Ok folks, here we go. I had a hell of a fun time putting this together. Here's the bracket. Explanations about everything below.
Fixed the brackets. Here's a link to the full bracket in case you want it (http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2ld8zt1&s=5). Click the image, then click "view Raw".
First off, a few things of note:
- I’ll elaborate on my ranking system I touched on in the nomination thread. First I ranked them by number of overall nominations. The top five were: NMH – Aeroplane (8 votes); Black Sabbath – Paranoid (7), Explosions in the Sky – The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place; Low – Things we Lost in the Fire; and Owls – Owls, each with 6 votes. I then counted the number of other nominations for that band. In EitS’s case, they had 2 other nominations, so they were ranked #3. Neither Low nor Owls had any other albums nominated, so I went alphabetically. I did that for the rest of the 59 albums.
- A few albums and bands have been abbreviated. This is so that they can all fit in the cell. If you have questions about the album or band, please PM me.
- TWO changes have been made to the rankings:
o Fugazi – The Argument had two nominations, but it is NOT included in the bracket. We had 25 albums with two nominations and at least one other album nominated, but we only needed 24. Fugazi already appears higher on the list, so I took the liberty of excluding it. That way another band’s album can appear on the list.
o The 6 seeds were as follows (in order): Bob Dylan – Bringing It All Back Home; Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited; Sigur Rós – Ágætis Byrjun; John Coltrane – Blue Train. The 11 seeds were (in order): Sigur Rós – ( ); Sigur Rós – Takk…; Agalloch – The Mantle; John Coltrane – Giant Steps. Because I am following the normal 1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, 3 vs. 14 … 8 vs. 9 match-ups in a clockwise fashion, we would have ended up with two Dylan vs. Sigur Rós (blue & yellow) and one Coltrane vs. Coltrane (green) matchups. Thus, I switched Hwy 61 with Blue Train.
- If you want further explanation, PM me. I’m happy to describe my process. I have spreadsheets, etc. of everything.
- If you don’t like any of the process I’ve gone through, tough shit.
Now, the exciting part: the voting process! Here’s how I want you to vote:
You’ll notice there are four colours: Blue, Yellow, Green and Orange. You need to pick the winners of each match up in each colour. So for your reply, I want it like this (or something similar):
BLUE
NMH – Aeroplane
Pixies – Doolittle
Mt. Goats –
Beatles
Dylan
Agalloch
Slint
Jawbreaker
YELLOW
Same as above
GREEN
Ditto
ORANGE
Ibid
For round one, you will pick a total of THIRTY-TWO (32) albums, eight from each colour. So, in my above example, I think that NMH’s Aeroplane is a better disc than Pavement’s Wowee Zowee!; Pixies’ Doolittle is better than Mclusky; Mt. Goats better than Opeth; etc. Make sense? I assume you’ve all done these kind of brackets before. If not, PM me and I can explain further.
After one week (or shorter, depending on how fast you all vote), I’ll tally all the votes. At that time, I’ll fill in the winners on the bracket, repost it, and we’ll do round two. Et cetera & et cetera. Got it? Good.
Have fun!

Yaaaaaaaay brackets.
-
What's the time frame on the voting process? I haven't listened to some of these bands and I'd rather download them before deciding.
-
Are we allowed to change our votes before the end of voting?
-
And is everyone voting on these albums or just the people who initially voted these albums in?
-
I would assume that anyone can vote.
-
I think that is a pretty safe assumption.
Also,
After one week (or shorter, depending on how fast you all vote), I’ll tally all the votes.
That is probably how long we have.
-
Hmm... Bowie’s Low made the bracket with 2 votes, but All the Pretty Little Horses, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Loveless aren't in with 3? :( Not that I expected the first two would make it past the first round, but I'd've thought MBV would've been a contender.

One of the best albums on here, to me (although most of them are great), is You Are There. Seems mean to pit it against Abbey Road. MONO doesn't stand a chance :-(
These were mostly easy decisions for me though. Choosing between Wilco and Mogwai was tough, as was choosing between Okkervil River and the Wrens but for the most part this round was an easy one.

Hmm... Bowie’s Low made the bracket with 2 votes, but All the Pretty Little Horses, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and Loveless aren't in with 3? Sad Not that I expected the first two would make it past the first round, but I'd've thought MBV would've been a contender.
First off, All The Pretty Horses by Current 93 had three nominations (myself, Khar, and rynne). Why wasn't it counted for this? It beats just about every other album on here. Same goes for Throbbing Gristle's Twenty Jazz Funk Greats.
Shit, really? I must have missed that. Damnit, I'll check my spreadsheets when I'm back in the office tomorrow. I had formulas set up to tell me which albums were nominated multiple times, which ones had additional albums, etc. I obviously messed up on those three. Maybe the three were spelled differently (20 vs twenty, etc.) Sorry about that!
I guess, though, there's nothing I can do about it. It would complicate matters quite a bit, at this point. I'd have to re-rank everything with 3 and 2 votes, figure out which two-vote-plus-one albums would be excluded and redo the brackets. Sorry guys. I'm only one dude and missing three albums isn't too bad considering there were over 550 nominations.
As someone quoted above, you have one week to vote - 20:00GMT Monday 20 March 2009 is the cutoff. Anyone can vote, even if you didn't nominate anything in the initial thread. If people want to take the initiative and post some stuff in the med!afire thread, that'd be neat, but not necessary.
Again, sorry for missing those three. Hope you have fun nonetheless!
--Edit 1--
Regarding a tie - I've no idea. Hope it doesn't happen? My brain is shot tonight; I'll give it a thought during the week. And if you're upset about anything, read the last bullet point before I tell you how to vote.

Daydream Nation vs Paranoid was the real big decision ticket for me in this but I made my choice and I stand by it.
Kind of wish I'd taken more interest in the nomination thread though because there are a lot of choices where I don't even care about either album being nominated and also Revolver is not on here.
Oh well
-
As if to prove to myself I have nothing at all to do over my Spring break (which is wrong - I have tons of work) I present the current standings...with actual votes!

-
I hope I am doing this right! I am worried that I didn't put enough thought into this so I'm sorry, everyone, for not putting enough thought into this. I also skipped a bunch (if I have seriously never listened to one of the albums cause I figured that isn't fair), which I'm assuming is alright. I tried not to, though.

The list of current votes on the previous page has been updated. There's been some minor changes. For one thing, Modest Mouse is not only one vote behind Boris, The Clash have pulled pretty far ahead of Nick Cave, EitS and Velvet Underground are neck and neck, and Dylan is pulling pretty well ahead of Coltrane. There's still plenty of intense jockeying going on though.

I can understand Sonic Youth and Sigur Ros winning, but not Kyuss over BSS. I'd be profoundly unsurprised if a lot of people didn't bother listening to "Welcome to Sky Valley" before voting against it.
-
I wouldn't go that far. A lot of people really, really like BSS. Honestly, the only reason I ever said anything is because I have a comically bad relationship with Husker Du. I don't even like Agalloch that much and I still voted against Husker Du.

The list is updated again! Yes, I'm bored. All votes are current. Lots of albums are pulling ahead now but there are some really close races still. Things to watch: Silkworm vs. Slint (16-18), Sabbath vs. Sonic Youth (19-19), Bedhead vs. Mountain Goats (16-18), Wilco vs. Mogwai (17-19), The Unicorns vs. Iron and Wine (17-19), BSS vs. Kyuss (18-17), Silkworm vs. Pixies (17-19) and Boris vs. Modest Mouse (19-17). Lots of others are within three but plenty are way ahead by now and seem to be pretty definite winners of this round, assuming these voting trends continue.

Figured out why Loveless, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and All the Pretty Little Horses were excluded - one of you three nominated them as ALBUM - BAND, rather than BAND - ALBUM, and when I copied them into excel, I didn't catch it. So there are two nominations of Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats and one nomination of 20 Jazz Funk Greats - Throbbing Gristle. Same thing with the other two albums. I'm used to always writing (formatting) music as Band - Album. I tried to ensure I copied everything properly, but obviously missed on this one. Again, apologies.
Also, is it really necessary to do the running count of who's in the lead? That kinda takes away the surprise of the whole thing, and the surprise is kinda the point. I obviously can't stop you from doing so, but I must admit it's a bit annoying...
-
Well you did organize this thing so I'll take that to heart and call it quits on the tallying. I mean, I don't think the whole point is the surprise of who wins each round and personally I like seeing the jockeying for position, if you will, of the closer races but I shall stop posting that data nonetheless.
-
Ah, since I was the only one that nominated all three of those, I'm the one who screwed it up. I was thinking since it's an album nomination, the albums should be primary. Though, in my defense, I bolded the band names and italicized the album titles, as per the instructions. Even formatted it as "[album] BY [band]".
Still, the joke's on me since my later edits involved adding those three albums---which I liked and which already had 2 other nominations---in place of albums that only I'd nominated, to make sure at least some of my choices got in. :(
Also in that case, Daydream Nation, mclusky do dallas and Unknown Pleasures should be higher in the brackets, since I guess my votes for those were misformatted too.

Figured out why Loveless, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and All the Pretty Little Horses were excluded
Because Loveless is pretty goddamned terrible and one of the most over-rated albums ever.
-

No, I caught those. Daydream Nation really only had two nominations, Mclusky had three, as did Unknown Pleasures. I think it's because I know who Joy Division and Sonic Youth are, and Mclusky is in both the album and artist name as the first word, so I corrected them when I sorted the list.
--Edit--
Fixed the brackets on the first page. Take another look if you want to see how they're supposed to look.

Yea, thanks a ton Matt, and high five forum for keeping this thing going & interesting.
As for the albums, Beatles vs. Mono were probably my hardest vote. I'm a little disapointed Ted Leo isn't doing as well as i thought he would, same for Modest Mouse (but I've been on a major MM kick lately).

What a swell guy, that Matt is.
-
Raw Power by The Stooges also should have been counted. Looks like this was because some people nominated it as being by "Iggy and the Stooges" and some (notably, me) nominated it as just being by "Stooges". Ah well, c'est la vie.

Hardest was a tie between Abbey Road v You Are There and Paranoid v Daydream Nation.
I went for Mono and Sabbath because I figured considering the forum they were probably the underdogs.

I chose the albums I thought were better!

I honestly wouldn't have expected Mono to be an underdogg to the Beatles here but I consider it a testament to how fucking good an album Abbey Road is.

-
disappointed by the lack of any kinks or stones records yall
Yeah, that kinda bothered me too, but I don't really have any excuses since I knowingly used a couple of noms on things I didn't think had chance in hell considering this forum. Plus, both bands are alike in the sense that they always seem to have a couple songs per album that I don't much care for. But in terms of individual song picks, I'd put the Kinks and the Stones up against damn near anyone.
-
I knowingly used a couple of noms on things I didn't think had chance in hell considering this forum.
Yeah I made that same exact mistake
-
A couple? That was my entire nomination process! Actually my nominations were more "protest nominations" than ones that I really expected to get any votes.
-
Most of my nominations were ones I knew weren't going anywhere (for example, four people had done paranoid, and I was the only vote for Masters of Reality), but I picked a few that I had seen other people nominate. I need to listen to a lot of the albums still, but I doubt any of the bands I really like are getting past the first round. Because you guys (mostly) fail at music taste.

Almost felt like not voting due to the essentially arbitrary, annoying and inherently conservative way the choices were decided from the votes, but whatever.
Lot of crap albums, lots of stuff I've not heard. Might go on a downloading spree when I get back to England, see what I can dig up.

Lots of music I haven't listened to, so I abstained from a number of them. If it becomes an issue on down the line, I'll listen to stuff. I don't want to kill my waffles ratio right now, though.

I think I got 1 album and 2 bands. Take that, conformists.
-
I got every album I nominated... I guess I'm the least indie of them all.
Oh well. I'd also like to thank Matt for putting this all together, it's really fun.

Yeah I basically just voted for Pavement in the hopes that NMH wouldn't make it past the first round. I care for neither band.
The irrational My Bloody Valentine hate was fun, too.
My Bloody Valentine? Fuck My Bloody Valentine
for example, four people had done paranoid, and I was the only vote for Masters of Reality
This man has the best taste
-
Yeah I basically just voted for Pavement in the hopes that NMH wouldn't make it past the first round. I care for neither band.
I voted Pavement because I like them... and I am so sick of hearing about how awesome NMH is.
-
NMH won't win. I mean, it'll win this bracket and maybe even the next but I don't see it going all the way, especially when The Beatles and Bob Dylan are running against it. More people like the two latter and enough people will vote for something else on principal. Of course, then you could say "C'mon guys, don't vote The Beatles/Bob Dylan for president like every other website and magazine and music TV show and book on music ever."
On an unrelated note, anyone else a little surprised no Bonnie 'Prince' Billy made it onto the brackets? I thought everybody had a boner for Will Oldham.
-
I don't know, I'd heard a little NMH before this contest, but I went and listened to Aeroplane before casting my vote (or a decent amount of it, anyhow) and I kinda liked it. Agreed, though, definitely not going to win it all in my book, but I liked it better than Wowee Zowee, at any rate.
Also, with all the hype I see it get on this forum I really wanted to enjoy it, but goddamn I just cannot bring myself to like Spiderland. Seriously grating music, to me.
-
^ ^
This
(Though I didn't need to think too hard about Pixies/Silkworm)
-
A lot of the stuff this forum seems to love almost never attracts me on first listen. I listened to Spiderland 2 years ago and thought it sucked. But then I started listening to a bunch of post-rock, and I actually really liked it the second time I listened to it. Same thing with Agalloch and Kyuss.
As far as NMH goes, I might vote it through next round, but no further.
Low post: The Low album that was nominated is the only one I haven't heard. I really liked Tyranny of Distance, so much that it would've beat every other Low album except for Trust. Which wasn't nominated, hence my decision.
-
That's unfortunate, because Things We Lost in the Fire is better than Trust
-
If I get a chance to listen to it in the next week and that happens to be the case, I'll change my vote.
-
I think there's a little bit of conscious desire to not let the usual suspects win, but not enough of a desire to let relative newcomers *cough* Black Moth Super Rainbow *cough* Agalloch *cough cough* get very far.
-
It's sad that they're getting so destroyed since they are oh so awesome. Great stuff.
-
I have compiled every vote from this post and earlier.
Holy crap are there some tight races!
- Nothing in the blue bracket is tight - the winners are nearly locked in.
- There are two close races in the yellow bracket - each within one vote of each other.
- The green bracket has two races each within two votes of each other, along with one race that is in a dead heat!
- Orange has one one-vote race as well.
Again, you have until appx. 20:00GMT on 30 March 2009 to get your votes in. However, if you change your votes between now and then, and you are above this post, please PM me to inform me that you've edited your post. Otherwise I won't know you edited it, and your old vote will be counted.
I'm compiling these votes differently than I did the initial nominations. It's a bit more time-consuming, but it ensures me that all votes are counted (whereas I missed a few [see page one] for the initial nominations).
Have a good weekend!
-
I think I have a pretty good idea of what albums are in the tight races, so it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. Once again, thanks for all the work you're putting into this man.

I wish Black Moth Super Rainbow well and all, but aside from some of the beats they use I'm just really not into it. It's a timbre thing; it's like someone took some talented people and then paid them money to create an album while only using sounds I find irritating.
Also, I actively like Public Enemy quite a bit.
-
Yeah, it's probably too much to expect them to win, but I was hoping some of the more edgy kinds of music would make it far. Most of this stuff is relatively inoffensive-sounding until you get to Dopethrone, Agalloch, BMSR, Opeth, Black Sabbath, and a couple of the punk albums.
Public Enemy is good and all, but take away their lyrics and you have an assortment of beats and samples that kind of form a song. Do that for BMSR, and it makes me feel like I'm in a secret field that no one else knows about. I was hoping more people would know what that felt like. But the whole weirder music/lyric debate is not something I want to start.
How many other people have music transport their minds to some alien location, which you could spend hours describing every minute detail of? I'm not talking about any kind of congruence between the music and a particular moment in time of your life, like in the 'I feel so happy' thread. Maybe I have some kind of half-assed synesthaesia?
-
My experience with them is more "Oh fuck, mellotrons and vocoders. I hate mellotrons and vocoders."
-
See, I've never had that problem with any sounds as long as they aren't too loud.
I think maybe I just listen to music the way Roger Ebert watches movies. If that makes any sense to anyone besides myself.

Couple of my non-votes were because I wasn't familiar with the music. Some others were just too hard to really choose.
-
I am actually surprised, shocked, and slightly appalled that no spiritualized album made it on.
Probably my fault for not nominating them.

All votes up to this point have been counted. If you have changed your vote in between now and my post on Friday, you must PM me or your changes will not be taken into account.
Here's how things stand thus far:
- BLUE - Pretty much locked up. The closest matchup is a nine-vote difference.

- GREEN - All but one locked up, but that one has a one-vote difference AND SO HELP ME GOD IF THE (currently) LOSING ALBUM DOESN'T WIN I'M GOING TO BE PISSED IT IS A BRILLIANT ALBUM AND YOU PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T VOTE FOR IT CAN GO TO HELL
- ORANGE - All but one locked up also. There is currently a tie between two albums in one matchup! Your vote will count! One vote might take it all! THIS COULD BE YOU!!
