Ok, I am kind of freaking out. I love these guys, as do a lot of people I know. I took it as a given though, that some people would not like them. I had never heard anyone tell me they didn't like the B-52s, but I just assumed those people were out there.
So my friends birthday is coming up, and he is extremely into Black Metal, and all the bizzare sub-genres that accompany it. He knows more about metal than any other person I have ever met. He hasn't even developed that obsessive way of talking about it that signifies a massive nerd of a particular genre, its like it has just absorbed him. I naturally assumed he would hate the B-52s, so I threw Private Idaho into the playlist I am making a mix CD for him with titled "Songs you will fucking HATE"
So I'm talking to a mutual friend of ours, and I bring up the CD, and run down the track listing. The mutural friend nods, and agrees that "Yes, he will REALLY hate that" to most of the tracks. When I mention the B-52s, he stops and looks at me.
"You know, he is pretty much a gigantic obsessive B-52s fan right?"
My jaw is agape.
Apparently his entire musical taste can be summed up as "Black Metal, a few other non black metal bands, and the B-52s", I know, not too broad, but he has picked something and pretty much become it.
So yes, I'm rambling here, but my question is, are there people out there that DONT like the B-52s? I am seriously scared now. I always assumed their kitsch lyrics, buzzed down sound and their general impression that everyone in the band was shooting smack and taking acid at the same time would have turned quite a few people off.
I guess I just want confirmation that there at least ONE person out there who doesn't like them.

I HATE the B-52s.
...just kidding. I love 'em.
-
are there people out there that DONT like the B-52s?
Yes. They're more commonly known as "corpses".
-
I will put myself at risk of flaming and say that I have yet to even listen to them... I shall do so........
Now.
*edit*
upon further review of the B-52s, I realize that I have listened to them before... I feel silly now... No, I probably wouldn't listen to them generally, but I guess if I were in a lighter mood I would.

I do not like crazy obsessive Black Metal fans.
I do like the B-52s.
-
I don't like them.
But then again I have never listened to them ;)
-
Everybody had matching towels.
The B-52's are so bloody infectious, I do believe it's impossible to dislike them.
-
The only song I've ever heard by them is, I think 'Love Shack', which I thought was a festering pile of mindless shite, so you've got one.
-
Seriously, download Rock Lobster. It's features a few of the greatest moments in music.
-
Fine, but I will very much lambast it and then go back to listening to The Ghastly Ones
-
I doubt it. You'll fall in love with how quikry it is and listen to only Raffi until you die.
-
It is SIGNIFICANTLY slowing down the process of downloading the directors cut of the Wicker Man. This better be good...
EDIT: Not as bad as I expected. The surf bassline and whatnot was pretty cool, and the vocals didn't piss me off much except for that woman going 'aaaah' in the background. I didn't hear any of these greatest moments in music though, and they had plenty of time to throw them in, in that six minutes of endlessly repeating whatnot. Not ear-rending, not too boring, but I could name a shitload of better things, even in the same style.
Like, ironically, The Ghastly Stomp!
Also, I still hate Love Shack so much that a halfway decent song ain't saving them.
-
I'll be the second to have a strong distate of B-52s. To kitschy (sp) and I can't stand that dude that sings.
-
They're pretty cool, but in small doeses, just because of the singer. I think it's really cool, and so much better than most indie singers (what, I hate their vocal tone, it just makes them sound like they're out-of-tune all the time, but I got into music through concert music, so that stuff is really important to me).
-
How can anyone possibly hate Fred Schneider??
He puts the Fab in Fabulous!
I saw them back on the Cosmic Thing tour. Good times. I regret not being able to see them before Ricky died. He was an incredible guitar player.
-
Well, his voice is rather distinct, and anything that's distinct attracts an extra helping of both praise and criticism, plus it can be kind of grating at times.
-
Pfff, whatever KharBevNor. You sold out like 4000 posts ago.
Nah, I'm aware that it's not a "great" song, but it's a fun song, makes me smile. The B-52's are kind of a "I'm feeling silly" listen, rather than a "I'd like to listen to music" listen.
Still, I love em.

I'm willing to put foward "Rock Lobster" as a great song. Hell, that whole album is amazing. The line "There's a moon in the sky/It's called the moon" is just the icing on this amazingly awesome cake.

Am i the only person that can't help but laugh every time he thinks of Peter Griffon playing Rock Lobster on an acoustic guitar? That's the first image that came to my mind upon seeing this thread.
