Surprisingly, one of the good things about where i live, is a decent music scene. Lots of local shows and a fairly big venue. But this is about the bands from your town/state/province/region/etc.
Easily my favorite band from around here, because they sound like nobody else in VT are these guys: www.myspace.com/theyearsbest
Totally cool dudes, and they write some amazing music.
-
Every local band here is awful.
I will not be bothered to find examples.

Hey wow this band is pretty local to me (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,15389.0.html)!
-
This band (http://www.myspace.com/theseestates) is very local to me. This local, even:
-
favorite local bands include
-the nation blue (kindof a cross between hardcore and grunge)
-die!die!die! (technically new zealand but i don't care...punk)
-Ellora (i picked up their demo at school one day as they handed it out...emo...not tommy's kind of emo)
-crimson fire (the cheesiest power metal in existence...jack black aspires to this kindof cheesiness)
-
Hmm, my favorite local bands would have to be:
<a href="http://www.myspace.com/familiaband ">Familia[/url] (close friends with all of them, so they get bonus fan points. I'd recommend giving Stereo Makeout a listen.)
You Say Party! We Say Die! (http://www.myspace.com/yousaypartywesaydie) (They're getting HUGE coverage now, they're brilliant)
Bella (http://www.myspace.com/bella) (These gals & guy are super sweet and I expect big things from them in the future)
Hey Ocean (http://www.myspace.com/heyocean) (Once again, simply rockin. Stellar live shows. Listen to Peach Sleep & Beatboxer if you can.)

Most of the bands here are crap. Not normal crap. Terrible, hideous, abominous crap.
There are two bands that are good. Amazing, even.
Helken
Joe Casta
Also, I am in a joke Goremetal band.
We are called Crucifixtion
We make fun of black metal.
We are overly simplistic, with vocals that are too deep to be good.
-
As far as i know, in my area we have a hardcore scene and thats it.
That is...until my band starts gigging with our epic prog/fusion.
-
I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!
-
Some of these bands are broken up or no longer active but:
Alchemist (Psycadelic / Death Metal)
Armored Angel (Death / Thrash Metal)
Pod People (Doom)
Log (Stoner Doom, with a Harmonica player!!!)
Psychrist(Black Metal)
Nazxul (Black Metal)
Myrddraal (Black metal)
-
Myspace.com/theedenexpress
They sound very soothing and pleasant untill the song nears the end, or you start listening to the lyrics. They're older stuff was much more electronica, but this is very nice as well. They put on good shows, Ryan wears angel wings and a dress, and his brother David, just wears sparkly makeup. They get pretty into it, which makes them enjoyable.

in toher news you've reminded me about gospel of the horns (thrashy black metal)

I am in the Eagles.
I'm the drummer dude who also sings a bit.
You got your top pulled back and the radio on?

I love it when someone with different taste in music calls a band crap out of simple ignorance and opinion. Makes you look so cool. I think your heads been hit one too many times in the mosh pit. Work on your tolerance.
I didn't enjoy Helken particularily, I can see how they'd be enjoyable if I was iinto thrashy screaming stuff.
Can you give a link to Joe Casta?
Lebanon were awesome, too bad their not coming to Vancouver.
The_dude, get out of my cab before I knock the White Russian from hand.

No, some bands just suck, and that's especially true if you're just looking in your local scene. I'm not talking about style, because that's all opinion. But if they don't have any TALENT, no matter what group of people they're trying to appeal to, they still won't be any good.

Some great bands from Cincinnati, Ohio.
www.myspace.com/cariclara
www.myspace.com/500milestomemphis
www.myspace.com/moth
www.myspace.com/turnbullacs
-
Guys, the point of this thread is to verbally fellate me for making such totally awesome music. Get it right.
(charles i like that first one there)
-
Two really great bands that are both good friends of mine, and excellent contributors to our local music scene:
Neocracy (http://www.myspace.com/neocracy) - Some kind of metal, if I try to remember which version, I'll probably get it wrong.
The Pax Cecilia (http://www.myspace.com/thepaxcecilia) - I guess they're being called post-metal or something now?
-
Dear John, I already have done that in another thread.
I like Kentucky Sound Arsenal (http://www.myspace.com/ksaband) (metal? Post-metal?)
Sleeping in Gethsemane (http://www.myspace.com/sleepingingethsemane) (I think post-metal again? I'm not sure)
The Throbbing Hotrods (http://www.myspace.com/thethrobbinghotrods) (surf!)
The Deaths (http://www.myspace.com/thedeaths) were local, but they started getting sorta serious, so they moved to the twin cities. They've played at SXSW a couple times.
-
Brittany is doing it properly. Also those last two posts were uniformly excellent.
-
I'm just going to pimp my band and the bands of my friends, who coincidentally are also in all the best bands in town:
My band:
http://www.myspace.com/lrhsw
Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight are a great noise-punk-saxophone explosion:
http://www.myspace.com/midnightbomberwhatbombsatmidnight
Their drummer is also in The Royal Bangs, who just got signed to the Black Keys guy's record label and mentioned in Pitchfork. They sound kind of like Pavement and Broken Social Scene and put out one of the 3 best albums of last year:
http://www.myspace.com/theroyalbangs
Fecal Japan is a great noise band:
http://www.myspace.com/fecaljapanolecularization
The Cheat are kind of garagey and kind of fucking awesome live, and may be coming soon to a town near you, check and see:
http://www.myspace.com/iheartthecheat
The Tenderhooks are good old indie pop:
http://www.myspace.com/tenderhooks
WOMAN are.. fuck, I'm getting tired of writing descriptions... they're loud.
http://www.myspace.com/womanmusic
Dixie Dirt are like a cross between Cat Power and Mogwai, only better than that sounds. "Bad Lights" is one of the best songs ever.
http://www.myspace.com/dixiedirt
There are more. Basically this town has a lot of good bands in proportion to the fact that it's a pretty ass-backwards redneck industrial shit-hole.
-
I am from the Chicago area. Western Suburbs. There are some really good bands and some really bad bands.
Here is my band - Inspector Owl (www.myspace.com/inspectorowl)
Anyway, here are some awesome local bands.
Surround Sound - www.myspace.com/surroundsound
good catchy power pop
Unique Chique - myspace.com/uniquechique
arty stuff with awesome vocals
Light pollution - myspace.com/lightpollution
the western suburbs version of the arcade fire
There are lots more, im just lazy.
-
Can I marry your band, TheoristB? You're really really good!
As for you, Mr. zerodrone, I don't think the recording quality lets me hear accurately what you really sound like. 'Twas live, I am going to assume? It reminds me of when I saw TVotR, and I took a recording with my cell phone and it's unlistenable.
-
Can I marry your band, TheoristB? You're really really good!
You can totally marry us... or just tell your friends and stuff about us. Glad you enjoyed the music.
-
My band: www.myspace.com/fuzzmusic
-
I really like Inspector Owl!
Okay so I guess I oughta do this right. Here are awesome local bands.
Rah Rah (http://www.myspace.com/rahrahband) - Local indie darlings who sound phenomenal. They used to be a trio but are now a loose collective. Released a great EP this past summer. The lead guy listens to a lot of alt-country.
Sylvie (http://www.myspace.com/sylviemusic) - Great local band, who've been called "Fugazi as filtered through a prairie lens," a description which fits up to a point - their music is a lot more expansive and a lot less agressive, but still convey a similar feel. Released two albums, the last on Smallman Records in 2005.
Geronimo (http://www.myspace.com/geronimonow) - Big in both the indie community and the punk community here. Released an alright EP this past summer. They might be touring with Dinosaur Jr. which would be phenomenal.
Go Jeff! (http://www.myspace.com/gojeffmusic) - Dance-punkers from Moose Jaw who sound more fun live than they do on record. They signed themselves to a kind of bad label which is unfortunate.
Polymaths (http://www.myspace.com/polymaths) - Indie pop folk and all-around good people who are playing more and more shows, which is good.
Hot Blood Bombers (http://www.myspace.com/hotblood) - Shit-kicking garage-punk. Superb live act when they're sober enough to pull it off. Great energy balanced with songwriting smarts. Their bassist's sound is derived simply by turning every setting on the amp up to 10.
Fattony And The Shitheads (http://www.myspace.com/fattonyandtheshitheads) - How authentic are these old-school punks? Their lead singer quit drinking when he was nine. He's straight-edge now.
Generals And Majors (http://www.myspace.com/generalsandmajors) - Intricate, mathy synth-rock. It doesn't come through as much in the songs on their Myspace but when they lock into a busy groove live it's insane.
Goldenmile (http://www.myspace.com/goldenmile) - Quirky, fun indie pop. I guess they've been recording for a while which is a shame because they should not only be playing more shows but they should also release a damn record already.
Phew! I think that about covers it, as far as bands I like go. I probably missed a couple.
EDIT: Fuck how'd I miss highly-political folk-punk outfit Fight The Monster (http://www.myspace.com/fightthemonster).
-
There aren't many good bands in Halifax, NS, but here are some that I like.
The Museum Pieces: They used to rent a room in the basement of my school to practice in. I've seen them a couple of times, they're pretty good.
Three Guys and a Keyboard: Yeah, that's their name. Friend of a friend's band. Saw them in a bar once, and I thought they were great.
Sonic Prophet: A bunch of high school kids from my old high school. They aren't bad, actually. They play Jazz, Blues and Rock.
Wintersleep: Bolded, because I love them. There's something very unique and strikingly honest about their music. Easilly one of my favourite bands.
-
Wintersleep are so great. "Danse Macabre" is a mixtape staple for me.
They toured with Sylvie (see above) and Uncut a while back, and by all accounts put on great shows.
-
Some great bands from Cincinnati, Ohio.
www.myspace.com/cariclara
www.myspace.com/500milestomemphis
www.myspace.com/moth
www.myspace.com/turnbullacs
Haha awesome. Moth are a good band. My band played with them at a dive bar in Lexington Kentucky a year or so ago. It was really surreal because I purchased their major label album and loved it back in the day. THe dude from Cari Clara was playing second guitar in Moth at the time. The next night we played in Columbus Ohio with Ampline who game me the entire Tiberius Records catalogue so that was pretty sweet.
-
I really like Inspector Owl!
I was going to comment on your stuff. It is awesome. The songwriting is aweome, i am a huge fan of laptop pop rock, i wish you had more keyboards. Yes! What are you doing your programing in?
-
my mate's band Ghosts Of Television. Sort of post-punk/psychedelic with a bit of dub and electronica thrown in. From Sydney.
www.myspace.com/ghostsoftelevision
-
kartta are from aberdeen, and they are quiet good!
http://www.myspace.com/mapsuk (http://www.myspace.com/mapsuk)
as are Toy, who I also quite like. Sean has a lovely voice.
http://www.myspace.com/toy3 (http://www.myspace.com/toy3)
and No Pasaran are quite new/lovely as well
http://www.myspace.com/nopasaran1 (http://www.myspace.com/nopasaran1)
-
Two of my favorite local bands are Dr Theopolis (http://www.drtheopolis.com/), and another band you may have heard of.
The Decemberists. W00T! Portland!
-
I was going to comment on your stuff. It is awesome. The songwriting is aweome, i am a huge fan of laptop pop rock, i wish you had more keyboards. Yes! What are you doing your programing in?
Just Garageband. I did a new "He Said She Said" demo with horns and stuff programmed in Garageband! Also hopefully I'm getting something of a band together real soon!
-
Fontana (http://www.myspace.com/fontana1116) is really the only local band I know about, and for some reason I have an extreme dislike of them, even though one is a very good acquantince
EDIT: Darn, I completely forgot about Eudemonia (http://www.myspace.com/eudemonia)
-
My favorite local band by far. Just about everyone else sucks the big one.
They put on really great live shows and have seen them just about every time they've played

Over the counter were really cool, but they broke up. awesome dudes though. I still play halo with them saturday nights. Promise of tommorow is good, only cuz they stole two performers from OTC. and um... I dunno. I don't really go for the music any more, I go for the pits.
and I got shanghaid into some terrible, dead end band. but, the remaining members of OTC and my best friend and I are thinking of starting a band of our own. y'know, as soon as I get off probation...

Here are some sweet local Minneapolis bands:
One For The Team: http://www.myspace.com/therealonefortheteam (http://www.myspace.com/therealonefortheteam)
Plastic Constellations: http://www.myspace.com/theplasticconstellations (http://www.myspace.com/theplasticconstellations)

Doomtree: http://www.myspace.com/doomthefucktree (http://www.myspace.com/doomthefucktree)
And here's my band! Which, uh, is just me.
Bitter Campari: http://www.myspace.com/bittercamparimusic (http://www.myspace.com/bittercamparimusic)
-
I drank with Hockey Night a couple years ago. They were all very fond of shaking hands, and for that I approve. They got beer on the plants and walls though.
-
Are you from the Minneapolis area?
-
I drank with Hockey Night a couple years ago. They were all very fond of shaking hands, and for that I approve. They got beer on the plants and walls though.
I think one of my favorite shows that I have ever played was when Inspector Owl played with Hockey Night and Troubled Hubble. The Hockey Night guys are pretty awesome, the once gave me their toast at Denny's.
-
Fargo. They played at the Great Northern brewery, but that doesn't exist anymore :(

There's a great little musical project called The Empty Guggenheims consisting of my good friend Mike with contributions by my other friends Zac and Steve. It's largely Mike with a guitar and looping peddle, some vocals, lots of feedback, with Steve and Zac on keyboard and guitar respectively. There's some casio stuff (glitchy kinds of things) going on as well. There's one album, called "The Red Tape" recorded on an old tape deck recording device from the 70s or 80s I think with another album shortly to follow (both were recorded during the same session). It was recorded on Mike's enclosed deck. I'm on it for a few sporadic seconds with a recorder and random guitar strumming (EDIT: I forgot, this was in the second half of the session so it won't be on this one. No great loss though). There's background chatter and such from the people there but this, while not intentional, adds to the feel. Anyways, here's a link which should still be active if anyone's interested:

Personally I think it's pretty darn good but it's not for everyone.

I come from Indiana which may not be the center of the music universe, but my town, Bloomington, has an amazing local scene.
husband&wife: You may have heard them around because they're getting pretty big. I have seen them acouple times and know the band memebers. Yeah, I get christmas cards.
The Impossible Shapes: Amazing local band. The video for their song "Florida Silver Springs" is amazing. Watch it now.
Busmans Holiday: Just a bunch of cool dudes. One of the most amazing bass players I have ever seen. He got a full ride to the Indiana University School of Music. Did I mention it's the best in the world!
The Robo-Vogues: My own band. We don't have any songs on MySpace now because were improving very rapidly and whe didn't like any. So far we have released to full length albums, and EP and a Christmas CD. Workig on the third.
So many other great bands and some good venues too. If you're ever passing through check out Rhino's or The Art Hospital. We also have Plan-it-X fest every year!
-
Oh, Fargo, land of music. Right.
A Work Begun (http://www.myspace.com/aworkbegun)- I've seen them live a couple times. They put on a really good show.
These Hearts Turn Quickly (http://www.myspace.com/thtq)- So they're not the greatest, but my friend is the guitarist, so I feel the need to pimp them when possible.
This World Fair (http://www.myspace.com/thisworldfair)- So they're not from Fargo, but I'm from Minnesota, so I feel entitled to include bands from Minneapolis. I saw them open for The Spill Canvas and really liked them.
Seconds Before (http://www.myspace.com/secondsbefore)- Another one from Minneapolis. I've been listening for a few years now and still enjoy their stuff.
-
http://www.myspace.com/haloswerefoundatthelandingsite
The bassist is my old roomate, theyre pretty good and have really only been playing shows for like a year.
http://www.myspace.com/yakuzaheartattack
They've played with my friends band a few times and they play some really interesting music, no lyrics or vocals just music that you can make a video game to in your head.
http://www.myspace.com/shotgunforroyalty
Just two guys who are loud and intense when they play and is something you have to see to really appreciate. Just great to sit in a small bar and hear them go all out until their instruments break.
-

Do not forgot Murder By Death.
I played in a basement in bloomington with a band called Prizzy Prizzy Please are they still around?
-
My friend Kitty and I just started a little project thing. We haven't done much in terms of actual music yet, because we haven't gotten together for a while. But hopefully we'll have something soon. However, there is something Kitty recorded. It's this weird thing he did with his bass. It sounds really cool.

We've got a crop of talent around where I live, it's just a shame that nobody ever seems to make it big.
We have;
Subversion (http://www.myspace.com/subversionband)
Enter Shikari (http://www.myspace.com/entershikari)
Remiah (http://www.myspace.com/remiah)
And from Portsmouth, which has become my home-from-home-from-home, we have
Become Someone's Hero (http://www.myspace.com/gregdavison)
Which is just my friend Greg making pretty noises.
Also, Johnny I rather appreciate your music.

pittsburgh doesnt have any one famous, all we have are local acts.
http://www.myspace.com/wizkhalifa
he was in rolling stone!
http://www.myspace.com/thegovament
also rap, a little more mainstream sounding
-
I'd never heard christian screamo before... i'm still confused
One of my friends is in a Christian screamo band. It totally works. Your band members are Christian and you play screamo.
On a similar note, I have been to a Christian metal show before. These guys (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=7684873) rocked it pretty hard.
-
So, I have to plug this band:
http://www.myspace.com/suttercanekc
They are from Kansas City, which is my hometown.
My nephew is the guitarist, and they pretty awesome to me.
-
This is my daughters favorite local band
www.AnaDies.com (http://www.AnaDies.com)
from what I've heard they are pretty good, not my scene but good.

I am not really into the "local scene," but I know people in these bands, and occasionally may or may not listen to them:

http://www.myspace.com/thefadingcollection
http://www.myspace.com/theassailant

basically I went to high school or college with people from these bands, so its not exactly defining what Im into or what exactly is going on in the seattle/northend/eastside area.
...to get technical, I found out about OR from a guy who used to perform with them, but is not in the band.
-
Reeeeight!
Unfortunately, I'm very small town and most bands round here haven't an ounce of imagination and generally attempting to sound exactly like their favourite band (generally Green Day or some nu-emo depending on their age). However, as always there are exceptions to th rule.
http://www.myspace.com/clareblackman (http://www.myspace.com/clareblackman)
Clare Blackman rooted in country, blues and folk music.
http://www.myspace.com/beatgliderband (http://www.myspace.com/beatgliderband)
Beat Glider, influenced by shoegaze, plus Pavement, Sonic Youth etc...
http://www.myspace.com/lesacvspip (http://www.myspace.com/lesacvspip)

Hymns & Ghosts: An attempt at combining noise with folk music, and failing miserably.

I just read that the Cherry Poppin' Daddies are from where I live...weird.
Anyway, my friend has a band in Portland that is called Plastic Pocky (http://www.myspace.com/plasticpocky) and they're selling albums now.
Bands from Portland...eh...King Black Acid, 6gig, Still Pending (www.stillpending.com, apparently), A Weather, The Shiny Things...and a lot more.

Is it too late for me to come back to this thread and plug my band?
http://www.myspace.com/retrospectra (http://www.myspace.com/retrospectra)
We do alot of stuff, from fusion, to ambient, out to prog.
Most of the stuff on there is computer made. But war in actuality is about 20 minutes long, but had to have the long jam section cut out.
Also it was recorded with 2 microphones in the next room, so its not the best quality.

The Library Fire
the Working Title
Band of Horses....well they live here now, so I guess I'll say local

Abigail Williams is a pretty cool Death/Black Metal from my locale. They're slowly coming more to prominence, I believe. This is a good thing.

Death Takes Its Toll On The Masses is a Death Metal joke band. Little playing ability, a lot of time on their hands. And the fact that its me and my buddy is a plus.

Diaemus is experimental ambient music. I think its interesting.

To add to I Am Not Amused's list of Minneapolis groups,
heiruspecs- http://myspace.com/heiruspecs
ela- http://myspace.com/ela
the goddamn doo wop band- http://myspace.com/thegoddamndoowopband
battle royale- http://myspace.com/thebattleroyalemusic
Never heard Heiruspecs or Ela, but Battle Royale is pretty good.
AND! I actually got pulled up on stage by the Goddamn Doo Wop Band when they played at the Triple Rock late last year. It was a good show and a lot of fun.
Do you live in the Minneapolis area?

The Bones Royal (http://"www.myspace.com/bonesroyal")
What happens when Led Zeppelin and The Mooney Suzuki have a lovechild.
Reckless Sons (http://"www.myspace.com/recklesssons")
Catchy, blues-driven rock 'n' roll.
Strangers on the Footpath (http://"www.myspace.com/strangersonthefootpath")
Shoegazing meets folk rock all over again (although the music they have up at the moment may not reflect the shoegazing so well).
