Title: Lesser known games you like
Post by: Marneus90 on 19 Dec 2006, 16:41
In reply to the "Great games you just don't care about??" I was thinking, what games do you play that, when you mention them, no-one has any idea what you're on about. Games you think are great, but nobody else likes it or has even heard of it.
One of the most underrated games, in my opinion, is Beyond Good and Evil. Nobody I know plays it but it's great.

I can remember Bridge Construction Set (Pontifex 2) - great tool for every wannabe-designer. Includes various landscape, types of material (iron, steel, hardened steel, bridge lines), 2D and 3D building site view, colour marked construction points exposed to high force/damage, live preview of structure testing... sounds technical but it's very addictive.

And now I'm playing Atomic Cannon - clone of good old Tanks/Scorched Earth game. Many weapons, good graphics, music and special effects, highly configurable (humans/computers, round/deathmatch, difficulty, map size, budget limitations), long hours of fun assured.

there was a great game i played on my old mac called Spaceship Warlock, it was an awesome 3d adventure

then there are games like Life and Death by toolworks, where you played in surgery

one that i always thought a lot of people knew (but apparently i was wrong) was The Journeyman Project series

and my favorite was a simple game called Riddle Of The Maze

Loom is fantastic. It was a gorgeous game for its time and stands up pretty well, I find.

The Laura Bow games were pretty good, too. Basically Detective's Quest, but still really good. Also, that reminds me that I wish more people knew about the game Deja Vu for the NES.

Nethack - It's a D&Desque dungeon crawl. Starring @ as the intrepid hero, it follows his trials and tribulations battling other letters and symbols in an effort to retrieve the long lost ________ of ________.

Good times.

Zombie Nation - A giant decapitated zombie head regurgitates fireballs on an endless stream of tanks, jets, and fighter planes.  Extra credit for being really hard and having a great WTF??? factor.

Earthbound. I love this game to death, but the fact that no sequels have come out in years and years in the U.S. means even I forget about this game every so often.

Jagged Alliance 2. What a great frigging game. An open ended, turn based strategy game where you play a group of mercenaries trying to liberate a country from a fascist queen. Has RPG elements and a great sense of humor.

The Arc The Lad series, original trilogy. Forget the bad-to-just-plain-average PS2 sequels. I bought the Working Designs boxset of the first three Arc games when it came out years ago, and they were/are some of the best strategy RPGs ever. I never finished the second one because it gets downright absurd toward the end in terms of difficulty and how-much-you-can-accomplish, but someday, maybe...The third one was actually my favorite, which is apparently the one nobody else likes.

Earthbound is brill. Also, Seiken Densetsu.

There's lots of (probably not that good) scrollers and platformers I remember from my youth that I normally only ever got to play one fourth of because they were all shareware my dad was too mean to send off for the other episodes. I mean stuff like Hocus Pocus, Crystal Caves, Commander Keen, Starfire and whatnot. From my memories, I'm pretty sure some of the Commander Keen games (4 I think was pretty good) and Hocus Pocus might have actually been genuinely excellent games.

Best unknown game of all time is almost certainly Fragile Allegiance however. Such a fucking good game! It's a space strategy from about 1996, you're a regional manager in charge of asteroid mining for some dodgy as fuck interstellar megacorp. It was so in-depth! Right down to the level of being able to customise every hardpoint on every fucking starfighter you built (which would invariably be engaged in  awesome, borderline psychedelic laser battles with whatever aliens you'd been pissing off the most, whilst missiles were raining down and shooting up left and right. The coolest things, though, were probably the really in-depth background on all the technology and races or whatnot you could read up on on your intelligence computer, and the advanced trading/diplomacy system. There were so many cool points: like when you hired people (asteroid managers, security personnel etc.) you'd get the glossy company file to make your decisions, but you could also buy up information on the black market, which would tell you how good they really were.

You could also buy up genetically engineered viruses and neutron bombs. I think the evillest thing I ever did was to unleash this plague on some aliens without their knowledge...right after I had bought up all the medicine to treat it that was available in the sector. Oh how they died. The really funny thing was, the medicine had no effect on humans! I eventually sold it back to them at vastly inflated prices AND THEN POUNDED THEM WITH MISSILES TILL THEIR LAST BASE WAS JUST A BARREN ROCK POCKMARKED WITH CRATERS AND FLICKERING ELECTRICAL STORMS!!

Such a good game.

My money still is all for Star Control 2.

Google "The Ur-Quan Masters" - freeware version of SC2, full version, etc. It's a fantastic game, even today. I just replayed it about 2 months ago. It's so freaking good.

I second the love for the first two Arc the Lad games (the third was awful, in me opinion).

And on the subject of Working Designs-translated games: Lunar. I played the orgininal Sega CD releases, and they blew away any other RPGs of it's day. The PSX remakes have saved them from total obscurity, but barely. I still hope for an honest to god Lunar 3, but it's just not going to happen...

Also, Soulblazer. That was really more of a game my sister played, but I must admit it does kick ass.

Earthbound was one of the greatest games produced for SNES. Right up there with Chrono Trigger and Metroid.
If you look in the town Foursquare and go to one of the builidings you can't enter a sign next to it says. "Earthbound 2 Production Unit." or something like that. It always got me excited for a sequel, but as you said earlier - nothing to date.

Dunno if this would count as lesser-known (given that it was given a big ad campaign by Nintendo. Well, big for the time) but Treasure's Mischief Makers (Go! Go! Troublemakers in Japan) was one of my favourite games on the N64 by far. Just one of those really quirky 2D games that Treasure always managed to serve up. Any game that comes up with the concept of a math game in an Olympics style setting is on to something special.

Also gotta give a shout to Psyvariar (PS2), kind of an underrated shmup over here, but bleeding well addictive if you got into it.

Does EVE qualify? because next to WoW it's EXTREMELY lesser known. EVE doesn't have TV ads (though it totally should). http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/video/2/RevelationsTrailer.wmv

iIf we're going for more obscure, give Perimeter a try. imagine an RTS where your troops can instantly turn themselves into a different type of troop. From soldier to rocket buggy to flying gunship to artillery platform to tunneling assault vehicle to laser sniper to FLYING laser sniper and more. now have two sides doing that to each other, their troops constantly shifting in search of an edge, or to set off a weakness, and suddenly you know what Perimeter's all about.

Crimsonland is fucking brilliant, but the best Reflexive Arcade game by far is Jets and Guns, which is a side scrolling shooter game that features music by Machinae Supremacy and levels of destruction and mayhem so high they verge on the psychedelic.

I mean, team-based RTSes are awesome to begin with. And the one thing that makes them better? Make it a team of giant freakin' robots!

Earthseige 2
Tribes 2

Earthseige 1 wasn't nearly as good, Earthseige 3 ended up becoming Starsiege, an online computer game and one I just wasn't very good at. These games were also the precursor Tribes series, an online computer game that I was pretty freakin' good at. Tribes 1 was a lot of fun but 2 just blew the damn thing out of the water. Tribes 3, however, suffered the same fate as the third Earthseige game, in my opinion, and just wasn't nearly as good as its predecessors.

Earthseige 2 was an amazingly fun mech game and, while it followed a very linear and not too original storyline, the missions you went on were so psychotic, engrossing, challenging and downright fun that they made you care. Terrific weapons (Plasma Cannon! ELF!) pretty good AI on both enemies and allies and a lot of fun mission based objectives you had to take care.

Tribes 2 is one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in online play. Once you got the hang of the jetpack and once you figured out the maps, you could pull off the most insane stunts. I've never had more fun playing capture the flag than this. Such an immersive game, too. You could destroy the electricity generators in enemy bases, preventing any enemy characters from having anything but the weapons, armor and accessories you spawned with. There were vehicles, there were deployable mines and turrets, you could purchase accessories such as the energy pack (use your jetpack longer), repair pack (repair your generators, turrets, etc), shield packs (take more damage). A team had to communicate well and everybody had to play a role, you couldn't just all storm the other team and expect to accomplish anything. Amazing game.

You'd think Sega would be more protective of their flagship franchise. I guess I'm just used to Nintendo delaying a game for 3 years until they can put a good one together rather than daring to tarnish a character with a clunker.

Except for like, Kirby's Air Ride. But nobody remembers or cares about that game anyway.
Title: Re: Lesser known games you like
Post by: ackblom12 on 29 Dec 2006, 02:20
Kirby's what ride? That game does not exist.

Actually, One thing I have noticed about the console fanbase is the seeming hatred for delays that are longer than a single week on game releases. Maybe it's cause I've been gaming on my PC since i was a wee lad, and I've been with Nintendo for about the same amount of time, but console delays are jack shit to the PC.

Hell, Zelda was on par with the average delay time for PC games.

But yeah. Sonic Team can blow me.

Goemon and Lunar were both great franchises, but they were really niche markets in the US. Kinda like Earthbound. 10 people in the US know what that game is, but I'll be damned if those 10 people don't think it's one of the best franchises ever.

Sanitarium. This is one of the most deranged, twisted and dark games (that was well done I might add... fuck Manhunt) I've ever had the joy of playing.

Old School adventure game where a man travels through his damaged psyche after a car accident. All he knows is that he stole a car, and was on his way to spread some very important news before he crashed. Such a dark and twisted game, especially the circus and the initial town you show up in.

Well.
The Sierra adventure games (the questy ones) are really good games which was popular a decade before everyone else at my age got interest in computer games... so to my generation they are kinda "lesser known".
The same goes to Lucas Arts adventure games... although I wasn't brought up on those so I don't like them as much.

But to name a "contemporary" game that I like and not many know of I would say... hmm... hmm... warning forever! that's a pretty unknown classic (check it out if you like challenging "spaceshipgames")

Super BC Kid on snes.
Out of everyone i know who owned a snes, no one had it. but i loved it.

I also agree with whoever before mentioned Commander Keen and Crystal Caves and HOCUS POCUS! I loved that game.

I remember this game, might've been called "vinyl: amazon warrior" or something like that, but for the life of me i cant find anything about it now.

There was this one called "Rescue Rover" where you had to save this dog, by pushing things around in a sokoban style.
Maybe just that as well "Sokoban", some of the most challenging puzzles you will ever come up against. http://www.pimpernel.com/sokoban/ (http://www.pimpernel.com/sokoban/)

worms world party rocked,

What i wouldnt give for a Space combat sim written with physics like they have in all the novels, ie. realism ... apart from the obvious suckiness of crossing interstellar distances at the speed of light. If anyone knows of such a game, i demand you tell me immediately

Speaking of space combat.

Isn't it always nice in movies and games, when two fleets of space battleships approach each other, that they both seem to have the same idea of what is "up".
Title: Re: Lesser known games you like
Post by: Toeofdoom on 25 Jan 2007, 18:15
Absolutely >.>

I mean, some games will get a few things right, like Eve online got the scale of most things in AUs and stuff, but then your ship is limited to say, 300 m/s rather than actually accelerating realistically. A game with a relativistic space flight engine, with black holes and gravity and stuff would be so cool. :D and wormholes for interstellar flight, and some faster thing like warp is in eve. but no "im gunna crash into a planet and go right through or bounce off" kinda shit.

Knights of Honor is a European RTS game (sort of like the Age of Empires games, but not) that I'm now addicted to. It's a medieval style RTS, like a lot of games in the Age of Empires mold, but with less emphasis on military conquest and more on economics, diplomacy, and backstabbing (you can send spies to infiltrate an enemy court and assassinate their king).

My only complaint is that the AI is a bit off-kilter, and it gets a bit unbalanced at times. For example, in one campaign I played through, an AI-controlled Wales once managed to take over all of Great Britain and France, and move on through Germany and Spain. Frigging WALES.

No offense to the Welsh, but you ain't exactly a military powerhouse.

Another time, while playing as Bohemia (basically the old-school Czech Republic), I took over most of Poland, Hungary, and the Balkans - and the rest of the world applauded me for it. I was confused and proud at the same time.

All in all, a fun game that nobody's ever heard of.

The Bouncer.

one of the launch titles for the PS2, perfect fighting system (when ya got used to it), GREAT characters (i would say that Sora from KH is almost a physical rip of Sion, but Sion is 3X more B.A.). although it was short there was an amazing story compacted into about 2.5 hours...like a movie.

I'm not entirely certain Morrowind counts as "lesser known" considering it was a smashing success for both the X-Box and the PC.

hmm, a franchise that for its time was fairly well known, but nowdays it's hard to find anyone thats even heard the name of the games, is Quest for Glory.

I'm currently playing through them for the *insert impossibly large number* time. Also greatly anticipating when the AGD remake of QFG2, my favorite of the series.

You want a good Bethesda Softworks game?  Elder Scrolls Legends: Battlespire.  Fighting controls suck to no end when you have to use the mouse to both look around and swing your weapon, but the graphics are, like, totally sweet.

Legend of the Dragoon.  One of the GREATEST RPGs ever created, yet highly overlooked since it was released for the PS1 right at the start of the "next generation consoles" thing in 2000.  Good graphics, engrossing, and ABSOLUTELY the best videos and opening scenematic of any game I've ever played.

Or, another awesome game that most people never played- Casper for the PS1.  That game was great!

Ooh, goin' real old school though:  Haunted House on the Atari 2600.  And Zaxxon on the Colecovision.  Or how about Guardian Heroes from the Sega Saturn, or the original Panzer Dragoon?

Come to think of it, I've played, like, WAY too many video games in my life.

Is Shenmue II one of those lesser-known games? I had it for the Xbox.

It was such a great game. Fighting was pretty good, and I liked the story a lot. They left it wide open for a sequel or three, but I don't think there's ever going to be a Shenmue 3.

Well... I have to agree. The second is the best of them. I mean aziza, laffin, the treewoman(can't remember her name), the groucho marx saurus seller, the astrologer. Those caracters is hard to forget. And the story, aaah. Sure the 4 elements is a classic but this game takes it farther than the clich?s...
(oh, and the possibility to see a princess naked and therefore totally losing the ability to become paladin is also a classic :D )

The first Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos was the best game ever. It was way ahead of it's time. Exile. www.spiderwebsoftware.com (I think that's the right link, too lazy to check myself. Try dropping the software.)
I love the Exile series, and when I get around to it, will buy all four games(1, 2, 3 and Blades) full versions. I wish they would convert Avernum IV back to exile(Avernum being the 3d version, which I don't like due to the changes)

Shadow Hearts.

The only RPG I've ever played where some of the enemies attack you by SLAPPING YOU WITH THEIR PENIS.  Or the headless zombie girls whose legs split wide open and they bite you?  Weird, and yet quite fun.

An interesting side note: when I took this game in to GE to trade it in, one of the games I got- without knowing it- turns out to be the game that Shadow Hearts is a pseudo sequel to, Koudelka.  When these guys split from Square, I think they lost their minds and replaced them with fountains of gaming awesomeness.

Shin Megami Tensei:  Nocturne has to be one of the absolute best RPGs ever made, but I've only ever met people who've heard of it on the 'Everything Else -- RPGs' board on Gamefaqs.

Shin Megami Tensei:  Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 rock also.

The series is basically dungeon crawlers with a cool dark atmosphere, and turn based battle system with far more heavy strategy than any other turn based RPGs I've ever seen.  Basically, you get as many 'press turns' per round as characters alive.  But if you attack the enemy's weakness or get a critical hit you get an extra press turn, and if you attack their strength or miss you lose an extra press turn. And the same rules apply to the enemies as apply to you.

Also, you know how in most games, spells that increase or decrease stats are useless because either they don't hit, or they last way too short?  In SMT, those kinds of spells are permanent, and they stack, and enemies are constantly casting them on you.  Status effects are also a major part of the game.

Nocturne has sort of a minimalist plot more like a PC style RPG, except with a slightly more linear sequence of places you're supposed to go to.  Also, there are six different endings that you bring about by allying yourself with the various factions of the game.  There is only one controllable story character, and the rest of the party is made up of demons you recruit from battles.  Digital Devil Saga has a more traditional RPG plot, but it's real dark and creepy.  (Basically, at the start, everyone in the world is transformed into demons who must devour each other to survive, else the hunger will drive them into an animal rage.)  In it there are seven story characters and three in a battle.

Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 are also some of the best RPGs out there, but I think they're a little more well known now.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but I used to have a game for the Mega-Drive (Sega Genesis for the Americans) called Soleil (Crusader of Centy) Was an amazing game, the story was basically you had just turned 14 years old and had to go train at Rafflesia training ground so that you could become a great knight for the land. So you go, but on the way you come across a physchic who gives you the power to speak to animals - but because you can talk to animals you can no longer talk to humans - anyway, you then go on a mission to save the land from some evil person using your animal friends who give you powers. Like the cheetah gives you the power to run really fast, a Lion set your sword on fire - so it did more damage, a penguin to freeze your sword - also to strengthen it.

Jagged Alliance 2. What a great frigging game. An open ended, turn based strategy game where you play a group of mercenaries trying to liberate a country from a fascist queen. Has RPG elements and a great sense of humor.

Great game. Although I don't really get why the game desingers forgot the great multiplayer, which worked almost perfectly in Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games. I still hope that somebody would do unofficial Jagged Alliance 2 multiplayer mod, or otherwise the company would do JA3 (and don't screw it up) with good multiplayer support on lan and/or internet.

In Finland Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) got much less attention that it should have gotten. Probably the best singleplayer game for Xbox and it got good reviews (few popular finnish game-medias gave 98 out of 100), but players just didn't buy it. Maybe too hard or singleplayers just aren't in?

Also Rollercoaster Tycoon (the first one only). Maybe the best simulator, I just love it. Somehow I can play it weeks and months with money-code, so I don't have to worry about money and I just keep design more and more beautiful amusement parks. :)

Then also Golden Sun 1-2 for GBA, way too undervalued.

+ Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. I have it for Xbox, great game.

Well, since there's already a thread for lesser known RPG's, I'll stick outside that genre:

Far and away, best obscure game I've ever played was Tomba for Playstation. You play a pink haired savage boy ina 3D animated 2D sidescroller (Pretty much the same idea as New Super Mario Bros.). It has epic amounts of sidequests and is just ridiculously simple platforming fun. Sadly, I've never been able to track down a copy of the sequel.

I always had a soft spot for Square's non-RPG offerings. Einhander (sp??) was a pretty good 3Dish shooter, while The Bouncer was a pretty good beat-em-up that was hampered by touchy controls and stupid AI.
Title: Re: Lesser known games you like
Post by: Postino on 17 Apr 2007, 09:09
In way of beat'em up I always thought Eihergez (sp?) was pretty good. The fact that you were able to use old school Square characters in the battles was a nice addition. I mean yeah it wasn't the best fighting type game in the world but the integrated dungeon crawler with the fighting game, it was not a bad offering. Speaking of dungeon crawlers does anyone remember Vagrant Story? That was one of my favorite games of all time, simply for the atmosphere and weapon customizing system.

Pretty much anything by Nippon-Ichi.  The first Disgaea went under everyone's radar (except mine!) when it first came out and I pretty much singlehandedly started a craze for the game due to my awesome salesman skills at GameStop when it came out.  One guy told me that he would give me his firstborn child for recommending it.  I personally LOVED Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom was a blast.

I am a huge fan of fighting games, and NO ONE has played Garou: Mark of the Wolves here in the United States but a few dedicated, hardcore fighter enthusiasts or Neo-Geo emulator people.  It is such an absolutely amazing game.  The graphics are so incredibly fluid TO THIS DAY.  It was so ahead of its time.  I am glad they are starting to encorporate Garou characters into the KoF games (King of Fighters XI is due out the end of June, just as an FYI.)

Planescape: Torment is another one that it seems few people have actually played, even people who loved Black Isle.  If you can find this game, do yourself a favor and pick it up.  The story is untouchable.  Literally, it's video game story telling at its absolute finest.

How many people here played Betrayal at Krondor?  That game is actually what got me into reading fantasy novels!  The story was done by Raymond E. Feist and I was a huge fan of his back in the day.  It was brilliant.

It's freeware now.  It was made freeware when the game sequel came out, as an attempt to hype it up.  I just googled for it half-heartedly with no luck, but I'm sure you could find it with a little effort.

It's DOS, though, so you'll need a DOS emulator if you're on XP or Vista.

The only thing Square ever made that went under the gamer radars was Einhander.

But Sunset Riders and Knights of the Round?  That brings back good times.  KotR was pretty rad.

Its a shame too, Einhander is a great game... It was worth trading Saga Frontier 1 for it....

Sunset riders: The best character was the poncho guy...

Anyone heard of Ikaruga? I still call it the most difficult shooter on the planet

Ikaruga was such a great game, but god damn was it hard. I realize that was the point, and it was aimed at old school shoot-em-up fanatics, but it had such tantalizingly cool mechanics I almost wish they'd make the game less memorization heavy.

My favorite game ever? Nostril Hockey. It's not a video game, but the rules are simple.

1) Put a 3x5 card down on the middle of a table. This is the "puck". You may bend up the corners before the game to make it easier.

2) Players lean over each end of the table and attempt to blow the puck off the other end of the table - but they may only blow through their nostrils, and may not touch the puck in any way.

3) At any time, you may punch the other player in the face to forfeit the game; if they punch back, however, the game ends with whoever wins the ensuing fistfight.

4) You win the game if:
        A) You blow the puck over any end of the table besides yours.
        B) You are punched in the face and do not punch back.
        C) You win the ending fistfight.
        D) Your opponent loses.

5) You lose the game if:
        A) Your opponent wins the game, for any of reasons A-C above
        B) You touch the puck.
        C) You manipulate the puck via any method other than blowing through your nostril
        D) You make any Chuck Norris jokes during the game. Chuck Norris is a chump; Bruce Lee could kick his derierre any day. Even dead.
        E) You are Chuck Norris.
        F) You ever kick your opponent. Punching is encouraged in Nostril Hockey; kicking is not.
        G) You high-stick your opponent.
        H) You think about/bisect the bean.

By the way, I know everyone knows of Psychonauts, but did anyone ever play it?
I've got to say it was amazing.  Everyone I've converted says so, but nobody I have met has played it on their own initiative.

I want to buy it very badly, but it is mysteriously absent from every retailer of video games in a surrounding 5-mile radius.  I've played the demo of the PC version however.

Where can i get a copy of this game?

Ehh i didn't bother reading EVERY single post for this one, so somebody might've alrdy mentioned or covered this one, but i think the "Tales of" games from namco are really awesome. Tales of Symphonia and Tales of the Abyss are really fun out of all of em. Although i recommend getting japanese versions of the game with english subtitles, because english dub sounds okay but there are certain parts of the english dub where it doesn't have voice acting where the japanese versions do, making it sound more natural.

Tread Marks. (http://www.ldagames.com/treadmarks/)  Non-stop tank-racing deformable-terrain bizarro-physics deathmatching action in glorious circa-2000 3D.  Try it, you'll like it.

For you Europa Universalis types who want to go way-retro, check out Machiavelli the Prince on The Underdogs.  Sorta like EU meets Dope Wars, with massive name cred.

Dominus (1994)

You are an evil overlord whose kingdom is being invaded by one of eight rival outlying nations : Pigmen, Sea Creatures, Skeleton Warriors, Bird Men, Fire Demons, Magicians, Mauraders, demonic Wraiths
You set traps to slow their march and capture prisoners to interrogate to gain useful information and discover hidden spells
You can mount your dragon chariot to fly down to the battle field yourself to destroy them! But you have to stop them before they enter your castle and destroy you!
You can also form super mutant monsters in the monster mixing room - take a bunch of your different creatures (as well as captured enemies) and then combine them (up to 6 at once) into a unique, super monster that can be unleased on the invading hordes

Since someone mentioned Psygnosis, I'm going to throw G-Police out there.
I loved a lot about that game, especially the style and the fact that it had changing objectives to deal with (not especially common on the PS1).
I never completed it through, due to the fact I could never survive one level where it was impossible to dodge a ton of incoming fire, and the horrible draw distance stemming from trying to make the console do too much.

If they'd just lasted a little longer, a G-Police game for the PS2 would have been awesome.

Well, first off, I haven't played Rez, but it looks amazing, and I want to play it badly.
What about Tales of Phantasia for the SNES? I loved the combat system in that game. It seemed to me to be one of the first games to ever do none turn based combat in RPG's right, if the first at all.
Another is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Has anyone heard of this? It is heavily inspired by Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, and it came out for the Gamecube. I loved the game's story-telling, how there were so many ways to change the game completely, and how the insanity system worked. I loved how it made it look like the tv was malfunctioning, with the volume turning up and such.
Also, a game that's a bit more recent in the same vein, but not as great, while still fun, is Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corner Of The Earth. That also had an insanity system, since it's based off the table-top roleplaying game.

The game was still fun, but have you played Eternal Darkness? It had a fun sanity system that worked.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The game's standout concept, patented by Nintendo (US patent 6,935,954 [1]), is the "sanity meter", a green bar on screen which is depleted under various conditions, generally when the character is seen by an enemy. It can be restored under various conditions, such as performing a "finishing move" on an enemy. As the bar becomes low, various effects occur, reflecting the character's slackening grip on reality. If the bar remains empty, further damage to sanity decreases the player character's health.
One effect which is consistently used is a skewed camera angle accompanied by whispers, cries, and other noises. The lower the sanity meter, the more skewed the camera angle and the louder the sound effects. Fourth-wall breaking effects include simulated displays with messages apparently produced by the TV or the GameCube; this does not affect gameplay unless the player misconstrues them as actual technical malfunctions and turns off or resets his or her system, thereby losing all progress since his or her last save. Though some of these affect the character as hallucinations or muscle control issues, and others break the fourth wall, being aimed at the player directly, all are temporary.

Personally I thought that Ultimate Spiderman for the PS2 was a great game. It had a good combat system, nice chase scenes, and a well thought out story.
It never was honestly a bestseller though.

Startropics was amazing.... freakin' difficult if you didn't have the paper that came with the game... I only found out that you were supposed to have the paper with the game AFTER I went through and tried all 747 combinations starting from 000 on up to unlock the spaceship (aparently something to force people to buy the actual game, instead of buying it from second hand dealers, lol).  also, a lot of the puzzles were really tough in that one, but overall, one of the better games for the NES I ever played.

I never played Startropics 2 though - was it any good?

As a rule (that should probably be added to the forum rules), if it's more than two pages back, you probably should leave it alone unless you're using the search function to find something (not post in it).  No harm done.
