im posting here cos it wouldnt let me reply elsewhere.
when i asked people about bands that sound similar to arcade fire, i didnt intend on being blasted. i think thats just stupid.
i started reading this comic ages ago and when i stumbled onto the RL, i downloaded arcade fire and futureheads, amongst others and i liked it. so whether or not this "idea" had been "done to death", i really dont care. i was asking for help, and didnt get any. so thankyou. peace out.
ps. when did music start making people so angry and "holier than thou"?

Hey, I don't think anyone was trying to come off as rude or mean in that thread, but they're right, there are a lot of threads dedicated to reccomendations. (I too think a sticky would be nice for that thread). If you look at the thread, they linked threads that dealt with what you wanted to know.
Just look around next time first is basically what went on in the last thread.

Look, when we've answered the same question about five times (with a conservative estimate), and the answers are still availible, it starts to get tired. Rizzo posted a number of threads that are about music recommendation, so you could, you know, find one of them. I'd personally consider that helpful. Also, if you thought that was being blasted, then you've led one sheltered live, man.

You like Arcade Fire. Off the top of my head;
Interpol, Modest Mouse, Of Canada, Archtecture in Helsinki, The Decemberists, Mogwai, Blood Brothers, The Go! Team.
Those are off the top of my head. I don't listen to any of them but everyone mentions them so often they must be good right?

shit, if there was a section where you graded music, not on a scale but just a single recommendation per person per band/album with the idea that the better or more beloved the band the more people will vote for it. Then give them an upper limit since we have dietised some bands, like BSS. Then once they hit that upper limit they get moved into a new QC "greatest hits" section and removed so people can continue to vote.
IE: Most of us can agree Bloc Party is awesome, but I doubt as many of you love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as much as I do. So it *will* get recommended but not as highly. And once things reach that max and are moved to the winners circle, they will also disappear off the current list. Thus keeping the voting somewhat current because most old awesome thing will make it to the recommended list. Whereas up and coming awesome will be climbing the ranks.
In hindsite, I was fleshing it out as I thought of things this is EXACTLY the billboard top 100 but you know. For us.
Anyway, since I thought of it, I think we should call it hte Ryan Theory of Hipster Relativity(In part because it sounds Einsteinian(Ryanstein?), and in part because it really is all about how things stack up relative to eachother.)

If you click "Search" in the top-right and look for "recommendations" you'll probably find enough ideas to last you a year.
