Title: WCDT 2076-2080 (Dec. 12-16, 2011)
Post by: jwhouk on 11 Dec 2011, 06:10
Another week, another WCDT (Weekly Comics Discussion Thread, for those of you with single-digit post counts).

Not too many more comics left this year, including the likely guest comics or filler.

I still say we should come up with a "forum-created guest comic" for Jeph to use at some point...

I was just thinking. The craziest thing Jeph could do to us would be to redo Comic 623 (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=623), but replace Dora with Padma.

/beer commercial

Why not BOTH!?

Technically, you're correct. But this is the butts DISEASE. Because the disease spreads upon contact with a carrier, the avian form is a risk to the psychological well-being of the public. No reports of avian-to-human infection have been confirmed as of today, but an advisory has been issued, and parental guidance is recommended. After all, no cure for the butts disease is known.  Early symptoms include an unexplainable fascination with callipygian art. If you suspect that you have been exposed to the butt disease, you are advised to eat nothing butt rump roast and to turn the other cheek.

The real problems will begin when Randy starts talking repeatedly about butts.  Vulgarity from Yelling Bird is a given, but from the Eternal One?  Be afraid, my friends, be afraid.

(I'll see your nerdery and raise you.)

Actually, the title was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. As you can see in Wikipedia, the title page of the first edition set various parts of this in different sizes, with THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES getting by far the largest.

Why do I get the feeling this is gonna deteriorate into a debate between sorta-old and kinda-old people about the "old times" being much better than "today's youth"...
Inevitably, someone's gonna say "Youth is wasted on the young." and everything will spiral downwards from there.

I wondered about that when you metioned it last week.  I'm not convinced they were at Padmas, it may well have been some other similarly painted building (white brick/stucco, brown shutters/windows).  In particular, the shrubbery's different.

You think Jeph would include a tie-in like that?

If we see poor Marten start hanging around in a dingy pizza bar and having nightmares that involve endless block climbing, I guess we'll know.

Of course, that would fundamentally change the nature of Padma's existence, too...

Having Marten's relationships with Dora and Padma spiral into something like Catherine (http://www.amazon.com/Catherine-Playstation-3/dp/B004P7VGF2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323819294&sr=8-1) would make me laugh.

And it would make the appearance (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1293) of that creepy tapir in Hannelore's mind that much more relevant and foreshadowing!

tender... you are brilliant!

Are the streets of Northampton deserted, or does nobody think it odd when people walk down the street without pants? I distinctly remember Hannelore doing something like this before (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=800).

Would you stop someone in either a daze or a funk walking down the street in their undies?

Yeah, me neither.

Maybe Padma is strong anti-anxiety (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=800) medication.

That would be a nasty, stomp on Marten but good plot twist.  Padma is on the same stuff as Hannelore was when she first appeared.  She stops taking it for whatever reason, although Hanners pointing out the weirdness it caused her seems the obvious path, and suddenly she's not into Marten anymore.

Actually, I get the impression that she HAS caused him to leave the house sans pants. Multiple times. She certainly doesn't seem to regard it as unusual. :P
And woooow, Dora has a haircut! A really nice one, too!

Actually, for a guy who's supposedly hopeless with the ladies (it was one of about four regular themes of the first 500 strips), all the available evidence suggests that Marten managed to find a new partner before Dora did.

:psyduck:

Granted, this might have been because Dora tried to move on too quickly (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1963), but still...

Dora is not going to bite Marten's head off  because he is kissing some other girl now. Does this mean that if he were not kissing some other girl, she would indeed bite his head off?

Of course, if they were praying mantises, that would now be Padma's responsibility and none of Dora's damn business. (NB: They are not praying mantises)

Dora doesn't appear to know that Marten is now with Padma specifically - is this significant?  I can't recall if she has met Padma, but she must surely know who she is given the working relationship between the shops.  Perhaps knowing wouldn't affect her; but in any case there's a nice parallel that they have both dated people from tSB.

For comic #2078...

1. Looks like Dora and Marten are back to their "standard" wardrobes and colors.  Well, sans pants for Marten, of course.

2. Dora's hair-style has not changed from last, it looks different because the lock of hair across her face from before is brushed across the forehead.  Personally, I much prefer the lock of hair across Dora's face, but that is because I am a hopeless romantic (aka "sucker" ) for such a look on a pretty girl.

3. The continuing pantsless punchline gave me a good laugh.  That Dora silently pointed made the punchline better than having to state it.

4. It definitely will be some good drama and comedy when Dora and Padma meet together to discuss their own experiences with their nice indie boy.  It will also be interesting to see what Dora has to say to Marten about the counting-down timer on Padma's eventual departure.

Incoming memo from the Overanalysis Department...

In strip 1928, Padma seems to be reacting violently to Jim's ham-handed pickup line -- why the heck would she?  Unless JIM AND PADMA used to be a couple (omg, the boss dating an employee).  So maybe that sets up yet another weird parallel: there might be Renee/Faye and Dora/Padma, but maybe there's a Marten/Jim parallel going on as well.

They can ride up.  It doesn't get much worse than mildly uncomfortable when walking.

So, suddenly all the Dora-haters probably don't anymore, right?  I feel like Dora's diplomacy in this strip should be the nail in the coffin for those who preemptively blamed her for future drama.

Dang.

I'm confused.  There exists comfortable underwear for men to wear with tight pants?  Briefs bunch like no tomorrow in all occasions ever, and are quite confining in tight pants if you have some size on ya.
And you can't do much other than wear skinny jeans when the lady-types insist you look good in them (even if we all know it's a filthy lie, because men's bodies aren't symmetrical and symmetry matters consarnit, but it's a lie they seem to agree on so dive into the delusion I suppose).
And commando isn't for the faint of heart.
Perhaps you are thinking of the the legendary "boxer-briefs"?  Just a legend, I promise you.

Uh, also, I like Dora's look in this strip.

Panel 4 Dora just looks a little crosseyed to me.

Where is Marten keeping his apartment key? Looks like he'll have to wait for Faye with her key, or maybe Hannelore with whatever she uses to breach the defenses of Castle Reedaker.

Pintsize could let him in.  After all he has some way of getting in and out of the apartment, even though he doesn't seem tall enough to reach the doorknob.

Hope Marten remembered to turn him back on.

Why would you willingly put up with even "mildly uncomfortable while walking"?

Just wear something that fits  instead...

Some people prefer style to comfort.

Yep, just ask the women who wear high-heeled shoes, especially those stiletto heels. Those do not look even a little comfortable to me.

But I'm a guy who's never worn high heels, so I could be wrong about that...

Great comic today. Dora's lookin' verra sexay, IMO. However, I have one quick comment.

"Is she nice?"

I'm not blaming Jeph for this, because he is spot on. I've heard this myself, and maybe it's because I have no small talk, but WHY WOULD ANYONE ASK THIS?

"No, she's a raging bitch, but I'm sleeping with her anyway, because she's so incredibly hot." Is this the answer expected by the questioner?

Maybe the somewhat more neutral, "Well, she's nice to ME." Or you can do the Marten-style awkward shit. But really, would it not be more to the point for the questioner to ask, "So, what's she like?" A much more open-ended question which can lead the conversation in several directions.

Sorry for the rant, but from personal experience this has always struck me as a very odd question in these circumstances.

Thought-provoking.

I hear it as being like "Did you enjoy your trip?", something said with the hope that the answer is "yes".

You're right that open-ended questions make for better conversation. I had to be taught that explicitly.

Sorry for the rant, but from personal experience this has always struck me as a very odd question in these circumstances.

It's the first thing I thought the second time I read the strip too.  I'm pretty sure that its intended effect is for the answerer to say "yes" and then describe how the person is nice so that the questioner can show support.  I.e., Dora's has non-maliciously trapped Marten into saying "yes" so that she can show him that she's happy for him (so that things aren't awkward).  Many altruistic people also like to let people gush about good things that happen to them, so they can dwell on 'em more.

But it's still an odd, awkward question.  Because if their relationship was different--and most ex relationships are--such a question could also be passive-aggressive (making him think about how happy he isn't making Dora), stalkerish (finding out what he likes about Padma to sabotage the relationship), or self-flagellating (she wants a reason to feel as bad as she does or worse).  I don't think it is for Dora, of course, she seems chill enough.  I wouldn't entirely rule out the third for Dora--seeing her break down in her bedroom later on--but gosh I hope not.

In fact, she hasn't let him before. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1743) Pintsize or maybe even Hanners is probably around any way.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not expecting Marten to go through the same mopey hell that he went through last time.
First, because his time with Padma will be significantly shorter than his time with Dora, so his emotional investment is less (or should be).
Second, in the same way that Dora has been allowed to show maturity in the recent break-up with Marten, I would think that Marten would be allowed to show some similar emotional growth.
Sure, someone like Faye or Steve should have "that" conversation about his behavior last time so that he can process the information before hand. And it's arguable that because Dora has had so many bad break-ups in her past that she's learned to deal with it more quickly. However, I'd really like to see Marten handle this well and defy expectations. It may not add much drama or humor to the strip if he does, but then not acting as people expect can be funny in it's own way.

Or maybe someone will initiate a per-emptive strike by having his mother come to town for a visit. Mom's visits are always fun.

1. Sympathy. She's trying to show empathy with Marten over the situation, even if she already knew Padma was booking for Cali in a few weeks.

2. Re: Earlier Strip - I actually don't like how they looked in that one. Raven looked a bit odd in a few of the frames (which I think I pointed out in that week's WCDT).

3. Raven's "kanji" tattoo is just being covered up by that cute top of hers. (Pink with black lace - yep, that's a Raven blouse, all right.)

I fully expect the ultimate result of the Padma/Marten hookup and breakup will be the proverbial slap-in-the-face that Marten needs to wake up.

E.g., Padma saying something like "You wanna be with me? You?  Dude, you have no prospects. You're floating through life. And that's just not attractive for the long term. It was fun. See ya."

The basic rule is to use "in-" ("im-", "il-", "ir-") with words of Latin and (rarely) Greek origin, and to use "un-" with ... um, English words of any origin ... including Latin and Greek ... um ...

A rule of thumb: The less common (more "learned") words of classical origin are the ones with which to use "in-" for negation.

Never mind that there is an unrelated[sic!] Latin "in-"/"im-"/"il-"/"ir-" ... it wouldn't be English without complications.  8-)

The rule, such as it is, is not maintained consistently.  English speakers quite often get the choice wrong (if merely using the less common need be considered wrong at all).  In a few cases, the use of un- and in- distinguishes two different meanings (there's an obvious example, which I can't recall - I'll add it here if it pops into my mind).

[edit] The example I was trying for is in fact different: uninterested and disinterested - so that claim may be wrong.

"unto" and "into"?

<grin,duck,run>

Edit: Seriously though, examples like "informed" vs "unformed", "insure" vs "unsure", or "invoiced" vs "unvoiced" are using the other Latin prefix "in-", not the negating one.

Others, like "insubstantial" vs "unsubstantial" seem synonymous enough – just that one was negated by Romance speakers before export to English, while the other was negated by English speakers after import from Romance languages.

But yeah, I should not be surprised if there turns out to be an example of real difference.  English is a living language, and a free one – it cares not for our rules.

But those aren't prefixes.  Or rather, un is not in that case, but in- is a different (also Latin) prefix from in- meaning not, in this case the prefix being the same as the one in inflame or inter (bury).

@snubnose: Just because it's harsh doesn't mean it can't be helpful and positive.

@Soulsynger: you know, that's a damn good point. Faye has been much more cavalier about the possibility of working on her art/sculpture (the strip where she's balancing a sword on her nose comes to mind). On the other hand, you can argue that Faye does at least have the possibility of a wealthy art gallery owner interested in her work.

Okay, guys, I am calling it now.

Marten is gonna die. How, you ask? Well. The story between him and Padma doesn't work out. At the age of forty or so, he gets some nanoplastic surgery mubmojumbo, travels back in time and hooks up with Faye's mom. He lives a happy live close to Faye and then eventually decides that he has lived a happy live and can "leave" now. He shoots himself, forgetting/not realizing that he would scar Faye for life; his corpse is taken away. Then Space Wizards appear and resurrect him.

Gosh, I am so glad Jeph is the one writing the story.

OK, so first time poster, long timer lurker, yadda yadda...

So yeah, previous discussions/knowledge not withstanding, Dora is probably realizing just how hard Marten has fallen for Padma, and senses the potential of much turmoil on the horizon. She would, after all, be one of the best at reading his non-verbals and tone. Dora could be remembering mopey Marten from their breakup, or even further back to Marten's original cross country shenanigans and why he moved East in the first place.

So if she is, does she step in and try to "save" him as a friend? Does she organize the CoD crew for wacky hijinx in order to intervene? Does she sit back and wait to be the friend/shoulder to mope on when Padma does leave? Etc., Etc..

Lots of different ways it could go, if Dora gets more involved in the ongoing plot. Or not, if it's just a one-off.

You know, you raise an interesting point. However, I believe Dora in her current state would be unlikely to intervene. For one, she probably isn't sure how to handle the situation, given that Marten was likely the boyfriend she was emotionally attached to the most, ever (I am speculating here a bit, but considering all her previous boyfriends were jackasses, I would say that's an educated guess.) On the other hand, she might not want to intervene, lest Marten thinks that she is meddling in his stuff again (as a parallel to her controlling behavior which eventually led to their breakup.)

Actually, that could be an interesting scenario:

He starts thinking about returning to Cali - to the point where he's buying the plane tickets.

Dora angrily tells him he's a fool to go, but that if it makes him happy, pursue it.

And he has an epiphany as he's at the airport.

He disappears from the strip for a while. Everyone assumes he's gone to California.

For some reason, Raven's "Oh noes!" is my favourite moment of today's comic. It just seems so appropriate for her character to say that!

(Its just imaginary harshness)
... and at least get a revelation from it. Realizing would be the first step. A decline in attractiveness when you have nothing going on in your life is a very real thing.
... on the other hand, Faye and some other cast members have equally little going on in their life for the long run but we never complain about them. I wonder why.

Marten has more openly complained about where he is at with his life. Faye and the others might complain here and there, but for the most part, they seem pretty content with how things are. I agree that it might seem like a bit of a double standard, but MARTEN is the one who seems to mope about it more, so Marten is the one that we focus on in this area.

Plus, if you think about it, most of the characters do have a lot going on. Faye is still in therapy and working on coming to terms with what has happened in her life. I would think that this is her priority right now-- not advancing her career or exploring her art, etc. Dora owns a business. Hannelore is working two jobs-- one is more for fun/personal reasons, and she seems to get out fairly often, for someone with extreme phobias. Tai works at the library, too, but she is a student at that college, and she works on DJ stuff in her spare time. Raven is a student. Etc, etc. Marten works at the college library of a school he is not a part of. We do not see him regularly taking part in hobbies. (It would be nice if he could mention his music more often. Or music in general, which did seem to be more of a hobby for him in the beginning of the comic.) And he has been down a lot lately. Soooo. It's really easy to focus on him.

I'm sorry if I'm not making sense. It's bedtime. ^^;

Fascinating question. Dora somehow feels like just the type to meddle, but are there any cases where she has actually done so?

Maybe Raven doesn't do ass-grabs on people in relationships?

I agree that Dora kind of feels like a meddler/manipulater type, but she never seems to do anything like that. She also feels a lot less stable than her actions (outward appearance?) show.

I wonder what/when/if a side like that will ever show up in the comic, but based on her actual history, that kind of stuff would be out of character. As much as we may feel like it's within her, there seems to be little evidence for it.

Yet?

Interlude got it in his post above-Marten has the least going on of all the characters, but complains about his life the most. I'm sure we all know people like that in real life, and generally don't like them much. Indeed, a lot of the interplay of the comic tends to be Marten getting verbally (and sometimes physically! (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2034)) Gibbs-slapped when he complains about his life. It seems unsympathetic of his friends, but most of them probably think he's entirely too whiny for his own good.

Lots of different ways it could go, if Dora gets more involved in the ongoing plot. Or not, if it's just a one-off.
I agree that Dora kind of feels like a meddler/manipulater type, but she never seems to do anything like that.
[ ... ]
Hm... the VERY early storielines come to mind. I've always had the feeling she kinda navigated Faye and Marten into finally talking about things between them in the open. I can't shake the feeling there were ulterior motives for her back then.

And whether she knows it or not, being the owner of CoD does grant her a LOT of social controll power. Not in a direct sense in that she could use her position of employer of a large group of a given social circle to make them do anything against their will... but she can indirectly affect a lot of emotional stuff thats going on inside "her den", so to speak.

@Interlude:
I see. Very interesting. So moping DOES make people interested in your shitty life. Good to know. :-D

This doesn't seem at all to be Elliot's character.

Actually, the forum assumptions I've seen people make during this arc really give me the feeling that a lot of the forum thinks the QC is composed of terrible, terrible people.

* Dora isn't going to go psycho and/or start manipulating people behind Marten's back. That's not her nature.
* Elliot isn't going to go start pummelling people left and right.
* And then there's that guy who's saying he fully expects Padma to ditch Marten with a "You wanna be with me? You?  Dude, you have no prospects. You're floating through life. And that's just not attractive for the long term. It was fun. See ya."? When have we ever seen any indication of Padma being so monstrous?

Come on, people. We aren't dealing with a cast of Mengeles here. Give Jeph SOME credit for creating characters with enough humanity in them to actually think about each other.

I think it waspretty well established in here that there wouldn't be Marten poundings from Elliott when he found out.  it would be more like foetal sobbing in the corner.

Which is why I tend to like the interpretation that he's high-fiving Marten convincing Padma to stay a bit longer - incomplete information on Elliott's part makes for more drama chances and funnier hijinks.

Also, Jeph's comment about "Briefly debated giving Marten a wet patch on his boxers." was hysterical.

I agree that I don't think Elliot knows about Martin and Padma. Could be wrong, but I suspect he's pumped because Padma's announced at work she's not leaving just yet. Whether he's reading something into that decision is another matter, but it very well could be.

If this is so, we've probably not seen the last of the Cringing Marten, but for different reasons.

Cringing Marten sounds like the name of a bird.

"The Cringing Marten is commonly found in the Northeastern United States.  It is an onnivore, favouring a wide variety of foodstuffs.  Its plumage is subdued, ranging from brown to a light blud grey."
Very funny, and gets my Internets. Still, the bird's name is spelled "Martin." A Cringing Marten is clearly a small carnivore, a new subspecies of this part of the Mustelinae family. So: "It is an omnivore, favouring a wide variety of foodstuffs: although it normaly feeds on squirrels, mice, rabbits, birds, fish, insects, and eggs, the Cringing Marten will also eat fruit and nuts when these are available, and is passingly fond of pancakes.  Its colouring is subdued, ranging from brown to a light blud grey, often sporting odd markings in darker hues that some have humorously suggested appear to be slogans or the name of obscure musical collectives. The creature gets iys odd name from its non-aggressive tendencies, together with a decided predilection for moping."

I've often wondered why Jeph (or Veronica, if you prefer) named his lead character after a slightly overgrown weasel.

Yeah, the girl in panel one who seems worried by Marten's lack of pants is not the same as any of the ones previously grouped under the "sweet-tits" monicker. In fact I have no idea how they are supposed to be related beyond having slightly the same shade of hair, which could just mean they favour the same brand of dye.

However, that doesn't answer the new guys question about 2066; they do have the same hair colour and style, similar builds and nose-/ear-shapes but they do not have the same colour eyes. Semi-identical twin sisters perhaps? Or Jeph intended to draw the same girl but messed up the eyes.

Neither is conclusive; I've personally got four pairs of "good" glasses, and the art is really not consistent enough that I'd trust length of hair as an identifying feature.

But on the other hand, there's not really much going for them being the same either.  Same face, same body, same dye ... oh, and glasses and generally the same hairstyle ...

... now why am I even arguing this? :-\

And different eye colour, as was said at the start of the discussion.  But yeah, she's just a background character of no significance.

All unidentified female background characters areSweet-tits, except the ones who are not.

Also, Elliot(t) is starting to remind me of Moose from the Archie comics. Marten does not remind me of Reggie, whom Moose usually beat up. Padma has black hair, as does Moose's girlfriend Midge, who was usually the reason Moose beat Reggie up.

I should not be thinking about this.

Marten is too nice, and too broke, to be Reggie.(I think Reggie had money, but I could be wrong.)

I tried raising my hand to high-five position after reading this comic and I can see how from straight on it might look like your fist is clenched. Unless you've actively opened your hand before you started raising it, otherwise just relaxed it might be loosely closed. Plus yeah, background does highly suggest it's just what Marten's seeing.

Though the smile on Elliot's face in the third panel looks so funny with the closed fist.

I've been misunderstood.  I was not saying the girl in Friday's comic was the same as the little red-headed girl (who is not  Sweet-tits), but rather using the redhead for comparison, as a background character that had  settled in.  By comparison, this new girl has not yet settled in.

Early redheaded sightings;

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1445

(anyone got others?  It should keep us busy this weekend...)

Neither of these predate Sweet-tits, and yes there's a resemblance, but I still maintain that, like yelling bird, Sweet-tits is meta and can't appear in-comic.

Here's a thought:  The background, short haired redhead is actually a government operative, working for whatever outfit Alan Turing works for.  She's keeping watch on Marten and Pintsize because the government is still worried about Pintsize's chassis.  Or perhaps they're worried about what Marten's mom might have told him.  After all she seems to have some important people as clients, people who shouldn't be saying certain things.

I'm pretty sure Jeph has called that girl Sweet-tits before.  And 2031 is a very obvious in-joke.  At this point, it sounds like Watsonian desperation...

Personally I think Elliot knows about Marten and Padma.  She goes into work and announces to Elliot and/or Renee that she is staying for a couple more weeks.  She's asked why and just blurts it out (because we all know how well Padma's filter works...).  As far as Elliot's greeting to Marten, I think he feels comfortable enough around him to mess with him a little.

From what we've seen of Elliot, yes, I agree with you completely.  But it's possible that he acts completely socially awkward toward people he doesn't know enough, but once you gain his trust and he's comfortable, he opens up (pretty much the way I am).

In any case, that's just my theory.  I guess we'll all find out soon enough  :-D

Hah! You're not sorry one bit, even though you really should be. Also, does Elliot really seem like 'Bro' material to you? Steve would high-five Marten for that, yes, but Elliot?

On the other hand, a "Your plan worked, Muad'dib!" high-five seems bekevabkle. Except perhaps the 'Muad'dib' part. Elliot's probably not that much into Dune.

I meant "believable," but damn, that's one awesome typo. It really should mean something.

Jeph is an avowed admirer of Charles Schulz. So my guess is that, if there is a red-haired girl who keeps showing up in the background, she is actually Marten's dream girl. Only unlike Charlie Brown's red haired girl, whom he sees but we don't, Marten's red-haired girl is seen by the audience but not by him. Unlike Charlie Brown who is doomed to always love from afar, Marten is doomed to always walk right past his ideal woman while pursuing an unending parade of relationships that are ultimately unworkable.

I like Eliot very much. He's a gentle giant (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GentleGiant)* to the core. Oh so gentle. He may even beat Marten in terms of kindness.

I prefer the interpretation that Elliot is high-fiving Marten because he isn't wearing pants.

Same. Otherwise, he's taking the pants-lackage in stride.
