Title: Survival Horror, Y'all
Post by: Shaft on 20 Mar 2006, 16:50
Ok guys - After my teenage years of not really having anything to do with "scary" games, I've developed some kind of fetish for them as I stagger into manhood. Bay Sick Lee, I'm going to get a few of these fangled "survival horror" games, and after scouting around t'web I've come to the conclusion that good games to buy would be:

Silent Hill 1-4
Project Zero/Fatal Frame 1-2
Forbidden Siren
Clock Tower
Haunting Grounds
Farenheit

Any thoughts? Any suggestions? Cool!

I agree.

There are key moments in RE that are still scary. Most were when I was younger though.

I mean, Resident Evil 4 is worth mentioning by itself. <3 that game.

Well I find Creepy atmospheric scares more entertaining than boo scares. I played resident evil at a friends' house once and it wasn't atmospherically scary it just had shit popping up and biting you. Having said that the other day I also played the gamecube remake of Resi and I couldn't put it down. Plus it looks damn good.

I've had problems playing Condemned by myself in the dark... I think of it less as a game and more of a crap your pants simulator.

Not really survival horror. Not really scary, even.
Yay for Silent Hill 1, though.

Was I the only one who liked Resident Evil 2? I thought William was many times more awesome than Nemesis. (Not in the end, though.)

System Shock 2 definitely qualifies as 'survival horror.'
So does the Half-Life mod Heart of Evil.

A really liked RE2 as well.  Absolutely dripping with creepy atmosphere, especially early in the game (police station, etc).  And it had not only two of my favorite handguns, but indeed unicorn stones as well.

And I've just tapped out my knowledge of the genre.

Resident Evil 2 is king, for me. Possibly because it was my first survival horror, possibly because I played the crap out of it, and possibly because it was hell of awesome.

RE3 was just more of the same, although it had its moments.

The first Silent Hill was pretty scary, but I think the intro (the bit before the school) was probably the most frightening bit - it seemed to get repetitive and thus less scary later on.

A lot of these games are kind of rip-offs of each other though. Project Zero was pretty predictable, from what I played of it.

Even RE4 seemed a bit hum drum to me, although this may have been because so many people were going "OMG SO AWESOME!" that when I played it it just seemed a bit pedestrian - a new camera angle and crazed villagers instead of zombies (the latter point being a negative, because everyone knows zombies > all) were the only differences.

Resident Evil 3 was my first, and probably favourite.  I've been meaning to take a look at RE4 but haven't gotten round to it...

Does anyone remember that RE game that you played with the G-con?  I think it was called Survivor.  Man, that game was terrible.  Also, Dino Crisis!  That game was pretty average too.

I'm a big nerd for video game stories. I've never played any of the Resident Evil games, but I know every inch of the whole story from start to RE4.

Wesker is just full of awesome.

No "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth? (http://www.callofcthulhu.com/)"

They certainly did capture the "What the hell is up with Insmouth?" feel.
