Come to think of it, why do English speakers use "from" in reference to someone's home? Logically "from" should mean your next-to-last location.

Schleswig-HolsteinThat is where I'm from, too! I moved south to go to university, but I love coming home again during the summer. I mean, most people (in Germany - possibly different in places like Australia) cannot go to the beach whenever they want, but when you live in Schleswig-Holstein, you can even get to two different seas with a two-hour drive at most. From my home, the nearest beach is half an hour away and my best friend lives practically on the beach. I love that.

Fury, you're only about an hour and a half from me!Yeppers! I noticed that, too.
... "Middle East" is a weird term, just because it changes a little bit depending on who uses it, I've come to understand it as southwest Asia, but some people include bits of Africa in the region.
and bordering on Egypt to the south (Africa)Oh, I know. I went down to Eilat while I was in Israel, just a few kilometers from Egypt. Interestingly enough though, the part of Egypt (the Sinai Peninsula) is part of Asia! (I'm sure you know this already but I thought it was interesting so it's for the rest of the thread).
LOC EN80SB (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Locator_System).According to this thingy linked from the Wiki article (http://www.levinecentral.com/ham/grid_square.php), I'm at LOC EM15GE.
Also, just last weekend I drove past Northampton twice. (Was going to TDIFest in Newry, ME, and decided to not take the most direct route, instead going I-70 to PA-66 to PA-22 to I-99 to I-80 to I-81 to I-84 to I-91 to I-93 to US-2. Remind me to not do that long of a drive, solo, again.)

Western Canada (deep in Hippie Country). My town's so isolated you need to take a 40 minute boat ride and then drive for an hour to get there. And it's on the mainland. The mall has an astounding 10 shops, 3 of which are old rich ladies clothes.
then I take it you're NOT a native.
OBX = the Outer Banks of NC. Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk....
If you're south of Raleigh, then you're in the SandHills.
I greatly miss the land of my birth and people.
"Ah'm a Tarheel born and a Tarheel bred. And when Ah die: I'll be a Tarheel. Dead."
The university I work at has stolen that song and replaced "Tarheel" with "Sooner." :psyduck:Mountains? Piedmont? Capitol? Sandhills? or OBX?Uhh, I have no idea what OBX stands for... But more eastern the mountain anyting, and south of the Capital.

I know European geography by heart and yet I'm still not sure howany provinces there are in Canada (10??) Or how they fit together.

I lived for 3 years when I was young in one of the most northerly towns in Ontario. Probably only one city over 10,000 within 3 hours drive. Of course, it was on the trans Canada, so it was still accessible.Sudbury? Or was it further north than that?
Härnösand or Sweden itself? I really wish there was a way I could clarify your jokey statement without sounding horrible, but there ya go

and I 'm ashamed to admit that I know much more about local geography than about the rest of the world. I've travelled a lot in my own country, and been as far in Europe as Ireland, Switzerland, Eckernförde or den Haag, but my notions on canadian geography for example are a bit rudimentary...Why should you be ashamed? I find it natural that anyone would be most knowledgeable in the geography of their own area of residence simply because most of your travels will be more or less local. It's easy to drive to the next town to go shopping over the day, it may take some planning to go to a larger city because it's too far away to just drive there and back over a day, and to reach a place further away you might need to fly or spend a long time traveling. Personally, I like to travel but I have barely made it outside of Europe (Asian part of Turkey), though I did pass through Eckernförde on two different occasions...
Central Pennsylvania. And I wish I was almost anywhere else most of the time.Am I allowed to call it Pennsyltucky or can only people who live there call it that?

I'd straight up move there, but my understanding is it's cold as f@*k there about 300 days out of the year.
Welcome, and stuff!
I love living in an area with snow in winter. The nearest indiginous poisonous creature is a hundred miles away, and the changes of seasons are spectacular.

wut. It's weird to see such a small city being mentioned here.
Bleh. I used to live in Florida. 100% humidity and 95 degrees all day every day gets old really quick. Especially when it rains and stays 95 degrees.
I have some friends from my WoW days that live in the South and every time they complain about the 'cold' being 50 degrees, I just cannot help but laugh. I know the differences in climates and tolerances and what you're used to define what you would find 'cold' but it's still one of those things, you know?

I selected 'Eastern Europe' though any self-respecting Moravian will tell you we're in 'Central Europe'.
Where do you draw the line between western and Eastern Europe? Usually I'd say central Europe, but that doesn't exist here.
I think usually the line was drawn by the iron curtain, but that doesn't exist anymore.
for instance Austria can be referred to as Central European, as well as Eastern European or Western European.
We Austrians ...
I do understand, especially towards northern europe, Austria might be considered part of the Balkan region.
We Austrians often see our country as the "gate to the east", so it's basically central europe.
I'm from Poland. Western or Eastern Europe doesn't seem to fit.
Yeah, you're not the first to note that the classification is a bit... outdated.
