Title: Favourite Strips
Post by: Tova on 14 May 2020, 23:27
With all the talk about the way Questionable Content has been cruising recently, I felt nostalgic enough to trawl back through the archives and locate a few of my favourite strips. I'm sure I've missed at least a couple, but gere they are in numerical order.

Executioner's Blues (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1805)
The Marten/Dora breakup sent shockwaves through the QC community, but for me, this strip is the one where it hit home. There was something about the sight of Hanners weeping that made it all very real.
(click to show/hide)

Heck of a View (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2160)
The end of a touching storyline with a funny at the end which, rather than just being there to fill the need to end on a laugh, managed to make the ending that much more poignant. A nice thing to have pulled off.
(click to show/hide)

Coffee Talk (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2324)
A turning point for Marten, as well as a defining moment for Claire.
(click to show/hide)

Auf Wiedersehen (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2515)
May has always been a bit of a ratbag, but the fact that Dale found the good heart hiding within speaks volumes for his character.
(click to show/hide)

Disassembly (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3472)
I know that most readers would have been happiest with their Faye/Bubbles ship coming in, but for me, this was the natural destination of Bubbles' introductory character arc and the moment that made me happiest.
(click to show/hide)

That is all. Please share your favourite strips. It'll be interesting to see.

There are many strips of which I like, or found highly amusing. (The "Music+Science=Sexy" (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=126) strip was what actually drew me in to the comic originally.)

But, when it comes right down to it, this is the strip I like the most: 2316 - Crowdsourced (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2316)

New member here, and I have 49 strips saved to disk, meaning they are my favourites. They start at 117, Dora telling Faye there will be precious little of her chastity left, and end at 3200, Skullmaster misspeaking about Skullmaster's dietary requirements. Wow, that's really out of date: I had no idea I was so far behind in my collection. In the last week or so I've been through the lot, again, taking notes, and I find I keep crying most at 3403, when Spookybot assures Bubbles she has people who care about her.

Which are more favourite? The purely funny ones like 951 Pintsize's wacky antics jumping the shark and 1298 Momo's introduction, where she can shoot live eels; or the touching studies of character, like Dora's sad look in 1586 when Hannelore is saying how she wanted to be normal, or at least a normal space princess on Mars?

2159 a happy Hannelore looking down on Earth - 2424 Dora apparently forgetting Mieville - 2490 Emily making beetle fingers - 3472 the gentle smile when Bubbles asks for help taking off her armour - 4032 May hugging Roko in gratitude.

The one where the Faye/Marten tension got resolved completely with a hair-tussle.

Faye and Bubbles's exchange of vows.

3763 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3763)
Bubbles shows she is a master of all forms of combat.
Also, Faye’s and Marten’s reactions…

Generally when there's something that shows how a character has grown in some way.  This falls in with Bubbles' de-armoring, but the first one that really got to me was Hanners cutting loose one cold winter's night...

(click to show/hide)

Something about the look on her face.  "Unbridled Joy" is the term, I think.  Not something she comes by easily, if ever.

The current one is certainly high up on the list, for Bubbles' facial expressions if nothing else.  All the others, though, seem to focus around Hanners and/or Momo, both of whom seem suspiciously absent lately.
Title: Re: Favourite Strips
Post by: Gyrre on 21 Jun 2020, 22:10
Today's (Monday, June 22nd, 2020) is definitely amongst them.

One of the other's I can think of off hand is the one where May finds out Momo considers her to be a friend. Along with Roko's introductory strips, Faye decking Corpsewitch, and Corpsewitch finding out her safety plan for Bubbles is gone.

Oh! Also the one where Elliot is imagining Hanners as a friendship fairy.

If I want a laugh, I always go back to #3525:
(click to show/hide)

It's just so utterly slapstick - Clinton, with a hilarious combination of keen perception and utter social ineptitude manages to wedge his foot firmly in his mouth, while a flustered Bubbles, on the back foot, resorts to low-to-mid-level violence to get her point across...

( Jeph's comments help too  :-D )

Sorry, I know I'm a bit late on this.

For humor, I'm a fan of 2550 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2550 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2550)); however, I think the one that embodies the spirit of QC most effectively is 2554 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2554 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2554)).

Yes. As embellished by Jimbo.

I'm an adult. I'm not doing anything illegal. Privacy is a right. Butt out.
Exactly. And the fact that, in some governments, you might be breaking the law without knowing it. For example, I know there are people that consider the united states america (stet!) to be relatively free, but I read somewhere that there are 10,000 things you could be doing that are illegal (I think that article was about how you shouldn't ever talk to the police, because they'll find something you "confessed" to). If you haven't read and completely understood the entirety of the written laws of the government that might force itself onto you, you can't be sure that you're not breaking it's laws. And then there are governments that outlaw some things that affect only the "perpetrators" (prostitution, drugs, etc) (https://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,34683.0.html).

And then there are governments that outlaw some things that affect only the "perpetrators" (prostitution, drugs, etc).

Well, it's not quite that simple.  For instance, the mis-use of drugs can lead to self-harm which imposes a cost on the society which then picks you up and cares for you (though admittedly some don't do all that much in that regard).

I guess it's time to throw my hat in here, too then.

Brun's introduction arc. From the get-go.[1]
[I've worked retail and food service. I'm not someone who's meant to.]

There's also this one (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3376)[2] where Jeph explains a bit of the post-Singularity A.I. substrate and shows us what it looks like, and sets up Yay, as well as being a key part of the Fighting Ring/Lost Memories arc. My other favorites from this very bingeable arc[3] are The Punch (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3365), ,[url=https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3370]The Dangling Blade], [url=https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3395]Please Be Safe (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3331). So Long And Thanks For All The Fish (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3403), and of course Crows Com Home (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3405). Oh, and Hello Again (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3412).
And here are some of my favorite little snippets from the arc; "I thought I heard a raccoon", 'burn the witch', "Plan C", and "OrbitalRailgun justice", "Please sit down." "That's probably bad." "Whether through malice or incompetence" "No. But I will go on." "I choose to have faith." "[A]n eternity in our care."
Eels (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3353) is another good one

Bar exam is when you are trying to figure out if its a Snickers, Mars, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers or worse yet an Oh Henry, Baby Ruth, or [reference to caddy shack]
Title: Re: Favourite Strips
Post by: Cornelius on 14 Aug 2020, 07:30
The bar exam is when they put a candidate bartender behind the bar, have them properly pour every drink the bar offers, and then blindfold them, to identify each and everyone by taste. If they pass satisfactorily there, the final part is crucial: the candidate has to leave the bar, to join the hiring party at a table. If they manage in an upright position, without clambering over the bar, or crawling underneath it, they have passed the bar, and can be considered for hiring. Certain establishments further require a demonstration of proficiency with attributes crucial to the bar's theme. This may be organised as a competitive event.

That's how I imagine this could have gone down, with Brun.

My chronic inability to know when I'm being messed with springs up once again.

A bar exam is a test taken by a wannabe lawyer to validate them to practice law. Maybe you all know that and are just putting me on? Better safe than sorry, though.

Admittedly, it's not a fantastic pun. It just immediately sprang to mind when I saw that strip.

Sorry to disappoint, but technically, it's both written with a 'ß'.

Given the brewery is called "Mistake Brewery", I do believe JJ wanted to go for the "Mistake Brewery Ball Sweat" variant, although the "Kugel" is not that kind of ball (we call them eggs).

Um, the "standard" character set is Unicode which certainly includes ß!  As does the old Windows CP-1252 character set and the ANSI Latin-1 set long standard for browsers.  Only the prehistoric 7-bit [US] ASCII set doesn't...  The problem really is not whether the character is there, but knowing how to type it!

I use a Windows add-on called WizKey which provides readily remembered key sequences for a large number of characters (and you can add custom ones) - using that I can either type "ctrl-; s" for ß, or hit the control key twice to bring up a menu with all the options on it:

Well, for the record, for some reason according to current german orthography rules, as defined by the Duden staff, the "ß" is discontinued and you're supposed to write "ss" instead all the time now.

Which is sometimes a big problem because for example german "Masse" means "mass" while "Maße" means "measurements". And yes both words are spelled slightly differently.

The umlauts "ÄÖÜäöü" are still in full use though.

Frankly I think the Duden staff is a bit nuts for all these new rules they introduced for no good reason. I mostly just ignore them. And the german keyboard hasnt been changed and still offers "ß" as a direct key just fine.

I'm surprised that you still need an addon for that.  I remember having to hold alt and then type in some number for the accented letters that we had in my Spanish class, and was so relieved when I got my first Mac, and most of the "special" characters were far more intuitive.  The compose key on Linux makes even more sense.

Agreed.  Back in the 1980s, the Norwegian computer company Norsk Data had a word processor (NOTIS-WP) and terminals (a couple of Tandberg models) with a dedicated "supershift" key which enabled the composition of all European diacritics.  WizKey provides the closest to that experience that I have found on Windows - I mean "ctrl-: a" for ä or "ctrl-- o" for ō is hardly arduous.  But WizKey also gives easy access to the whole of Unicode - it's handy for me sometimes to be able to insert Katakana characters pretty simply as well.

The addon looks useful, but you don't need it. Install an international keyboard and type right-alt-s.

Aah.  Interesting.  I haven't really used Windows since the G4 came out, so I'm not very familiar with the modern state of things.

See!
This is what happens when you don't practice a second language for extended periods of time.
My other excuse is that the standard character set doesn't do the German sharp s so people and some translation programs use a double s

Yes, unfortunately, you're right. Any language you don't use degrades within two years to "I can't create a straight sentence anymore", and within five "I only understand half what they're saying".

Technically, the ß is correctly substituted by 'sz', not 'ss'.

Apparently the Germans are dismantling their own language. Masse amd Maße are pronounced differently, Masse has a short a (and ss), while Maße has a longer a. 'ss' and 'ß' were meant to distinguish this spoken difference, at least according to the spelling reform in the early 2000s.

For the record: my native language is German, but the Germans would probably disagree. Austrian German uses some differing vocabulary, but the worst thing - especially for learners - we tend to put stress more towards the end of the word instead of the beginning, and by that change in rhythm and melody, coupled with "non-standard vocabulary" could already throw you off easily, if we didn't have our own dialects/accents.

Anyways, I think we derailed the topic of this thread enough. Either we make a new post for all of this, or you send me a DM.

It would be funny though (at least to me), if we got some relative of Faye, but stuck in perms-redneck language...

But how many characters are that simple?  Also, what you can do varies according to national keyboard choice.  On my UK keyboard, AltGr s does not produce ß, but AltGr and a vowel generates an acute accent á é í ó ú; however, that doesn't work on a US keyboard.  And so on.  Having a uniform way to type all European diacritic characters is good - and I can't conceive why it hasn't been in Windows for the past 25 years!

I'm pretty sure that's the design goal of national keyboards.

Just as a reminder, I did say that the addon looks useful. I was merely responding to the assertion that you could not do it in Windows at all.

And, yes, obviously it varies based on keyboard choice, which is why my instructions included a specific keyboard installation. While I was studying French, I had a French keyboard installed which I would switch to in order to insert accented characters.

A relatively recent one...http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4187 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4187)

Love the pained grimaces throughout, and the one-eyed sidewise glances. Faye's line in the last panel just cracks me up every time I read it.  :-D

Another good Faye/Claire interaction (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2448).

Avoiding double posting: This one (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2588) cracks me up every time.

Probly obvius I do liking the namsake (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3211). and the caracter!
I do liking "filer" or "geust" strips. Also "story resting" eg bembo or the angery bird, but not when boreing ie green backround.

And I just read through the entirety of Brun's intro arc.

BTW, seems I need to correct how I say her name in my brain. 'Broon' (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3222) dropped diacritic confirmed.

one of my favourites https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4050 (https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4050)

It highlights Hannelore being more chill while featuring Winslow and Momo.  It manages to make the AIs both more relatable and less human.

Heh.  I never did sparklers, but I remember when I was interviewing at Earthlink, I told the interviewer that I had walked out of my previous job, along with about half the other employees, and I still got hired.

At this point, the only reason I'd bother giving a two weeks is for the sake of my shift coworkers in the lab. They may be used to being shorthanded[1], but that's still a lot of extra work.

[1]eternally moreso than day shift, thus invalidating that infuriating excuse when they decide tonstand around with their thumbs up their asses.
