointed with some of the casting choices (Holden in particular, and Amos to a lesser degree, who I always pictured as black for some reason)

Honestly, I enjoyed it, but I'm apparently the only one who thought the first was better. I wasn't disappointed, in that I didn't expect it to surpass the first one, but it wasn't a Winter Soldier scenario.

* My 2 cents? The Major is a very tall and very muscular woman with amazing motor control. ScarJo is barely 1.60m. I'd have casted somebody like Zoe Bell (an Asian Zoe Bell would of course be better). Why Zoe Bell? You ever seen Death Proof? Because she's big and athletic and (not-Hollywood) beautiful and she has jaw-dropping motor control, and she can jump into a driving car through the window like it's nothing at all.I've seen Death Proof and I don't remember that. Where'd it happen?

* My 2 cents? The Major is a very tall and very muscular woman with amazing motor control. ScarJo is barely 1.60m.In which version of GITS is Motoko Kusanagi very tall? In the manga and animated films she isn't particularly tall, and in the GITS:SAC series, she's the shortest in Section Nine after Aramaki. I believe that canonically she's supposed to be 168cm (5'6"), at least until Ghost in the Shell: Arise came along, and made her shorter.
Saw Dunkirk tonight. Very good. Easily Nolan's best movie since The Dark Knight.

I think my main issue is that I increasingly find myself identifying with Drax.I don't see what the issue is there.
One-dimensional but otherwise good antagonist.I did, however, hate this guy. Whatever merits he may have had were undercut by a combination of his rubber mask animation and his booming everywhere-voice, which made it seem like he wasn't actually speaking in every one of his close-up scenes.
There are two extra scenes. The first is is great. The second will make you want to hunt down someone at WB and kick them repeatedly in the shins. My friend asked me about this scene and all I could come up with was that the guy probably has a really edgy name like Deathstrike or something.
Fun fact, Deadpool ripped off Deathstroke, with Wade Wilson being an imitation of Slade Wilson. Even Deadpool's co-creator Fabian Nicieza pointed it to Rob "No Sense of Human Anatomy and Pouch Fetishist" Liefeld. Reportedly Liefeld went "meh" and went back to drawing Captain America with the large bust....I was right?!?!
It is funny how much back and forth Marvel and DC have had over the years; Man-Bat to the Lizard, Tim Drake to Peter Parker, Doctor Everything to Doctor Manhattan, Thanos to Darkseid to Doctor Doom (yeah, you read that one right).
I watched Will Smith's new NETFLIX special movie: "BRIGHT".Interesting. That's probably one of the first outright good review I've seen of it. Maybe I'll check it out at some point.
It's very good. great suspension of disbelief.
Kept me on the edge of my seat.
While NOT a comedy, it has some hilarious moments.
I'd give it 4 stars out of 5.
Tangled. Man, it was good. Really threw me for a loop there at the end. I'm surprised I've not heard anyone sing its praises until one of my friends told me she loved it recently.
I heard it is best not to get candy or anything that would make noise when watching "A Quiet Place." Mostly because you will scare yourself/the other viewers.
Just watched "I am your Father", the Documentary about David Prowse and his shabby treatment at the hands of Lucasfilm in general.
The rumours put out about this guy were ridiculous, and all of them were debunked by simple fact checking and actual discussion with those purported to have started them.
Unfortunately, the whole thing is let down by the "film-maker", either consciously or subconsciously, looking to big up his own role in his film.
And the farce of "We're going to re-shoot the Vader demasking scene with David" and then... after seeing the build up, and the set and the makeup all of which looked spot on... they don't show it.
It's an interesting enough doc. but ultimately left me both angry (at the truth about the LACK of Prowse "spoilers coming out), and at Lucasfilms' producers going... "He had a reputation of speaking to the press. He gave away this.. he gave way that.. and then saying "Oh. We thought he was giving away secrets!" but it making NO difference to the treatment Prowse received, (receiving NO invitations to appear at any *Official* Star Wars conventions.)
And of course, now he's dead...
So, angry at that... and also miffed and a bit "false advertising-y" at the omission of the "climactic" re-shoot footage.
Not that it invalidates any of your arguments, but AFAIK David Prowse is still very much alive, no?
Thought, musings, and general tinfoilery in no particular order:(click to show/hide)
Every time I think of watching a Marvel film -
(CUT TO BLACK - FADE IN)
I figure I'll watch the trailer and see if I'm interested.
(CUT TO BLACK - FADE IN)
Inevitably, it will be filled with moments -
(CUT TO BLACK - FADE IN)
Doubtless pregnant with meaning and tension to the regular viewer -
(CUT TO BLACK - FADE IN)
That mean nothing to me whatsoever.
(CUT TO BLACK)
So I can't get interested and I never end up watching them.
With Mary and the Witch's Flower, [Studio Ponoc has] come both too close and not close enough, resulting in an adventure that can never climb out of the uncanny valley it digs for itself.
I saw Logan Lucky tonight. A fun enough heist movie, I guess.
I saw it a few weekends ago with the kids. It's hilarious, has a TWist, and was fun picking out all the NASCAR driver cameos. :-D
Saw Ocean's 8 and Hereditary. Ocean's 8 didn't really have any surprises, it was pretty by the book, but the cast was so much fun (and clearly had so much fun making it) that I enjoyed it the whole way through. Hereditary was...intense. I won't say anything else, because I went in blind, and I've heard the trailer is super spoilery, so if you can handle some really, really harsh and intense things happening, go for it.

I'm aware of that, but I didn't get the impression he was totally evil. It would be nice if the villain wasn't beyond redemption once in a while.
Ant-Man and the WaspJust saw it, and I both agree with this and I'm disappointed in myself for not thinking of it before I saw it here.
It was f-ANT-astic
Saw The Meg on Sunday.
Not a bad film, definitely worth a rewatch when it comes out on DVD. A little disappointed that Jason Statham didn't punch the shark more, but in all fairness there were some genuinely scary moments and some outright funny parts.
That said, having read the book years ago, this is definitely a case where they've taken a couple of character names and the shark from the book and made a completely different story. And I'm still trying to decide if that is a good thing or not.
Scott Pilgrim has some cool shit in it, but I struggle to enjoy it because almost nobody else seems to clock that he's the villain in his own movie.
Scott Pilgrim, on the other hand, I found a compulsive read. The character of Scott is a convincing depiction of a drifter in his early 20s, quite similar to some I know, in fact. The way he approaches the difficulties in his developing relationship (represented by the evil exes) is also nicely shown - and again realistic in the way that several of them he can only beat with support from his friends or outside help (the Vegan Police!). His, and Ramona's, problems with deciding whether the effort is worthwhile are also well covered. And as an outside observer of the culture concerned, I found discovering details of the references to music and games most intriguing as well. The film doesn't, on the whole, quite measure up to the books, I think. Although I can't criticise his playing of the part, I simply didn't find that Michael Cera looked the part somehow; and the ending was weak in comparison with the books (which of course hadn't been finished when the screenplay was written). But the fantastic energy and pace of the film, and the way it incorporated print and game effects into the live action, were all highly impressive, making it a worthwhile film to see in spite of its flaws; the music wasn't bad either. So when someone in a now defunct forum described Scott Pilgrim as "the shitty FLCL", obviously I had to find out what they were talking about.

Saw the new Netflix-released Coen brothers movie "The legend of Buster Scruggs".How does it measure up to Blood Simple? That's my high-water mark for Coen films; while I've enjoyed most of their other films I consider the most popular ones to be overrated (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona, etc.)
[snip]
But seriously, it's good; typical Coen movie in many ways, interesting shorts with some unpredictable endings and generally wellcast and likable actors.

Mary Poppins Returns (which I also absolutely loved and genuinely don't get how it's getting some bad reviews).
Mary Poppins Returns (which I also absolutely loved and genuinely don't get how it's getting some bad reviews).
I haven't seen either the original Mary Poppins or the new movie, but my guess would be that the new movie would get at least some bad reviews regardless of what it did and how well it did it. The original movie is such a beloved classic that it has a place in collective American consciousness completely divorced from the fact that it's a good movie on its own. It's part of the cultural landscape and whatnot. It's untouchable, so I'll assume to at least some audiences, and to some critics, making a new movie about MP is sacrilege. Or at least, the old movie is an impossible act to follow.
So I'd assume a new Mary Poppins movie was dommed to at least SOME bad reviews the same way that a new Star Wars movie is always doomed to some bad reviews. It's just a fact of nature.
(PL Travers was quite a strange person and was VERY defensive of her creation - she never liked the original film at all and loathed not only Disney, but the 'american way' of creating 'popular culture'... her will (again!) made comments that no americans were 'allowed' to be involved in the Cameron McIntosh musical based on Poppins!)
Personally, I'd like to see if they have had the bottle to make Poppins the verging on nasty character that she actually is in the books.
"I didn't want to just do a bad impersonation of Julie," Blunt said.
"I mean that should be preserved and treasured and kept as it is. And no-one is going to out-Julie Julie Andrews. Ever."
Instead, Blunt said she drew inspiration from the books, written by Australian-born author Pamela Lyndon Travers, which have a rather different take on Ms Poppins.
"She's weird and eccentric and completely unknowable and rude," Blunt said.
"[She] reveals none of her inner workings. She's completely enigmatic."
It's a characterisation that might have pleased Travers far more than the original reportedly ever did.

That's the focus of the movie Saving Mister Banks, isn't it?
Not a movie, but I've started watching Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's Wellington Paranormal.
I finally rented the Kingsman sequel. Now every time I hear "Almost Heaven, West Virginia" I will go to three or four on the scale of sadness where Fry's dog is a 10.That movie currently sits on DVR waiting to be watched. I consider myself warned.

WHOA!!!!
Where is this to be found!?
"Please Stand By", the Dakota Fanning movie about the autistic writer who runs away from her assisted living facility to hand-deliver a Star Trek script to Paramount. Content warning: scenes of cruelty to the vulnerable.
GitS was enjoyable too, and I didn't have a problem with ScarJo playing the Major
I was referring to the "whitewashing" charge. But this was more like Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3 than like Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.GitS was enjoyable too, and I didn't have a problem with ScarJo playing the Major
Hmmmmg - I did, a little bit. I felt that Johansson did a weird 'robo-walk' in some scenes, perhaps to emphasize that 'Yes, zis is a mighty powerful Robot that looks like a petite woman'. That thing where she squares her shoulders, hardly moves her arms & walks as if some cretin had told her to 'walk like a man'. Bit weird compared to her (+stuntdouble's) performance in the Avengers movies (Awesome!).

The main plot of this movie is never really verbally acknowledged at any point. Zorro (I forget the character name but he isn't Zorro yet) is this dude living in Spain, and he is an amazing swordsman. He has to travel to California, where his father used to rule the province, and he finds that a new guy is running the place and he's a despot.
So Zorro decides to invent the Zorro alter ego to take this guy down, and begins alienating his friends and family by portraying himself out of the mask as a weak, scatterbrained, nouveau riche asshole. He never once vocalises that he is doing this, even when revealing who he truly is to people. It's ENTIRELY played through his performance. It's electrifying and subtle at the same time.
You are right, of course. Well, I called it 'live-action', not 'real-life', but it is neither. It's some kind of motion-tracked animation afaik.
Are you thinking of motion capture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_capture)?
I haven't seen "I'm gonna git you sucka!" in over a decade. I caught the ending half when I got home today and was reminded how amazing it was. To the uninitiated, think of the movie Airplane but instead of it being a spoof of airplane disaster movies, it spoofs blaxploitation movies. Written, directed, and staring Keenen Ivory Wayans.Awesome film. John Vernon's appearance and monologue is one of the best reveals ever.
I realised today that Buckaroo Banzai is 35 years old this year.I read a few years back that Kevin Smith was making BB into a teevee series; season 1 to retell the story of the film, and season 2 to be "Against the World Crime League".
hoo boy
[snip]Probably my favorite anime! I must seek out this film.
What is this extraordinary film? It's called Kanashimi no Beradona - Belladonna of Sadness.
Apparently it was also an influence on Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Just saw Blockers with my wife. Fun movie. Hunter is the best and he just gets shit on the entire movie. :grumpypuss:That one is sleeping on my DVR since the last "Free HBO" weekend (along with a few other films we recorded then).

Isn't the "real" title Cock Blockers? It's basically American Pie with girls as the main characters, right?
I know its TV and not a movie but since we got HBO to watch Game of thrones, Fraggle Rock is on HBO around the time we try to put my 1yo daughter to bed. Unlike other shows where she doesn't care to watch and gets fussy (Except TNG, she loves Picard's voice) she has been utterly entranced with the Fraggles. I've never seen her so enthralled in a TV show since TNG. I haven't seen Fraggle rock since I was a kid on the Disney channel (when the cable company would give it to us for free for a week to entice new subscriptions which only happened once a year if we were lucky). I am just so excited that she likes it. We almost didn't watch it yesterday (her first time watching it) because my wife was worried it would be too loud for her to fall asleep to. I asked her to give it a chance and sure enough my daughter was glued to watching it while drinking her milk and was ready for bed by the end of it.
Watched two episodes of Jack Ryan on Prime. That's two hours of my life I won't get back ...
got my tickets to Avengers: Endgame for tomorrow.
I'm excited.
Good, now I know to avoid that one.
As long as we're talking series, I've been enjoying American Gods and Hanna a lot. Good Omens can't come soon enough!
Could just be good at doing his lines phonetically through rote. IIRC, Peter Lorre had to do that for several films when he first came to the US.
I, uh, can't actually get Vikings? I thought Amazon didn't do region restriction. My subscription is even made through the German domain, so I'd expect to have the same selection as you.
The Expanse looked interesting, so I'll check that out.
The Expanse is among the very best scifi shows of the past few years. There are some lulls in each season due to pacing issues, but the characterization & chemistry just get better and better. That flip-and-burn sequence still gives me goosebumps :)
What I like about The Expanse is that it's not too far away now, physics still applies in full, and everyone is as human as it gets. Plus the show does a good job.

Saw Endgame last Saturday....also when he was walking around in sloppy clothes and sunglasses, my wife whispered "He looks like The Dude."
I felt represented and validated when I saw Fat [redacted] onscreen :-D
I'm guessing it's just stimulants and things to increase your blood pressure so you don't pass out and go limp, which would leave you unable to brace against the g-forces and break your neck or something? That would explain why it woke Alex right up.
By now, I've read all the books. The show changes a few things due to pacing and stuff, but not too much.

Apart from the fact that there ain't no stealth in space (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewardetect.php#nostealth), but you can't win 'em all, I guess.
<snip>
Edit: Or why not have gimballed couches? If you bring heart and brain on the same height relative to the direction of acceleration, there'd be no g-lock at all - In airplanes that's not feasible, as a lying position would restrict the pilot's field of view. In a spacecraft, that'd be less of a concern - due to the vast distances involved and the absence of a horizon, cutting windows into the hull at a fixed position wouldn't be that useful anyhow compared to just putting up viewscreens wherever it's most convenient for the pilot.
Apart from the fact that there ain't no stealth in space (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacewardetect.php#nostealth), but you can't win 'em all, I guess.
Stealth ships don't actually disappear. The books give a good explanation that those ships use similar stealth tech we know to minimize radar detection, there are countermeasures to infrared/heat detection of the hull, and they're usually painted black as optical camouflage. What they can't hide is the drive plume, aka exhaust, so they'd have to go adrift.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that any thread that begins by pointing out why stealth in space is impossible will rapidly turn into a thread focusing on schemes whereby stealth in space might be achieved.

Then Tony Stark pushed past him and said something like "move it, Lebowski", and we slapped hands :-D
Now I really understand the feeling black people got watching Black Panther, and women got watching Captain Marvel. It IS nice to see a superhero that looks like you.Saw Endgame last Saturday.

Bet you didn't read the link.

Yep. for sure. only need a crappy wig.
Finally watched Aquaman and it was actually alright. So much better than Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, but not quite as good as Wonder Woman or Shazam. So, it's a movie that exists, in other words?
To be fair, Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World, the two Marvel movies I dislike the most, are better then most of the DC movies to date
And Wonder Woman is very good, but most of what pushes it to great is about what it is and represents rather than its quality as a movie,...A lot like Black Panther in that regard.
As well as that, yeah, the Marvel films could get dark, you need only look at Infinity War to know how dark it can get, but there's always that vein of Marvel humour that runs through them. Its hard to find that in the DC films. The DCEU was kneecapped from the beginning by Zack Snyder, who seems to think all superhero movies should be just like Watchmen. Hence the grim and humorless tone.
Wonder Woman and Aquaman are fantastic films, but at the same time, I think DC is going to be a very distant second to Marvel now in the film stakes. Possibly even third with the Monsterverse about to release Godzilla: KotM.
There's just something about the casting in Marvel films where they got it just right. Robert Downey Jr is perfect as Tony Stark, Chris Evans is perfect as Steve Rogers, Chris Helmsworth is perfect as Thor, the list goes on. But with the DC films, the casting always felt like they couldn't get their first choice and ended up having to go for the third or fourth choice.

But anyway, looking forward to what they have planned for Phase 4.

ok slight breach of protocol here.I've owned the DVD for years and I've still yet to put it in a player. In fact I'm not sure I've even pulled the shrink wrap off.
I am going to watch Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind tomorrow, which is back in theaters for a couple of days for its 35th anniversary (35 years old, crazy!). I have been wanting to see it for a long time (which is odd since I have watched the other well-known Miyazaki movies) and am super-excited that I can see it in a nice theater! :)

After watching Ghost in the Shell, it struck me that ScarJo's controversial casting actually makes a whole lot of sense, given the story and the origin of her 'shell'.I thought the same. As I said before, this is more like Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3 than like Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Still baffled by the amount of outrage sparked by Kingsley's casting. It was the best thing in an otherwise rubbish movie.
I get both the reasons why casting ScarJo for GitS is a bad choice, and why it doesn't matter. Given it's a synthetic body, it shouldn't matter, but the cultural aspect shouldn't be ignored either. ScarJo was a choice, and in the end I was more annoyed at the script than the casting. The script was rather bland, and some iconic scenes from the animes stringed together by a Hollywood script. Those recreations of the anime's most notable set pieces were the best part.
Holmes and Watson is as bad as you've heard it is. I loved Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, but I only lasted for 10 minutes

I actually found them annoying because they were taken completely out of context and seemed to be placed there just to try to please fans of the earlier film but obviously done by people with no understanding of the original work.I get both the reasons why casting ScarJo for GitS is a bad choice, and why it doesn't matter. My only problem? Gengar looked wrong! :)
My only problem? Gengar looked wrong! :)
Isn't that the point, Gengar is a ghost pokemon. Its meant to look wrong.
I didn't realise the Canterville Ghost had joined the forum. :-P
Just saw Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
I believe "Wow" and "Holy crap" best sum it up.
I finally watched "GoodFellas". It's a really good movie. But boy, is it hard to watch.I liked Joe Pesci in that movie. He was funny. 😸
(also, given that it's based on real events to some extent, it severely tests my empathy and belief in human goodness. With very sparse exceptions, every time a character died, I was profoundly and viscerally disappointed they died quickly and without prolonged suffering, which is not a reaction I'm proud of, even with fictional characters)

That was a joke. I was playing on how his character took offense to being called "funny."I liked Joe Pesci in that movie. He was funny. 😸
I don't disagree. But "funny" and "disturbing" are not mutually exclusive. Just look at the Joker.

Also, yeah, the point of your comment did go completely over my head. What can I say, I am a dumbass.I, too, have been a knob more often than I'd like.

Watched Jordan Peele's Get Out yesterday.
Good film, but I'm not sure if it would hold up to a second viewing...(click to show/hide)
What's weird to me is just how short Kong is compared to Godzilla
Same. I thought she was being used just as much as Chris was.Watched Jordan Peele's Get Out yesterday.

A bit too late to intersect with my childhood, but regardless -- no, I had no idea of its existence until just now.Same.
The magic mirror faces were nightmare fuel. :venonat:
True, but they just assume you've seen the Disney version or are familiar with the story. Like is Cinderella really going to give you a shocker on what happens? I will say this version of Snow White goes a bit more toward the Grimm Fairy Tale route and do the bodice and comb before the poison apple, like the original story. Plus its just more dark 80s in style. Worth it but then again I haven't seen it since I was like 6 or 7 years old.The magic mirror faces were nightmare fuel. :venonat:
I do like how the trailer basically tells the whole story and leaves no need to actually watch the movie :)
Not sure this counts but, I saw a trailer for the new Netflix movie "Secret Obsession" and the trailer pretty much gives away the mystery/story. It could have been a great mystery thriller...if they didn't solve the mystery in the trailer. So now I have no want to see it. :-\I call that "efficiency" 😁
I just watched Coco. Great movie. I will only be able to watch it once though. The tears. They flowed too much.

Please, an actual shark attack is better than Shark Tale.I admit, that's a low bar to clear. But I also have no great opinion of Despicable Me.
Despicable Me has some nice elements to it, and there is good stuff in there.
Shark Tale is one of the most depressingly cynical, soulless movies I have ever seen.
For me ParaNorman is their top one, with Kubo and Coraline sharing second, Box trolls third, and Missing Link fourth. Coraline is amazing but ParaNorman just hit me in all the right placesI really liked ParaNorman and feel its under appreciated. :venonat:
Mirai (or Mirai of the Future) is another one I'll recommend.
Frozen II.
Enjoyed it, but it was better when it was called The Fifth Element…[snip]
If you've seen Frozen II you would get the joke. And the Avatar reference.Frozen II.
Enjoyed it, but it was better when it was called The Fifth Element…[snip]
Putting those two films in the same review is bold.
Finally watched Misery. I've read the book a dozen times so was really fun to watch. I'd heard Kathy Bates was amazing and yep, she did a wonderful job.Among the best King adaptations.
Season 4 of The Expanse is out!

Verdict?
We watched the first 2 seasons about 2 years ago and loved it, then for various reasons stopped. Honestly I completely missed that Amazon took over after Syfy canceled it.
We started rewatching from the start last week and again love it, in my view it's the best sci-fi show airing right now. Just hoping seasons 3 and 4 hold up :)
Just saying the title "Grave of the Fireflies" is enough to elicit tears in those that have seen it.

I've watched it more than once, it doesn't lose its impact on subsequent viewings. It is still painful. That's how well crafted it is.
I watched Knives Out on thursday and it was very good. Very good twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end
Finally saw Joker this weekend...
Wow!
What a total mind-feck! (In a good way!)
I caught up on "Jojo Rabbit". It's an amazing movie, and if you know it only by reputation and from trailers/wacky scenes, do yourself a favour and watch it. The scenes the movie is best known for do NOT represent the entire movie. Yes, it can be pretty damn funny, but it's not just a "ha ha" comedy if that's what worries you. It's much more than that.
Also, I watched the film on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which wasn't planned, but certainly seems very appropriate.
What didn't you like? I can see many criticisms that you could level at it but I mostly am not bothered by them.
That reminds me, I gotta finish Phineas and Ferb once and for all before I move on to Milo MurphyOh yeah P&F too, I haven't finished. And I recently got access to Netflix so I can watch the new She-ra show too (lately I've been binging season 4 of Lucifer)
Finally watched this fairy tale for grown-ups. It is beautiful but does not shy away from the bleakness of its material.
MMMMMMMM?theodd1sout by chance?
I honestly wish I wasn't missing whatever people see in Godfather. I am firmly in the (very small) "I don't get it" camp. The movie is well-made technically, to the extent that I understand the art of filmmaking, but it utterly fails to move me on any level. I find it tedious and occasionally outright boring.

Not derail from the point of the thread, but I wouldn't mind a film that showed the real Cromwell. You know, the one who ordered the massacre of civilians at the Siege of Drogheda, the mass exportation of "indentured servants" to the Caribbean and left the country in such a state that hundreds of thousands of people died from a bout of famine and bubonic plague. At the end, they could show Cromwell passing away, being buried and then have the Royalists dig up his body, hang it in chains and then behead it.
I'd definitely watch....the ending.
Battle Royale, it's like Hunger Games only JapaneseYeah, I'm resurrecting an 8-year-old post. Battle Royale predates The Hunger Games by a while, and I like to say "they're exactly the same, except that they're completely different." I wrote an essay on the similarities and differences some years ago and I might repost it here some time.

Real talk, I fucking love The Fifth Element. I was just scrolling around youtube and came across a couple of videos covering it (Honest Trailers and 100 Reasons to watch) and it just reminded me how much I just fucking love this movie. If you haven't seen it yet go watch the movie (and don't watch the linked videos if you haven't seen the movie yet either). Is it a perfect movie? Nope! Does it have its flaws? Yup. But its just a fun stylistic movie.Still my favorite movie of all time.
Super green. Most of the time I can't stand Chris Tucker, but he was perfect in that role. I can't imagine anyone better to play Ruby Rhod.

Every action movie about cops is entirely based on the premise that the protagonists are put upon by the system and are actually doing the right thing by breaking the rules and violating people's rights. I will not support that shit.
This discussion has got me thinking about other cop movies. We've mostly talked about action\dramas. What are your feeling about comedies (i.e. Police Academy, Super Troopers, etc) and scifi (RoboCop, Dredd, etc)?Wait, Hot Fuzz isn't a comedy?
Phantasm for me is in the discussion for best Batman movie. Not just animated. Just best.
The DCAU understood these characters more than even a lot of comic writers - shame they all tend to create garbage when left to their own devices.
Don't get me started on the use of 'comedy' in marketing for things that I feel like have no fucking business calling themselves comedies.I failed to laugh even once watching Napoleon Dynamite which coworkers assured me was hilarious.
If anybody in this thread has seen Jeff, Who Lives at Home and can point me to more than half as dozen actual gags in that movie, which was marketed as a comedy, then I'll be amazed.
I watched "Being John Malkovich".I concur with your assessment. It was a really good movie that I don't think I could watch a second time because that ending hurt.
I have a very low tolerance for stories where every single character is an utter piece of shit, and that are extremely bleak.
So I think it should count for a lot that I really liked this movie. At first, I didn't think I would, but it's honestly brilliant. It works on pretty much every level I can think of.

When I first watched the first "Matrix", I thought it was WAY overrated. I rewatched it in late 2010s, and I warmed up considerably to it. On rewatch, I thought the movie is pretty damn brilliant, bordering on genius. It, I feel, only gets better with age.

The story maybe, technology has permeated society in a way back then nobody imagined. It feels more plausible these days. But apart from that, it's also an action flick. As an action flick it's showing its age, and feels VERY 90s, and to some people that may be off-putting.
Admittedly maybe you just wanted to take a cheap shot at Napoleon, which is the kind of thing I do all the time for my own amusementThat's probably it; I don't think I've ever seen another "comedy" less funny than that pointless, story-bereft film. But I also couldn't tell where I was supposed to be laughing, so I also missed the jokes/gags.
I just watched Booksmart. I heard it was good, but it was really good. Like I'm angry I hadn't watched it sooner. It had the right balance of comedy and drama, and to me perfectly captured the current generations dynamics
I just watched two weird movies, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot and The Little Hours
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot was sort of billed as an action movie, but for the most part Sam Elliot is in quiet repose about the things he had to do during the war and flashbacks to when he was with the woman he loved.
The Little Hours is about a group of nuns that take in a runaway and wacky shenanigans ensue. Mainly they wanna get with him/use him in witchcraft rituals. Amazing cast though, including: Allison Brie, Aubrey Plaza,Kate Miccuci, Molly Shannon, Fred Armisen, Dave Franco, John C. Reily, Nick Offerman
Escape from New York.I'll watch anything with Kurt Russell in a major role; my favorite is Big Trouble in Little China.
There are a few elements that date it, but it's a fun movie that deserves its cult status.
Captain Ron is a guilty pleasure of mine that I quote frequently.
Is House of 1000 Corpses the one that sets up Devil's Rejects? Because Rejects is GREAT.
Honestly, it was a nice twist and became about the difference between a father and a dad(dy). They still could have done that with J'sonn. In the comics I've read, and also in the Disney XD animated series, he's kind of a prick and not much of a "dad".
I finally watched "Knives Out".Haven't seen it... but the name of the murdered man reminded me of the old Choose Your Own Adventure series of children's books - one of the first six (I think it was the fourth one) cast the reader as a detective and was titled Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey?
Here's my spoiler-free take on it:
I love murder mysteries. This is one of the best ones I've seen in a long time. The cast is stellar, the dialogue is witty and snappy (which is important in a mystery), the characters are despicable or likeable as appropriate for the plot, the mystery is set up, developed, and concluded very skilfully, and the dramatic tension is maintained through some very well thought-out plotting.
Not only that, but the music is excellent, the humour lands, and here's the most important part:
The plot makes SENSE, so that the viewer can make their own guesses and attempt to figure things out. Which is CRUCIAL. The worst mysteries are ones where new information comes out of the left field with the audience given no foreknowledge to speculate themselves (I'm looking at you, BBC's "Sherlock").
Also, Captain America tells people to eat shit in this movie. Which is the best thing ever.
The movie is damn near perfect, so if any of y'all haven't seen it yet, do so.
Strict adherence to the source material is so overrated.
I know people like to shit on it, but I just love Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. Sure it deviates from the novel a bit (a lot) but its just so fun to watch. The cinematography is just so great! Poor Keanu was a total miscast though.Reeves and Ryder both were awful in that film. We're it not for Oldman and Hopkins, there would be no compelling reason to watch it.
I would argue the film is worth watching for the aesthetics alone. It is an absolutely gorgeous film. The visuals alone make it worth every minute. The sound is great too. As a sensory experience, the film is top notch.Okay, fair.
I read that they originally wanted Johnny Depp to play Johnathan Harker, but the studio execs said he was too much of an unknown and to go with Keanu since he was more familiar with public audiences. The Harkers should have been cast with English actors. Even I can do a better accent than Reeves or Ryder did.
I also liked Sleepy Hollow. I haven't watched it in years but I thought it was great too. Dracula though is my go to for the Halloween season. Hocus Pocus too.
What's your opinion of The Godfather? Its a real slow burn, was intriguing and I am glad I to have watched it. However its too much of a commitment to watch it. If I see Dracula on tv or offered on a stream service, I'd probably watch it. I do not feel that way toward The Godfather.

(Edit: Tokyo Godfathers is my favorite Christmas movie.)
I like to mix it up every Christmas by bringing in a new Christmas movie for the in-laws to watch. I wasn't sure what they would think of Tokyo Godfathers since I myself hadn't seen it but my father-in-law loved itWhat did you think of it?
Are we talking "Die Hard is a Christmas movie!" Christmas movies here? No, nothing like that. I saved that for my old work place when I would bring in movies that are set during Christmas but have nothing to do with it, like Die Hard, Batman Returns, Iron Man 3, etc.
explaining absolutely everything to your audienceWait.. there are films like that? What terrible viewing that'd make. Well, maybe it could be done well.. I doubt.
I was very suspicious of Frozen 2's very existence, but it is astonishingly good. There have been a handful of animated sequels that I think have actually surpassed their predecessors, I don't think this one quite did that, but it is a pretty jaw-dropping movie.I liked it better when it was called Avatar: The Last Airbender :-D
Yes. In part, I do mean "don't explain everything exposition style" (show, don't tell).
I also mean, "leave at least something for the audience to interpret."

Warning: snark overflow:?
So it turns out too much snark, becomes anti-snark.Warning: snark overflow:?
Random movie I watched recently: 'Animal World'. Lots of 'Deadpool' vibes. The movie is mostly in Chinese, but about 20 minutes in Michael Douglas shows up and starts speaking English. Kinda threw me off 😁 The premise of the movie sounds a bit ridiculous (playing rock-paper-scissors with very high stakes), but it involves a lot of chance calculations and human psychology.I saw the previews for that and it looked interesting. I'll have to check it out.
I enjoyed this movie once I got into it.
Still not clear on what you're referring to.So it turns out too much snark, becomes anti-snark.Warning: snark overflow:?
Sorry, it's one of those things that becomes tacitly understood---it's `obvious'---after a while inured in the schlock---there's even a website named after it (http://stackoverflow.com/), so it kinda slipped my mind that it's jargon. An `overflow,' often, is a (computer) error condition about too-much. ALL I was asking is what particular post prompted the "snark overflow" comment.

I'm honestly surprised how good Pirates was after being so disappointed in Flushed Away, and it also has my favorite gif of all timeThat one along with;

The live-action Gin Tama.
Now I know what it feels like to speedrun an entire season of an anime in 2 hours and 20-ish minutes.
It's weird.
Especially when they keep in a good chunk of the gags. Makes the comedic timing feel off. That said, the sheer number of references to other anime and manga is astouding and probably pretty ballsy during the manga's initial run. Granted, it's mostly stuff from Shonen Jump, but the Ghibli one threw me for a loop.

There have been a handful of animated sequels that I think have actually surpassed their predecessors, I don't think this one quite did that, but it is a pretty jaw-dropping movie.I'd say that it did, and that it's not even close. Frozen is good, Frozen 2 is considerably better in every way.
I just saw Frozen 2, and I have to say, I like the first one better.
It was "ok" at best until(click to show/hide)
After that it got exponentially better. I think, for me anyways, its because up to that point it seemed to only have a cool mystery. The songs, jokes, and some of the other scenes seemed to try to rehash moments from the previous film, until we get to the spoiler. After the spoiler part, the movie really came into its own. I just wished the first part leading up to it "went for it" the way the spoiler and events afterward did. I usually don't give #/10 scores but I felt like this one was a 7.5/10. It was good. Better than okay, but not great nor amazing. The first film, on the other hand, blew me away and was deserving of a 9 or 10.

I picked up the Deep Blue Sea trilogy just before my birthday. In a pique of lockdown frustration, I ended up watching all three yesterday. These aren't particularly deep (heh) films, so I'm not going to say too much about them.
Deep Blue Sea, still not a bad film after 20+ years. CGI still largely holds up today.
Deep Blue Sea 2 - despite being made in 2018, the sharks look worse. Plot is essentially the same, almost making it a remake, "Oh we're making a new drug. Lets genetically enhance sharks to make them smarter!" Definitely the worst of the 3.
Deep Blue Sea 3 - Not a bad film, but that's not really saying much considering how low a bar the second film set. Tries to be a little different, both in terms of location and general problem, which helps it stand apart from the previous films. Still not as good as the first one.
This week's Thursday movie night we got half an hour into Age of Innocence before getting annoyed with it and giving up.
EDIT: They could have tried to adapt Larry Niven and Steve Barnes Saturn's Race if they wanted to do something interesting with genetically enhanced sharks.
They'd absolutely have to keep in the bit where one of the sharks is asked the meaning of life, stops swimming, and answers "Keep moving. Otherwise you sink."
[May have botched the quote, it's been years since I read the book.]
Vaguely reminds me of that masterpiece of James Cameron's that is 'Dark Star' - the bit about debating phenomenology with an intelligent kamikaze fission device.

Hey, now.. that ol' hack had nothing to do with the amazing Dark Star (pre cursor to ALIEN).
I'm sure you know you mean John Carpenter/Dan O'Bannon...? ;)
Today I watched all the parts of How to train your dragon, all 3 parts and realized that this is one of the best cartoons in my life.

Then I watched the Nostalgia Critic's review of it and he just does not get it. Like at all. Like no fun to be had.
That's not even a hot take, that's just a given. ID4 is a piece of crap. MA is a masterpiece of satire. The last good film Burton made.
I watched a film student reaction video of it yesterday and even theyThey are both garbage, but at least ID4 is fun and terrible instead of just terrible
As crappy as ID4 is, I still like it better than War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. The only enjoyable part of WotW was the tripods.
I actually love Sleepy Hollow. Less because of Burton (aside from the visual atmosphere) and Depp than Ricci, Richardson, Walken, etc.I do too. Its a fun movie that is an homage to Hammer Horror films. Depp's portrayal of Ichabod Crane isn't all that interesting, but the rest of the cast and the plot was fun and engaging. Maybe Depp was suppose to be the audience, just kind of trying to use logic to CSI everything only to be swept up into a supernatural mystery.

I realize this is entirely subjective, but you don't think any of Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, and Corpse Bride (especially this one) are any good?
I saw "Earwig and the Witch." It was interesting and reminded me of the kind of novel you'd read in late Elementary school or in Middle School (it is based on a book apparently). Its about an orphan that gets adopted by a cruel witch that puts her to work in her shop. The ending felt a bit rushed after so much build up and it leaves you with questions and wanting more. Its my 2nd Studio Ghibli movie and it was alright. I think I liked it better than "Ponyo" but I didn't feel satisfied with it. The film seemed like a pilot for a show or the first installment for a movie series. Again I liked it but wished it was 20-30 minutes longer.
Of course, wasn’t Nausicaa technically pre-Ghibli?
I just watched Wish Dragon and Luca
Wish Dragon feels like a more modern Aladdin, but swap the middle eastern setting for China. Sony Pictures has really been on a roll lately with this and Mitchells vs. the Machines
Luca quite honestly feels like a Ghibli movie

I'm gonna need a source on that.

I'm gonna need a source on that. I'm only seeing middle eastern folktale origins. I like tracing stories. Its fun. It's also worth noting that different cultures can have similar stories but not be connected in anyway. Like Native American stories that resemble Cinderella, and Hawaiian Night Marchers being similar to North European Wild Hunt. Its what prompted Karl Jung to believe there may be a collective unconscious.
Watched Raya and the Last Dragon. The general consensus in my family was that it was visually beautiful, but overall didn't live up to the hype. The dialogue felt really stilted and oddly paced, almost like characters were reacting to what was being said before it was actually said. It also drove the plot too hard; every conversation was hitting you over the head with the point it was trying to make. That's present to some degree in a lot of Disney movies, but even more so in this one.
Seriously, though, the animation is ridiculous; they NAILED water physics. Look up a clip of it at some point.
I know there is a sequel, but I am worried it may taint the intentional ambiguity of this ending.
Luca quite honestly feels like a Ghibli movie
I'll probably continue over in the What Are You Currently Reading thread, but the very next day after seeing Blade Runner, I had a 12 hour drive from Mass to Michigan and I got the audiobook "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and wow is that a different story. Like in so many ways. There's a handful of similar characters names and 2-3 similar scenes but it is by and far its own story with completely different characters. The author (Phillip K. Dick) got to read the script for Blade Runner before he passed away and he noted that not only did he like it, but both the movie and book would complement each other. Like they could exist in the same world at the same time and support each other.

I read that a couple years ago (without watching Blade Runner; watched it later and hated it), and it just confused me. There wasn't any particular scene or storyline that lost me, but the whole time, I just wasn't sure why anything was happening. So much of what was going on just seemed arbitrary–which, admittedly, is realistic, but doesn't lend itself to the type of story I find engaging. Maybe I need to give it another try.
Went to see Isle of Dogs on Sunday.
Firstly the bad stuff; white saviour syndrome and some fairly shoddy cultural representation of Japan that strays into the realm of appropriation. The film is in English and Japanese but I'm given to understand that bilingual viewers will not gain much.
Then the good stuff; This is quite a lush piece of stop-motion animation which in it's genre is fairly innovative. This is underpinned by an immersive soundtrack and the two come together to serve an excellent piece of storytelling that is a host to a hoard of delightful little easter eggs.
I'm not well qualified to judge the offence of the bad stuff (WMCM) and despite noticing it, I really enjoyed the film. I'd still recommend going to see it.
They're certainly a long way from Y'ha-nthlei .
Watched "The Dead Don't Die" on a recommendation from a friend.
This movie baffles me. It's both entirely composed of clichés and really unusual. It has few jokes, but is amazingly funny at times. Its plot structure is shaky at best, and I don't know what the point is or why it was made.
I'm not sure I like it, and I don't think it's a good film, not really. I don't really recommend it. But I am super-glad I watched it, because it's interesting to watch... whatever it is.
Having seen Shadow of the Vampire before seeing Nosferatu myself ... I'd agree that you get more out of the film if you've seen Nosferatu first, there being numerous direct references, but the film can be enjoyed tremendously without having seen it.
Going to have to check that one out. My top two vampire films right now have to be “Let the Right One In” and “Nosferatu”.Both excellent choices. I would also recommend "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night"
"A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" is a strikingly beautiful and original film that deserves better than to be considered "just okay."
I saw Incredibles 2 last night. It was really good. I think I liked it better than the first one.
Different strokes for different folks. I've seen plenty of highly popular and well received movies that were just 'meh' in my opinion.
Have you seen "Shadow of the Vampire"? I saw it in college and it was pretty amazing.
But it does require having seen "Nosferatu" to fully appreciate, hence why it came to my mind.
"A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" is a strikingly beautiful and original film that deserves better than to be considered "just okay."
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It was surprisingly and enjoyably different from the hints I got from the media. The story is nicely stand-alone and doesn't require that you have seen the two previous prime timeline films to understand the plot, the threat and the characters. The ending is both an excellent action set-piece that's true to the Ghostbusters mythos and, also, is surprisingly heart-warming in terms of representing the swansong and conclusion for the original team.
Mckenna Grace is a revelation and it really is as if the spirit of Harold Ramis is guiding every step of her performance.
Overall theme? Family and friendship and how it is built and must be sustained through adversity. "We're ready to believe you", the Ghostbusters famously chorused at the end of their TV advert. This is very much about belief, not just in the supernatural (which is almost tangential to the plot) but in yourselves and in those you love.
Far from the 1984 masterwork in terms of quality but it easily stands up to the quality of Ghostbusters II.
Is this the start of a new phase for the franchise? Well, there is the 'Ghost Corps' logo and the implication that Ghostbusters has survived into the modern day in some form. There are a few other hints of future plot-lines but I'm not 100% sure that the franchise could support more material (even though you know Sony wants to cash in).
I also like that they used a combination of both practical and CG effects work. The movie is worth the ticket price (at least locally) and I'll be purchasing it when it comes out on blu-ray/DVD.
I liked it for being intricate and conceptual.
I watched "Spider-Man: No Way Home". I am profoundly disappointed.
The movie leans HEAVILY into fanservice, the story is only so-so, the action is passable, there's a lot of weak moments in the story and plot holes (and not just incidental nitpicky details, I mean things like motivation of main characters being thrown out of the window).
Also, the movie is borderline incompetent with its pacing. The whole thing has like SIX endings. Come on.
I don't understand the movie being the highest-rated from the Holland trilogy. It's by far the weakest for me. It's a less successful version of Into the Spider-Verse.
I hesitate to call it outright bad, because I was entertained overall, but it's weaker than other Holland movies, doesn't even come CLOSE to the first two Maguire movies, and overall left a sour taste in my mouth.
I'm not sure I'm happy I watched it.
