Title: Movember/Novembeard '08
Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 18 Oct 2008, 09:44
So, who's going to be getting in on this this year?

Despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I will fail totally, I'm getting in on the ground floor and I'm totally ready to grow an awful, awful neckbeard next month. My goal is to reach the standard that our always dashing Johnny C has set (and maybe get some of that possibly-family resemblance going).

If I remember from my observations of last year, last day of shaving is on the 31st of October and by that point you are to be clean-shaven. After that point and until the 30th of November you basically touch no blade nor electric cutting instrument to your face. Pictures to document the growth I think are expected as are interesting beard designs when it comes time to remove the fur (if you so choose). Obivously though we don't need pictures from every day. Every week will probably be fine.

If anyone has anything to add or correct me on, this is the place to do it. It's also the place for expressions of interest.

GO GO GO!

If only to improve my ranking (http://legorobotcomics.com/?id=64), I'll give it a go, though I'm not really hairy enough to develop anything more than oddly dispersed tufts.

Do you start with a blank slate on october 31st? I thought it was just 'don't shave in november!'

I will be participating though.

I don't think it's an official rule that you have to be clean-shaven on October 31st, but it makes things more interesting. Plus it is easier to gauge your progess that way as well.

Though if you already have a beard, there is no reason to shave! You are a better man than the rest of us already.

Quite honestly I don't think I can participate. I have very little beard power and my young and naive age of 17.
Title: Re: Movember/Novembeard '08
Post by: 0bsessions on 18 Oct 2008, 10:37
You must shave October 31 or it is not a Novembeard. Part or the exercise is to gauge one's beard growth and getting a head start kind of defeats the purpose. All participants tend to shave October 31, take a picture and then give periodic status updates.

Personally, I won't be participating. After last year, I simply cannot go through the scratchy annoyance that was anything past a week's worth of neckbeard.

If you let a lady tell you that you cannot grow a rad structure of facial hair for one month, you are weeeeeeeak.

(P.S. I am totally willing to participate for all four days of November I will be around to show my totally invisible ginger-growths.)

Not shaving, I've worked too hard and too long for my chin-curtain to just go away. And anyway, the hair on the cheeks is starting to fill in a bit.

I'd participate but I've got a strict school that I've got to go to almost every week day of Novemeber. To compensate, I'll probably just do my own thing in December.

I not shaved in a week, but was gonna because I will need to go to a job interview soon :(

Will still try to do this though, then at the end I will do the whole shaving it off bit by bit to laugh at different styles before leaving a little square moustache and goose-stepping around the house, might annex the kitchen.

It's only really itchy when they are in the stubble stage. Once the beard hair grows out a bit longer you are cleared for good times.

Please Note - The real reason is that I need to shave on occasion for work-related reasons now.

Tommy, you never look like an asshole with scruff. I do not know how you would ever look like an asshole anyway, but maybe that is just me. And I thought you worked with geologists! Why do they care if you don't shave?

If you work at a wanky joint like I do it is considered very bad form to turn up lookin' scruffy and they will probably just send me home until I shave.

A bunch of my friends are doing it for the prostate cancer stuff too. I bet a lot of you with work and stuff, if you get sponsored and tell them what it's for, I bet they'd understand. In fact, a fancy schmancy hotel/bar/etc downtown always does "Bras on Broadway" every year (it is a bra fashion show for raising fundage for breast cancer research) and at the end of Movember they'll have their first ever "Bros on Broadway" as the gala event.

laziness is also the father or one of the worst culinary inventions ever, in-the-bag ramen.Crush the ramen in the bag, open one end, take out the flavor packet and open it, dumping the contents back in the bag, add a little water, and microwave the whole thing, hoping it doesn't spill over. If you're lucky it'll all cook, if you aren't you eat it anyway because you're lazy.

And you're out of Cheetos.

And, after looking out the window plaintively for fourteen minutes, you decide you are too depressed again today to go outside and walk the forty-three metres to the convenience store to buy another bag.

And you don't want to miss Antiques Roadshow because by a strange coincidence one of the appraisers met two women with glassware designed by René Lalique within five minutes of each other (this is a very rare occurrence).

And that is your life.

My friends and I tried doing something like this after a pub bet earlier this year and this has helped me decide that I will in no way, not now, not in the foreseeable future take part in this because every morning I woke up looked in the mirror I died a little inside and by the end of the month it was just a question of weather I used the razor on my facefuzz or my wrists first.

(speaking of name changing, if any friendly admin could capitalize the 'a' in my name, that would be super)

I grew a mo last year for Movember and earned just over $1,000 for prostate cancer and depression awareness and research.

Earlier this year I grew a goatee that I'm too lazy to shave off and grow back so I'll just be supporting other mo's around the office.

but yeah, i mite do this novembeard thing.  even though i'm convinced that i must have had a face transplant with a 6 year old and somehow forgotten about it, because my facial hair growing ability is woefully bad...  i tried to get my mate to join the fun, and his response was "it'd include a moustache right?  chicks don't dig moustaches, and i dig chicks.  so, no."   despite this being a legitimate concern, i'll probably still go for it.

It depends wildly on your genetics and what you mean by "full beard". I'm going to assume you mean facial hair at a length that clearly isn't just stubble and looks okay (i.e. an even covering).

I have friends who can grow such a beard in 3 days. For mine it took 3 weeks to look reasonable and another 3 to thicken up (i.e. the slow growing hairs growing as long as the trimmed fast growing hairs). I also have friends who can't grow a beard at all (mostly Asians and girls).

Dawg, clearly you are one of these Scientists we keep hearing about. I expect you'll soon be teaching my kids about how cavemen didn't hunt stegosauruses for dinner! What the fuck, man? What's next, that whole "we are descended from monkeys" crap?

Beards have absolutely nothing to do with genetics. It is all about how much mojo you have in your nuts. It is about how much of a MAN you are. We judge your manliness based on your ability to will onto your face a more magnificent beard than your competitors in the span of a month.

How much of a man are you?

Man enough to be too lazy to shave my beard off and grow a new one next month.

Man enough to be happy donating to charity for other men to go through the horrible not-stubble/not-beard phase for me.

Man enough not to be worried whether this is considered man enough by anyone else.

Man I am kind of too lazy to take a "before" picture but pretty much in all pictures of me I am clean shaven so it doesn't matter. I shaved before I went out last night and am ready to look like a tool.

Mind you this idea has been so shot down by the lady but I am doing it for the solidarity of my gender as well as to assert my manhood.

So this is what I've been doing for week one.

This is a better view of what I've been doing.

My dad says I am growing face hair faster than he does, so I can't be doing that badly. It probably should be more than this though, my uncle had a beard in like, 8th grade (I swear to god this is no exaggeration.)

I would do this except neck beards are ugly things.  I have to shave every 3 days otherwise I look like someone who thinks an awesome weekend is spent rewriting Linux kernels and going to a cosplay convention dressed as the Tron guy.  As a concession, I won't trim my goatee or sideburns and see where that gets me.

I'm making an attempt!  So I have no camera and got a haircut and trim of everything today but the sideburns I'd been sporting had complete strangers at work frequently calling me Elvis.  They and my hair had gone wild since this May so yeah, six months > just one unless using bizarro world maths and numbers.

URGENT NEWS ATTENTION ATTENZIONE ACHTUNG

It has recently occurred to me that there are two movements in which people are encouraged to change their appearance ostensibly for charitable causes. The first is the Movember that has been discussed in this thread, in which men are encouraged to grow mustaches for research and promotion of "men's health issues." The second is "Shave for a Cure" in which people are encouraged to shave their heads for Cancer research.

Taken on their own these two seemingly unrelated projects appear to be novel, interesting, popular and innovative ways of raising awareness and soliciting funds towards the betterment of mankind. But I am able to read between the lines, and bring to you, the concerned citizen the INDISPUTABLE TRUTH about the HIDDEN LIES and SECRET CONSPIRACY that lies at the heart of these so-called "charity events."

Movember and Shave for a Cure are tools of the Left-Wing Secret Homosexual Lobby Agenda® to turn the entire world Gay and thus bring civilisation and family values as we know it to an end.

AND HERE IS THE PROOF

I'm tempted to just try and go for a managed beard (I'm going to shave the neck, I don't care what the rules are, I'd just look weird with a neckbeard), even though it's already been two weeks.  Would this be considered against the rules/a slight upon the Novembeard tradition?
Title: Re: Movember/Novembeard '08
Post by: sean on 15 Nov 2008, 13:56
I feel like it would be but two of my friends have already done this. Neckbears are also a pretty unholy thing, so I really can't blame a dude for chopping of his neckbeard. If you can bear it you should keep it but if you absolutely cannot I think it is okay.

Hmm. We're not the only ones doing this. Or should I say, they're not. I can't grow facial hair for crap and even if I could, you couldn't see it. Damn gingervitis. But yeah, the entire Drama Club is doing a No Shave November thing. They look rather scraggly.

And also, we do not know who your Drama Club is, but seeing as how they are not the only drama club in the world ever AND we don't know any of them or even who they are by name or reputation, we probably don't care.

Title: Re: Movember/Novembeard '08
Post by: calenlass on 16 Nov 2008, 15:58
Man i was not telling him to fuck off, I was saying I am not sure anyone knows who "the entire Drama Club" is, and since there are lots of drama clubs, potentially more than one per school, like mine, and thousands of colleges and universities and hundreds of thousands of high schools, either of which he could be talking about, or a completely non-scholastic drama club altogether, which we would be even less likely to know about, it is a rather poor generalisation. You know, as opposed to Australia, since I am pretty sure that is pretty big and there is only one.

Mostly I got from the tone of the post that Midnight Umbreon seems to find it novel that, even though we are talking about this on the internet, and we have even mentioned that this happens in real life with people not on the internet, s/he has discovered that people engage in Novembeard activites not on the internet! Crazy!

I was simply musing out loud. I was under the impression that it was something that the Drama Club made up. Silly me for thinking something incredibly stupid like that. I really was thinking there for a while that you who I have never seen in real life would know everyone in the Drama Club at my school.

And yes, in fact, I did miss the fact that this was a charity event.

Mine too. The conditioner I use has kind of a mint scent to it, but it really does help. I still refuse to have a neckbeard, but conditioning my beard practically eliminates itchiness.

Every once in a while I will put conditioner on my hair when it is dry instead of the way they tell you to use it, and then I leave it in for like... well, supposed to be like half an hour but it usually ends up being longer, and then rinse it out. It might help (if you can stand it) if you are suffering from really horrific itching, maybe. Just a thought.

Why do we got to act like dicks to each other for no readily apparent reason, huh? We don't got to jump down each other's throats every time anyone says anything which isn't exactly in line with the forum general consensus. We don't have to carry over grievances from other threads. We don't have to highlight hostility with more hostility. It's just the internet. No need for all these little pissing contests all the goshdarned time. Everyone chill out!

This is after two weeks, and the thickest it's going to get.  Unfortunately I'm not much for solidarity, my mother is demanding I remove it for Thanksgiving with the family.

Man, that's not a good picture of it, it looked twice as thick before I uploaded it.  Damn.

I had someone yesterday tell me to shave. My facial hair isn't that impressive. And I told her "I can't shave, it's Novembeard."
"Whats that"
"Its where you don't shave for the entire month of November"
"So why don't you shave?"
"Because its still November"

I like my scruff but it's so terrible, I look like shaggy. (the scooby doo, not the rapper)

I had this conversation yesterday with someone.

Is what november has given me. I'm not sure how I feel about it. However, this is much better than last year's novembeard.

Staedler, that is a pretty good effort. It's a bit patchy but I think with some more bearding time it could maybe turn out well.
Title: Re: Movember/Novembeard '08

Yeah, I was about to say the same. A bit more time so it's less patchy, and trim it so it's even, and I think it would look great.

Guys if Liz beats you with leg hairs then you are bad at beard.

(I did not participate in Novembeard, so I probably cannot talk. My profile pic is a month or so of beard, though. With trimmings.)

supersheep, your month or so of beard is impressive and neat. I'm jealous.

I want to say that mine looks patchy because of my camera, but actually it's hiding a sizeable patch quite well, so I'm happy. I'm thinking of leaving it on for another week or so just so see where it goes (read: my razor is broken, damnit). I'm glad it (the thing on my neck) has some approval, I've been getting a lot of 'so when are you shaving' lately.

Oh that's with trimming. If I could grow that neat a beard just by sheer force of will I'd be dancing. Also it might be closer to five weeks, I'm not really sure.

That Thor picture pisses me off a little because they are actually two different incarnations of Thor, not a single entity. The former is the Thor of the eighties, who inhabited the body of Eric Masterson, the latter is the original Thor, Donald Blake (Who never had a beard, to the best of my recollection).

Mostly it is this. You do not understand unpleasantness until your mustache is completely plastered to your face and crusty due to a solid soaking in lady liquids.

During actual sex, mostly it is just increased facial sweatiness that is the flaw.
