What documentaries do you like? My exposure to them has been somewhat limited, but I've seen and really like:
The Five Obstructions (one of the best movies I've ever seen)
The Filth and the Fury
Super Size Me
some of the Michael Moore docs
I've been wanting to get into the Up series (7 Up, 14 Up, 28 Up, et cetera) but haven't gotten around to seeing any of them yet

two completely different worlds and styles (musically & cinematically) but both equally fascinating and entertaining incites into the lives of 'rock legends'

some more good ones; Brother's Keeper and the Paradise Lost movies. BK is along the same lines as PL, but not nearly as infuriating

Forgotten Silver was pretty good though it is not a documentary per sé.
There is a really good danish documentary called Den Højeste Straf (http://imdb.com/title/tt0252526/)(Maximum Penalty).
It is about an ex-leader of the danish communist party who goes to Russia to find out what happened to a danish communist who disappeared under Soviet rule.
Doing that he uncovers the horrors under Stalin, he visits Gulag among other things. It is very good and somewhat depressing.

The best ones I've seen, well I'd have to go with "Ghosts of Rwanda" as the best I've ever seen.  Its deep... real deep.  After that I'd like to say Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine", but in his other movies he uses tactics that remove some of his credibility.  He's got a good message, but he could do better.  HBO's Band of Brothers: We Stand Alone Together was really goodas well.  It brought the a more human light to WWII.

- The Staircase (8-part T.V. series).

thing i always seem to find about micheal moore stuff (particularly the newer books/films/tv appearences) is that while his heart often seems to be headed in the right direction he ruins it by spending far too much time stroking his own ego and using sensationalist cheapshots...which like you say, only goes to discredit some of the good stuff he's capable of.

A few flicks we had to watch for our documentaries module when I did Film:


Don't Look Back - The original tour documentary, feauring Bob Dylan going nuts as he goes electric.

Got to agree with Capturing the Friedmans.

When We Were Kings- even if you have no interest in boxing whatsoever, and I don't, still a terrific film.

The Thin Blue Line- a murder solved by a documentary maker? More biased and tricksy than even Mike Moore, but still fascinating

Oooh The Corporation was REALLY good IMO. I liked that one.

Also, Michael Moore Hates America is a fun little documentary. Its a good, mmm... counterpoint, in a way.

Thank you.  It would be great if he just did his job and that was the end of it.  For example, some of the things he did in the "Awful Truth' were great, but he still managed to work his own ego in that.  

Aw well, we can't have our cake, and look at it, and paint a picture of it and eat too.
