Poll came later, so there. :P ;)
-
The comic could go anywhere right now. Exciting times all right.
-
That would of course be why we keep tuning in every weekday for updates.
-
Hopefully more Pintsize.
-
My prediction: Emily brings Hanners and Marigold home; Em turns out to be a Yaoi fan so they stay up late watching some Magical Love Gentleman (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1441). Hanners and Marigold share some pictures of Marten (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1528) with Emily, who develops a big crush on him.
That didn't quite fit into the poll options, so I chose "How Hannelore got home".
-
I thought you meant these pictures. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1828)
And Gabby wearing Dora's pants? Not a value or aesthetic judgment here, just an observation that G>D along the Y and Z axes.
-
They'd fit on her head (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=49), though.
-
Anyone else have mixed feelings about Pintsize getting some character development? Stagnation is bad, but if there's nothing to replace the weirdness created by the old Pintsize, the strip will be lamentably more vanilla.
-
This isn't really out of character for Pintsize, at least I don't think so.
-

I don't entirely agree, I know I've always felt like there was something more behind the relationship between Marten and Pintsize and its nice to see it verbalized. I'm sure Pintsize will come up with plenty more ways to create weirdness.
-

I feel that the weirdness created by Pintsize has already been replaced by the weirdness created by Hannelore, Marigold, Emily, Clinton, and when she was around, Padma. Not to mention the weirdness which was essentially created by Hannerdad (sentient space stations, spaceships and all that).
-
It looks like the poll might have needed an "other category," I'm changing my bet to pintsize week.
-
Jeph mentioned that the real Smith doesn't allow trans women to be students, but I should point out that Claire is a grad student. Their graduate programs are co-ed, or so I've heard, which I guess makes it moot. Whether or not Smif's undergrad allows trans women is yet to be determined, hopefully Jeph makes it one of the ways the QC-verse is better than our own.
-
Jeph mentioned that the real Smith doesn't allow trans women to be students
I wonder where he heard that. According to their nondiscrimination policy this is untrue.
-
Now I can't find that tweet but I could've sworn he said that. Anyway, I'm glad it's not so.
-
Now I can't find that tweet but I could've sworn he said that. Anyway, I'm glad it's not so.
Admittedly non-discrimination policies don't necessarily reflect practice, so it's possible that they don't accept trans women.
-
Possibly, but I don't think they would be able to outright say that they were denied for being trans women...not like that really helps.
-
Shirt continuity failure... Not sure if we should alert The Jeph or if he'll catch it.
-
Reading the dialogue before really looking at the panels, I thought for a moment Pintsize was the only discount he could get due to his poor credit, which he expressed in a self-deprecating way.
...this is probably not the right way to read a comic.
-
Shirt continuity failure... Not sure if we should alert The Jeph or if he'll catch it.
That's just to illustrate the power of Pintsize's storytelling abilities.
-
Real men wear Pink......underwear.
-
Shirt continuity failure... Not sure if we should alert The Jeph or if he'll catch it.
That's just to illustrate the power of Pintsize's storytelling abilities.
And it's fixed.
Now... speculation. Martin's rage is over... what exactly? Pintsize telling such a crude story.... or is he outraged that Pintize is telling the truth? :-o
-
Yep, there's the Pintsize we know and ... er, know.
-
yay comic!
I wonder about the anatomy of those chassis...
-
OH GOD WHY WOULD SHE HAVE ARTICULATION SEAMS ON HER BOOBS
...because like most porn, those aren't her original boobs?
:-D  :psyduck:
-
Pintsize's face in the final panel :D
Real men wear Pink......underwear.
They're really more of a puce...
-
http://www.questionablecontent.net/1506
-
Combine that and rule 34, and you have Pintsize's story!
-
NOT HELPING, PINTSIZE!!!!! :psyduck:
-
....Pintsize's face in the last panel....
It's killed me....its fucking killed me!
:-D
-
yay comic!
I wonder about the anatomy of those chassis...
I believe I recall one strip that mentions AnthroPC's as "sexaroids" to some folks. But I could be wrong.
Also, Momo is one to retch considering what she's thought of in the past. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1658)
-
And that's where babies come from... for cyborgs.
-
NOT HELPING, PINTSIZE!!!!! :psyduck:
Great callback! (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=11).
-
Somehow I knew RealDolls would be referenced or alluded to at some point.
-
I'm starting to wonder how Marigold afforded Momo in the first place. Her original chasis still looked like a step up from Pintsize and Winslow, and Marigold doesn't exactly look like she's swimming in money. Was this ever explained or should I just assume her parents bought it for her like my friends parents always buy them stuff, like a friggen apartment...
-
NOT HELPING, PINTSIZE!!!!! :psyduck:
Brings me back to:
http://superdickery.com/images/stories/dick/whatkindofsicksupersnuffcomicisthis.jpg (http://superdickery.com/images/stories/dick/whatkindofsicksupersnuffcomicisthis.jpg)
"Pintsize! YOU'RE RUINING EVERYTHING!"
-
Last panel's face is so adorable. I made a forum account just so I could use it as an avie.
Back to comic discussion. Marigold's dad seems to be well economically, so maybe there it is.
-
So...
Does Momo have breast articulation seams, too?
-
Yeah, I thought of making it my avatar too, but I'm happy with British Pintsize. Tally ho!
I don't know what "breast articulation seams" are.
-
I don't know what "breast articulation seams" are.
It's where the rockets are stored:
-
So my first assumptions are that Marten is telling this story, and the glare is because the nice lady-bot behind the desk turns out to be Pintsize in a borrowed chassis.
But seemingly others are taking it differently.
By the way, http://www.questionablecontent.net/twitter.php seems to be lacking @EmilyAzuma and @cosetteisclumsy; any others? I'm surprised Claire and Clinton haven't boarded the whale.
-
I absolutely love those expressions in the last panel. Pintsize's especially.

Also, Momo is one to retch considering what she's thought of in the past. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/1658)
I never noticed before, but... That "daydream" looks an awful lot like her current chassis...
-
I'm starting to wonder how Marigold afforded Momo in the first place. Her original chasis still looked like a step up from Pintsize and Winslow, and Marigold doesn't exactly look like she's swimming in money. Was this ever explained or should I just assume her parents bought it for her like my friends parents always buy them stuff, like a friggen apartment...
Mari said she'd get a loan for a particular model for Momo. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1994) She can pay for the new chassis for some "sacrifices." (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2001)
Momo promises to pay it back. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1995) She attempts to find work. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2006) Manages to find a job. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2007) Gets paid. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2096) And fails repaying it back. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2097)
-
So my first assumptions are that Marten is telling this story, and the glare is because the nice lady-bot behind the desk turns out to be Pintsize in a borrowed chassis.
But seemingly others are taking it differently.
More like, Marten was telling the story in panels 2 & 3, and Pintsize interrupted in 4.
-
I don't know what "breast articulation seams" are.
It's where the rockets are stored:
I'm pretty sure there was a cimic where someone gets hit in the face with a flying rocket boob. Whether it was this one, I can't remember.
-
I believe it was not this one, though there has been mention of laser tits.

Click on the all-characters list, and you'll see that Cosette and Emily are both included.
-
I giggled at Pintsize, which probably means I am a terrible person.
-
This is just my opinion and I would like to point out that I do not wish to offend anyone but... Daaaaaang!
-
For comic #2333...
1. Well after yet more heavy RL workloads, I missed the latter-half of Emily's lake-house party. Quite a few revelations and funnies there. Rather sad that I missed being able to post about Final Fantasy's Kefka :-( (I am a long-time Final Fantasy follower).
2. Panel #4... Pintsize's expression is both adorable and wickedly funny.
3. Wonder if this strip will actually lead into how Marten & Pintsize contracted together? Rather than being a single-strip gag.
4. It also would be interesting to see how Hannelore contracted with Winslow too.
5. I totally would have seen if I qualified for the "discount program" with my "obtuse metaphor" with the "articulately seamed" sexy-cute robot-lady with glasses, given the oppurtunity :-* .
6. Warning - While you were typing Final Fantasy #14 blew up due to being a crappy product (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39j5v8jlndM). You may wish to review your post.

Whew! Glad to know I'm not the only one who went, like "Meh, why not?".
... as Rayne Summers of LICD-fame said it "I'd f*ck anything once."
Hehe... I just realized Anthro PC Companion Connection abreviates to APCCC (or Aeh Pee Triple-See). All players can control coincidences.
-
And here I am, so freakin' inured to Pintsize, that I'm more worried about this being a RetCon instead of a backstory.
-
I think I saw that particular movie. The ending is particularly unsatisfying, the character development is quite under developed and the camera work leaves you wanting.
-
Anyone else have mixed feelings about Pintsize getting some character development? Stagnation is bad, but if there's nothing to replace the weirdness created by the old Pintsize, the strip will be lamentably more vanilla.
I find this little bit of Pintsize (squeezed somewhere between the porn, the "video drivers" and the low-to-mid-scale property damage) to be an interesting insight into his world. If you think about it, this little bit of sanity is needed so that we can better appreciate the porn, the "video drivers" and the low-to-mid-scale property damage.
On the comic: Pintsize. That face. My face hurts from laughing too much!
-
I get the feeling that the truth is that Pintsize was the unwanted AI. You, know, kinda like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree, or Herbie the Love Bug.
-
I like how Marten's hair is floopy in the flashback. I might be imagining it but I think he's slightly skinnier too.
Also another person laughing hard over the Pintsize face in the last panel.
-
I like how Marten's hair is floopy in the flashback. I might be imagining it but I think he's slightly skinnier too.
[ ... ]
Well... it's a flashback. So I'd say he's just younger.
And now that I've said that I hear your a-typical porn music when my eyes reach the fourth panel. (Weird enough with a sort of "digitalizing" distortion element in it ... )
Btw... what's the word for this kind of filth? We have homoerotic, heteroerotic... cyberrotic?
-
I like how Marten's hair is floopy in the flashback.
Even so, it's more like his present style than what he was sporting in the early comics before Faye cut it for him.
-
OH GOD WHY WOULD SHE HAVE ARTICULATION SEAMS ON HER BOOBS
Easy, she exchanges her usual boobs for a bigger version every time she has a male customer. That way, he's more likely to spend more! It's science!
-
If AnthroPCs come with that function, then I'm fairly sure the world of Jeph has a hugely declining birth rate.
/end obligatory poke fun at Japan joke
-
I just saved myself from spilled hot coffee by setting down my cup one second before seeing the forth panel.
Now I wonder if we'll enter into a rambling, speculative conversation about intimate relations between humans and anthro's.
-
I enjoy this little peek into the world of Pintsize. And that face! OMG.
-
I like how Marten's hair is floopy in the flashback.

1) This is two years *before* those strips.
2) Compare hair:

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1601
-
I guess. I was thinking of this style which appeared in this comic (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=68) and lasted until this one (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=202).
-
I believe it was not this one, though there has been mention of laser tits.
In relation to Raven. Something about a horrible cybernetic abomination with laser tits.

This day's comic is not tracking for me. I get there's a flashback, that pre-story Marten is visiting the cyber version of match dot con, that the cousin of Metropolis Maria seems to be getting all naughty-librarian on Marten, but why is present-day Marten looking with murder, and Momo 2.0 looking with shock and ugh, at Pintsize?
Was it something he said?
Is it, as has been intimated, that Naughty-Librarian-Bot is Pintsize in an earlier chassis?
The 3-4 gutter is fraught with meaning, mystery and frustration for me. I can but wait for Tuesday, or beyond.
-
My understanding is that the "flashback" is Pintsize's telling of the story.
Which isn't what actually happened, based on Marten's reaction.
-

I like that interpretation, but the main thing keeping me away from it is Pintsize's "squee"-ing face in P4. (That face was even funnier in the blueline sketch, BTW; I caught a bit of the LiveStream).
-
Oh, God. That Pintsize face is exactly what I needed to start my day off. :-D

In panel 4 Pintsize takes over Marten's narration of what transpired in the office of APCCC and puts his usual spin on it. I don't know the word for that but it's happening a lot in recent television series... °O
-
I didn't get this. Is it a flashback he's remembering, or is Pintsize making up a story?
-
I didn't get this. Is it a flashback he's remembering, or is Pintsize making up a story?
YES.
*snerk* I shall now pontificate on how I interpret it after a couple ...... okay, a dozen scan troughs before coming to the forums.
As was pointed out in earlier posts, it started as a flashback. Then pintsize interjected with his version of what happened next.
You know that, more than likely, you could and would do the same thing when someone is telling a story that you are both intimately familiar with, and know just exactly when to step in with a few choice words to mess with everyone.
[wow that is one runon stream of semiconsciousness. Should insert punctuation or rewrite it though. nah.]
-
I didn't get this. Is it a flashback he's remembering, or is Pintsize making up a story?
I'm a bit torn between two options:
1) Panels 2,3 and 4 Pintsize is telling a story, panel 4 is obviously typical Pintsize
2) Panels 2 and 3 Marten is telling about how he came to the office, and then Pintsize interrupts and keeps on telling the story, as told in panel 4, totally making Marten mad, and Momo scandalized.
Either way, the beginning of the story is somewhat believable, and panel 4 is just a joke by Pintsize.
I saw earlier in the thread that someone told about "shirt discontinuity"
I would not be surprised that Jeph's initial intention would have been to use the discontinuity as a clue that the infringin panel was a spin off the initial thread, indicating that panels 2 and 3 were Marten's and panel 4 Pintsize's. But I haven't seen such discontinuity, since it is also claimed in the thread that such discontinuity has been "fixed".

Just like how Claire helped Clinton tell how he lost his hand ...

Excellent example! And the reactions are almost identical, too!

Found it, it begins here:

If Panel 4 doesn't make it into the QC Captions, I'll be disappointed.
-
1) Panels 2,3 and 4 Pintsize is telling a story, panel 4 is obviously typical Pintsize
No, if Pintsize was telling it, then we'd start at panel 3 (would be then panel 2), go to panel 4 (now panel 3), and the 4th panel would've been something......that can't be described as it would violate the unwritten rule of shipping on these forums. Or he'd just skip to the punchline and start at panel 4.

I'm starting to wonder how Marigold afforded Momo in the first place. How much does a webmaster make?
-
Really enjoying the Pintsize/Momo dynamic now that he's shown himself to be (or at least is representing himself as) "senior" to Momo (or at least more experienced) in the "being a friend to people" business
-
How much does a webmaster make?
Well... If she is in charge of: Design, updates, code, and everything else.... enough to pay half of the department's rent, and sustain her otaku supplies.
Also, i'm sure her father gives her a little extra :-) .
-
Aww man. I go archive searching for exactly that comic and then not one but two people talk about it.
Here is it anyway. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2305) You're fucking welcome.

very very good point...

Just wanna pop in and place a bet that this will end with Pintsize being thrown out. He goes on an off-screen adventure on par with Wil's and faces serious character development.
(If I'm right, this will be epic. If I'm wrong, it gives you guys something to ponder for a moment. Win-win for me.)

Ask any question, get stupid answers........

Marigirl is not rich enough to take the price of a Platinum Deluxe chassis (http://questionablecontent.net/2001) in stride. She can afford a car, but doesn't have a house, but that might simply be from never getting around to house shopping.
-
Running one website is not necessarily a super well paying job. Freelancing as a web admin to a bunch of small companies could be more lucrative though and is the sort of job that can be doe without a physical presence at the place of 'work' as long as someone else is doing the hardware side.

Jumping spiders: pretty cute, unless they are the size of a small car, sentient, machine gun and mortar equipped, and prone to philosophizing.
Naw, even then they're pretty damn adorable.

I think the spider's tone of voice would make all the difference.
Awww, thanks!
That would also be my reaction to a cartoonish giant spider being reassuring to me. A realistic giant spider, on the other hand...probably a muffled "thank you" from me curled in the fetal position on the far side of the room.
-
There is no anarchophobia in the QC world, it seems.
About Skyrim, I have no anarchophobia, but huge insects on the screen, JUCK !!!!
-
!
Are there no other Exile/Avernum players here?! :o
-
I would have said, station wagon.
Specifically, Volvo 245.
-
At least the stress monitor spider didn't use its spinnerets to shoot out a stress monitor (or worse, an EEG web)...
Jumping spiders: pretty cute, unless they are the size of a small car, sentient, machine gun and mortar equipped, and prone to philosophizing.
Naw, even then they're pretty damn adorable.
Who doesn't love those Tachikoma? Even the Major had a bit of a soft spot for them...
-
Is that a tarantula?
Already been kinda mentioned, but that looks more like a jumping spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_spider) to me. And yeah, my initial reaction would been :-o at the unexpectedness of seeing an ArachnoPC. Then once I recovered I'd be like "Cool!"
No doubt arachnophobic people would run screaming out of that office at that point.

Pintsize's comment has me wondering: If an AnthroPC can "rewrite memories" like that, does that make them unreliable in criminal cases? Or are they easily hackable? What would stop someone from using one as a trojan horse into secret facilities or use in a crime?
-
Is that a tarantula?
Your concern seems quantifiable.

I don't think he meant it literally. It might've just been the robot version of "that's how I remember it" or "that's what I was told". It's "headcanon" which isn't exactly like "hardcoding". ... See what I did there?
If they COULD ... I guess using a non-sentient programmed robot as an accomplice would be much less complicated.
And easily hackable... isn't that what humans already are? :D
(Oh wait... this is the QC forums, right? CUE THE HYPERBOLIC DISCUSSION ABOUT THE ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF ... of ... SELF-BRAINWASHING! Damn, that doesn't work.)

Thanks, but no. Much as live spiders don't phase me (thanks to marrying a pet shop owner), I think that any normally small critter now the size of a small dog and robotic that suddenly drops down from the ceiling and talks, might get a similar response to Marty's.
Or the generous application of a baseball bat.

Headcanon pretty much means "That's what I choose to think what happened. (regardless if that's true or not)"

Don't be nervous. There are no wrong answers.

But you will get "retired" if your answer is unsatisfactory.

I was about to say that a paperless society is about as likely as a paperless toilet, but I just found out that the latter has been invented in Japan, so who knows.
Invented? Paperless toilets have been in use for centuries...
Jeph, unlike Masamune Shirow with the tachikoma, gave his creation the correct number of legs for a spider. I wonder if the shock of being ambushed by a robo-spider is the real test, and the questionnaire is just a distraction.

I had that thought... but what would that prove as far a social qualifications go? That you can cope with your assigned anthro-PC looking like a salticidae?
-
I think its just a case where robots/droids/etc just wouldnt get the human reaction.
And yeah spiders are no insects, since insects have 6 legs and spiders have 8 ... but meh, I still call them "insects" all the time.
-
I'm curious as to whether non-standard/animal-style chassis are available for companion AnthroPCs. It doesn't seem to be that much of a stretch, considering that we've already seen a sentient toaster (not to mention that Winslow's chassis barely qualifies as humanoid either).
-
I would be (and am) terrified of a corgi size robot spider, regardless of its colour scheme or comforting words.
Although I've always associated Portal turrets with spiders, or maybe some kind of crab, for no real reason and they're pretty fun.

Pintsize was wearing Faye's underwear on his head very early on, though that's not quite the same thing.

Thought which has been bugging me for the past couple of days, and I just realised specifically why - BoyfriendBot was a prototype humanform AnthroPC in the early 1000s, where Marten & Faye were surprised at the idea of humanoid APCs (http://questionablecontent.net./view.php?comic=1011). And yet, despite having an (apparently) metal case, the APC3 "sales lady" seems very advanced in that light.
PS: Whatever happened to Pintsize's (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=739) friends (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=427)?

Someone already said but yeah, both were said between the games. I also debated "Are you still there?" I would love a turret Anthro-PC, although it would need to be able to walk which would probably be really creepy looking.

I was wondering the same thing about the sales lady but couldn't think of how to explain my thought and you handily remembered BoyfriendBot. Based on Momo's chasis and the sales-people there, maybe they're just advancing very quickly or at least are still not too common in public.
-
Does seem to be a discontinuity, dunnnit? I choose for the moment to resolve it by assuming Faye and Marten meant fully ... functional ... humaniform AnPCs.
-
SalesLadyBot is yes, bigger, than Pintsize but it looks like she has a fixed mouth, certainly less fixed than Pintsize's.
Marten's reaction to BoyfriendBot was more muted than Faye's... a careful reading of his lines from that arc doesn't necessarily exclude his having interacted with something like SalesLadyBot. I think BoyfriendBot's innovations over SalesLadyBot's are in the skin and articulability(?) of the mouth (shown when Winslow inhabits him).
Not sure about SpiderInterroBot.
-
Eh. To me at least, the simpler answer is retroactive change, don't worry it too much. Certainly the role of AI characters in the setting has rather changed (for the better I'd say) from Jeph's initial writing.
Though I do understand that trying to shoehorn things in as gently as possible can be a fun pastime.

"BoyfriendBot" appears also in 1997. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1997) So add that to the wild mass guessing.
-
But that's a commercial bot for sale. Maybe boyfriend bot was his prototype?
-
What I find totally adorable (and makes me want it in real life more) is that the SpiderPC believes that Marten's nervousness is about the questionnaire.
I know that I'm just explaining the joke, but it's what adds to an already ludicrous amount of adorableness here. It's almost a critical mass of Awwwwwww. If it was holding a kitten, it'd be weapon's grade and we'd all be doomed.
-
Does seem to be a discontinuity, dunnnit? I choose for the moment to resolve it by assuming Faye and Marten meant fully ... functional ... humaniform AnPCs.
If you mean in the Lt. Cmdr. Data sense, BoyfriendBot's "functionality" was "a feature to be implemented at a later date" per #1011.

Surely a humanoid robot that has at least human-level balance, walking speed and arm/hand articulation is more of a challenge than a moving mouth as Pintsize has. I mean, BFB doesn't even have a properly human-like face, so that's well into the realms of present-day animatronics.
i.e., BFB is basically SLB's body (in male form) + Pintsize's face. And yet is a bleeding-edge prototype two+ years later.
"BoyfriendBot" appears also in 1997. (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1997) So add that to the wild mass guessing.
Well, if he was JEC's "latest prototype" in #1010, being on-sale some time later - especially given the advances to Momo II-level - that works well enough since QCtime has accelerated a lot since the early days, where the first 1000 strips took something like two months.
-

anarchophobia is a great word.
"The US, filled with anarchophobia, is determined to nail Assange's hide to the wall."

Assuming an AI could run for President, would they have to be 35 years old? If so, does that refer to the AI or their current body? Also, would they have to be programmed (or at least activated for the first time) in America?
-
Something that I meant to say earlier but didn't: when I read the line "it's my headcanon and you should respect that," my immediate thought was that Jeph must have been reading tumblr again.
-
Oh god comic... this is probably one of my favourites. It would seem as though pintsize has always been a problem child then.

Gordon's head: "It's a problem child, but this young boy can save him :3 ...probably ._. "

He's my favorite ArachnoPC.

Careful Marten, the Premiums are gonna be a bitch.

Actually, we only see SellingRobotFräulein xalk in Pintsize's fantasy. Since he is quite unreliable a narrator, she could be a trunk with arms propped up on a chair, just to make the customer at ease. Until a tarantula settles on her/his head, at least.
(killed a giant Frostbite Spider in Markarth yesterday... Coudn't help but compare.)
-
my head
please get off it.
-
For that matter, there must be exceptions to all sorts of age requirements for AIs. Momo, for example, can legally hold a job even though she's less than three years old.
-
Yes, but working ages aren't in the Constitution.
-
For some reason, I read Gordon's lines with a Tachikoma's voice in my head...
-
I didn't realize until recently, but I don't seem to do the whole "voices" that a lot of people do when I read things. Now I feel like I'm missing out. (Exceptions of course if I've already associated a voice with the character. For example, I started reading the books after I started reading the show, so when I read the Song of Ice and Fire books, Tyrion sounds like Peter Dinklage).
-
Hm. Spiderbot on Marten's head ==> Spiderbot named Gordon ==> Half-Life protagonist named Gordon ==> Half-Life contains vaguely arachnoid nightmare fuel called headcrabs ==> headcrabs get on your head and make you forever sad zombie.
Ergo Marten is about to become a zombie.

I might buy one just to freak out my wife  . What? No other guy here messes with their wife/girlfriend using fake bugs or rodents? Or real ones even?
As to the comic, looks like Marten's going to end up arachnophobic by the time the interview is over. He's also too distracted to notice the warning signs that he's about to end up with a real problem child of an AnthroPC (which might be Gordon's Plan!).
-
Oh my goodness, Gordon is freaking adorable. I require more Gordon at once.

It might be more efficient to have results and other important forms emerge from a printer slot on the desk (or, you know, on the laptop screen or just downloaded directly your robot mind) but it would not be as funny as a robot claw delivering a piece of paper from the ceiling.
No wonder the little three-eyed aliens worshiped The Claw.
I'm reminded of a forgettable 1970s sitcom, "Holmes and Yoyo," in which John Schuck played a robot police detective whose investigative skills included pressing his nose to cause himself to take a Polaroid photo which emerged from his shirt pocket. Yoyo being an advanced model, it was an SX-70 print.
-
Haha... the way she squeezes the paper and the look on her face when she says "THAT one?!" makes me wonder if she's had a run in with Pintsize some time ago... it would certainly make that reaction understandable. :-D
Wonder if he got her the same present he got Momo for christmas once...
-
I wonder if the chassis he had at the start of the comic was his first.
-
You asking that makes me hope he was some sort of hovering metal butt. And then Marten refused to take him home until he was put in a decent chasis. And naturally, they complied because hey, it means they get rid of Pintsize (and Pintsize is cool with this because it means he gets a new place and person to mess with).
-

She could buy the chassis in an Apple Store, but the test purpose it's to find an ideal companion AI (no body).

Congratulations! You can be proud to be the catalyst for my first released render!
Yup, that's two bluish metal spheres, a couple of lights and 30 seconds in MS Paint. How does one make a hovering butt on its own? It kinda needs legs...
-
I can think of no canon on the subject, but Marten was probably not in a position to by an upgrade unless absolutely necessary.
-
99.96% accurate. That means Marten is the lucky 2,500th customer.
Oh, and there definitely IS canon: he had to sell his guitar, remember?
-
Now here's a speculation. What if he adopted Pintsize before the Vicki breakup?
It's more likely a priori that he'd have a need for company after the breakup rather than before, but what if Pintsize caused the breakup?
-
The breakup happened before either of them left Cali; just no-one bothered to tell Marten….
-
...I want a Gordon plushie...
-
It seems that if there's an interval of QC being dramatic, something really weird happens.
Comedic relief!

The Corps is Father
-
Or maybe Gordon factored Marten's fear of giant robotic spiders into account (it can't be that uncommon, after all :P ) and then gave him Pintsize as a foil?
Clearly Marten's never going to get anywhere if his companion is someone who just agrees with him all the time. Especially not if they were both trying to be passive and accommodating.
... :psyduck:
-
Agreeing with this, there are too many people with that fear for them not to put that into the equation.
Plus, who else would have been able to put up with Pintsize anus-ing the bathroom walls?
-
... or it indicates Gordon was just as tired of Pintsize as RobotMatchMakerLady, and the biometrics report actually read, "Sucker!"
But, no, Pintsize would not have survived otherwise. Faye's not the only hot chick with a killer throwing arm.
-
Interesting... so Pintsize wasn't matched to Marten's needs, but rather Marten was chosen to be good for Pintsize?
That actually explains a lot...
-
Pintsize doesn't consider the Pugnacious Peach to be a "hot chick"?
-
why does a robot lady need to work on a laptop computer?
-
What keeps bugging me about the current storyarc is that Marten actually bought Pintsize BEFORE THE SINGULARITY.
And we already got told he simply went into a store and bought one of the new AnthroPCs.
I like the old version more than the new version presented now, because the current version tries to fix what was never wrong.
-
Retconning is messy.
But it seems Mrten would have known that Gordon threw a wrench in the system. Of course, it could be that Marten is pulling Momo and Pintsize's leg...
Although if you pull Pintsize's leg, it comes off.
-
Grammar question: on the sign behind the test administering robot in the recent comics, "robots are your friend!" vs. "robots are your friends!"
The number (singular vs plural) should agree, so "robots are your friend" is wrong; if you want to indicate that one robot can be your friend, something like "a robot is your friend" or even "every robot is a friend" would do it.
Depending on context, "robots are your friends" can be taken two ways - either all robots are everybody's friends, or each robot is a friend to somebody; hmm, maybe I'm stretching the point a bit there.
-
US and UK speakers can differ on what should be treated as a plural in some cases.
UK: "The press say ..."
US: "The press says ..."
"Robots" should be unambiguous, however.
-
Yes - collective nouns like "the press" can be tricky; but I would say that "the press says" is correct, and "the press say" is incorrect - in the UK just as in the US.
-
So....can AnthroPc's be arrested or "deprogrammed" for sexual harassment?

So....can AnthroPc's be arrested or "deprogrammed" for sexual harassment?
Good question, similarly...huh would new drivers or things that might alter personality be considered brainwashing or personality death?
I did like the end bit, it felt very in character for both Pintsize and Marten
-
Well, Jeph said that there's a Robot Jail (here (http://jephjacques.com/post/36916574776/qa-dump-56))
Also, i think the AI assigned as a companion is more a complement of the "owner" than someone like him/her (Momo has some social interaction data, or something like that).
-
I just view them as our plastic pals who are fun to be with.

As far as the the robocounseller using a computar goes I would magine AIs in service positions do things to make humans confortable that they themselves wouldn't need to do. Humans might find it a bit uncomfortable to have someone they were talking to suddenly "blank out" for a noticeable length of time as they accessed a computer link.

As far as the the robocounseller using a computar goes I would magine AIs in service positions do things to make humans confortable that they themselves wouldn't need to do. Humans might find it a bit uncomfortable to have someone they were talking to suddenly "blank out" for a noticeable length of time as they accessed a computer link.
...unless a little "BRB" shows up in each eye.

Yeah, she can plug into a USB port and all, but she does still get input via her sensory modules.

I can dig it, though I'm actually sort of the opposite: I like this much better than the old version.
I'm also an Asimov fan, to be fair though. Not exactly unbiased when it comes to robots and AI.
-
To take things waaaaay too seriously for a second, I kind of like the idea that Marten and Pintsize should never have been paired up. It means they became friends the old fashioned way -- by getting to know one another (and sharing a love of porn?) -- rather than because they were a perfect biometric match. It makes the friendship seem much more genuine and less contrived. It also explains why a relatively reserved guy like Marten has an AnthroPC with such an outlandish, over-the-top personality.
-
OTOH, the biometric pairing helps explain why an introvert with low self esteem was paired with an anthro PC that has a social protocol database...
-
Emily needs to adopt Gordon.
-
Emily needs to adopt Gordon.
IF she didn't already :-) We don't know too much about her personal life.
Also, maybe in that moment, Pintsize was the right choice for Marten.
-
Interesting... so Pintsize wasn't matched to Marten's needs, but rather Marten was chosen to be good for Pintsize?
That actually explains a lot...
As in "anything would be better than this spider on my head ... get it off and replace it with any other AI... ANY OTHER ONE!"
-
Emily needs to adopt Gordon.
Hahaha, yesss.
>Emily goes into the room with the test
>Gordon comes down
>"Ooooooh, I want that one!"
>"But that isn't how..."
>"Pleeeeeeease?"

Hell, I could see Emily wearing Gordon on her head all the time... and liking it.

Maybe the robot matchmaking service is legally required to have a laptop under the Americans with Disabilities Act in case they hire a human or someone else lacking a data link.
-
K1dmor: You saw that too, hm?
On another tack: it would make sense that more people would have AnthroPC companions than there already are in the strip. Emily would be a prime candidate, though she apparently still lives at home with her parents.
You do have to wonder why there aren't more APC's running around in the cast.
-
Oh, and for those of you who've just tuned in, you might want to keep something in mind about robot storylines from the boss himself:
Like I said, every time I try to do a robot-centric story, it almost immediately veers back into human-centric stuff. OH WELL
-
Maybe the robot matchmaking service is legally required to have a laptop under the Americans with Disabilities Act in case they hire a human or someone else lacking a data link.
A shared interface with humans might also be the explanation for the robotic arm delivering a piece of paper (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2335), or perhaps that is to provide hardcopy as a "take away" for robo-adopters. I wonder if the robo-lady can do this:
Since Jeph has introduced an arachnobot, how about other possibilities? A robo-dragonfly perhaps?
-
You do have to wonder why there aren't more APC's running around in the cast.
Aren't there several that are semi-recurring though? I thought the ones that were supervised by Hanners during that one party, the one's observing the VespAvenger incident, and the ones involved in Pintsize's annual trip to mexico were probably the same ones. Though they seem to serve the purpose of filler-ish roles in the cast, really.

AnthroPCs seem to be a high-risk "purchase". Consider the library and morgue AnthroPCs, not just Pintsize. Perhaps people avoid them unless they have a painful gap in their social life with humans.
Why hasn't Hannelore downloaded a social protocol database for Winslow?
-
Why hasn't Hannelore downloaded a social protocol database for Winslow?
1. Winslow is almost never with her when she's socialising
2. She has a therapist for that
3. Dad never needed one
3a. Nor did mom, come to think of it
4. It's been submitted but the approval hasn't come through yet
5. There's a SPIDER on my HEAD!

Because deep down, they know Aquaman is just biding his time. Waiting for his opportunity to shine. And they are afraid. Very afraid.

This option suggests to me that Marten got Pintsize while still in California; perhaps that's why Vicky left (yes, I know that doesn't really fit).
-
Perhaps the whalebot is what he would have been allocated if he had never left California. No heartbreak, no roborachnophobic trauma, no Pintsize. Later he'd have moved to Hawaii, picked up a gig playing slack-key guitar, and settled down with a nice girl like Kono Kalakaua (http://static.tvfanatic.com/images/gallery/kono-kalakaua-picture.jpg)...
Having read the Wikipedia page about Slim Jims, and followed the links to some of their ingredients, I feel slightly ill.

For those of you just joining us, the last poll of the week on the WCDT usually is a poll on what the "Moment of the Week" was in the strip.
It hasn't been used much as of late due to two key factors:
1. The moment of the week was so obvious, it wasn't even up for a vote; and
2. The OP of the WCDT didn't have time to go through and come up with options.
Yes, the poll does tend to get a bit long (do the maths: five strips, four panels, 20 possible "moments").
-
But not every moment can be a "moment of the week." To paraphrase "The Incredibles", "If everything is super, nothing is."
My biggest chuckles were the "Discount program", and "I better explain the following policies..."
-

I went for the mundane " ... the rest is history" -option as MOTW. Having scrolled down to the third panel of Thursday's strip I was half expecting Marten and Pintsize to hug in the last panel. Ok, I knew we were gonna get something like Pintsize's remark in the last panel. But, really, Marten thinks of him as a best friend. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=268)

What I wanna know is: Is that Martens fantasy or Pintsizes?
Or Fayes??
-
I wonder if AI Whales and AI-controlled nuclear submarines ever talk? Maybe that's why submarine AIs eventually go into sales.
-
Having read the Wikipedia page about Slim Jims, and followed the links to some of their ingredients, I feel slightly ill.
Growing up with them as a common thing does not make it any better.
-
What I wanna know is: Is that Martens fantasy or Pintsizes?
Or Fayes??
Is it even a fantasy or is it a glimpse at what really could have been reality? I mean maybe Marten was destined to be a whale-throPC trainer?
If it is a fantasy, however, I imagine it's Marten's. He has kind of a thoughtful/daydream-y look on his face in the second to last panel. Pintsize's fantasy would involve either more butts or the hot chick he said he could have been with last comic. And that's way to peaceful to be something Faye imagines... I'm not sure she's capable of that.
-
A couple days late saying this, but the page of Gordon on Marten's head absolutely cracked me up. It's not like I haven't been enjoying the comic or anything, but this was the peak of hilarity that I've had for quite some time (at a guess probably at least since the Station visit). Combined with Monday's strip this has definitely been a good week.
-
Robot whale... fuck yeah. Amazing. :D
-
So, if that actually had happened, would that be a jumping the shark moment? Is a robot whale more or less awesome than a shark?
-
Robot whale... fuck yeah. Amazing. :D
Why call him a robot whale when he is clearly a CetaPC?
-
Don't you have to see evidence of a long decline in quality before you can trace back to a moment you can identify as a shark-jump? I don't think a shark-jump can be identified contemporaneously.
Besides, I think the term, like most superlatives in either direction, is misused in these days of critical evaluation devolving into whether something is a "win" or a "fail" (the current version of "rules" vs. "sucks").
-
I agree. Like numbering world wars, it's something that can only be done properly in retrospect.
It's December 7th. I had to work that in somewhere! :P
-
As for MOTW I voted for the discount program only because I couldn't vote for Pintsize's expression after telling that story. I'd likely vote for that for moment of the year.

Bravo, de_la_Nae, bravo indeed! The look on Marten's face and stance in that last panel says it all, really.

I just realized something.
We have been secretly trolled by Jeph.

True story from the world of work.
I started my manufacturing career in a plastic factory. They did injection-molding of very complex mechanical parts... out of "Long Glass Fiber" materials such as Amodel and Isoplast. Exotic stuff, not your typical throw-away plastic materials.
We built a mold to manufacture a hub/housing/seal part for a major corporation. Engineering determined that in order to get maximum reinforcement from the "Long glass fiber" the plastic had to flow into the center of the part and radiate outward. This was called "center gating" and is normal for plastic molding.
Problem is the dead center of the part is where the shaft for the pump-driver went. This meant that we had to use a special "end mill" style cutting tool to add the critical-to-function feature back into the part.
Again, not a big deal, this kind of thing is normal in production.
This hole... was also a sealing surface, no fluid could leak around the driver-shaft. So it was determined that a skilled machinist (ahem, me) should perform the task.
Well it worked and we won the contract bid. Major Corporation loved our parts and our solution... and promptly doubled the order then tripled it again...
In order to keep up, one of the managers took a look at my Bridgeport Style Turret Milling Machine and declared it a "fancy drill-press." He then decided that it was too expensive to have a machinist do the "drilling" (in reality "milling").
His solution... he bought a drill-press sight unseen from a salvage yard. Got it in-house, the drive-shaft was bent so the drill-chuck wobbled real bad. On top of that it was much too fast, and there was no down-rate control.
Long story short, we managed to get the order done, but all of the parts were rejected for cracking and chipping on the seal-surface... that is the ones where the shaft hole were centered correctly... I think out of the thousands we made only a handful were even on center.
We lost the contract.
So, long story short... A cheap drill press can do major harm... there is a difference between a drill and a mill, and skilled machinists produce better parts than unskilled labor-minions.

did the decision maker lose his job, or otherwise suffer professionally in any way?

Gordon was probably reassigned to a less difficult task.
Like becoming a moderator for 4chan.
-
Point of order - Marten could never have afforded a whale chassis!
-
Oh, but it's not as expensive as you may think! The AI is actually the same level as an actual whale.
-
Present the financing the right way, and you can convince anybody they can afford anything.
No, I'm not going to rant about the U.S. mortgage bubble.
But you shoulda seen the guy at the Cleveland Air Show one year try to show me how I, on a newspaper salary and a small newspaper salary at that, could swing the financing on a brand-new, $600,000 Cirrus lightplane. The Blue Angels had nothing on this guy's maneuvering.
Maybe you can lease the whale chassis for two years? Or it's a timeshare among several AIs and their owners companion humans?
-

The way these things work is that the employee gets in trouble for pointing out in advance that it's a mistake ("not a team player"!), then gets in trouble after the fact for not having pointed out that it was a mistake.

Jeph has hinted that Winslow is content with his current chassis, but I bet something more cat-resistant would be tempting.

Eve is… not exactly standard equipment. In fact she's practically unique and, if Jeph wants to go that way, could well turn out to be one of the original AIs that sparked the A-PC industry, her AI core being built around a cluster of, IIRC, stock G5 chips, a modified copy of OSX, and some custom hardware which may or may not have included living neural tissue….
She also has integrated weapons that make Pintsize and his laser look like a baby with a water pistol.
I very much doubt there's an Adam model out the waiting for Winslow to come along and inhabit.

He was driven out of his job by a series of malicious pranks and deliberate attempts to make him look extremely bad in front of the owner. Wasn't hard to do.

At that point the job was no longer the responsibility of the machine-shop and was fully the responsibility of the production area. So aside from declaring it a "piece of shit" I had nothing further to do with it.

Anyone else want to see a quadcopter AnthroPC?
Flying Winslow would be cute as hell. Flying Pintsize would be terrifying in its implications. One imagines a Predator drone sent to confront him, doing the General Atomics airframe of a slow headshake and saying, "Dude."
Also, for an OrnithoPC, I'm thinking less of a Mario Bros. propeller beanie and more of ears-turning-into-helicopter-blades, a la Snoopy (with Woodstock as pilot). Or, you know, Robo-YB.
