Title: TIME WARP
Post by: calenlass on 10 Oct 2007, 19:28
No, no, not this (http://www.rockyarchive.org/img/rhpsphotosbw/RHPS-RH18-TimeWarpTransylvaniansL.jpg) Time Warp, or this one (http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/images/cd/large/Time_Warp_CD80106.jpg), or this one (http://www.time-warp.de/e4/e447/index_ger.html), either.

But it's astounding how time is fleeting, and madness takes its toll. This is the thread where we all dress up like it's a really long time ago!

I'll start:

Also we do not care about historical accuracy. It's the intentions that count. And the dressing up. Just Do It, ok?

Aww. I thought this was gonna be a thread where we all look back over picture threads from days of yore and remember how cute we used to be.

Sam, I actually have a fat gold rope at home...

Anyways, here's my effort for the thread! I tried to do a few other pictures all sexy as well, but it just doesn't work for me.

After you post a picture in tails and a tophat

I went to my year 12 formal (what you'd call a "prom" in America) wearing my grandfather's tails. Unfortunately I no longer have them (they were being shared between three grandsons; I have no idea who's in possession of them now).

Things that will help you be convincing!:

HATS like bowlers or fedoras or newsies are good. Cloches would be awesome if you got 'em, ladies.

POLKA-DOTS especially on adorable dresses like Misconception's

VESTS of the three-piece suit variety, especially when paired with ASCOTS

SHOULDER PADS but don't go overboard or you will end up looking like you are from the 80s. Which is ok, I guess, if you meant to do it.

Harry: :(

Also, a few more things that I thought of.

Ladies: peep-toed shoes, shoes with cute little bows, cinched/belted waistbands, bold lipstick.
Dudes: shiny shoes, those funny little armbands they put over dress shirts.

Title: Re: TIME WARP
Post by: Joseph on 11 Oct 2007, 21:21
It wasn't actually exposed.  There was underwear.  But there was a lot of upper thigh.  So I thought best to censor a tad.  Also for humour value.
This was at a talent night performance thingy for the staff at the summer camp/retreat centre sort of place I worked at this summer.  It was just the staff in attendance, and things got rather silly.  Here's a picture of the performance this costume was for.

It should have been nearly pitch black at this point, but the camera flash ruined that.

I'm not really in the mood for this.

In the context that Katie is using: a portion of time in a civilization, culture, or nation characterized by the same prevalent features or conditions, e.g. The Victorian Era, Medieval Period.
or
Period Piece: In the performing arts, a period piece is a work set in a particular era.

I don't think you understand the genre.

When I was half-asleep I realised that this thread could work just as well if it was just one of the regular "themes" in the photo thread.

Then I thought, "But Harry, if you suggest that then you might hurt Katie's feelings!"

Then I thought, "Surely now I have to put my new modly duties before any friendships."

That was when I had the sad realisation that I'd become The Man.

If there is anything I will wear to post in this thread, it will have nothing to do with armbands. I don't know why but maybe this has something to do with it:

Title: Re: TIME WARP
Post by: Mnementh on 20 Oct 2007, 17:07
I think calling Godwin's Law on this would be justified.  The Nazis weren't the only folks to have ever used arm bands.  For example, black armbands were worn to protest the Vietnam War.  There was a Supreme Court case (Tinker v. Des Moines) over it because the Des Moines school district was suspending students who wore them.

Reminds me, I bought a leather jacket at the salvation army a couple weekends passed... It had a painting of a partially-nude Native-American raising a tomahawk into the moon on the back of it. I think he was in a canoe too. It was one of the best jackets ever, despite the fact that it was about 1 size too small for me.

I can't find it today though. I brought it to a friend's house on New Year's Eve and I think I left it there.

(I think I posted one from that third photo shoot on this forum about twoooo years ago.)

Yeah, I did a very brief modeling stint for a vintage store my freshman year of college.  I am, however, about 60 or 70% of the time, wearing vintage anyway.  And then there are the moments that are pretty inexplicable:

On eBay, you could get all three items for under $30 total, not including S&H.  I think this is a cop-out.  If I could fulfill life-long dreams for less than $30, I'd do it.

True, but I'm just not big on the whole thing of wearing clothes that some random person on the other side of the country has sweat in, stunk up and done god knows what in it or to it. I'm also a little on the short side (5'6") so it's hard to find something like a trenchcoat that's a good, comfortable fit. It's also not a "dream," it's just something that I've always thought would be cool.

What the fuck, guys, it's just a drawing. It's a sketch of a dress. People who design clothes or whatever generally don't often get anatomy exactly right; they're just trying to communicate their ideas with as little complication as possible. I mean, shit, have you ever seen the sketches of ice skaters' dresses designers do? They're far worse than this one. My sketches barely look human when I am in a hurry and just trying to jot down ideas.

Personally, I don't get it--I mean, for me they're not even erogenous zones.  But in theory, it makes a little bit of sense for guys not to be attracted to women who do not yet have evidence of secondary sexual characteristics and, thus, sexual maturity; that way they don't waste their time, energy, and valuable sperm on little girls who can't yet birth babies.

That doesn't explain, though, why boobs need to be the size of basketballs.

Yeah, I was thinking about putting something in my post about that. I mean it is an effective reminder, but it's not like you need a freakin' pyrotechnics display in front of a vegetable shop when a wood-frame posterboard sign will do the trick just fine.

my boobs are pretty small but i'm happy with them. i don't think i could ever deal with anything larger than what i already have.

one of my housemates, who is somewhat androgynous, has a bind that presses her boobs down that she wears pretty frequently. i have tried it on a couple of times out of curiosity. having a completely flat chest is really an amazing feeling. it is kind of hard to describe... like this enormous weight has suddenly been removed, or something. she's also told me that women in her family frequently have breast reduction surgery or, in some cases, their breasts removed entirely to reduce their chances of getting breast cancer later in life. it doesn't really faze them at all because to most of them, breasts just aren't that big a deal in the first place.

it's a pretty interesting topic. i guess what i am trying to say is i don't understand the big deal when it comes to huge boobs either.

Title: Re: TIME WARP
Post by: calenlass on 13 Mar 2008, 10:16
Right, so.

You guys, tightlacing takes years, especially for a waist that small, and this is something no one seems to understand. If you do it properly, it is neither uncomfortable nor does it break your ribs. It is body modification, and it is motivated by the same thing that inspires people to get 00-gauge plugs in their ears or full sleeve and back tattoos. The different corset silhouettes determine how much and what kind of changes you will make to your body. Hourglass (http://www.corsetiere.net/Spirella/EG_corset1.jpg) corsets are the best in terms of leaving your insides in place and obtaining the largest difference in the measurements between bust/hip and waist. The Edwardian straight front (or S-curve) (http://www.staylace.com/gallery/gallery07/graphics/dw.jpg) was originally marketed as a medical corset "designed to help women breathe freely", but then no one really thought about what effects it would have on spine and pelvis and it turned out to be a tremendously bad idea. The wasp (http://www.fathom.com/course/21701726/wasp.jpg) corset does compress the floating ribs (and I'm sure that if you try to reduce too quickly or if you do it wrong, it could feasibly break them), but in my own personal opinion in terms of moderate reductions it creates the nicest (http://www.timelinefashion.de/bilder/dior-4.gif) shape (http://digilander.libero.it/mc_maki/Dita_Von_Teese_021.jpg).

I am tempted to embark on a tightlacing venture of my own just to prove a point, except I am not going to walk around in my corsets all summer in georgia and I haven't got any summer ones. If I remember when it is starting to get marginally less oppressively hot, I will work on knocking mine down from 25 to 21 inches just for the hell of it.

Edit: I just found this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/aa/Toleration_of_the_corset1054fig45.png/150px-Toleration_of_the_corset1054fig45.png) as I was GISing hourglass corsets. Clearly whoever drew that has never been party to properly fitted corsets.

OK, here's a not-very-time-warpy picture of me in a dress that is older than me, therefore qualifies by the skin of its non-existant teeth. I'm also wearing sunglasses that remind me of Elton John (and not John Lennon as I originally thought).

And here's a better one, Mrs Bedwin circa Dickensian times.

You can look dangerously, shockingly thin without being anorexic, through the aid of psychotically shaped and applied corsets!

I guess I'm overlooking something, but why would someone want to look like the women in those pictures, aside from a fetish? I believe you when you say that it's not necessarily dangerous, but..well, Jesus, It can't be healthy.

I am going to refrain from saying anything other than that Dita von Teese is a gorgeous (http://www.miniechelon.com/girls/dita_von_teese_10.jpg) lady (http://images.eonline.com/eol_images/The_Hum/20070810/293.vonteese.dita.081007.jpg).

Also that most lots of people (http://www.laceillusions.com/corsets/sophie-ellis-bextor-red-corset.jpg) who wear corsets (http://www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/images/go/gold-natural-silk-sophsticat-corset.jpg) are not fetishists (http://www.elegantlacing.co.uk/catalog/images/Dorothy-Corset.jpg) and are not going for crazy reductions. Plus, some ladies are just tiny naturally, like Gina Lollobrigida (http://www.corsetinformation.com/celebrities_images_xara_files/Photos/lollobrigida-no-corset_edited2.jpg) or Vera-Ellen (http://www.nndb.com/people/093/000107769/vera-ellen-1-sized.jpg) (although it is true she suffered from anorexia as well) or Salma Hayek (http://www.corsetinformation.com/celebrities_images_xara_files/Photos/hayek_edited2.jpg).

I have never bothered going down to 21 inches because I do not think my proportions would look right with a waist that small, because I am pretty curvy as it is. I can get down to just over 22 for my historical dress-up things, but that is just playing.

Corsets that do not greatly alter a woman's appearance are the best. Ones that give you a freakishly tiny waist, etc. scare me. They just look so unnatural and it weirds me out.

But I would like a corset that are like three of the ones Katie posted:
