Is that a woman on top of that windmill? What windmill? I see no millstones :p
Wind turbine, for the pedantic. Is that a woman on top of that windmill? What windmill? I see no millstones :p
Any chance the girl on the turbine is named Alice? Might need a last name. G-something, maybe.Just to be perverse, I picture Alice Grove as being a place - a grove (woodland, coppice, etc) named after Alice. After all, we've seen woodland in two comics, and a girl in only one...
I'm one of JJ's patreon-patrons, and as far as I recall it will be called "Alice in Sunderland" who is an electrician. (Unless I dreamed this -- going back I can't find the reference.)
I believe the name had to change because it was taken.
Why can't it be both? Alice Grove is a place... named after a woman named Alice Grove.Or maybe the other way around.

We did once. But it was too crowded.Four people is hardly crowded in my books :D Besides, I am sure if you had asked nicely, you could've'd that king-sized bed all to yourselves.
His eyes did what, now? *checks* Well, I'll be. From brown eyes to blue."Don't it make my brown eyes bluuuuuueeeee...."

Oh, wait, I know why his eyes turned blue. The white walkers got him.
Pretty sure it's an anagram for Lager Voice, or possibly Vice Galore
Bilal-kaifa.Oh, wait, I know why his eyes turned blue. The white walkers got him.
Either that, or he's been eating the Spice.
No no no. Read the book. The book!
So now we have an explanation for what the young lady was doing on top of the wind generator. Still don't know what Change-Eyes is up to, though.
Oh, snap!
Prediction: This is a nightmare sequence. The woman died, the man has nightmares in which he tries to save her and fails.Intriguing theory. I could really see this to be the case.
Edit: I actually don't think this accident will be fatal. And I still think it is in fact Alice. If this accident is not fatal, it will be a miracle indeed, assuming it takes place in a universe with the same physical laws as ours. Unless it is a place with significant lower gravity, such as a small planet or a space habitat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O%27Neill_cylinder). But the blue sky suggests it is happening on Earth. Besides, a space habitat (or a pressurized dome on a small planet) would not have much wind, so a wind turbine would be useless.
There is nothing unusual in ropes breaking or other such unlikely mishaps in fiction. That is artistic license. (Of course now it will prove to be an assasination attempt, and I will have made a fool of myself.)I would go for assasination attempt/rope sabotage. If the proper safety procedures are followed, this just shall not happen.
She falls from the same hight as the lowest point of the circle made by the wingtips. That is not that far up. Could be fatal, but not inevitably so.
Don't you know how cartoon physics works? A fall from extreme height will cause no injuries whatsoever as long as somebody catches you at the bottom. Because only the ground can cause rapid, fatal deceleration.Well, Wile E. Coyote (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wile_E._Coyote_and_The_Road_Runner) certainly has had his share of stony ground crashes from high altitude, without being killed so far. And neither the Road Runner nor anybody else has been there to catch him before the crash.
Lands in a bush; problem solved.
Maybe it was sabotage. I am waiting for Changing Eyes to show his superpowers and save her.Huh, an assassination attempt or sabotage hadn't occurred to me, but it seems indeed to be a likely explanation. Although I still think one should examine the rope before using it, if it is indeed attached at the top of the turbine and rolls up automatically while climbing and then again automatically abseils the climber, that's hard to do.
If this accident is not fatal, it will be a miracle indeed, assuming it takes place in a universe with the same physical laws as ours.I know it looks like it will be fatal, but that would be such a sad option from a story-telling perspective. I just have the feeling that if the girl is Alice, she will not die right at the start. I certainly wish she doesn't die; I'm so set on her being the main character.
She could still be the main character even if she is dead, depending on how supernatural Jeph wants to make this.That.... is an EXCELLENT point. Can we have a comic with both her ghost and her zombified corpse as characters?

A Soviet-era fighter pilot ejected from his plane at insanely high altitude -- over 10,000 feet-- and survived. It's possible to fall from tremendous heights and live. It just depends on how you land, and on what. What kind of shape she'd be in, assuming she lived, would be something else altogether.I believe due to the way terminal velocity works, after a certain point it doesn't make that much difference how high you are.
It is (I used to skydive).Car Ego Evil

I'd like to note that I'm in that picture. In the loge (on the left half), so I can't even spot myself, but well, at least I'm in there somewhere.
We probably also not in Kansas.Could be Kansas in another universe. Either the physical laws are different (cartoon physics?), or Alice is not human. But even if she is a milspec grade robot, that impact would cause damage.
I think she's human (or at least humanoid), but has some degree of invulnerability.
Why do you think she's trying to hide anything? If she can't fly, but is invulnerable (or at least considerably more durable than most), she's telling the truth.I think she's human (or at least humanoid), but has some degree of invulnerability.
However she did it, she's trying to hide it, given her 'fell not flew' statement. From that, I'm assuming that her 'fall' looked unnatural in someway to that guy. Anti-gravity coils, maybe? Hanners' robot sister/backup?
Either that. or there's a Saiyan in her bloodline somewhere :-DOr a Kryptonian  (Superman wasn't always able to fly)
Either that. or there's a Saiyan in her bloodline somewhere :-DOr a Kryptonian  (Superman wasn't always able to fly)
Right, that's what I was referring to.Either that. or there's a Saiyan in her bloodline somewhere :-DOr a Kryptonian  (Superman wasn't always able to fly)
Not even always on Earth - that's where "Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" came from.
Because the guy specifically stated 'fly'. He didn't say 'invulnerable' but 'fly'. That suggested that the alleged fall looked wrong somehow.Right, and if she didn't fly but simply fell, then she wasn't hiding anything. If she knew she would be able to land, then she wouldn't fall like a fragile human would, but would adjust herself while falling to land on her feet. That being said...he wasn't looking while she fell, he was cringing and looking away.
I'm not sure that something supernatural is explicitly stated. If she knew that she was somehow invulnerable, or had the power of flight, why would she be wearing a harness in the first place? If she is of average height, then might we assume that she is falling less than 5 meters? Although we do not see the tree line, we immediately assume that the previous panel shows a perfectly orthographic view of the turbine. She might only be falling from the height of a medium height tree when her tether breaks. You can absolutely be unscathed when falling from those heights.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. If so, we might expect a very high-tech, futuristic setting for the comic. But QC is also in the same setting, so what is the difference? Perhaps Jeph just is into futuristic high-tech?
Maybe this is taking place in the Matrix and there was no windmill.
Also, the two people we have seen so far, appear to be in their thirties.I honestly have no idea how you can determine their age from this art style. Not a complaint, but you seem certain about this and I'm wondering how.
He comes back just in time to see Alice's harness cable snap.
She might say yes, we've already seen that she's fallen for him

What would be the correct onomatopoeia [pl] for a 68kg bag of mostly water hitting various solid and semi solid surfaces at speed?
we are definitely not in Kansas anymoreOf course not, we're in Massachusetts :wow:
I don't know. Is she made of wood?
A post apocalyptic setting wouldn't be a surprise at all.
We have already established she can fly!I don't know. Is she made of wood?
Possibly, she can probably float!
What would be the correct onomatopoeia [pl] for a 68kg bag of mostly water hitting various solid and semi solid surfaces at speed? That would be a question for What If (http://what-if.xkcd.com).
The clothes and the wind turbine looks contemporary. But the blue alien and Alice's survival tells us that we are definitely not in Kansas anymore. I would guess that we are in a parallel universe, perhaps a low-tech version of Earth, and Alice has arrived from our world as a kind of foreign aid worker.

Totally a grain silo, metal sided. I grew up around them. No, just something intended to look like a grain silo.
Right. Which makes an above-ground silo the perfect place to hide a super-secret missile, because nobody would ever suspect a thing.
Anyone else reminded of this?

3) They could be reacting more to the outburst itself, than what he's actually saying. We may be getting it translated and the other characters will just be staring with their heads tilted as he tries to communicate verbally what his reason for being there is.
No, if that's what he was saying, it would have sounded like "I am Groot."I misread this as "I am Godot".

And there are/have been at least 16 of him.
Yeah, the XVI bit threw me - if you were speaking, you'd say 'the sixteenth,' unless 'XVI' means something specific besides the number sixteen. It just means his ancestors didn't feel like thinking of a name.
I submit that "Ardent Gemini" is a title and his first name is Cardamom.
This is smelling more and more post-apocalyptic all the time, especially with the "witch" characterization.Yeah, I agree! Maybe it is a future where there is still advanced technology, but also very rural areas where people have gone back to a lifestyle with less technology, especially communication technology.

How does an alien know what a dog is?

Alternately, this is a The Long Earth scenario and Alice is an aid worker from a parallel Earth here to help bootstrap this one to closer to average inter-dimensional technology levels. Read Terry Pratchett and Steven Baxter's books if you need more details.Yes. I just read Long Earth, and quite like this theory. Ardent would have just "stepped" into this version. But why would he claim to be from space?
If this is such a scenario, then the chances are that Argent is human but from a distant parallel where evolution took a few different turns.

One of these days, Superman's going to be too cocky and it'll turn out to be a kryptonite bullet.
Messed up, yes, but also a really cool battle.
Getting a tad off-topic here, aren't we?
Not sure I like it for "Alice Grove"; I was hoping it would be something serious and I liked the start so much...
I'm just waiting for the green haired android lady running the local Coffee Shop to appear.

Wind turbines of that size have ladders on the inside.
And we haven't seen the insides of the buildings yet, those will have electric lights.
Related to the above question, if Alice can survive falls like that without injury or any apparent discomfort or issue, why does she have a climbing harness at all?

@milkmars,I'm afraid that's a terrible defense of Alice Grove, since Alice Grove as I've seen it thus far would be an absolutely *horrendous* Graphic Novel. Why? I'll tell you why!
The thing to remember is that Alice Grove is a graphic novel rather than a daily episodic strip. It will take a lot longer to develop characters and plot and some hooks may not reach payoff for scores of pages.
