I couldn't decide where to put this; either in I like fish or here. But it's music-related so here we go.
I need suggestions on songs that have banging guitar riffs. Chugga-chugga is good, but I'd like to hear some diverse thoughts on this. I need to be able to wail, as I will be air guitaring to it.
Some thoughts I've had are:
Hair bands
Led Zeppelin
AC/DC - Long way to the top
Offspring - Kids aren't alright (the opening riff)
Local H - ... a few songs in mind.
But I need some other input on this, if anyone has other suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

3 Inches of Blood, Justice-era Metallica?
-
riffs eh...
Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo
Kyuss - Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop
Fu Manchu - Squash That Fly
QOTSA - Regular John
Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
Motörhead - Overkill
Turbonegro - Turbonegro Must Be Destroyed (is that the name of the song? been awhile)
Monster Magnet - Powertrip
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
-
Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer were co-owners of the idea of "riff" in the first place, until Kyuss picked it up after they dropped it. Kyuss owns it to this day, and Queens of the Stone Age rents it out constantly.
Really, though, the songs that stand out the most for me in terms of their riff are:
Mondo Generator - Like You Want
Parchman Farm - Say Yeah
The Bevis Frond - Maybe
Masters of Reality - Kill The King
Kyuss - any song at all
Dozer - Man Made Mountain, The Hills Have Eyes
500 Ft. of Pipe - Marshmallow
Buffalo - The Prophet
Desert Sessions 1+2 - Screamin' Eagle
Dead meadow - Drifting Down Streams, Good Moanin', The White Worm
Blue Cheer - Parchman Farm, Babylon
ZZ Top - Precious and Grace
Black Sabbath - Into The Void, N.I.B.
The Black Keys - Thickfreakness, If You See Me, Till I Get My Way
Baby Woodrose - Pouring Water
Queens of the Stone Age - If Only, Walkin' On The Sidewalks, Mexicola, God is On the Radio, 18 AD
Hope this helps.
-
Bloodhound Gang - Most of their songs have massive metal riffs in. Boneheaded, but great.
Radiohead - Paranoid Android, Lucky
Graham Coxon - Standing On My Own Again
Marcy Playground - Hotter Than The Sun
Mad Capsule Markets - Tribe (the guitar riff during the bass solo is fucking brilliant)
-
I'd go for early machinehead. Davidian, ten ton hammer ...
-
The Heartwork album from Carcass.
Edge of Sanity - Darkday
Dornenreich - Schwarz Schaut Tiefsten Lichte
Anata - Entropy Within
Tiamat - Smell Of Incense
Acid Bath - What Color is Death
Type O Negative - I Don't Wanna Be Me
Skyclad - Spinning Jenny
It would help if we knew what you need it for. I just wrote the first songs that came to mind when you said chugga chugga ruffs and air guitar.

Thin Lizzy - The Boys are Back in Town.

So wait, only four bands know how to riff? I'd like to hear your logic behind that.

JR Ewing - Change Is Nothing (Everything Is)
but really...
Turbonegro - Get It On
It has the additional value of being fucking TRBNGR.

No, they're just significantly better at it than most other bands that exist, particularly among bands that are as well-known as they are. Everyone else is just half-assing it compared to them (obviously exceptions are all over the place ... this was just my way of saying that anyone looking for killer riffs should be all over these 4 bands at the very least.)

Fair enough:
For anyone who wants to know what this is for:

I WANT TO GO TO FINLAND. If I go, I'm definitely taking a QC shirt with me.
Wow... thanks for all the help! I think this is more than enough for me to go through, and thankfully I am familiar with some of the material! I'll post here if/when this happens.
EDIT: The vid nescience pointed out is LAST year's winner. They're doing a whole new batch of tryouts, Chicago's is soon!

'No ATD-I covers?'

well, considering that most peoples initial impression of tmv was that it was omar and cedric running away (very quickly) from at the drive in, yeah, that's what a lot of people thought.......but a friend of mine said that at one of the big day out performances this year, they played enfilade. wheather this is true or not, is up to speculation until he provides some evidence. however it is cool to think about.
-
Well they approved and released a best of album so they must still like SOME of the songs.
