OK, here's the deal: I just bought an HDTV. My computer and consoles (and their router) have until now been kicking it in a room other than where the TV lives. I want to move the consoles but not the computer, and I don't want to string a bunch of cables through the house.

SO. I've decided to set up a wireless network, at least for the consoles. My questions are thus:

Does anyone have recommendations for a good wireless router? I've looked at some Linksys ones that let me plug cables into the back and have antennae, but the reviews I've read aren't positive on the brand.

Second, are there any network adapters that work for all consoles? I know the Xbox 360 has its own, and there are some on the market that say they work for PS2, Xbox and GameCube. I don't want to buy more than one adapter, if possible.

Hope this is making sense. I'm dumb enough about wireless networks that I'm afraid all this is sounding like half-informed gobbledygook. I'd appreciate any advice (and price ranges, I'd like to keep it under $200). Thanks any and all.

Alternately, does anyone know if it would work to just get a USB dongle to make a wifi access point out of my computer, then use a network adapter for the consoles? Seems like it would be cheaper that way.

USB dongles are generally network connections.  Can it route?  I'm not too familiar with the market these days, but you'll no doubt need a router of some description for the network to function.

I have a Linksys wireless router that I find suitable for my purposes.  If you're having trouble with reception, get a booster antenna (screws into the antenna spot).  And for God's sake turn the security on!  Any inconvenience will be offset by a distinct lack of leechers!  Also, make the password unthinkably complex, then post it under the router.  If they're that close, then they probably already have access anyway.

From my experience with my linksys router, I can maintain a workable connection about half a block away, outside my house, but it depends on the quality of the receiving device that you're using. My PSP and Laptop work well with the Linksys router, but my second PC in the back room with a Belkin PCI slot reciever gets a crap connection. So yeah... router good, receivers meh.

Thanks for the help, all. I ended up getting a linksys router and a gaming adapter. Didn't break the $200 mark, and it works just fine with the Xbox 360 (the Xbox and PSP are being finicky, though, so drat).
