Title: Albums that flow nicely into other albums
Post by: McTaggart on 06 Apr 2006, 06:10
I was listening to Emiliana Torrini's Fisherman's Woman album and, noticing it coming to an end in a few minutes I cued up another album; Stay Human by Michael Franti and Spearhead.

It was awesome how well the last track on Fisherman's Woman led into Stay Human. Anyone else noticed albums (or tracks I suppose) that do this too?

If you listen to the Pixies' Trompe le Monde right after Jesus & Mary Chain's Automatic you hear some eerie similarities.

Because they are Gods among men.

As far as albums that flow well into each other:

Lucky Nine - True Crown Foundation Songs/Hundred Reasons - Kill Your Own
Radiohead - OK Computer/Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (hmm..odd that both of them have a sucky closing track.)
Nirvana - Nirvana/Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
Weezer - Weezer (Blue)/Marcy Playground - MP3
Blur - The Best Of/Graham Coxon - Happiness In Magazines
Nick Cave - The Boatman's Call/Nick Cave - No More Shall We Part

Although I've only heard the single "Island somethingorother", David Gilmour's new solo album sucks ass.

When the hell is Waters' solo album coming out? Roger Waters Online (http://www.rogerwatersonline.com/index.html) hasn't been updated in like 4.5 months...

On an Island. And I listened to it for a bit in HMV today. I thought it was pretty nice, kind of mellow.

I fucking LOVE Gilmour's new album. I masturbate over the sleeve.

It's only taken him 14 years to make dude; I doubt he's going to put a rush on.

some led zeppelin album (sorry i forgot which one) flows PERFECTLY into metallicas ride the lightning. it some how comes out sounding like the same song (if you listen to them back to back with no pause) for a second until Fight Fire With Fire gets all intense.

Cat Power- You Are Free and The Greatest

"The Greatest" sounds like it was meant to follow "Evolution".

Iron and Wine-Our Endless Numbered Days into any lighthearted, but still kind of heavy alternative rock. Example: The Presidents Of The United States Of America.
 Pink Floyd..the ULTIMATE.

And if you sandwich in the Apostle of Hustle album and chuck in the EP To Be You And Me at the very end, it becomes EVEN MORE AWESOME.

SAW85-92 -> FSoL - Accelerator

Underworld - A Hundred Days Off -> Leftfield - Rhythm and Stealth ->  Fluke - Risotto -> Crystal Method - Tweekend

Dntel - Life is Full of Possibilities -> Funkstorung - Disconnected

Mobb Deep - Murda Muzik -> NaS - Stillmatic

DJ Pierre - Phuture -> Luke Vibert - Kerrier District

And listening to McLusky's entire discography back-to-back is quite an experience.  Though you'll have a concussion at the end of the experience, if not brain damage.

Ever listen to Zappa's albums in any order, but like, consecutively? It's pretty awesome.

David Bowie - Low into Brian Eno - Another Green World

Very predictable, I know.  Better ones to come...

Cornelius - Point into David Sylvian Secrets of the Beehive

Ellen Allien & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles into La Dusseldorf - Individuellos

I have tried to find good album pairs and it's sometimes difficult to find good off-the-wall pairs, but it's great when you can find 'em.

I've noticed a flaw to this thread, I don't have most of these albums. I've only been able to try the Nick Cave/Nick Cave one (thanks Dynamite, I'm pretty surprised I haven't played these back to back before. Probably because Boatman's Call is the album that I neglect the most.)

Try 'Lumpy Gravy' into  'We're Only In It For The Money'. Like parts one and two of a giant masterpiece.

The Birthday Party- Prayers on Fire into The Stooges- Fun House.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless seem to segue quite nicely into each other, regardless of which is played first.

Maybe it's because they're both so goddamned awesome.

While we're mentioning Zappa...
What's like Hot Rats and Boat too Late?

Bit more of a stretch from the early days to his comedy days, but still pretty good. 'Teenage Prostitute' rules. It needed to be said!

I dunno how many of these I've already said, but some of them may be pretty obvious because they're by the same band and are like companion pieces.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused In The Comatorium/Frances The Mute

Pink Floyd - The Wall/The Final Cut
Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse Of Reason/The Division Bell

The Beatles - Rubber Soul/Revolver

Radiohead - Kid A/Amnesiac

Queen - A Night At The Opera/A Day At The Races
Queen - The Works/A Kind Of Magic

Sometimes, when I have a lot of time to spare, I like to run Dream Theaters Train of Thought album into 2112 by Rush. Its not that they go together much better than any other album as such, so much as it is a giant nerd-gasm.

My iTunes library goes from Arch Enemy straight into Architecture in Helsinki.

It's surprisingly good.

Supertramp - Crime of the Century into Acid Mothers Temple - Minstrel of the Galaxy. It's like, after we go through silly blues quasi prog, we go into free form improv space acid rock.
