Title: Whats your favorite webcomic and why?
Post by: greenMonkey on 09 Jul 2006, 18:16
SeanBateman's 'MWhaling, what do you think of QC' thread in the Fish forum got me thinking about why I like the webcomics I do.  Is it the art, the story, the jokes, the characters, etc.  So, post about your favorite webcomics.

Art-wise, my favorite webcomic is http://www.stuffsucks.com.  I love Liz Greenfield's monochromatic artwork and how it adds to the story and characters.  I also love the style in how she draws the characters and other stuff.

Story-wise...that's tougher.  I love reading through the QC archives, and up to oh, 470, 480, it was probably my favorite comic story-wise.  But something changed after that, and I still love the story, but it's no longer my favorite.  I don't even think the 'someting' was the talk Faye and Marten had, it was something in how the tone and style of the dialogue changed, I think.  Anyway, I found myself being more and more attracted to comics that have set character and snarky dialogue, but perhaps a looser storyline.  I love Pennt Arcade and Ctrl-Alt-Del, as well as Diesel Sweeties and Overcompensating.  i love them for their characters, jokes, stories, and randomness.

Character-wise, QC probably still reigns supreme, but Stuff Sucks is definitely gaining.

As of right now, my favourite is The Perry Bible Fellowship, because it is hilarious.  And the estimable Nicholas Gurewitch deserves a big nod for his fantastic and versatile art style.  That man is like unto a god.

I asked my wiccan friend if he had ever read any of the pbf.  He's like...."Uh....I'm not christian?"

I really like PBF, but I always look forward to my bi-weekly Better Days (http://www.jaynaylor.com/betterdays/).

I really loves me some furry drama comic.

To be perfectly honest, when I first heard of it, I thought it had to do with christianity too.

As a writer, I look for witty, clever dialogue and interesting characters.

For pure entertainment I'd have to say I actually like Indietits more than QC. The punchlines always seem to hit straight on, especially if it's Yelling Bird. Along these same lines, I absolutely love Penny-Arcade. As it goes along, the jokes begin to become more and more intelligent and it's really growing on me. Though, there is always a soft spot in my heart for fruit fuckers.

As for characters, I'd say I enjoy both Something Positive and QC about the same with everyone else trailing behind a ways.

SeanBateman's 'MWhaling....

Sean Bateman of the "Rock n roll, deal with it" variety?  You have a link for this comic?

I'm a big White Ninja (http://www.whiteninjacomics.com) and comet7 (http://www.comet7.com) fan.  Gorgeous art is all well and good, but there's certain brands of comedy that I can't resist.

Also One One Se7en (http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/stuntmutt.html?type=main&image=1) because I'm a huge Bungie fanboy.

What the fuck people? A whole thread on awesome comics and not a single mention of Dominic Deegan? (http://www.dominic-deegan.com)

For shame. Seriously, a webcomic that churns out quality story every day of the week (with a colored strip most sundays), which is now running through one of the best, and most well-written plotlines in a webcomic, and not ONE of you mentions it!

I also enjoy Overcompensating, QC (of course), Girly, and many others addressed in this thread.

Does it just go without saying that everybody reads Something Positive?  'Cause I'm not seeing anybody having said that, and I'd have assumed it'd be pretty common.  Actually, may've gotten shunted over here from there... can't remember.

Girly... I used to read Girly.  Rather, I used to like Girly.  Then Episode 247 happened ("And then, two months passed").  And... too many changes.  Too many characters I just couldn't care about.  Too little wackiness (Michael Bolton, "Why God?  Why are you eating me?", "And a buttplug!") for me... and after Otra went on her knight quest... just quit reading.  A shame, for Girly was great.  But just won't do it for me anymore.

Likewise, Angels 2200's dying on me.  Although, I think it may, like Queen of Wands did, be coming to an end.

Thankfully, Girl Genius is finally getting to its rollicking.

Loserz is good... when it happens.

Alpha-Shade, similarly, I check about once a month.  Although part of that's just to satisfy myself with several pages to read through at once.  I'm not a fan of choppiness.

Shit, people, I am ashamed.

1. Scary Go Round (http://www.scarygoround.com/)

Awesome characters, consistently amusing dialogue and the most insane, random, brilliant situations ever. In Scary Go Round, there are logical progressions which lead to trolls dressed in Seargeant Pepper uniforms battling the undead vampire Beach Boys, Giant Ex-Soviet Robots setting fire to Minotaurs, people moving because of infestations of ninjas keeping them up at night, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. The only criticism is John Allison occasionally seems to get bored with a story or characters and just abandon the crap out of them. This does mean that there are lots of loose ends though. Also, there is a whole chapter set on the Isle of Wight, being plagued by Jimi Hendrix's pet Devil Bear, which makes me happy.

2. Orneryboy (http://www.orneryboy.com/)

Part geek. Part goth. All grouch. Surly Canadian rivethead deals with the problems of everyday life: zombie infestations, voodoo evil, the transformation of his cat into a lovecraftian monstrosity, annoying neighbours, all that jazz. The art is to die for.

3. Cat and Girl (http://www.catandgirl.com/)

So intellectually-elitistly funny. I think the 'Dear Evelyn Waugh' strip actually caused me to rupture some internal organs.

4. Questionable Content

I'm here aren't I?

5. Perry Bible Fellowship
6. Hate Song
7. Nothing Nice to Say
8. VG Cats
9. Daily Bunny
10. The Adventures of Dr. McNinja

I got bored past four, I may come back and make this post proper.

Just a few (not in any particular order)

1) Chugworth Academy (nice avatar back there!)
2) Amelie Belcher's http://www.cordeval.com/
3) Mac hall
4) A Softer World
5) Comics by the Indie artists from the Flight Series (ex. Vera Brosgal, Erika Moen).

blar on chugworth.. blar i say! nothing personal, i just don't like the comic. his art is good though, i'll give him that.

perry bible fellowship, as mentioned, is freakin' hilarious, as well as penny-arcade, dr. mcninja, white ninja, overcompensating, yes yes ofcourse ofcourse...

I really liked Reman Mythology (http://www.felaxx.com/), but she's not updating it currently, got plans to start over. Just beautiful art and neat story. She's currently working on Sorcerers and Secretaries (http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?propertycode=SAS&categorycode=BMG), which is being published by tokyopop. it's good, but I miss Reman Mythology.

I love Penny and Aggie (http://pennyandaggie.com/) for the same reasons, although the story here is decidedly different, more "down to earth" and "real", you know. It's funny and extremely well drawn.

Minus (http://kiwisbybeat.com/minus1.html) is super cool. A Magical girl in our mudane world is how i describe it... The art is great, done in ink and water color from what i can tell, and I have nothing but respect for people that work in traditional mediums.

I find that QC is the only comic I've managed to get addicted to (well, aside from QoW, but the reruns are just making me twitchy). I read a few others but just can't fall in love with them.
Except for White Ninja. White Ninja is fabulous.

QC and Dr. McNinja tie for first place. Penny Arcade and CAD fight it out for second (third?).

And Homestar Runner, of course, except I don't think that counts.

Edit: As to why, both QC and McNinja have storylines which really drag me in, as well as being a fun read. Homestar Runner just clicked perfectly with my sense of humour.

In no particular order -

The Adventures of Dr McNinja (http://www.drmcninja.com/) by Chris Hastings (inks by Kent Archer) because there is nothing that has ever come close to combining all the fun things into a whole that remains fun.
El Goonish Shive (http://www.egscomics.com/) by Dan Shive because I'm addicted to it's Soap Opera-ish story and because it's easy to like the characters.
Shortpacked! (http://www.shortpacked.com/) by David 'Walky' Willis because it's just fucking funny.
Count Your Sheep (http://www.countyoursheep.com/) by Adrian Ramos because it's the cutest thing this side of the Milky Way.
Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire (http://dominic-deegan.com/) by Michael 'Mookie' Terracciano because I love the fantasy setting and the epic stories.
Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes (http://thunt.comicgen.com/) by Tarol Hunt because it has the perfect combination of humor, action, drama and good art.
Applegeeks (http://www.applegeeks.com/) by Mohammad F. Haque and Ananth Panagariya because [same as goblins×2].
Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net/) by Jeph Jaques because of it's solid characters and unpredictability.
Boy Genius (http://www.jennifertanner.com/) by Jennifer Tanner because it's fun to see the Spider-man characters as kids and the jokes are very funny.
Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com) by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins because it's the most insane thing ever.

EDITED WITH THE WHY
Title: Whats your favorite webcomic and why?
Post by: CarbonatedWeasel on 03 Aug 2006, 00:42
I'd have to say my top 5 favorites would be:

1) Penny Arcade.   Its the first webcomic I ever started reading and its about video games so I get a lot of the jokes.  And its usually very clever and smart.

2) Questionable Content.  This would probably be my favorite if I actually was "in" on the indie music jokes.   Too bad all of the webcomics (21deadmonkeys) based on ska dont have compelling story lines, memorable characters and excellent (and ever developing) art style and sentient robots. The progression of the art is amazing, you would swear its not even the same person doing it. I like it so much because I actually found myself relating to the characters and caring about them a little.  Much like a good movie.

3) Scary Go Round.  Its extremely witty,  crazy, and you never can quite guess what is gonna happen next.   Its insane really.  It has more characters than legal and the art style with illustrator is my favorite ever.  Its been okay since he started using hand drawn stuff again but I prefer illustrator.  Nonetheless it is amazing.  Oh, and british!

4) Joe and Monkey.   Its weird how sometimes the strip wont ever really had a definate punchline but it is still really funny.  Some of the most random things I have ever seen has come out of this gem of a webcomic.  How can you compete with the line, "I swear to God monkey, I'll punch you in the face with an airplane"?  Ya cant.

5)  Nothing Nice to Say.  Its punx, quite clearly and I love that about it.  Music jokes that I actually get for the most part.  Sometimes its even to punk for me to get.  But thats alright.   I like to see how the artstyle progressed over time from the beginning to present day.

So there you go, If you managed to get through my unintelligible rambling I applaud you.  Give yourself a nice big pat on the back. You've earned it, Champ.

I disagree, but it's an opinion difference.

SP is a straight humour strip, It's Walky was humour with alot of drama and relationship stuff. It was the "when will they get together?" aspect of IW that hooked me, and I loved the aliens and SEMME and everything.

I had to read it twice to understand it all.

My top comics would probably have to be in this order.

Sluggy Free Lance - Awesome storylines and it's posted everyday
User Friendly - Really Funny Everyday, having worked at an ISP it hits home
Real Life - First webcomic I ever read, got me hooked immediately
Dominic Deegan - Another awsome story line.
Questionable Content - I've only been reading for a few weeks, but the story line as good and the comic is always funny.
Invader Zim - Love the new versions of characters that I already know.
GeekFX Comics - Sprite comic but I like the writing for it.
One Hit Kill - Really funny and the art is pretty good.

I'd list more but the topic was really only asking for 1 and I have more than that already.

i used to read Nothing Nice to Say when i was younger. it was what got me into webcomics but i think i outgrew it or something because i just sort of stopped reading.  but i will always hold that comic in high esteem for getting me into Jawbreaker.

Agreed, SGR is good lately, but what about Sam and Fuzzy? Right now this massive 10-month storyline is just reaching a peak. Last week, (with 3 comics) Sam Logan gave us 3 MASSIVE cliffhangers, each one slightly bigger than the last. The story is amazingly detailed and well planned, and its easy to understand why a forum thread on the topic has stretched to nearly 40 pages.

PBF has taken a severe turn for the worse in the last 4-6 months.

As of this time, I'd say the ones I look forward to the most are SMBC, QC and Dinosaur Comics.

These are my favourites, in no particular order

Something Positive is always funny, and has such brilliant dark humor. Plus, a melting chemo-kitty.

xkcd is great, the arts not meant to be the best, but its always funny

Multiplex is my favorite movie based comic, its funny and there's usually a pay off despite only being a weekly

Elf Only Inn just recently came back after two years, and has been good so far, its kept a good humor, and does a good job of poking fun of internet Role Playing

And, of course, Questionable Content. Its just a great comic all around.

Perry Bible Fellowship is up there, although I agree that it's gone downhill lately.  Still, there's some total gems every month like the Funbot one that was a couple weeks ago.  I laughed really hard at that one.

Dr. McNinja, although that seems to be a common consensus around here.

White Ninja, because it's like Robot Chicken: much funnier when you read it while tired.  Easily one of my favorite comics of all time.

Penny-Arcade, although it's going downhill as well.  The last real gem of theirs was the one where Gabe was trying to say Warhammer was ripping off World of Warcraft and Tycho responds in his over-the-top manner about how he will kill himself, become the god of the dark place of death, and torture Gabe.  "I will open one of my six mouths and sing the song that ends the earth."  Classic.

I saw one person mention it briefly, but I'd like to mention Order of the Stick.  If you're familiar with D&D at all, it's hilarious.  I've been following it for awhile now.

Comical Interlude (http://holterya.livejournal.com/27717.html#cutid1) is my current favourite (non-QC) webcomic at the moment.  It's actually based within Livejournal at the moment, which is pretty ridiculous because it definitely deserves its own website.

It's QC, no question (and no pun intended), This comic introduced me to a way of story telling I had never seen in Webcomics before, sure Penny arcade had some biref story archs, but QC made me see that doing the story I wanted to do, wasn't as stupid as I thought it was.

It's followed closely behind by Sam and Fuzzy and Penny Arcade.

Not any in order of favorite, these are all my favorite:

1. Bleedman and Snafu comics:

Grim Tales From Down Below http://grim.snafu-comics.com/?strip_id=0
Invader Zim: Manifest Doom http://zim.snafu-comics.com/?strip_id=0

Great art and Stories. Bleedman's comics are just damn awesome.

2. Squirrel Works- BattleGate

http://www.squirrelworks.com/zones/battlegate/01.0/p-cover.html

Very interesting story and one of the interesting and cool art styles I've seen

3. Tim Buckley's Ctrl+Alt+Del

http://ctrlaltdel-online.com/

Tim "Absath" Buckley makes such great game comics, it's always a good laugh. He's a great guy.

4. Chris and Kent from The Adventures of Dr. McNInja

http://drmcninja.com/index.html

This has got to be the best comic find I've ever laid my eyes on. The artwork is awesome and the humor gets me everytime. Plus, he's a Doctor, who's a ninja.

5. Scott Sava's The Dreamland Chronicles

http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com/

What art! All in CGI and it works so well! I love it.

6. Mike and Ron from Psuedome' Studio LLC:

Van Von Hunter http://www.vanvonhunter.com/vvh1.html

VVH, so good for a laugh, good storyline too.

7. Alpha Shade

http://alpha-shade.com/www/index2.htm

By far, one of the best storyline I've seen, espcailly in their first chapter. Also, the vector art is great.

8. Oh course, Jeph for Questionable Content =)

Can't go without a day with remembering the one the first webcomics I fallen in love with

9. And lastly, Scott who makes VG Cats

Leo and Aeris, nuff said.

Something Positive - Very first webcomic I ever read. The dark humor sucked me in, and the characters made be stay.

White Ninja and Dr McNinja - Ninja comics for the WIN

Shortpacked! - I must admit I haven't read It's Walky! though. But even though I don't get all the toy jokes, this comic is simply uproariously funny.

Bigger than Cheeses: Juvenile humor at it's best.

something positive was introduced to me during my senior year of high school at my old military school. i can tell you just reading about fictional frustration was enough to not make me go batshit insane. kind of like...my mother is.

then it was bob the angry flower..then questionable content, sinfest, ctrl alt delete (its humiliating when you are in a room full of people and you're crying from stifling your laughter too hard), then it was chopping block (but LAH never fucking UPDATES.), mmm dr. mcninja, some other obscure ones i can't remember, and recently, xkcd, pbf, one-liners, etc. etc.

and i thought no one had ever heard of xkcd! i went to a facebook group called "i wish i could be your derivitive so i could lay tangent to your curves"..and saw like, all of xkcd's comics in there. i was like, "where the hell have you guys been?" as a matter of fact...where the hell have YOU guys been? i look like a damn idiot trying to explain why i can't hang out because i have to finish reading a webcomic to friends with actual social lives.

have i said that already? oh well, wth. :D

...I feel like such a loser as I haven't heard of, or read 97% of the comics you've all listed (...That's just a guess...).
Those that have been aforementioned that I like: QC, of course! And it is actually the one webcomic that I make sure to read daily --all of my other Webcomic reads I let pile up for a month or two, and then read them all at one time. Also, Something Positive (Simply for Choo-choo...)

Those that haven't been mentioned (and thus making me feel like a reclusive loooooser): Todd and Penguin, FAIL (though that has been scraped for his new project: Bring Your Own Awesome), F.A.R.T.S., and The Devil's Panties (on the occasion).

The first webcomic I ever read (and had already been ended/scrapped by the time I got to it) was Writhe and Shine. ...I should go read it again. It's been awhile.

I think as far as humor goes, Penny Arcade is my favorite webcomic.

I also really like Gone With the Blastwave.  It's hilarious but I wish he would update more often.  http://www.blastwavecomic.com/

I've only discovered QC just recently but it quickly became one of my favorites and it's easily my favorite story driven comic.  The fact that it's pretty funny is a nice treat too.

Inverloch is also a great fantasy comic.  I really like the art and story (and the frequency of updates).  http://www.seraph-inn.com/index.html

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal (http://www.smbc-comics.com/)

stories
Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/)
No Rest For The Wicked (http://www.forthewicked.net/)
Inverloch (http://www.seraph-inn.com/)
Kagerou (http://www.electric-manga.com/)

funnies stories
LinT (http://www.purnicellin.com/lint/)
No Crap! (http://nocrap.13brothels.net/)
Loserz (http://loserz.scribblekid.org/)

White Ninja and Dr McNinja - Ninja comics for the WIN
Okay, now I have to know - are there any good PIRATE comics out there?
Title: Re: Whats your favorite webcomic and why?
Post by: fashionablenerdgrl on 09 Dec 2006, 09:31
the only good comics in the funnies section of the newspaper are sam and fuzzy and pearls before swine. sam and fuzzy is hilarious because they are so deliberately obtuse, and pearls before swine because they crack alot of jokes about coffee-fanatics and their wildly ridiculous drink orders. i appreciate it more because i used to work for a well-known coffee company, and yes, there were people who ordered double cup small nonfat single shot half decaf 2 raw sugar no foam 2 pumps of peppermint and one pump of chocolate mocha. including me. (but since when i made it for myself, there were no customers...and no long ass line...so i actually LIKED to do it..and i knew my own damn drink order. not like im going to throw it out and complain about myself if it didn't come out well.)

and because rat is such a bastard. its wonderful :D

i think i have heard of user friendly, but never actually went...or im going out of my damn mind

garfield is only good when its in a book so you can read all of them at once.

And I can't believe this comic wasn't mentioned (online or not):

CALVIN AND HOBBES. probably spelling that totally wrong...and probably already mentioned. once again..out of my damn mind.

but seriously, thats like, the best comic ever. i used to read it as a little girl and laugh at the funny pictures (because lord knows my ability to comprehend large words was zero), but then i came across the book a few years ago and read it and suddenly i laughed even more than before--because i GOT IT. it was, truly, amazing.

CALVIN AND HOBBES.
...you know, I never read Calvin and Hobbes until my junior year of high school and realized what a masterpeice it was... It made me a little sad I had never ventured it out before... My Aunt wants to get the giant collection w/ every single strip ever printed for the library, but it is uber-expensive, so she's been getting the little collections, haha. I love it when I talk her into buying stuff for the library that no one nessessarily wants but me and her :) Having an Aunt for a librarian is awesome.

3. Tim Buckley's Ctrl+Alt+Del

http://ctrlaltdel-online.com/

Tim "Absath" Buckley makes such great game comics, it's always a good laugh. He's a great guy.

4

May I refer you to this - http://www.hockeyzombie.com/

Tim Buckley is NOT a great guy. He is a nasty little prick.
Okay, here's the Tim Buckley lesson for today, just so you can all learn why the webcomics world hates the man.

Let's start with the RoMicide incident. Tim befriended a 16 or 17 year old girl online and tried to form a relationship with her anyway. Several people pointed out that she was underage, but Buckley sent naked pictures of himself to her. He propostitioned a minor, but was never caught by the law for it. Some members of the RoM subforum at CAD began discussing the incident, and some called bullshit on Tim for his behavior. The thread was deleted; anyone who posted in the thread, or even read the thread, was perma-banned from the forums. The RoM forum was shut down after that in a massive purge of nearly 1/3 of the forum members.

Next up is the WoW guild. Tim formed a guild on World of Warcraft, but eventually left the guild, and left it in the hands of the other leaders. A month after he quit, he logs on, supposedly drunk, and proceeds to go on an obscenity laced rant and banned EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF THE CLAN, killing the organization in a half-hour, and leaving those members up shit's creek. (The PvP guild took a lot of them in after that.) Now it's a bannable offense to even discuss WoW or that incident in the CAD forums.

Now we get to the OTHER gaming incident, the Battlefield one. Tim asked for money from his forum members to get a CAD server for BF2. After a brief time, he suddenly up and quits that game, (rumor is he sucked and got sick of it) and just takes the money before it was used to pay for another month/whatever time period. He shut down that server; nobody could play on it. He never paid back the money he took - he just basically screwed those people.

Now we come to the Kris Straub letter. Tim went on a rant about Webcomics Appreciation Day (nowhere near the date of the event) and said it was just a bunch of bullshit. Kris Straub, who does Checkerboard Nightmare and Starslip Crisis, wrote Tim an e-mail that explained that while Tim may not have liked the idea, a lot of artists saw it as just that little bit of recognition for their efforts. (I've seen the letter, it was very nice and polite.) Tim responded by telling Straub to "go back to blowing Kurtz", and that "I get more e-mail in one day than you get in a year." The way the response was written, it seemed to imply that Tim thought success was measured by e-mail, and he showed such utter disrespect and contempt for Straub - the rudeness level was easily a ten; it's known within the webcomics world that Tim just doesn't give the slightest shit about other comics - that's fine, but he openly bashes and disrespects pretty much any other comicker that approaches him, spouting off on how much more successful he is and whatnot. He's just plain mean.

He also does not respect his forum members. As long as they're kissing his ass, he's fine with it, but when someone offers some constructive critisism, that individual will have the thread locked, and will likely be banned for trolling. Tim literally CANNOT take critisism of any kind; he sees his success as the only justification for putting out a formulaic, chronic-cut-paste comic that just keeps recycling the same jokes over and over again. (Just read it for awhile, folks, it used to be good, but now it's the internet's Garfield - successful but not entertaining.) Tim has shown open, nasty contempt for anyone that so much as suggests he do, well, anything, really.

People don't like Tim Buckely because he's a moody, disrespectful jerk who treats other people as if they were beneath him. He took money from his forum-goers and denied them the service they were paying for. He's exposed himself to and propositioned a minor. And I've never heard of him donating to any charity.

So there you have it. This is why Tim Buckley is the most hated man in webcomics. It took a lot, but HE EARNED that title.

The Hockey Zombie forums are populated by A LOT of ex-CADers, including some ex-mods who were purged for going against Tim over the nude pictures incident. They can tell you all the details there, if you ask. The link I put up is for Hockey Zombie, so just jump to the forums. The incidents where Tim shut down the server, taking that money - and where he drunkenly disbanded the guild is all pretty common knowledge - it's a bannable offense if you even discuss those incidents on the fourms. You can also just ask Kris Straub about the letter; he posted a copy of it somewhere in the Blank Label's forums, but I'm sure he still has it saved and would be happy to show you. As for the disrespect towards fans, just watch the fourms and Tim's newsposts. He takes cheap shots, it's his policy to ban ANYONE who even critisizes his comic a little bit, and he tends to act like an ass if you e-mail him with any suggestions/constructive critisisms. This is assuming he actually responds. Just observe his behavior there.

My absolute favorite, addiction-worthy webcomics are:

1. 8-Bit Theater (http://nuklearpower.com/) - I can't get enough of Fighter McWarrior and Black Mage o.o That's a comic to be read from first to last.

2. Cyanide and Happiness (http://explosm.net) - The ultimate in offensive gross-out humor (at least that I've seen so far) Awesome stick-figure-esque characters in random funny situations, and it's daily.

3. Quesionable Content - obviously. I love Faye (and I miss her recently), and Pintsize.

4. VG Cats (http://www.vgcats.com) - Cartoon cats in video game-related parodies. And sometimes, movie critique?

As far as the funny pages go, I love Foxtrot, Zits, Get Fuzzy, Life in Hell, Dilbert, Boondocks, Frazz, and Brewster Rockit: Space Guy!

1. Dominic Deegan - I can't say enough good things about this comic. It does possibly have the bitchiest fan forum base i have ever seen though.

2. VG Cats - Duh.

3. QC

4. Commissioned

5. Loserz -  Erik finally started daily updates again. thank fucking god.

6. Dr. McNinja

7. Sorcery 101

8. Something Positive

9. Dualing Analogs

10. Gone with the Blastwave - This one would be higher if it wasn't on temporary hiatus and I didn't know when it was starting back up.

at one point, Ctrl+Alt+Del would have been up there, but something happened at some point and I just started hating everything about the comic.

i don't have anything against tim buckley the person, none of the stuff i've heard about him really does much to separate him from most other internet major personalities i can think of... my beef is strictly relegated to his comic. i don't understand why it's so goddamned popular (well okay, I DO.. more accurately I resent it's popularity.) "witty observation about your taste/gender/preferred gaming platform followed by violence in place of actual punchline" doesn't even BEGIN to qualify as comedy in my book. it's depressing to see what I consider complete mediocrity blow everything else out of the water.

...Concidering my Mom works in a Wal*Mart Deli as a manager... I guess that's handier if you like books.  :-P

i am a dude who likes his books. although come to think of it, growing up, i didn't really have a choice.

That makes me so sad to hear about someone like that, abusing their popularity and such. I feel like the time I found out that Santa Clause wasn't real.

I derno though, I suppose reptition runs in my blood (hence, military school), so the way the comic kind of does circles around itself as far as jokes go doesn't bother me. I'm easily amused. Granted, since you guys have pointed it out, I have been going through the storylines in my head and realise that it is getting worse.

Ethan (the main character), still says funny things once in a while...but mostly in the past, as well as his Xbox. But other than that I find myself less willing to check the updates and instead check XKCD. (who knew that a joke about mathematics after sex not being good bedroom talk would be hilarious to a girl who failed almost every single year of math since 1st grade?)...(and why do I finally get stuff now?)

It's a tragedy. (About the comic and the writer)

Scary Go Round (http://www.scarygoround.com), because it's British humour that I can most certainly get (OK, first british webcomic I got into. When I got into webcomics, I though they were all American. Poor, deluded, Scottish soul...)

QC, because what's not to like about QC?

:-)I..only read QC *hides under rock* Yeah, so obviously it's my favorite. I've read others, but I just didn't stick with them like I did w/ QC. When I forst started reading, I read 100 or so strips in about 4 hours. Catching up for everything I missed  :-D

I always feel like a bit of a tool when I say Penny Arcade is my favorite comic, but until I find one that is as consistently funny, then I'm going to keep saying it. Plus, Tycho's newsposts are often pretty informative as well.

It goes without saying QC is one of my fav's.

But I also like 8-bit Theater and *gasp* Megatokyo.  xkcd is another fav, tho I doubt anyone's heard of it.

I'm a fan of xkcd as well =D That and QC are my favorites.

I always feel like a bit of a tool when I say Penny Arcade is my favorite comic, but until I find one that is as consistently funny, then I'm going to keep saying it. Plus, Tycho's newsposts are often pretty informative as well.

Penny Arcade does have a remarkable consistency. It's not often very funny, but it is consistently amusing, and there's the odd strip that makes me bang my head against my window until I can breathe again.

Also, I am waaaay too much in to SGR. To the point where the standard christmas break is exacerbating my Seasonal Affective Disorder I have picked up by not encountering sunlight for more than an hour overall in the last week. Also, It actually soured my day when Friend Bat was killed off, and I was made happy by the introduction of Comrade Bat a few weeks later.

I always used to wonder why SGR is so seemingly under-known. Then I read a review of it on Comixpedia that claimed, among other things, that its formula relied on not using punchlines and was basically only worth it for the quirky situations. This proves that, in light of strips like this (http://www.scarygoround.com/index.php?date=20050324), people are probably still not quite getting British humour.

Also, lol, I just remembered the strip in Bulgaria where Amy and Shelley escape the hotel dressed as nuns, leaving the problem to some 'proffessional vampyr slayers'. I had never thought tiny onomatopaeic screams of agony could be quite so amusing. I was still breaking out laughing by the time I want to bed.

Anyone got a favourite SGR strip or storyline or whatnot btw? I think my definitively favourite page is the one on which Dark Esther recieves her monthly letter from the Marilyn Manson fan club, best chapter I don't know. Can't decide on a favourite character either.

Am I the only person, by the way, who thinks that of all the webcomics ever made, Scary Go Round would make the best TV series? Imagine each chapter compiled in to a 45 minute tv show. It would be like a British version of Eerie, Indiana, on crack. So fucking good.

One that nobody has mentioned is Jorge Cham's "Piled Higher and Deeper" set in the world of Grad School. Of course it is probably only funny to people stuck in grad school, or those who are recovering from it ib one way or another. http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php (http://www.phdcomics.com/comics.php)

Beyond that my daily reads are SP, Wapsi (although it is losing it's appeal) GWS, Least I could Do, The Lounge (guilty pleasure) The Devil's Panties, A Girl and Her Fed and Misfile... that is beyond QC of course. I occasionally catch up on Penny and Aggie, Candi, Sore Thumbs, TAV, and others when I need to procrastinate.

I really wish Josh had finished Avalon and would get a stable new strip going, something about his stuff sucks me in.

I also have a 20 page list of things I once read but abandoned...

My favorites are definitely as follows (in no particular order, because I like them for different reasons)

Occasionally I go to Penny Arcade, CAD or VG Cats, but I'm not into the gaming humor as much. They're well done and everything, just not my style.

Something Positive. great punchlines, but great storytelling as well.
QC obviously.
Overcompensating because it's hilarious (and I like it more than Wigu too).
Wapsi Square when it isn't boring, sorry, mysterious supernatural stuff leaves me cold.

Somehow, inexplicably, years ago I found Nuklear Power.  It led me to Something Positive, which led me to Queen of Wands (which I still miss, what a great comic).

Currently I only read Girl Genius and QC regularly.  I visit Something Positive and Dr. McNinja on occasion though.

Story line: QC. It just feels good to laugh at things five days a week.

I use to read TKT, and 8-but theatre, but I've just suddenly stopped.
I love how the art is done for QC though (seriously.)

cyanide and happiness...i think i remember reading that.

but seriously, explosm is better.

it has the ads from google on it, and most of them are "how to make cyanide" and "killing yourself" ads for sites.

quite disturbing. adds to the awesomeness of the comic...sometimes.

All I read is:

Something Positive (owns for pure cynicism)
Overcompensating (owns for pure random awesomeality)
QC (owns for cultural references and characters that fit nicely inside my personal realm)
Ctrl-Alt-Del (to satisfy my inner dweebengeek)
Toothepaste For Dinner (haha!)
Cyanide and Happiness (hahaha!)

and sometimes VG Cats.

QC (durr)
CAD

Honestly, my favorite comic changes all the time. My two favorites at the moment are QC and Yami No Tainai (http://ynt.pensandtales.com).
I like QC because it's funny, very nice looking, original, and it has great stories and characters that I can relate to in some ways.
Yami No Tainai... I don't know really. I love the whole idea of it, the stories, the art, and I guess I'm just really into things that are just not possible or plausible.

Oh, and I'm really into just random, funny comics like CAD, Press Start To Play, VG Cats, Emergency Exit, Staccato, etc. Whoa, I just realized as I typed that those are all mostly gaming comics, haha.

Right. Well.

BOB THE ANGRY FLOWER.

I mean, come ON. Nobody mentioned that? You GUYS! SERIOUSLY!

Technically it's not really a webcomic, as it IS available in print, but I have never laughed so much in my life as wehn I first read through all the archives. Sometimes it's strange and sometimes the jokes don't even have real punchlines, but when they do, they're hilarious. And there's just so much strange and far-out SHIT that after a while you start to get giddy and laugh even when there is no punchline at all.

Second is probably Girly. I mean- Dghfksfhk- drghsck- bhmskbvhchk-... IT'S GIRLY!

Aaaaand, while we're at it, some of my other favorites are:

QC (duh)
Checkerboard Nightmare (after it stopped, then when it started up again until it suddenly halted)
Starslip Crisis (but I don't want to catch up with it now after so long not reading it)
Melonpool! (even though it hasn't had a real update in ages)
Count Your Sheep (cute and clever, with some real emotional stuff too)

There's a couple others, but I've either lost interest completely or they stopped updating so long ago that I don't give a shit anymore.

Also, I also used to love It's Walky!, but I came into it at the wrong time, because now it's just a lame gag strip that you have to PAY for even. It's completely past its prime and tired out now. Like Garfield. But definitely much better than Garfield. But still... it's kind of sad.

Khar, I agree with you on just about everything you've said about Scary Go Round, I think it has some of the most sublime situational humour and the way he manages to hold continuity through all of the various threads and characters is mad genius. I'd say SGR is my favourite webcomic simply because of it's consistency over the entire archive, with Achewood and Overcompensating coming in equal second.

I'm fairly new to most of the Dumbrella comics, (I read Diesel Sweeties, SGR, OC and I've just finished the Wigu archive) and I still haven't attempted Goats yet (when I read a comic I have to read the entire archive) but I'd have to say they're my favourites, along with QC and qwantz.

I also read Alien Loves Predator, SMBC, Perry Bible Fellowhip (occasionally) and Toothpaste For Dinner (occasionally)

I don't think anyone in here has mentioned Thinkin Lincoln (http://www.thinkin-lincoln.com) and as far as I'm concerned it's criminally underrated, as I don't know anyone else that reads it.

Also, I was considering stopping reading CAD and after that post about all the shit he did, it's been sealed.

For storyline/character comics, I go for Something Positive, followed by QC.  I just like the more realistic aspects of S*P, plus the added vulgarity.

For gag comics, Penny Arcade in a three way tie with Perry Bible Fellowship and xkcd.

Achewood (http://www.achewood.com) is not only my favorite webcomic, it is my favorite comic strip period, in any media.  Chris Onstad's level of writing is far and beyond what a lot of comics even hope to achieve, and it's amazing just how thoroughly pretty much every character's personality is fleshed out (especially the ones who have blogs).  The crude black and white artwork fits the atmosphere of the strip, and although his drawing skills are somewhat unrefined, Chris can still visually communicate the mood of a scene very effectively.

Christ... I read so many. but here are a couple that come to mind

Penny Arcade (I just bought their new book)
Questionable Content (duh)
Cat and Girl (other people don't get it, so it makes me feel smart)
Stuff Sucks (I just bought Liz's iPod skin, and am loving it)
Nothing Nice to Say (I wish it updated more :()
Beaver and Steve (I did a guest comic for him :D)
Diesel Sweeties (Always clever and sweet t-shirts to boot)

so yeah, I guess that's it

YAY!!

I do not mean to hate on other webcomics, but I cannot stomach Achewood. Seriously, it's challenging to even finish one strip. This could be because of the art, since everyone goes on about the writing... I dunno.

Well, I've got a tie goin' here for webcomics. Bunny and QC.

I like Bunny the most for it's randomness, funny drawings, and craziness.

QC's plot, character development, and artistic design are spectacular.

Then again, if Calvin & Hobbes was a webcomic, it would take number one. I'm so glad I got that complete book collection. The Giant one. It's only flaw is it's weight.

Achewood by a longshot. Onstad's writing is absolutely brilliant, and the depth added to the characters via their blogs, Beef's zine, Nice Pete's books etc just makes it that much better.

New Favorite- Least I Could Do www.leasticoulddo.com
It's just good fun. I've been reading it since it's start, and
it's just been wonderful all the way through.

Butternut Squash www.butternutsqaush.net

In order of intoduction:

Megatokyo
I was introduced to this in Year 10 (aged 14/15), and loved it. When Rodney Caston (Largo) was part of it, the humout and the 1337 did kick ass, and was so hilarious (am I a geek for admitting that I can understand 1337 5p33|<?) Anyway, the drawings, no matter how much they have changed over time still kick ass, and have been the inspiration for me to draw my own manga etc. I have printed Vols 1-3 (hoping to get 4 soon), and I love how the story has developed from slapstick humour to having a really good storyline (though I hope that Ed, Dom and Junpei show up more soon).

Applegeeks
This I linked through from MT, and I started reading it not too long before AG Lite came in, and then they updated it into v3.0 (apologies for other posts, I've been saying v2.0). Again, love the colouring (NB colour with a "u" people!) and detail, although MT has that really nice original sketchy quality to it, AG has that slightly more professional touch. :) Lite always makes me giggle, and there are (sadly) quite a few strips that remind me a lot of my Mac obsessed friend Sam (the booting windows on a mac one is quite true).

Questionable Content
Ah yes. The Diamond in the Rough. I have actually learnt a lot about comebacks and sass from QC, which has suprised my incredibly Faye-like friend Fran. Though I wasn;t a fan of the drawing style in the beginning, I love the newer stuff (cept for the loss of eye colours) and if I had shorter hair, I would probably end up copying Ravens' styles (though not with Astro Glide). I love the idea that it is set in a totally alternate reality, with robots and stuff (I would adore to have an anthro PC, in orange or purple hehe. I'd call it Albert I think), and the fact that I have heard of those bands! I'm guessing the indie/psych/glitch scene is bigger in America than over here...

Ornery Boy
Enie (my sis) introduced me to this. Full of hatred and zombies (and where I got my avatar from). Interesting, yet original. The only downside I can think of is that the authour takes forever to update.

Explosm Comics
Wrong wrong and wrong. But in a sadistic humourous way, i.e. "bulimia - twice the taste, none of the calories". But these last two are just comics I look at every now and then...the first three are the ones that I follow (almost relgiously).

Speaking of religion, and this is probably going to lead to me being shot, flamed and sued all in one, but I was watching an episode of Top Gear yesterday. I leant that you should not drive though Bagdad in Alabama with "I'm bi" or "Jesus loves gay men" down the side of a pick up truck (I linked that through my mention of religous followings of comics above, if you don't see how I got there).

My apologies to anyone who is from the Deep South, or is rather religious...but I wanted to say that neways.

Other than my comic (http://www.tellingtalltales.net)?  (Of course my comic is one of my favorites - it's mine.)  I'd have to say Rob and Elliot.  It regularly gets me with its funny.  I mean, it's just that good.  Unfortunately, it rarely updates.  The same feelings can be said for PBF.

QC is like that girl with the curl in her hair - when it's good, it's really good.  About once a week it makes me laugh out loud, and that is worth coming back every day.

I used to be really into RealLife and Ctrl-Alt-Del, but they've both just kind of slipped down the list, as I feel my maturity has slowly outstripped their comics.  I think I just demand more for my time now, in terms of humor and character development.

Penny-Arcade is just getting better and better, but my knowledge of videogames is waning, so it becomes less pertinent.  It was like when I went to go see Margaret Cho - she was funny, but I'm neither a woman, gay, nor Asian, so 90% of her jokes had nothing to do with me.

PvPOnline was my favorite for a long time, but I think it's getting less funny as Kurtz spreads himself out over more and more projects.

The comics I read every regularly are QC, PA, PvP, Stuff Sucks, Dinosaur Comics, and of course, mine (http://www.tellingtalltales.net).

I still read CAD, it gets a chuckle now and then.

And of course, QC.  Those are my top three.

Other than that, I check out XKCD and bunny pretty regularly.  Girl Genious occasionally.

I think everyone places QC as #2 so they don't seem like suck-ups. It's my first choice, and the only comic I have to read every day. Second on that list is Schlock Mercenary. Been reading that since his art was craptastic (God, look at those earlier strips!). The rest here are in no particular order:

I like Penny Arcade of course, but sometimes I prefer the newsposts more than the comic itself, like when Tycho was in Europe. Order of the Stick; also very good, as is Turn Signals on a Land Raider. Are there any other WH40k comics currently updating regularly? Woo, then there's the dumbrella comics, like Goats (preferred it when it was random silly, but it's still good), Overcompensating (webcest, anyone?), and Diesel Sweeties. I also like the Blank Label Comics, like Schlock of which I've mentioned above, or Shortpacked, Wapsi Square (of which can sometimes be stranger than it needs to be), and Ugly Hill.

I read a lot of webcomics; can you tell? I'd be here all day if I were to list 'em all.

Planet Zebeth - doubt anyone else has heard of it, a pretty decent Metroid sprite comic that is actually funny and well put together

* El Goonish Shive. So twistedly awesome I adore this comic despite Dan's abysmal update schedule
* One One Se7en because I'm a fan of Halo and terrible puns. This one registers pretty high.
* Ctrl-Alt-Del mainly because I've been reading it for years and it's like a familiar face to me. Plus it was my intro to webcomics.
* Penny-Arcade because I very simply find Gabe and Tycho hilarious
* VGCats and Applegeeks are very good to me art-wise. Applegeeks has some nice story too
* XKCD and Dinosaur Comics have such a pure geekiness it makes me giggle

My new favorite webcomic has become Lucid-TV because I've been in that work environment, and I have a special kind of loathing for medical residents who feel that tacking on an "M.D." onto their name gives them special privilege.

Plus, they came up with the idea of "pre-suppositories" *giggles*. That's brilliant.

My current list of favorite webcomics:

* Bruno the Bandit http://www.brunothebandit.com/ - very old webcomic, recently had some problems, but now returned, definitely a classic !
* Candi http://www.candicomics.com/ - candi is an art student and theres a lot funny stuff with romances and adventures and talking animals going on !
* Ctrl+Alt+Del http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php - geeky computer gamer humor with crazy characters
* Dilbert http://www.dilbert.com/ - was much better in the past, nowadays is more some kind of depressive destructive humor
* Dominic Deegan http://www.dominic-deegan.com/ - fantasy tales around a divination wizard in a fascinating gameworld
* Goblins - Life through their eyes http://goblinscomic.com/ - title says it
* Gunnerkrigg Court http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php - very strange and unconventional comic about a girl at a really strange school
* Hagar the Horrible http://kingfeatures.com/features/comics/hagar/about.htm - only 7 comics per month, but alas
* Irregular Webcomic http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/ - geekiest webcomic ever, with a lot of different story arcs
* Marry Me http://www.marrymemovie.com/ - new classic webcomic about a popstar who marries out of an impulse, I luv it, crazy / funny / charming !
* Megatokyo http://www.megatokyo.com/ - another classic. two american gamers stuck in tokyo. really hard to explain
* Misfile http://www.misfile.com/ - well an angel made an error and turned a boy into a girl. quest to undo it turns out to be very long
* No rest for the wicked http://www.forthewicked.net/ - a lot of fairy tales serve as inspiration. currently very inactive ! :(
* Peanuts http://www.snoopy.com/ - classic
* Questionable Content  ... - you're there
* The Order of the Stick http://www.giantitp.com/ - DnD humor, uber, my total favorite

Maybe not as good, but still cool:

* Atland http://www.realmofatland.com/ - a really weird fantasy comic
* Dieselsweeties http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1 - a classic with currently 1,700 strips
* Drowtales http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?location=01cover&filter=story - story of a drow girl

* Freefall http://freefall.purrsia.com/ - omg how to explain that. very witty sci fi story arc
* Girls Genius Online http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/ - sci fi fantasy story about a girl with powers to create wondrous machines, gets hunted by everyone
* Girly http://go-girly.com/ - story about a lesbian loverpair who loved to go for adventuring
* Joyce and Walky! http://www.itswalky.com/ - sci fi romance / adventure story, changes in its update schedule
* Marilith http://www.marilith.com/ - story about a female killer, we're still only in the introduction as it seems
* The Seraph Inn - Inverloch http://www.seraph-inn.com/viewcomic.php?page=1 - fantasy story arc that seems to be finished soon
* Twokinds http://2kinds.com/ - fantasy story of a boy who goes with a catgirl and they're hunted and a war between the races is coming
* Vampire Phantasm http://www.vermillionworks.com/vp/ - a story about a vampire

Well, the overall favorite is Order of the Stick, for extreme originality (you need to know a bit Pen and Paper Roleplaying games to really get all jokes there, though). Second comes Questionable Content for very much the same reason. Marry Me is new, but it almost immediately entered my favorite list. I can also not wait to get the next episode of Dominic Degan, misfile, Goblins, Irregular Webcomic, and Megatokyo. No rest for the wicked seems to be either dead or dying because sadly there hasnt been much update as of late...

Hmmm... all-time favorite would have to be Sam and Fuzzy (don't kill me! ). It introduced to webcomics and it has some really good dialogue. I even quoted it in my college essays...

Coming after Sam and Fuzzy are Ctrl + Alt + Del, VG Cats, and Questionable Content (not necessarily in that order XD)... I used to like Megatokyo, but I sort of stopped caring about the characters... might pick it up again in a month or so when I need distractions from AP classes...

My favourite comic by far is xkcd, because it appeals to my inner science geek (and to my outer math geek, come to think of it...) but I'm also a fan of QC (appeals to my inner indie geek) and to Order of the Stick (appeals to my inner D&D geek).

Other things that I read are Cyanide & Happiness, Wondermark, A Softer World and PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper) which are all lovely.

I've found some more webcomics recently, that I've been checking regularly!

Sidekick Girl (http://sidekickgirl.comicgenesis.com/)
Someone here plugged it, and I got hooked :P

Nineteenth Century Industrialist (http://thebaron.comicgenesis.com/d/20070615.html)
This is just some crazy stuff, about a dopey/greedy/evil 19th Century Industrialist, who somehow exists in present time. Colonel Earth and protesters and whatnot keep trying to shut him down. Also the pope and Uncle Sam make appearances.

The Mows (http://www.mows.com)
This one is about the author's cats, and what they think and how they interact with eachother. There are a ton of simple-minded, innocent observations about the world that are hilarious.

Penny Arcade
Megatokyo
Questionable Content

...and A Softer World. It got mentioned once on the first page, but it needs to be said again. This comic (calling it a 'comic' doesn't feel quite right, though) does something the likes of which I see nowhere else. Moments of sheer brilliance that go well beyond humor.

here's a sample (picked a spot at random in the archives and went forward a bit until I found a good one):

If I were to just name comics, this would be a lot simpler. So, I won't be giving many reasons as to why I like these comics. I just do.
VGCats
Penny Arcade
Achewood
Perry Bible Fellowship
Dr. McNinja
xkcd
A Softer World
MegaTokyo
Sam and Fuzzy
Questionable Content
Stuff Sucks
Dresden Codak
and Rice Boy
Rice Boy needs a lot more pluggin'. It is a fantastic comic with an overarcing storyline that is unique in its own way. By unique I mean the world it is set in is so whimsical that I cannot help but love it. The art helps a lot though.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, please, someone read Rice Boy. http://riceboy.jho-tan.com/
I am not blogging!

Not only should that get more plugging...  it should be famous.
It demands a cult following.

Hrm.  That is really a tough one.  I read umpteen million webcomics, so it's hard to pinpoint just one.

º I (obviously) am a huge QC fan - the story and characters are phenomenal.  my only problem is that it seems mildly watered down lately.  I'm not sure what it is - maybe I've just been reading the same comics for too long with little refresh.

º I used to be the unofficial Something Positive fangirl.  it was perfect - painfully blunt sarcasm, cynicism, etc - lately, however, it just feels like the same joke over and over.  it's almost like how the Simpsons stopped being funny after 12 seasons.  it's like he's running out of material or something.  I still read it, but not as faithfully.

º VG Cats, simply because Scott Ramsoomair is a comedic genius.  Hands down.  I just get sick of the lack of consistent updates at times.

º Jack - I'm just a fan of the art and story behind it.  My only problems?... Well, i'm very agnostic, so the problems are sort of self-explanatory.

º Least I can Do - ....I can't even explain this one.  I just shit myself each time.

º Ice - The artwork is phenomenal, and I'm really growing fond of the story.  I'm just ticked right now because the story stalled at a key point back in July.

º Fallen by Aido - Again, this artwork is amazing.  She also is an amazing storyteller.  Again, stalled and lack of consistent updates.

º Flipside - An awesome comic, hands down.  The characters and storytelling are A+.  My only problem is that the story seems to take forever to get going.

º 9th Elsewhere is adorable and well-done - it just seems to have completely stalled out of nowhere.  The last update was pegged for June, but nothing has appeared.  Even the forums have frozen.

º Strings of Fate was simply stunning - everything about it to me was a joygasm.  I was just one of the billion fans that wanted to kill someone when it just up and disappeared.  ;;

º No Rest For The Wicked is delightfully macabre and well-written.  I just hate that, like Flipside, the story seems to take forever to go anywhere since the Hansel and Gretel storyline :/

º Bittersweet Candybowl is very cute.  Taeshilh is kick-ass.  My only complaint is that she doesn't update much anymore!  ;;

Penny and Aggie has been my current favourite for some time.  T Campbell writes well-rounded characters and is never afraid to take risks, play with reader expectations, and experiment with new storytelling techniques.  And Gisele Lagace's art, like Jeph's, puts the majority of webcomic artists to shame.  I also regularly read Candi, Least I Could Do and QC.

Webcomics I catch up with periodically in batches include Piled Higher and Deeper, Shortpacked (so I can skip past the Transformer jokes and author self-insertions),, Sordid City Blues and Nothing Better.

My favourite completed webcomic is Queen of Wands.  Once Aerie got her artistic skills and her idea of the strip's direction up to snuff, it was simply outstanding, with some of the most innovative artistic techniques for storytelling purposes I've seen in any comic, online or print.  (From what I've seen of the spinoff, Punch 'n' Pie, though...meh.)

Webcomics I used to read but dropped reluctantly, due to time constraints or other reasons, include Something Positive and Sluggy Freelance.

Finally, webcomics whose print collections I've purchased and still enjoy:  Penny and Aggie, Least I Could Do, PhD and Sluggy Freelance.  (And I'm sure this has been brought up in other threads, but isn't it time for a QC collection?)

My background is I'm a mathematics grad student and live in a fraternity so yea, I like geeky crude humor.

1) xkcd.com - The funniest thing I have ever read, and I hate art so stick figures have a special place in my heart. Requires some knowledge in certain fields to get the jokes but has punchlines if you hover over in case you dont get it.

2) explosm.net - Crude, funny, basic, humor. It's getting better, early stuff kinda suxed.

3) lfgcomic.com - Has a great storyline and I only like it cause Richard is too funny.

My favorite, and has been the second i laid eyes upon his work is Tom Siddell's Gunnerkrigg Court.

His quirky story and dialog style and wonderfully simplistic yet enticing art style top my lists.

My other favorite(s) are Ryan Sohmers Least i could do and Looking for group. That man is just a damn genius at comedy and creative writing.

Oh c'mon, where are all the Sluggites? Surely there's gotta be more than just myself and the one other person who mentioned Sluggy Freelance? At any rate, I made an account on these forums just to let everyone know that SF is the single greatest webcomic ever. It just celebrated its 10 year anniversary about a week ago, and, believe it or not, the comic is still going strong, and seems to be only getting better with each month that passes. While I wouldn't go so far as to say that SF is a comic that anyone and everyone can enjoy, I imagine that most of the people who read QC will probably enjoy SF - SF has the strongest characterizations I've ever seen in a comic period, and some of the storylines are just... amazing. SF is one of those rare comics that'll not only make you laugh until you cry, but the author, Pete Abrams, also knows how to elicit some genuine poignant moments, and, so far as I'm concerned, his work is unmatched. So do yourself a favor and go check it out, and be sure to start at the beginning! Sure, it means that you'll have a lot of reading to do before you get anywhere near to catching up (Sluggy updates everyday, and, for the most part, manages to avoid filler), but it'll be well worth your time. Also, I read about twenty or so webcomics on a general basis, but the ones I enjoy the most, besides Sluggy Freelance and Questionable Content, are Penny Arcade, Megatokyo, Least I Could Do, Looking for Group, and Fetus-X, all of which I'd highly recommend (unless you are a horribly impatient person, then do yourself a favor and skip Megatokyo).

I like QC, though it is the only one of its kind I have been able to enjoy all the way through. Other comics I would consider my favorites
OOTS(with Erfworld)
CAD (I dont really know why I like it)
VGCats (I like me some video games)
Looking For Group (I really like the art + humor in this)

Other comics I like but do not consider my favorites
Bizzare Uprising (and I liked Entertaindome when it was still around)
Perry Bible Fellowship (Would be a fav if it updated more often)
8-bit Theater (used to love it a few years ago, dropped of a lot since then)
Turn Signals on a Land Raider (I like warhammer)
Striptease (Read it a day before QC, got the link to QC from a newspost there.)
Chugworth ( :( come back)
Girl Genius (I read it now and then)

plus I have read a lot of comics I did not really like. :/

I'm a big fan of the gamer comics, but of course I'll read almost anything if it holds my attention.
Here are the top ones I've liked:

1. http://www.wtfcomics.com/ (http://www.wtfcomics.com/)
-the first webcomic I ever read.  It's a fan comic for EverQuest (FYI) and has awesome art.  Unfortunately, it doesn't update for weeks at a time, so I don't read it as much as I used to.

2. http://www.vgcats.com/ (http://www.vgcats.com/)
-very funny, in a very crazy way

3. http://www.cad-comic.com/ (http://www.cad-comic.com/)
-also very funny, oh the stupid shit you do, Ethan!

4. www.questionablecontent.net (http://www.questionablecontent.net) (why da fug did I put a hyperlink?!?!)
-should be obvious. Just kidding, this comic sucks ASS!!!! GAWD!!!

5. www.dominic-deegan.com (http://www.dominic-deegan.com)
-another comic I have read for a long time and love.

6. http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/ (http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/)
-a good comic, love it's GRRRR attitude!

....and many more!

Trust me when I say MANY more, I don't have just one favroite.  I just read the archives kinda of like books, and when I'm done doing that I move on to another webcomic and repeat process (of course checking the updates of all the other webcomics I read)

Rob and Elliot is one of my favorites as well. The comic is hit or miss due to its zany, random nature, but when it hits the comic just makes me happy in the least uncomplicated way possible. It's also worth mentioning that I rarely enjoy guest strips very much, but I enjoyed it when Rob and Elliot's Clay Yount did Bikini Suicide Frisbee Days saturday strips for Sluggy Freelance.

Here's a few of my favorite strips Clay did for Sluggy since they're a pinch tricky for people to find within Sluggy's formidable archives:
http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=061125 (http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=061125)
http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=060610 (http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=060610)

And this one, which is notable because it somehow manages to establish an awful lot about a character in a mere three panels while retaining some funny:

1. Achewood, hands down. very, very few comics can make me actually laugh out loud, Achewood does it on a pretty consistent basis. I can reread the archives endlessly and not get bored. Onstad's characters are amazingly well-written, and the blogs and stuff are just icing on the already-flawless cake. Tied with Calvin and Hobbes for my favorite comic ever.

2. QC. the only other comic besides Achewood that I check just about daily, the regular updates are really nice. Not as funny as achewood, but good a pretty good story.

3. The Perry Bible Fellowship. I check this about once a week or so, since it's updated less frequently than some.

4. Mitch Clem's stuff is pretty good, but I've fallen out of the habit of checking it, it's been awhile since I've read any new stuff he's got.

I've been meaning to say this for a while. Saw this, and registered just for the purpose.

I know, I'm a geek. I prefer "Nerd Chic", but point still stands.

My favourite is, absolutely, QC. And the funny part is, I'm not into indie music at all for the most part. It's just the punchlines are so good, and frankly, the characters are ridiculously like people I know. I have - to annoy her-  begun referring to one as "Faye" whenever she gets particularly sarcastic. The strip just reminds me of people on a daily basis, and the jokes are fantastic, even to someone with less indie knowledge than a twig.

After that, I'd have to go with xkcd, pbf, Sinfest, and Captain SNES - and lord knows I still miss RPG World.

I see Time as an irrelevant monstrosity. They think that just because Achewood has an ongoing plot and swears and dongs that it's a graphic novel. Here's their complex formula:
If "kids" = no then "Graphic Novel" = true

...still, cute of them for trying.

those motherfuckers put a webcomic on a list for graphic novels! okay yes the first sentence of the review acknowledges the inconsistency and justifies it in a perfectly acceptable way but still who do they think they are?? this is an occasion to get puffy about semantics and not to be happy for achewood, an occasion to write some angry emails, with BULLET POINTS (the gloves are off).

I don't like to play favorites because it just seems silly so I will just tell you what I read on a regular basis.

Patches (www.hingos.com/patches)
Wondermark (www.wondermark.com)
Overcompensating
American Elf
Octopus Pie
(QC, duh)
Bunny
Nut and Bee (not really a comic, per se)
XKCD

The list of things I read semi-regularly is excessively long, and mostly consists of comics by people that I've met at conventions and really liked.

Lucid_tv
Dinosaur Comics
PA
Applegeeks
Sam and Fuzzy
Kittybot
Fallen
Reprographics
The Devil's Panties
and on and on...

I am in the minority in that I don't like traditional comics, I don't read Achewood or Scary-Go-Round(the giant archives scare me) and I don't like male-centric comics about video games most of the time.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that I haven't read too many, but my current favourites are XKCD and Questionable Content. XKCD just suits me. It's as if someone mapped my geeky, cynical, philisophical, and altogether random brain, and that map was XKCD.

However, I'm a sucker for a story-and-character-driven comic, and Questionable Content fills that need for me. I also associate very closely with the "damaged goods" characters, and I also can use the comic to expand my musical tastes.

Am I the only one who's posted recently who's read every single Goats strip?  Don't like the relative lack of ludicrously witty/intelligent banter ("Damn you Heisenberg*!"/"If you love Kant so much why don't you marry him?  A priori my ass!"  Then again maybe I'm just a pretentious ass that mistakes clever references for humor...but I doubt it.

Scary Go Round is consistently amazing, groundbreaking and wonderful.

Riceboy deserves a cult following and so much more.

And A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible going on hiatus made me sad.

The comics linked at my webpage correspond roughly with the ones I read.
http://vark.blogspot.com
# comic section bonobo conspiracy
# dex lives
# everybody loves esr
# ghastly
# least i could do
# alas a blog
# juvenile drivel
# filthy lies
# friendly hostility
# megatokyo
# monkey law
# penny arcade
# questionable content
# reality machine
# sinfest
# my webcomic
# choadwarrior
# boondocks
# websnark
# xkcd
# yourmometer
I should probably get around to adding tang and sexy losers.

xkcd is the only one where i'm on the forum and went to the meetup. I only recently added QC to that list - I probably found it via websnark. I've liked it for awhile but it only recently became a has it updated yet kinda read.

my own comic is at http://www.stripcreator.com/comics/arbi/ . it's not so much a comic in that there's no orginal art and there are no or few jokes - it's usually just me making some notes to myself about did i get my laundry done, or playing off other people's comic at www.stripcreator.com - which is this really cool easy to use automated comic generator thingy.
i first heard about it at www.tehsoapbox.net which  was wil wheaton's forum and is now sort of its own thing.

i checked this thread to see if i could find a new webcomic or two - i'm an internet addict- and there were a few leads.

update: i just spent two solid days reading better days. furries. yiffy twincestual ones, in the south, in the 80s, with plots and character development and stuph.

By now, every web comic I read has been mentioned at least twice, I believe.

My favorites are in no particular order QC, Something Positive, Looking For Group, Least I Could Do, Errant Story, and Order of the Stick. Errant Story is probably the only web comic I follow primarily because of it's story - it's nice to see the story progress in other web comics too, but more than any other web comic I follow it feels like it has a script. It doesn't wander aimlessly. Looking For Group is hilarious. The recognition factor for anyone who has played MMO's like World of Warcraft or Everquest should be sky high.

Others I read are PvPOnline, Penny Arcade, Sluggy Freelance, Wapsi Square, Sinfest, Shortpacked and Megatokyo.

Sexy Losers is/was fantastically funny and supremely unsuitable for reading at work. Shame it doesn't update any more. It's Walky was also a favorite before it turned into Joyce & Walky, which is lame.

In which Will details just what makes Riceboy amazing.

First of all it has a freshness of imagination and imagery that is almost unmatched among long-form story-heavy not-so-funny comics.  Not only is the art quite distinctive, but the entire world is so fresh in its sheer weirdness that it's always a delight to see what's coming next.  The oddness of the world's logic may make me want to talk about magical realism or surrealism or whatever, but in the end there's a wonderful dream-like quality that makes everything cohere in a very strange and unique way.  Everything makes sense in the world that is shown to us, yet in the oddest and most wonderful way.

Secondly the story has been engaging and now has a clear sense of direction.  In the past few weeks its become clear that this isn't going to be a plodding story--things move quite fast, yet slow enough to give us good portraits of the characters.  The rather brutal death of several speaking characters, the sheer inainity that the world seems to be headed for, are vividly portrayed, and create a sense of impending doom at times.  Yet the vivacity of the story and of the setting, of the characters that our titular hero encounters, serve to lighten this load and keep things consistently interesting and fun.

Finally there is quite a sense of mystery about the world, about the nature of what exactly our hero is doing, that captures a bit of what fantasy should be about--the mysterious, the inexplicable--not too much has been revealed to us about the world, so I'm always eager to discover more about it, and this can only add to the sense of wonder that this comic can create.

My favourites include: Scary Go Round, QC, xkcd, Penny Arcade, VG Cats (but mainly for posterity's sake at this point), Perry Bible Fellowship, A Softer World, Bunny, Cat and Girl, Natalie Dee, Stuff Sucks.

I have been reading Scary Go Round and QC the longest.  Both have fantastic characters.  But I think Scary Go Round has my favourite character ever.  Shelley Winters is just rad.

Questionable Content is actually the only one I read, so I guess it's my favorite.  I've tried to read a couple others, but honestley don't think any others are done as well, in terms of entertainment or story.

QC for the win!

I think my faves would be QC, Octopus Pie, Dresden Codak, idiot comics, Pixel, Gunnerkrigg Court and Cat and Girl.

I've got quite a few... but here are some favorites you may not have heard of  :-)

Perfect Stars - the fact that I can't understand what the comic is about every now and then could be what makes it fascinating for me. Plus it's beautiful.
Copper - Gorgeous art, simple morals, and reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes.
Punks and Nerds - Every now and then this comic has references to some of the most ridiculous things. Like Doug.
The Perry Bible Fellowship - This one's pretty popular. It's got lasers, dinosaurs, and robots every now and then. There's also a variety of art and humor.
Elsie Hooper - This is hardcore.

I like most of the popular webcomics too. Including this guy  :-D

Megatokyo is definitely my favourite. I am probably one of the few who preferred it after Rod left and it got all "emo".

I don't really read many comics online, the only others I can think of are Xkcd, and sinfest. Both of which I read religously.

I also read QC of course, although I tend to save it up for a week or 2 before I read as my brain can't cope with tiny doses, I like to read a few pages at a time.

I'll only link to the ones that haven't probably already been mentioned.
My two favourites:

Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/) - 'There is no overkill, there is only "Open fire" and "Reload".'
Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/) - "Und any plan vere you lose your hat iz?"  "A bad plan?"

in no particular order:
Skin Horse (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/skinhorse/series.php) - Shaenon Garrity's latest comic, a collaberation with Jeffery Wells, well worth a read, in fact look at Smithson while you are there.
Something Positive
Gunnerkrig Court
Zebra Girl - updating again, but sporadically.
XKCD
Sinfest
Crimson Dark (http://www.davidcsimon.com/crimsondark/index.php) - A good space opera.
No Need For Bushido (http://www.noneedforbushido.com/) - Feudal Japanese comedy with a western twist, this is NOT a wannabe manga.
The Phoenix Requiem (http://requiem.seraph-inn.com/) - Arts Angels' latest fantasy.
Kagerou (http://www.electric-manga.com/) - not your average fantasy webcomic, read it.
Irregular Webcomic! (http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/) - A humorous Lego webcomic with 8 or so seperate stories that occasionally intersect.

runner-ups include Missmab.com and Kawaii Not.
edit: OHSHIT. forgot XKCD! xkcd.com is indeed on the top of my list. I forgot it because it's just not colorful and pleasing to memory, but it is indeed the best comic ever.

8-Bit Theater (although it's been a while since I read that, I need to catch up!)
The Book of Biff
AppleGeeks

My #1 is definitely Penny Arcade. A lot of the game-centric jokes fall kind of flat, but the dialog is always brilliant. The strips that are mostly about the character's conversations, with gaming taking the backseat, are the ones that really shine.

Others I'm quite fond of are QC (natch), Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, Grumps, Shortpacked!, and Badass Muthas.

Even witht he disclamer of this thread not having a post in atleast 120 days, I'm positng anyway since I don't read the forums too much and found this thread while looking for something else.

I tend to be a "one webcomic guy" in that unless I lose interest in whatever it is I'm reading, i tend to stick with that.  With that being said, I QC is all that I read...that is still active.  I've been reading it for a looooong time, but before that I read Exploitation Now (http://www.exploitationnow.com/comic.php?date=2000-07-05) by Poe.  Hands down one of my favorite webcomics ever.  The comic has since ended and is in physical book form (and a reason I suggested at one point, along with many others I'd assume, that Jeph publish QC as such too).

So, my favorite current web comic is QC. I refer many people to it and one of the key points I mention about it is being able to watch the progression and evolution of Jeph's art.  It's great to see such an improvement right before your very eyes!!!

That's all I have to say, now back to my original purpose of reading through the boards :)

PS.  Happy New Year peeps!

Favourite?  That's hard because I like lots but:

Sea of Insanity (http://fractuslux.comicgenesis.com/) is a slice of life comic about a nymph (from Greek mythology) and the people she shares her flat with.  I like it because it's well drawn, has interesting characters and manages to feel real.

A Girl and Her Fed (http://www.agirlandherfed.com/) is a story about a reporter who finds that she's been added to a watch list.  The murder of a Senator's aide brings them together as they investigate the death.  Added to that is the ghost of Benjamin Franklin, a chip inserted in the Fed's brain and a talking koala.  I like it because it's a fun sci-fi conspiracy thriller.

Clan of the Cats (http://clanofthecats.com/) is a story about a woman who turns into a panther when she gets stressed.  I like it because it has a mixture of epic stories (current story is Chelsea v Dracula) and every day stories.

Weregeek (http://www.weregeek.com/) follows the lives of geeks.  The geeks in the comic are much like that in the real world except, when people really geek out, they release a beast that is their inner geek (and there are hunters that follow them).  I like it because it's a slice of life story about geeks.

Reqiem (Spiderforest) (http://requiem.spiderforest.com/) is a computer rendered sci-fi story set on another world.  In many ways similar to ours but with some technology differences.  The story is a political thriller about the lead up to a large war.  I like it because it has an interesting premiss and it's fun to try and guess what the characters should do.

Sandra and Woo (http://www.sandraandwoo.com/) is a light-hearted slice of life comic about a girl and her pet raccoon.  Unknown to anyone else but Sandra, Woo can actually talk.  I like it because it is light-hearted and has lots of quirky characters.

Xylia (http://xyliatales.com/) is a story about a young man who discovers that he's half-faerie.  He has been constantly reincarnated and each time he falls for his true love Xylia.  It's a heart-warming tale.

Paradigm Shift (http://www.paradigmshiftmanga.com/) is the story of two police officers faced with a number of brutal killings.  They appear to be done by an animal but there are no animal tracks and there are more inconsistencies.  I like it because it's well drawn and an interesting take on Werewolves.

I'm quite fond of The Secret Knots (http://www.thesecretknots.com) by Juan Santapau. I guess you could call it a romantic comic, but there's more to it. A kind of subtlety. Most of what is written is between the lines. Every comic is like a small shutter window into a beautiful, perfect world. It gives me the feeling that there are millions upon millions stories hidden away behind that window, but you can only catch a glimpse of them every time the shutters open. And I kind of like it that way.

Surprised at some not mentioned:  (Note: I value impressive art)

Guilded Age - Amazing art, cohesive story, good characters, and funny humor - DON'T miss the Alt Texts (bring your mouse pointer over the panel and leave it still.)  Frequently the funniest part!

TemplarAz  (Templar, Arizona) - a pretty spectacular creation, a whole sociological study of a funny, scary, plausible near-future city, and Spike's art is AMAZING!

PennyandAggie has been mentioned, but Gisele Lagace does much more: my favorite is menagea3 - NOT! safe for work, but hysterically funny & sexy & well-drawn.  Also check out her coolcatstudio for a cute, safeforwork comic like pennyandaggie.

Backward Compatible - no one mentioned this??  Smartl & well-done gamer comic.

In no particular order, these are my favorites:

Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net/)- I don't think anything more needs to be said.
Girls With Slingshots (http://www.gwscomic.com/)- The artwork is adorable, the storyline is interesting, and I wish the characters were my friends. Because it's also a slice-of-life comic, it's a nice complement to QC when I'm catching up on my dailies.
Blip (http://www.blipcomic.com/)- This one's a little less well-known. The plot is seriously fantastic, and Sage Leaves does a good job of keeping the reader in suspense every day. The whole comic is built on the concept of the creation of a girl who was never supposed to exist- god made a mistake. Really interesting stuff.
Hark! a Vagrant (http://www.harkavagrant.com/)- ANDREW JACKSON IS AS TOUGH AS OLD COCK.
Octopus Pie (http://www.octopuspie.com/)- Another essential webcomic, of course.
Wasted Talent (http://www.wastedtalent.ca/)- Wasted Talent is an autobiographical webcomic revolving around the lives of Angela (Jam the Engineer), Trevor (her husband), and her coworkers.
xkcd (http://www.xkcd.com/)- Yeah, needs no introduction.
Hyperbole and a Half (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/)- This webcomic (blog?) is really something else. Allie Brosh has a quirky sense of humor, and it shows. Her illustrations are all done in the Mac equivalent of MS Paint, but they're all very well-done.
Anders Loves Maria (http://anderslovesmaria.reneengstrom.com/)- AKA Anders Has Sex With Anything That Breathes. Very NSFW, but the artwork and plot are compelling.
Something Positive (http://somethingpositive.net/index.html)- I don't keep up with this one much anymore. The combination of tiny text, clumsy navigation, and NSFW ads keep me away, but it's still considered an "essential."
Johnny Wander (http://www.johnnywander.com)- Made up of a boyfriend/girlfriend team; largely autobiographical. Incredible artwork, cute, and funny.
Max VS Max (http://www.maxvsmax.com/)- I discovered this one not too long ago. It deals with several Christian themes throughout, but it's charming enough to the point where nonbelievers would find it interesting anyways.

1. Goblins (http://www.goblinscomic.com) - Fantastic artwork (pun!), excellent characters, interesting story and premise, and well written.
2. QC - This is kind of a given.
3. Supernormal Step (http://www.supernormalstep.com) - Wonderfully drawn, well written. Characters and plot a a touch jumpy but still very good.
4. Sinfest  (http://www.sinfest.net)- Contastantly amusing, well designed and occasionally poignant.
5. Gunnerkrigg Court (http://www.gunnerkrigg.com) Well drawn, bizarre and fascinating world and interesting plot development and characters.

Honorable mention:

El Goonish Shive (http://www.egscomics.com) - For the sheer degree of improvement. Started out pretty damn horrible, now it's well drawn and interesting.

Webcomics I am reading and in no particular order of favor:  QC, Misfile, and Extra Ordinary.  Comics I've enjoyed in the past:  Least I Could Do, Lozers, Fanboys, and Order of the Stick.

QC I enjoy just because of the character interactions, Misfile is something I started reading and just haven't stopped...  I couldn't even tell you if I like it or not, and Extra Ordinary is odd and funny.
