Title: I Like Shitty Music!
Post by: SeanBateman on 30 Jun 2005, 21:52
Stolen from Dumbrella, but applicable here. Even for a bunch of pretentious indie kids, I am willing to bet that we all have bands that are not good that we listen to anyway. For example, I was mucking the horses earlier today(shovelling their shit) and I was rocking the most recent Blink 182 CD. Who else listens to music that they know they maybe shouldn't? And what!

Well I think it's kind of a defense mechanism for me, but I can point out flaws in something and rock it anyway.  Like for example.  I tend to rock things that are immaturely melodramatic, like Nine Inch Nails' The Fragile, Death Cab for Cutie'sTransatlanticism, Deftones' White Pony, and Stars' Set Yourself on Fire.  And I happen to think these are great records.  But I realize they rub others the wrong way because of the over-indulgence of the music.

I can't really think of any albums I /shouldn't/ listen to though.

I listen to a lot of mindless music.  A lot of mediocre black metal (symphonic especially)

A lot of the death metal I listen to is mindless as well.

but I guess other than that I don't know.

I dunno, I listen to things that conventional indie wisdom says "completely suck".  But I don't think they suck.

Check this out:  I think Blink 182 was a good band.  They were completely mainstream, but they had some great goofy pop punk songs.  Eat it.

Here's a good motto:  What's popular (ie: opinion of bands to hate, not the bands themselves) is not always right.

Maybe some of these bands got popular because they WRITE GOOD MUSIC!

EDIT: More bands that DON'T suck:

Dave Matthews Band
Slipknot (self-titled only, everything after blew...... okay, maybe this is stretching it a bit)
fuck, what else....
Phish
Green Day
System Of A Down (not mesmerize though.. wtf happened system?)
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS (what is with all the corgan hate here?)
Tool
Foo Fighters
The Beatles (I hear this a ton)
Good Charol.... Kidding! Kidding...

I really like Snoop Dogg's latest stuff - Drop It Like It's Hot is so cool. The Neptunes rule!

Well, I listen to quite a wide spread of music. A lot of it pretty pretentious, quite a bit of it 'doesn't fit', but I doubt I'll ever stop listening to:

Faux-goth-schlock (Old Marilyn Manson, newish Cradle of Filth, Jack off Jill etc. Mainly because I just think it's fun music)
Real-goth-schlock (Alien Sex Fiend, Killing Miranda, Rain Paint etc. Again, because goth is just a really fun genre)
Old hard/cock rock and hair metal (Europe, Poison, Meatloaf, Motley Crue etc. Look, my mum raised me on this stuff, ok?)
Classic punk and Oi! (The Rotters, The Anti-Nowhere League, Cock Sparrer etc. because I've GOT YOUR NUMBER OI! OI! OI!)
A very few 'modern alt. rock' or w/e bands from my mis-spent youth or that I just like. (System of a Down, The Murderdolls (Seriously, everyone's objections to this band are just because they have Joey Jordison, they're great fun), the odd bit of AFI, and of course Rammstein)

Really, I'm about as true and grim as a hamster in a KISS shirt.

Holy hell.. why am I trying to defend DMB in an indie rock forum?  It'd probably be easier to prove the existence of God.

And Jesus H. Christ, what's with all these religious words I'm using?  I need sleep.

Everyone seems to think I should hate Dire Straits and Fleetwood Mac, but I really, really like them both. I've also got a few Offspring CDs and more than a little Greenday, but I feel thats justified on the basis that Dookie is actaully pretty good, even if it is 'simplistic and immature'. A lot of people have this problem where they take music way, way too seriously, but sod them, they're no fun anyway.

You forget Khar, this is a board full of indie kids to them, Dire Straits is just over produced 80s stadium rock, or something. I'm sure someone will correct me on that.

But yes, awesome. Love Over Gold, quality stuff.

More like "the guys who did 'Money For Nothing,' that video with the terrible computer animation and the drawn-on Day-Glo."

I have a love-hate relationship with Dire Straits.  Also, I like to wonder how Garden State would have been different if Zach Braff had been listening to Mark Knopfler instead of Colin Hay.

In general I like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones even if their music can come off as corny. There is one song by them however called "High School Dance" that is probably one of the lamest songs ever written. It's a song that I really feel bad for liking, I listen to it often in my I-Pod rotation but when I really listen to the lyrics... I cringe.

I also liked/like some stuff from Blink 182.

I don't understand this comment at all, I've heard it a lot but it does not appear to have any logical basis.  They do have a style that is quintessentially theirs, but still have a notorious record for changing musical direction and upsetting their own fans as a result - they even went for a quite complex and confrontational epic studio album (Before These Crowded Streets) almost as if they had to prove the point that they weren't being formulaic.

For the record, I kind of enjoy Crash but I REALLY like:

Under The Table And Dreaming
Before These Crowded Streets
The Lillywhite Sessions

Those albums stand up very well against the vast majority of the others in my collection.  Any studio material after that, I could personally do without.  But I digress.

I agree with most of the bands on Kanno's list, that's a great post.  Although I must add that having heard every Foo Fighters album except for their latest they always struck me as utterly mundane, they never seemed to have much to say.  Their new acoustic stuff has surprised me a bit, though, from what little I've heard.

There's nothing to be ashamed of with power metal. Come on, IT'S THE POOOOOWWWWEERRRR OF THE DRAAAAAAGGON FLAAAAME!  ;)

I don't actively listen to any bands I myself consider shitty, but I listen to plenty of bands that all the cool kids think are shitty. And of course, bands that indie kids would think are great, but my metal brothers in arms would think are crap.

I occasionally listen to Coheed and Cambria, AFI, Thrice, Coldplay or even Green Day. And I don't care what you think.

Oh yeah, and U2 is great even though they are one of the most popular bands in the world.  Don't hate on them just because they are awesome arena rock.

For one, no artist is shitty, someone will always find them to be good. For two, if it sounds good to you, and you like it, it's not shitty! This is more of a "what widely hated band do you guiltily love" or "what do you get ripped on for listening to" thread.

Anyway, that was sort of tangential!

I get crap from the metalheads for listening to stuff like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and 8bit peoples, crap from the indies for listening to extreme metal of any sort (black metal, death, grindcore), crap from the emos for listening to anything besides emo, crap from the ravers for listening to classical like Shostakovich or jazz like Ornette Coleman, and crap from everyone for listening to Bjork. The list goes on, it just depends on who I'm talking to and what bands I mention I like. Damn my eclectic taste in music.

I will back people up on DMB being excellent. I don't understand how it's got such a bad reputation - everyone in the US seems to hate DMB fans (including possibly DMB fans themselves), but seeing as how I've only met about three other Aussies who've heard more than one or two songs by DMB, maybe I'm missing out on that part.

In terms of embarassing bands, I have owned CDs by Blink 182, the Presidents of the USA, Limp Bizkit, etc. And I have enjoyed them all, at some stage of my life. (Yes, I know.)

Also, it's impossible to hate Dire Straits.

Final proof of my shameful love of dodgy music is given by the fact that I am currently in the middle of listening to Natalie Imbruglia's album Left of the Middle from end to end. And I'm damn well singing along.

I love Blink 182. Love them. I'm still in denial over the hiatus thing. Depending on how you look at it they could be considered my favorite band.

Also, everyone at school hates me for loving Green Day, which kinda surprised me because I didn't realise there was so much Green Day hate. God help me if they ever find out I like Blink.

Also, I own Linkin Park CDs. I don't listen to them often anymore, but I'd check it out if they released another album that wasn't just remixes/live versions of songs I already have. Generally, when I hear them, I'm either really into them, or I have to turn them off instantly, I can't tolerate them if I'm not in the right mood. Personally, I think if you manage to ignore the painfully angsty lyrics, the music's actually pretty cool. I like listening to them as I'm going to sleep too, they're kinda soothing.

On top of this, I also like a number of songs by generic poppy girls who go by their full names. (Vanessa Carlton, Diana Anaid, Anna Nalick etc. I'm begining to think generic poppy girls who go by their full names is a genre in it's self).

That's the extent of my shame that I can think of at the moment, but there's probably more.

I love Billy Joel. And Crowded House.

Plus, I have a lovely collection of musical soundtracks (that includes Disney) on my CD rack, Grease, Honk (anyone heard of Honk?), Bugsy Malone, and a ton more. I love musicals.

I also... *takes deep breath* enjoy listening to some Tom Jones songs.

I think you must have to win some kind of prize for the Dawson's Creek OST, but c'mon! Crowded House are pretty ok in a radio-friendly lite-pop kinda way, and New Order are frikkin sweet!

I also must admit that that Kelly Clarkson song (I think we're all talking about the same one...) "Since U Been Gone", despite using txt speak, which is retarded, was poptastic. Also "Toxic" by Britney Spears.

There's not really any excuse for listening to Linkin Park, though.

I, too, will admit a love of Dave Matthews Band. *gets out riot shield* I find it sad so many people dislike them, partially because they know too many idiots who do like them and have beaten others over the head with it. Bleh. I must say, I love the older work much more than the last few albums. But maybe I just haven't listened to them enough. Under the Table and Dreaming will always be one of my favorite albums, ever.
I enjoy musicals a little too much (hey, I'm allowed in my profession!) - Wicked and Avenue Q have been on heavy rotation with me the last few months. Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins are some old faves, although I don't think I listen to them very often any more .... I don't know what else. I know what I like, but I think I'd have to let someone look at my music collection and tell me what they think sucks. ;)

also, i had a girlfriend who was absolutly obsessed with any little piece of excrement he released, so i tried really hard to like him, or at least get used to him, ya know play it in the car or in the background, but i just couldn't do it.

but, hey, if you like 'im, great!

I can understand why a ton of people don't like him, actually ... Which is kind of funny to me. I mean, yes, actually, I think quite a few of their songs sound similar. And, yes, he's pretty arrogant. And I know that lots of my friends hate him mainly because they've all known one or two or too many people who spout "omfgilufthedmbsof*ngmuchi'mchangingmynametonancymatthewshveuheardthenewalbumitssogoodi'mgoingtolistentoitnextdoorreallyloud20timeslatersbye!!!!1" and then they want to kill. With sharp knives. I understand that.

I like their use of different instruments. When I first got into listening, it was some of the most complex music I'd ever heard, which I enjoyed. I like the the lyrics and the way the music make me feel. I like Dave's voice. I have good memories attached to many of the songs. I guess all of that goes a long way.

I understand trying to like or become numb to a band because someone you're dating likes it. I was once forced to listen to lots and lots and lots of the Backstreet Boys. It was not a reason to break up with the boy. But it helped. It helped a lot.

I saw them a few weeks ago at Milton Keynes, and it was so fucking cool. Jimmy Eat World also ruled, though I'd kinda like to see them headline some where smaller at some point. sometimes I listen to the odd coldplay tune.

I keep my Aqua - Aquarius CD in a special place because that album makes me so happy for no reason at all. I'm a Cartoon hero, asshole!

I sometimes like the serious-ish Blink182 songs, like I miss you, and Adam's song. I really liked the Cheshire Cat album. Lots of pretty good stuff there.

I don't listen to her, but I can appreciate Avril Lavigne. It's shclock, but it's not like she's just making up the songs for the purposes of money-making. She's just a lame-ass kid from Ontario who had a terribly uninteresting life prior tohitting it big, and as such, songs like 'skaterboi' are given life. However, 'I'm with you' is a pretty good song.

I love Bjork (though her last album was a bit of an alienator...)
I love moby. Fuck you.
I love Nine Inch Nails. Fuck you and all of your stupid friends.
I love tool. Fuck everyone.

I don't think there's that much of a dislike of tool or nin going around.

Most metalheads hate tool because people call it metal when it's actually art/alt-rock.
Most metalheads, goths, and even early industrial fans hate nin cause they're called industrial metal and aren't really any of those except on a few selected tracks.

Myth.  Most people who don't like Tool lyrically do so because the lyrics are generally soulless.  The real reason most people get tired of Tool is that every song sounds more or less the same and each song is waaaay too long.

No, Trent Reznor is just really hit or miss lyrically.  Some of his songs are really fucking dead on, with good coherent and powerful lyrics.  This is, unfortunately, maybe 3 songs per album.  Everything else is whiny, incoherent, and rambly, and the lyrics just sound like a middle school diary.

Danny Carey isn't the best drummer evar, BUT:

He has an amazing way of setting up song sections with his fills.  He knows the feel of a song better than most drummers out there.  He knows when to be quiet, when to rock out, and when to step it up a notch.  All his fills are fiercely creative, as are his beats.  He's technical when he needs to be, and he doesn't overdo it.

He definitely isn't another prog-rock drummer with a big kit.  He's not the best drummer ever, but he's WAY up there on the list.

Tool is prog for the industro-rock crowd. They're better than most of the industro-rock crowd, and maybe that's no what they meant to be, but that's what they're sold as/have become, and, let's be honest, they're nothing exceptional. I never said their drummer was bad: he's good, but calling him the best drummer in the world translates as: 'I know nothing about music'. Listen to some Jazz drummers. Listen to that dude who's name I have forgotten who does all the drum shit for Arjen Lucassen. Listen to some Arsis or anything with Hellhammer in it, especially Arcturus: Hellhammer smokes almost every other technical drummer in the world.

EDIT: Except Mr. Octopus' Garden. hating that is 100% allowed, and majorly encouraged.

I listen to Christina Aguilera.

This is especially a big deal because I am one of those hard rock girls-- "Argh, the sound of metal grinding against metal!" Hell, it's bad enough I read QC and have  soft spot for indie rock. Like, seriously. I am embarrased to tell my friends that I want to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club or Gomez. Man.

So one day, I am driving in my car, listening to my mp3 player (through the radio adapter) and I guess "Dirrty" came on. My friend, who is more metal than a frikin steel mine, looked at me really funny.

"Sorry," I said, "That must be my niece's."

Yes, because the Beatles have invented music, and there would be no music without them...right.[/sarcasm]  I'm not saying I don't respect them for what they did to the music world, I just hate their music.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to hate the Beatles, through the magical process of "overplaying". Because FUCK ALL, are the Beatles overplayed.

I can't imagine anyone hating the beatles, because there's only ONE song out of their entire discography that I don't like. However, I can pretend to imagine maybe...not liking the early stuff cause it's just standard first-fourth-fifth style chord progressions and typical early 60s britrock. But it's hard not to fall in love with everything after 1967.

And also, when people claim that dude from Tool is the greatest drummer ever, which happens quite a lot. Lots of people can play unusual signatures and have big prog rock drum-kits.

Well, Tool's drummer is indeed very good. I've learned how to play Schism, and believe me, that's not easy. But world's greatest drummer? Nah, no way. The guy is extremely good, but there are other great drummers out there as well.
However, I shall award him the title of "Most Pretentious Drummer", because most people don't actually arrange the drumming of 10 minute song in a way that the number of bass drum kicks is exactly a special number that appears in some mystical text. Or that, when written down, the tabs form a specific pattern that also has some sort of mystical connection.
If you ask me, that's downright stupid and unnecessary, but whatever floats your boat really.

And before people yell at me: I like Tool, I just think that pretentious drumming concept is taking it a bit too far.

As for your last point: I beg to differ. Not everyone can have a big prog-rock drumkit. Take me, for example. I'm a poor student. I can't even afford a double pedal, much less the kit Danny Carrey has.

Band-wise, I do prefer pre-Miss Machine Dillinger Escape Plan though.

Could have something to do with the fact that having a huge drumkit doesn't actually improve how well you play at all.

Most of the worlds best drummers play on pretty averagely sized kits.

OK, about that ludicrous drumset ... how many different sounds can cymbals and bass drums have?  How many different drum sounds does that kit create, and how many are TOTALLY UNNECESSARY?  How many of those drums does he never actually use?

I'd call that a rhetorical and sarcastic non-question, but now I honestly want to know what his justification is for having a monstrosity like that.

I was kidding as well. Personally, I think all these huge kits are ridiculous. I mean, Carey actually uses different toms because they're tuned to different tones. Now, I don't know if any of you have ever tried tuning a tom, but let me tell you something: It's hard and they detune really fast. In short: Nobody really needs that.
Personally, I always prefer a small kit. My ideal kit would only be snare, bass-drum and two toms (and cymbals, of course).

But seriously, it's not as bad, really. I mean, listen to either DEP, Tool, Mars Volta, Slayer, Fantomas or whatever and you're exposed to a level of drumming you will most likely never reach.
Marvel at the awesomeness, then go back to improving your technique, I say.

Also, who or what are Yngwies? Some...crazy indie band, my spidey-sense tells me.

I'm going to go with the popular conception of "suck" here...

I listen to:
the White Stripes (with much joy)
new Green Day
Modest Mouse
Cradle of Filth
The Sex Pistols
and the ultimate "I can't believe I like this crap"...Insane Clown Posse.

Yngwie Malmsteen. Very highly renouned guitarist. I'm not sure what genre you'd classify him in. He's his own deal, pretty much. Widely considered a virtuoso. Plays everything from classical to rock, and if you heard it, you wouldn't believe it was one guy on a guitar.

Bert's fuckin' awesome. They did the impromptu free show at St. Andrew's in the middle of the day with less than five hours' warning. Announced it on the radio, I called in sick to work, and FLEW downtown. The show kicked ass. I've seen a lot of live clips from Leno or Conan or something, and they just weren't very good, but that show was rock solid. And they said it was the LAST show that they were playing anything off of the first CD, because the new one had just been released. So it was really awesome.

Anyway, anyone who bought a CD got to get in first, and got to chill with the band afterward. Bert's just a regular guy. He hung out, joked around, was really friendly. Totally didn't treat me any different even though I was dressed in khaki dockers, a silk button-down shirt, and a brown leather tailored jacket. I felt SO out of place, but I was on my way to work when I heard it on the radio. XD

I listen to Die Kassierer. Those who are from Germany might know the band. Those who don't know the band lead a better life.
Though they do have genius song titles such as "Caulilflower on my dick" or "Dick, Cunt, Ass" or "15 year old girlfriend" (you don't even want to know the lyrics of that one) and of course "I'm masturbating in the headless body of Uwe Seeler" (famous German soccer player). Of course the titles are translated.

Man... my whole music collection probably classifies as shitty bands, lol.

Examples I can think of (ie bands I've taken flak for in the past) include blink-182 (it's just nice, fun, light music), Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, there's probably loads more... somebody mentioned NIN but I think, you know, Trent's an amazing artist and that shouldn't really fall into this kind of category... there's probably loads more but I haven't actually been hit for liking them yet.

Oh, I have both of Avirl Lavigne's albums on MP3... I don't know why, but then, I haven't deleted them yet, either.

I refuse to feel guilty about any music I like. When determining what music I will or will not listen to, I ask myself one question: "Do I like to listen to it?" If I like it, I like it.

Music snobbery is one of my pet peeves. I just don't understand. Aesthetic judgments, including what criteria to judge by, are all subjective. How does any one person get the right to judge the personal taste of another?

Maybe I'm in the wrong place, but I thought the whole point of being "indie" is liking what you like and not what someone else says you should.
 [/rant]

Anyway, on to the music.

ABBA
Ace of Base
Billy Joel
The Cranberries
Eagle Eye Cherry (well, two songs. Save Tonight and When Mermaids Cry)
Enya
Peter, Paul and Mary

Basically I scrolled down my iTunes and looked for stuff I remember having been insulted for. There's probably more that I'd be mocked for, but I'm not very in touch with "the scene" or whatever and don't know what I'm "supposed" to dislike.

I get insulted a lot for what I listen to. Mainly the emo stuff though, unsurprisingly. I'm not ashamed, more disgusted by people's lack of respect for opinion. ANYWAYS,

The Used
My Chemical Romance
Alexisonfire
The Ataris (that last album was saddening for me)
Billy Talent
Nirvana (I was a bit surprised)
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blink 182
Mudvayne
Metallica

I'm not at all surprised by the first two. It really bugs me though how I get crap for liking Alexisonfire just because they have a lot of screaming going on.

I only bug one of my friends about what he listens to, because his favorite bands are Blink 182, Plus 44, and Boxcar Racer. I cannot resist. He wrote a song on guitar and unsurprsingly, it sounds like pre s/t blink.

Looking at those bands, I am not very indie. Oh well. :)

Passed through the filter of shit-awful local emo bands, My Chemical Romance and The Used are why I don't go to local shows anymore.

And also why I moan about people who like crap trend-wh...I mean different music getting way much more fun than me.

I just don't see why you'd listen to The Used when you can lsiten to the Misfits.  And I don't know why you'd listen to My Chemical Romance when razor blades sell for only $1.99 at your local corner store.

sp2, I think we may have covered this topic already. Besides, the Misfits aren't really that good. Why do people make such a huge deal out of them?

Oh yeah, crappy bands I like: Something Corporate (only a couple songs, though) and Fall Out Boy (nurrr! Fall Out Boy, nurrrrrr!)

Ah, staind.  I like maybe 3 songs out of every whiny song they have ever made.
I happen to enjoy those songs very much, though.  So Staind is okay in my book.  Say yes to malcore? :D
Also, Breaking Benjamin is one of my favorites to listen to.  Especially Rain.  Man I have such a soft spot for fluffy songs by rock bands.
What about a perfect circle?  I wouldn't listen to them for a while because of thinking they would be generic punk.  i was very mistaken, they have really interesting sounding songs.  Especially The Fiddle and the Drum which is just four part accopella harmonizing.  Nice.  ~.^
Oh and I like one song by something corperate:   Me and the Moon.  I am a big fan of that song.

How about Simon&Garfunkle?  Queen?  Jewel?  The Cranberries?
I guess I am big on older folky bands, we listen to them in art class all the time.

I have only heard a few Hot Hot Heat songs, but they were kick ass. I shall have to check them out further.

I just listen to what sounds good to me. Sometimes "awful" things can sound "good". MCR has some good and fun melodies IMO. Also, no I don't cut myself. I find that stuff pretty stupid, so razorblades are a no go.

Before or after Danzig left?  If you mean to say the Misfits sucked with Danzig, you clearly hate punk and should go listen to hippie jam bands or something.

But yeah, Korn and Limp Bizkit's older albums have sentimental value, so  blast me all you want, I still like to listen to Break Stuff every once in a while. Also, what's wrong with hippie jam bands?

Wow, you must really hate MCR then.

Good you stopped cutting. That's a horrible thing to do, I stopped my ex girlfriend from it, and she's been better off and happier since. I guess some people just have trouble talking about things after awhile.

The Misfits are mediocre now....but even if you don't enjoy it, Danzig era Misfits is something you should respect. I think it was pretty important. That's just my two cents though.

Arrr!

Modern misfits isn't that bad. Still pretty catchy, but they're basically just stuck in a cliche groove catering to their less elitist fans. Static Age ftw people. Although I always preferred Danzig to the Misfits. Probably just my musical taste, but those first four albums! Perfecto. People accuse them of being 'mere vocal showcases', but I normally slap those people and shout 'IT'S GLENN DANZIG MAN'.

I wish I'd been some big shot producer or something in the early nineties. I would totally have gotten Glenn Danzig, Ronny James Dio, and Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass together (probably the 3 best classic metal vocalists) and made them make pants-wettingly awesome heavy metal. The supergroup even comes complete with a tag line 'Ronny is from Heaven, Glenn is from Hell, and Messiah is wearing a monks habit for some odd reason'.

People who like shitty pop-punk bands like blink-182 and sum41 because they're 'light and fun,' note that that is not an excuse to listen to blink-182 and sum41. Pop-punk is the explosive diarrhea of music: it's everywhere. There are thousands upon thousands of garage and better pop-punk bands, and hundreds and hundreds of them are actually pretty good. "I know it sucks, but I like it," is not as good as "I know it sucks so I'll find something better that I enjoy more." Your musical malaise is not cute, it's ignorant.

i made a thread a long time ago called "jam bands make me happy" and they do. studio albums are great for listening to relaxing music, and live albums are pretty decent background for a nice big smoking session or just hanging out relaxing and talking. for listening to music as the activity though, live albums blow.

Could you name a few examples of hippie jam bands? Because whenever I read "jam bands", I think of The Mars Volta, who are not a bad band.

Mistaking Kings of Leon for a jam band (or even remotely GOOD) is punishable by death.

and The Mars Volta is just prog rock. Not jam band.

Also, every Les Claypool project that is not Primus (and even latter day Primus is pretty jammy) is pretty much a jam band.

They pull off the hippie look and thus have been labeled as a hippie band by the press. Which is why I tried applying the term here. I doubt they jam, but I never even bothered checking them out live, so I can't tell of course.

I could not agree with you more, speaking of autoslave.  I just don't find anything appealing about that band, and my dad and sister were into them for the longest time.  I went from kinda not enjoying them to utter hatred.

I sorta like a perfect circle.  I used to think they were good, but then I went through all their songs and realized I really only liked about 3.  I still enjoy imagine, very simple, which is my bag.  The lyrics I liked because of the point they were making.

well, I like Imagine when it's sung by John Lennon, because then, the song's about something I care about, as opposed to trying to apply the song to a situation that it doesn't really apply to...I enjoy the cover, sure, but I still wanna find Maynard, and beat him to death with a stick while screaming 'who gave you the right, asshead?!' over and over. Jesus.

That said...Humans are only entitled to like 'Passive' and various songs from the first  and second albums. A non-dislike of 'What's going on' is also tolerable, but otherwise, eMotive is the least good album I've ever been glad I didn't spend money on....and I Love APC.

I donno.  I didn't really like Lennon's original (actually, I didn't like most of Lennon's solo stuff, with the exception of Working Class Hero), and the APC cover sounded more...musical, as if it were a song that could stand alone as a song and not be required to be a protest song.  That's just the vibe I got from Lennon's version-Here's an interesting idea, now let's make it into a protest song.  And it sounds like a protest song, as opposed to a song that is protesting something.  Shame, really.

Psst, imagines obviously a protest song.

Protest songs only really make you stop and think 'eh' when you get to something like 'Enter Chaos' by Edge of Sanity, where most people can't really pick out any of the words the singer sings.
