Epic reverse chronology is epic. Always loved comics that can pull that off well (see also several Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal comics).

btw, Danielle Corsetto's webcomic Girls With Slingshots is deliciously naughty. Jeph recommended it awhile ago, and I can only agree. She does have a flair for expressive faces, and teasing the censorship lines (which I always enjoy) and also gets webcomic-incestuous, like with Something*Positive's Choo-choo bear (the pink malleable cat seems to be the father of GWS' new kittens...!)

These webcomicists do get around, don't they?  Their world looks like fun, from here.

ESL - my first guess was eat shit, loser...  sorry!  Urban Dictionary to the rescue, again   :-)
Gee, with that and wikipedia, any isolated loner like Marigold or me can keep up.   :-(

And I'm guessing the snot is from the realization of how rediculous what she was doing was... Maybe more self-aware than some give her credit for. ...Or, her sinuses still loosened up from the crying. Whatever.

"deliciously naughty" ?

I only saw the first douzen of strips and it already has a 10 - year old boy who talks all the time about sex.

A TEN YEAR OLD !

I didnt had a clue what sex is until 14, for heavens sake.

And I hated boobs until then, too.
Title: Re: WCT April 19-23
Post by: tomart on 19 Apr 2010, 00:36
(I grew up on a farm; sex was just part of life, you know?)

If I recall correctly, that ten-yr-old boy with the sex-obsession turns out to have a mother who fervently pretends sex doesn't exist, for some rediculous Religious reason. So I think Danielle is suggesting something important about how the drive gets perverted by repression..?  Most of GWS' main characters talk about sex and relationships all the time, Clarice works in a porn shop, and besides the obligatory gay characters, one whole recent plot arc shows us two lesbians' dating adventures. And I find all that refreshingly, deliciously liberating. (Do any of us still read The Family Circus?)
Thank GOD we've advanced to where we can acknowledge reality, at least online...  :-)  Yay Freedoms!

Of course, she and Jeph still have to keep their strips "family-friendly" (whatever the FUCK that means, today!?) or face God-awful pressures, retribution, etc. (Like, we still can't draw a boob... one of the first things a baby sees, but it is deemed VERBOTEN by The Moral Guardians.) Who are we protecting, and from what?
 (/soapbox)

btw, snub, I've always appreciated your sig - True Dat, Bro.

You are aware that the kid in question is a fictional caracter, and that his (not really that) extreme young age is what makes the joke?

Danielle is not advocating that it's OK for children to know all about sex, or that it is appropriate for children to behave that way or for the adults responsible to allow that sort of behavior.

Also, the kid doesn't have very much of a role in later story arcs. You should give GWS another chance.

But in reality, is it really all that outrageous for a 10 year old boy to act like a horn-dog? There was the neigbor kid in Mad Men who got a crush on Betty Draper, and he was portrayed to be 9.

You'd be surprised by how much a 10-11-12 year old knows (or thinks he knows, which is worse) about sex.

Speak for yerself, sonny.  Remember human development (as with anything that has multiple variables) follows a bell curve, and there's a lot of variation.  There will always be individuals out in either extreme.  To be honest, knowing nothing about sex until you were 14 sounds a bit far from the mean in its own right, just in the opposite direction!

Ask any Jr. High (6-7-8th grade, 10 - 14 year olds) teacher - those kids are nothing but a mass of rampaging hormones and (probably as a result) neuroses!

And from a personal standpoint, I know I started early, but that had a lot to do with early maturation - I was 5'6" and 150 lbs in 6th grade, biggest kid in the school, and starting to get hairy and interested in (older) girls.  You can't even begin to understand the level of awkward that entails!

It's even younger for girls... from about 3rd grade to about high school when the other girls started catching up, I was the youngest kid in my grade but, physically, the most developed.  At 12 years old I was mistaken for 18 (seriously).  Add in the hormones that come with puberty, and if I'd had different parents, I could well have been one of those sexually active middle school kids.

Now I teach high school.  One of my students was a freshman who was scared to death to tell her mom that she'd gotten pregnant for the second time (she had her first baby in 7th grade).

quite right, this is an important part of everyone's education and should not be left to chance or animation from Japan to teach people.  Appropriate demonstrations should be carried out in schools at the right ages to ensure that there are no questions as to what is meant.

I am presuming this has something to do with waterborne tyransportation other than by canoe right?

Exactly like that. Bore them out of their skulls over the subject, never let them avoid knowing about any aspect of it, however miniscule, and teen pregnancies will decrease. (I know, I know, but I live in an area where the 'abstinence until marriage' thing is in full swing, pledges, churches, and the whole damned hoop-de-la. We also have the highest per capita teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. and are getting towards tops in various forms of VD. Time to take 'em out a WHOLE NEW DOOR*, I say.)
Can't imagine it working on pillows, really...  you need that skin-to-lip contact.

But it can work on other body parts...
Hence the stains—Marigold tried it repeatedly, with no success.

I wouldn't imagine that Marigold were all that concerned with performing a motorboat as much as receiving a motorboat. The girl is endowed, you know.

Of course, if Mar-bear is harbouring secret lesbian crushes, say on Faye, then mastering the technique could be useful.

Let's just see where that verbal hand grenade explodes.

Sorry, most of the stuff you describe is OK, but a 10 year old boy who talks about sex, thats not cool. He hasnt even a working sex drive yet, for heavens sake.

Um... um.... have you talked to any 10 year olds lately? Trust me, many of them are more familiar with sex than you may think. I mean, it's nice for you that you hated boobs till you were 14, but uh, a lot of pre-pubescent kids masturbate. That's normal. Many of them play sexual exploration games with each other. Also fairly normal.

When I was 14, I was drawing a pin-up girl for fun at an after-school program (nothing scandalous, just a girl in a bathing suit) and this 9 year old came up to me and asked if I could draw him a picture like that, because he liked the girl's boobies. My 9 year old cousin, at his older brother's wedding, was having the time of his life playing around with the bridesmaids (their gowns were fairly low-cut) who thought he was just a cute little boy. Well, that cute little boy ran to tell me about how he got to bury his face in their cleavage when they hugged him, and how he was hoping to touch their butts too. (He used rather more vulgar terms than that.) It happens, dude.

I actually don't even think GwS is naughty at all. It strikes me as a comic that deals with so-called "naughty" topics in extremely tame ways. (I do like it a lot, but compared with S*P, Anders Loves Maria, and many other webcomics out there, it is entirely family-friendly polite.)

It looks like a issue of migrating boobage, since Faye seems to have nearly none (perhaps the plaid pattern obscures it/makes it harder to draw?).  I do like how Marigold saw Angus as all anime'd out.

Regarding motorboating . . . ladies who are well-endowed enough can actually self-motorboat.  It's possible both Marigold and Faye are big enough to do that -- though as pleasure-inducing activities, getting motorboated, self- or otherwise, ain't high up there.  Just sayin'.  You know, if you're already on your way to your bunk.

In this Universe, Dora and Faye are a married couple running a Coffee of Doom Franchise and are incredibly wealthy but down to earth - their only 'Vice' is they own a Slave named Tai.

Marten is in New Zealand managing the Franchise Holdings there with his wife Hannelore

Steve is now working as a security advisor at The White House

Sven got mysteriously run over by a Tour Bus while working for Gina Riversmith

Angus is a local Soap star as well as Marigolds roomie

Jimbo is a well known Author and Tea Totaler

Pintsize, Winslow and Momo successfully sued Microsoft founder Bill Gates and now own the company - Bill's their Manservant

Err, I dont see much migration in boob size. We only see Faye frontally, where even women with big racks dont necessarily show, unless they are really extreme. And Dora's boob size shifted all the time before anyway (as does Fayes and every other womans) in the comic.

I don't believe it took two days for this to register in my brain - finals must be getting close...

Onomatopoeia is when the word sounds like what it is, like "boom", "pop", "mumble" or "roar".

So motorboat, though a very descriptive noun, isn't onomatopoeia.

However, "pfbltblbltfblftblfbltfbtlbt" is.

Possibly. Might explain the offer I got for a cream to make my breasts firmer and fuller.

Near Lurker, that may be the case now, but I know I had the devil's own time finding the spelling two-three years ago, enough so that I stuck it in a textfile where I keep words that are difficult to look up. The key problem is that I, like whoever came up with the misspelling Akronnick is using, had, was that i thought it was o-n-a, not o-n-o (after I put that in, my mac's dictionary yielded it up). I see now that quite a few sites actually reference the misspelling Akronnick employs—in fact, Wikipedia has it set up as an alias to the page for the correct spelling of the word—which tells me many people have had similar problems.

I tried Google's auto-complete and that's what it came up with, but the consensus of the links failed to yield a clearly correct spelling.

That's when I said 'fuck-it' and decided to spell it [puts on sunglasses] onamonapoetically.

Yeaaahhhhh, gotta side with Faye on this one. After all, the part that she enjoys isn't the simple fitting of metal pieces together (or else she may as well have gone into trade metalworking), but the creative and inventive aspect of sculpting.  Take the creativity out of it so that all that's left is rote copy-work, and it may as well be any other menial job.

So does Dora

Wait - about her premiums?

'cause the whole "show the costumers customers" thing is BS, she comissioned a Faye original for the coffeeshop, not a sales opportunity for herself!  I mean, it was a nice bit of syzygy, but it's not Faye's job to crank T-Rex-pressos out, nor was there any agreement between them!

I can see Faye's side in this-making copies of a original piece of art, especially by hand, is less fun that creating the original art in the first place. Plus when you start doing something for money it generally becomes less fun anyway.

However, actually receiving money, especially in the amount Faye was offered, IS fun, so she needs to suck it up and get to work on that copy.

God dammit, the... original cast is back.

The prototype is supposed to be for working out all the bugs in your plans, blueprints, schematics, instructions, etc. (PBSIE). Thereby, you are supposed generate NEW PBSIE which are, if not precise for the new, working prototype, at least more accurate.

Using PBSIE 2.0, the second should be easier, but never without more idea-inducing, modification-leading, design-tweaking activities to keep it interesting for the put-upon artiste.

TL;DR version: Shutup and make the one that'll make you money, idiot!

Didn't Dora "Commission" this one anyway? Faye should already have *that* cash in the bank.

The new art on Penelope looks good, but I think the new glasses would have worked better on Marigold. (I really hate those thick square frames, and Faye had them first anyway.)

Premiums?  It's a small coffee shop. No way does she offer health insurance.

And with only four employees (including herself), I don't think she has to yet.

Besides, health insurance generally isn't like car insurance, where the more you use it the more you have to pay for it. Usually it's a flat rate no matter how much you use it up to a limit (at which point the company either stops covering things or drops you and you're stuck holding the bill).

As an artist myself, I understand where Faye is coming from. I personally hate doing most commissioned work. It is boring and artistically unsatisfying, especially when it is something you have already done once.  The only thing I hate more (in this context at least) is flash art tats, which ties into the whole "done it already" thing.

But, Pen is right. Making a living at what you do is something most people would kill for.

YES.  Also, by doing the commissioned piece, Faye will start to actually make a name for herself as an artist, and will therefore potentially get future commissioned originals.  Plus, unless she was talking out her ass about her sculpture being a prototype, she was already planning to make another one (albeit a ginormous version), sooo . . . yeah.  Please log onto quitcherbitchin.com, Faye.

Whether Pen-a-lope is envious or not, her 'rage, rage against the impracticality of the artist' thing (which she usually aims at Wil), is at the core of her characterization.  Impressive that her yelling has cowed Faye to the point where she doesn't seem to notice Pen-Pen is poking her chest -- I guess the hearing loss issue is more distracting.  Oh, and I now want to see a steel cage match between Penelope and Cosette.

She can be envious AND still have a valid point, you know. And my money's on fear (of failure? of success? of change?!) being the real motivation in Faye's ridiculous whining. I think Azurite is right. Faye would hardly be the first character to hesitate about doing something good due to fear of success.

Dora may have been talking about worker's comp premiums, or QC Massachussets may have an employer mandate for health insurance instead of the individual mandate that they do in our world. Dora's mentioned a health plan before. Or Dora may simply have been kidding.

I agree that Penelope seems to have benefited the most from the new art. And, as always, love the rants. Maybe too much.

And of course Faye will find a way to self-sabotage. As I've said before, it's always two steps forward, one (or more) back with her. With the forward movement she's done with Angus and the espresso machine, I'm actually surprised Faye hasn't spontaneously transported back to the Spanish-American War. And if I had to put up with all the grousing we all know Faye does about working at CoD, I'd be ranting now, too. Burst eardrums might well be the least of it—she'd also have to wipe off the flecks of foam spewing from my mouth.

Edit: Why do I love the panel of Faye quailing before the onslaught so much?

As a friend of a couple of self-proclaimed artists, I can comfortably say that Penelope is grossly simplifying things here. All artists have some sort of emotional connection to the things they create. Creating a duplicate of something would (at least in my case) totally destroy that emotional connection. That's kind of what makes it art, and not something thats just manufactured.

Can anyone here imagine if Da Vinci realized what a masterpiece the Mona Lisa was and decided to set up a studio that did nothing but crank out copies? It would cease to be art.
Title: Re: WCT April 19-23
Post by: ross_teneyck on 21 Apr 2010, 18:11
It's been said already, but nobody said that Faye has to make an exact duplicate of her prototype.  There are any number of ways she could mix it up and still produce a tiny Tyrannosaurus that poops espresso.

And assuming she doesn't want to get locked into making funky coffee machines all her days, she could, you know, actually TALK to this guy who just casually dropped two grand on her, and see what other kinds of pieces he might be willing to pay her for.
Title: Re: WCT April 19-23
Post by: Blackjoker on 21 Apr 2010, 20:14
What I find funny is that Penelope is basically going berserk over a comment Faye made. Nevermind the fact that it seems more rooted in jealousy and nevermind the fact that for someone who seems to pride herself on intellectual pursuits she doesn't seem to understand how art can be so difficult to make and create. Faye might also be (somewhat rightly) worried that she's going to turn into a manufacturing wing for Dora who figures that she can act as an Agent to Faye and get good money due to commissions.

God forbid, you should ask questions!  I teach 20-somethings, and there's something about the hyperconnected terminally clever know it all attitude that just keeps them from asking any questions - it just ain't cool!

I've actually had this conversation with people, usually in my office or in private outside of class;

"Can you explain (xyz)?"

"Sure.  Why didn't you ask about it in class when I went over it and asked if there were any questions?"

And the answers range from "I didn't want to look dumb" (for god sake, you're in school, no one expects you to know it all) to "Everyone else seemed to understand it, and I didn't want to waste class time" (believe me, if it's a waste of class time, I'll let you know, and ask you to meet with me outside of class so I can go over it in more detail).

But what I always say is this; If you didn't understand it, odds are there are several others in the class who didn't either, and would have been thankful that you asked about it!

It's a revelation to most people that you can ask for help, or advice - or in Faye's case, what the customer would be happy with - and actually get an answer!  And I know it didn't used to be this way...

Funniest part of the page to me was the first panel, where Penelope's calling Faye names, and Faye's response? "Dora! Tell Penny to stop being mean to me!" You can almost hear the high-pitched child voice she's using too. Comic gold. The last panel was funny too, but not as much as the first. It was actually kinda sad, knowing that neither Penny NOR Faye should be working in a coffee shop at their ages, but should be on to bigger better things. Or at least "other" things.

Oh well, at least in the QC-verse people make enough from low-end jobs (like coffee shop barista and assistant college librarian) to be able to afford their own apartment. Barely.

Well, if she's balancing the broadsword it might also be that she has it against the ceiling so she has some other aid to keep it steady. But yeah, that is a fairly amusing thing. As for the comic, go Dora. Also for some reason I now can't help but visualize an Espressodactyl that works as a flying coffee vending machine that then gets hijacked by pintsize to do aerial duels with the flying rhoombas.

So, is this consistent with Pennelope's characterization?

We know she's capable of self-discipline, as shown by her commitment to fitness.

Is it just the idea of subservience that's unpalatable to her?

EDIT: Would it be better storytelling or worse if one or more characters pulled themselves out of their ruts? On the one hand it's easier to see the humor in dysfunctional people and somebody has to work in the coffee shop. On the other hand characters facing challenges and having victories and defeats offer a lot more storytelling opportunities (vide Hannelore!), and even though those tend toward drama there should be plenty of humor involved. Marten's band could be as funny as Spinal Tap. Pennelope in an office environment could be like Dilbert, but funny.

Could Pennelope be a freelance editor? That job does exist.

Is Dora in a rut herself? She's turned down an offer to finance a CoD expansion, after all.

Penelope's probably just compartmentalizing.  The exercise has both long and short term payoffs, but she was perfectly happy willing to keep her old job at the bookstore with the grabass boss.  She had to be pressganged into working at CoD!  Although she came back willingly the next day...

And she's able to give good advice and hand out the tough love for the foibles of others (Wil), but can't seem to follow her own advice.  Which isn't all that unusual, really.

Got herself fired (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=725), actually.  For smartassery, which she probably picked up while at CoD the day before!  Without more details it's hard to tell, but it seems to have been tantamount to quitting.

To be a Starbucksish megachain. All she would have needed was to sell her soul. Actually, have we ever heard the story of the founding of CoD? i don't think we have. No, that observation has never been made before. It has not been noted over and over again at all.

I hope the return of Sven means we'll get to see his intern Lydia (it is Lydia, right?) again. Not because I want them to get together--that ain't gonna happen--I just like her feistiness and refusal to tolerate Sven's slips into jerkassery. Don't get me wrong: I like Sven, and his jerkass moments have gotten fewer and farther between, but he still has them, and with his not stopping by at CoD anymore (except that one time) even to see Dora, someone's gotta be there to keep him from relapsing into the guy who literally tossed Marten at one of his exes to distract her because he lacked the cojones to face her himself.

Ok figure two bean grinders, two big coffee-makers and an espresso machine...   Just a quick look on Craigslist shows I can have all of those for about $2,000.

Then you spend another $1,000javascript:void(0); on tables and chairs... and about $500 on basic cups and spoons and saucers.

Another thousand to put down rent and deposit...  and $500 for the permits/inspections.

Then you spend $250 on supplies:   coffee, milk, creamer, whatnot.

Roughly $5,000.    Her parents could have fronted her part of it,  bank-loans cover the rest... hard work at a previous job saving every penny...

Once you are open and have a market share you start reinvesting in the business... buying better machines,  custom cups and saucers,  remodeling... hiring extra workers,  advertising blitz...

I'm basing this partly on my experiences starting my business.   I started off with a yellow Chicom lathe and mill for $1,500 and at this point I'm working for myself,  I reached my goal of becoming  a full-service machine-shop/molding company.

It ain't easy,  coffee shop or machine-shop.    Not everyone has the drive or the moxie to pull it off...  but it's not as expensive as you think.

Well of course we noticed!  But there's not as much to talk about with him (just a moustache) as there is with whatever the fuck is going on with Sven!

Personally, I'm wanting him to write a country/pop song about the 3rd crusade.  It'll be a flop, of course.  And the beginning of a huge downward spiral into depression and self loathing which will force Lydia and Penelope into an interventiion involving a lot of good cop/bad cop yelling and the like.

Or not.

Cool to see Sven and Wil again, despite Sven being all pouty-pants.  I guess the split with Faye sorta has him off his game, but if I remember right, he was going to 'swear off girls' or some such before the whole interlude with her started.  Maybe he's back on track with the whole not-fucking-around-constantly thing, who knows.  I do like his intern, so it would be cool to see her again -- hey, maybe she knows Cosette . . . or Tai . . .

Is it weird that the main thing I want to know from today's strip is whether Wil's mustache is real?

Jumping on the "oblivious to advances by ladyfolk" band wagon. Though there is of course the possibility that they've never actually happened to me, there have been a few instances where I realized days or weeks later that someone may have been hitting on me at a particular event. The one girlfriend I've had, had to ask me out, and when she did I at first thought she was joking (other people were involved and it wasn't a direct question, sue me). When I realized she wasn't I said yes and we got along fine. Why yes, the relationship was ended by her 2 months later, and no I don't really know why (though she's still friendly), why do you ask? Sometimes Asperger's pretty much sucks.

More like 15 K by my estimates. Didn't research enough to give a cost breakdown, but I live in California and it costs about 80 grand to start a restaurant here, minimum, even in a previously occupied space. She has a cafe devoted to one product, but it's still not going to be cheap even in a state with lower overall costs ( I seriously doubt that she found a place that had a bathroom and a basement large enough to be considered for business expansion with rent AND a deposit for only $1000, no matter what the  local economics, and especially not a (guessing) a thriving 2002 Massachusetts town), and it's going to be way more than $5,000. Also, you forgot a few things. Assuming that the place was bare when she moved in but in good condition (clean windows, no holes in the walls, bathroom facilities already there) there's still painting (and the prep work), decorations, the board, the sink and counter, and whatever else I forgot too that she still has to buy. And a fridge, and a- stopping now.

Is it weird that the main thing I want to know from today's strip is whether Wil's mustache is real?

I don't think enough time has passed for Wil to grow a mustache like that, unless, of course, Wil is especially follicly gifted. Or QC universe has MiracleGro for hair. Which would make it utopia indeed for some, if the Bosley/Hair Club/Hair-on-a-Doornob adds and the like are giving the straight tell.

Of course, if there is MiracleGro for hair in the QC-verse, there simply has to be someone out there who's tried to turn him or herself into a Wookie.

Meena comes to mind. I was just reading the sequence where she and Steve meet, and, reading it with foreknowledge, her actions take a slightly different meaning. Of course, that may be more devious than smarmy.

I agree Raven isn't smarmy at all. On the make? Well, she has all these ploys for getting boys, does she not? Even has a makeout address book as I recall. And she played D&D to have those poor guys salivate over her and giver her breaks and advantaged. And…
Y'know, Raven just might be on the make.
