So, I am going to Otakon assuming a massive clusterfuck shifts my move to the right. I know there's a few of us in the area and was wondering in any one might not want to meet up in Bodymore, Murderland (errr... Baltimore) for lunch or something.
-
I believe the correct way to say it is: Bawlmer, Murlind.
Otakon is the same weekend as the beginning of the Montgomery Country Fair which I usually volunteer at, but if we get some hangouts planned I'd totally work that into my schedule.
-
nah its b-more or ballmore. and its mura-lin. grew up in waldorf.
-
I was assured by someone I met from Baltimore that it's Baltimo'.
-
I was born here and have lived here all my life.
It's Bawlmur, Merlin.
-
I'm going to Otakon! I think our group is driving out to Murril'nd from Ohier sometime on Thursday, we'll be there all day Friday and Saturday, and we'll be leaving sometime on Sunday. And at some point we'll be dressed like the Crazy 88's. So yes, I'm down for meeting for lunch or summat.
-
As someone who has watched a few seasons of Navy CIS, it's Boltimoar'.
-
Great show, but those aren't locals. They pronounce it so the rest of the country can unnerstan' what they're sayin'.
-
Yeah they would have to smooth out the accent for TV. I do love that show though.
-
Yeah, plus the actual NCIS offices are in Anacostia in DC, not Baltimore.
I'm from Maryland, a city about equidistant to DC and Baltimore but considered a DC suburb, and I have to exaggerate pretty hard to actually say Bawlmer.
-
There are NCIS offices concurrent with every major U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Installation. Considering the Navy presence in Maryland, I would not be shocked to find a NCIS office of decent size there. Even the small Marine Corps bases I was on had at least two or three agents on hand.
Indian Head NSWC
National Naval Medical Center
Navy Information Operations Command Maryland
Naval Support Facility Thurmont
NSWC Carderock Division
NAS Patuxent River
United States Naval Academy, Annapolis

you live inside Steve Balmer? :psyduck:
-
Somebody has to...
-
It would explain a lot...
-
So real talk, I am going to aim to go up Saturday for a single day at Otakon... probably. I don't think going up for the weekend would be conducive to my good health and what's left of my sanity. Can everyone interested in meeting up make it that day?
-
I live nearby and will probably even have a car that weekend so I'm up for whatever, just tell me when and where.
-

Heckno! I just said, DC suburb. Baltimore is big and gross and scary and the highways are like 10 levels high over the harbor and ahhhh.
That said, I would brave it for a hangout. I just need a time & place so I can plan my volunteer shift around it.
-
It probably would not be best for me to determine "where"....
-
I'm guessing we want somewhere close enough to the convention center that everyone can get to it, but we also don't want to be too close because every restaurant in the area will be packed with anime nerds in awesome costumes. If everyone is comfortable taking the light rail, we can go somewhere a little further out.
-
Honestly I'd prefer staying closer to the con, but that's because I'm going to it.
-
Understandable. I'll see what I can come up with.
-
Navigating to the con is gonna be hard enough for me. I know nothing of this mystic land of Baltimore. >.>;
-
If my experience of Baltimore is anything to go by, you will get lost. Multiple times. Also, if you get directions from Google Maps, be careful. It will tell you to take either the Inner or Outer Loop of the Beltway, but the signs on the Beltway are instead labeled East/West/North/South, and which direction is which depends on where on the Beltway you are. :psyduck:
-
Oh goodness it is not that complicated. I can navigate.
-
F'real. Also I don't see Google Maps doing that. Also to get to the Inner Harbor area from Delaware, GM won't even have to deal with 695.
-
It's done that to me in the past... I got to the I-70/I-695 interchange, and had to suddenly decide whether the outer loop was north or south...
Oh, and be very careful about turning right on a red light. It's legal, but you'll get a ticket anyway. :psyduck:
-
You have to treat the red light as a stop sign. So you have to stop, look, THEN turn. Assuming there isn't a sign that tells you not to turn right at the red light.
Signs for 695 always say which direction you're taking it, and if you're using Google Maps, it will also tell you the direction you need. There are always mistakes with those sorts of map systems, certainly. But if I can navigate 695, as the mistress of terrible sense of direction, so can anyone else. And it's really just a big circle. If you go the wrong way, you can either get off and get back on the right way, or you can just follow it back around. NBD.
Anyway, were we thinking about getting food, or what? I really don't know where we can go that won't be overrun by otakus.
-
From personal experience, it's kind of fun going to places overrun by nerds. Especially if they're in costume. Especially when it's in a place outside of the convention center. Oh the looks of passersby!
-
Then we might want to pick a spot and meet up, and then we can find wherever will fit our little group. There are fish statues all over the place... maybe we can pick one of those.
-
Got it! Let's meet at the little shaded area across the street from the World Trade Center. There are a couple benches there, but there shouldn't be a ton of people sitting around. Someone can wear a silly hat so we can recognize each other.
The WTC is at 401 E Pratt St, by the way, and you'd be crossing Pratt and sitting in front of the M&T Bank and whatever little cafe is there nowadays.
-
I'm probably going to be in some form of costume or another. If I'm feeling motivated I might be walking around as Pip from Hellsing.
-
I have various silly hats and shirts. And purple pants. I no longer have my Rinoa costume.
-
If it's Saturday, I'll most likely be in a black suit with a mask and bokken.
-
May I recommend the Annabel (http://www.annabelleetavern.com/)Lee (https://www.facebook.com/AnnabelLeeTavern)? IIRC it's within staggering distance of the convention center, and has an excellent beer selection.
What? What else are you going to do at a national mathematics convention?
-
I think our group is driving out to Murril'nd
Team Ohio! I miss you guys.
-
I've actually never been to the Annabel Lee, though I've heard good things.
-
I think our group is driving out to Murril'nd
Team Ohio! I miss you guys.
And I miss Team Boston!
-
Okay people! Who all is coming and when are we meeting?
I've been told that the Renaissance hotel has cheap parking, by the way.
-
I haven't been kept in the loop as much as Michael (for whatever reason I'm not attached on the emails, so he usually forwards me the crucial stuff), so I'm not really sure where we're staying but I'm pretty sure my group is arriving in Baltimore sometime Friday AM and is leaving sometime Sunday (possibly noon). I also know we're staying far away enough from the convention center that we need to take public transport to get there.
I'm not 100% positive that I'll be able to meet up for very long, but I would at least like to stop by and say hi and meet you guys!
-
Can you ask which hotel you'll be in?
-
I apparently have a room at the con hotel. I will now be there all weekend. I gotta call my moving company tomorrow and confirm I am not getting screwed over by them, confirm that I have a room with my new friends from DAS (Delaware Anime Society) and stuff, but looks like I will certainly make this meet up.
-
Awesome. So can we get each other's cell numbers and whatnot? I'm fine with giving mine out, but I would always prefer that you text, though I can handle short phone calls.
-
Yes. Cell phone numbers will happen. I need to remember to do this.
-
Yo, yes, when/where are we making this happen? I will PM my phone number to whoever wants it, but I'm trying to get Saturday sorted out because it's also my 5th wedding anniversary so I feel like maybe I should spend some time with The Boy.
-
I'm thinking early afternoon would be best. And I'll send you my number in a moment.
-
I would like to be at a place somewhere near the con hotel. I decided to wear my Yukata so I'm going to be in gata and walking in those, while comfy, can be a bitch. I am also going to be looking kinda odd. Even for Baltimore on Otakon weekend >.>;
-
Meh, nothing is too odd for anime con weekends.
Er.
Let me rephrase that. Wearing a yukata is pretty much normal compared to what some people wear for anime con weekends.
-
Linds is right. People are used to the insanity. I figured we could meet up in a random spot and then decide where to go for food.
-
I'm not worried about not fitting in. It's that I'll be walking around in clogs :P
-
Bring shoes/flip flops? If you wear the same size as either myself or Boy-I-Like (who will be joining us), we can bring you a pair to wear while we wander around.
-
Eh I'll probably just suffer through. Technically gata are flip flops. Just made of wood XD
Now I just need to decide if I want to bring my bokken or not. Probably not. I will make threatening gestures with my fan instead!
-
I'll have my bokken!
Also I am never prereging ever again. Long line was LONG. And HOT.
Also what's the plan tomorrow? I need to know a time so I can make sure not to plan something during it...
-
Chris and I won't even be awake until noonish, FYI.
-
Okay, so... 1pm? 2pm? Where should we meet that won't be so mobbed you can't find anyone even if you know them?
-
2 sounds better. And I had picked out a shaded area (assuming it all looks the same as I remember it...) and posted about it earlier. I'm thinking a random spot, as opposed to a restaurant or anything, would make things easier.

If that works for everyone?
-
I guess so? I'll call if I get lost.
-
Pics, guys! Don't forget to take some, and post 'em so the rest of us can regret not makin' it...
-
I know the area pretty well so any of you can call me if you get lost. I can always come find you if need be.
-
Photographic proof! We also saw GM but lost him before we remembered to take a picture.

-
GM limped away back to his hotel room for pain killers.
-
It was nice meeting all of you!
-
Three badass chicks
-
It was nice meeting you guys too! Chris says the same even though he was basically silent the whole time.
-
Not gonna lie, it was adorable how he perked up when we mentioned Unicorn.
-
Yeah, you can tell he has a thing for her. So cute.
