Title: Rickenbacker's in the wild... (Help me be right)
Post by: Sydney on 11 Apr 2006, 03:48
I'm one of those people who has to always be right. But the thing is.. I always am, so there.

The story so far....
Theres this guy I sit by in one of my classes.. I don't have much choice really because he's the only other person in the class. But he's ok.. Theres just one problem. Not too long ago as we were doing a 'revision' lesson I borrowed a set of speakers from the teachers office and plugged my mp3 player in and played "Private Hell" By the Jam... and had to, as I do practically every time that track comes on, comment on how awesome the Rickenbacker bass sounds.
Now this guy plays guitar. He knows what a Rickenbacker is alright. But.. he says.... he dosn't like the look of it. *sigh* I know... some people are just... you know.. He thinks looks are really important and that Rickenbackers don't look cool.
So we had a "heated debate" on the matter..
My points are as follows.. Firstly, the looks don't matter when it sounds that good (and my god does a good Rickenbacker sound awesome..) Secondley, the Rickenbacker I speak of (something like one of these (http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=4003) I believe) looks damn good. So he thinks that no cool contemporary bands play Rickenbackers. Now this guy listens to Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys.. that sort of music. So friends, I ask for your help. Join the search for Rickenbackers in the wild, being played by "cool" bands. I have coincidentally seen a Rickenbacker base in a new Snowpatrol video. In the Editors video All Sparks, both the bass and lead are Rickenbackers (I think thats a nice trump card there). But I need more, so if you folks could post any sightings of Rickenbackers, I would be much obliged, cheers.

I won't see him for a couple of weeks now (easter break) so hopefully I'll have a nice long list by the start of term.

The poor bastard...

I've seen Against Me! use them and the Libertines use them so yeah, no decent contemporary bands. Sweet guitars though- if only I didn't get the urge to smash them every time I hold one.

I think Lemmy from Motörhead plays a rickenbacker, though I don't know if they are "cool" nowadays.

Geddy Lee played one.  These days I think he mainly plays a Fender, though.  I'm personally not a fan of them.  I like active pickups much better, and I think they look needlessly vintage.  You want a nice-looking instrument, go Modulus:

The Genesis model (pictured) is the most playable electric bass I've ever tried, and it sounds killer, too.

I'm having toruble finding good pics but Radiohead use Rickenbackers on some songs and I'm pretty sure Kim Deal from Sonic Youth has one of those 4003 basses.

If we're going down that road, Roger Waters played a Rickenbass on Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and Paul McCartney did at about the same time.

Yeah, I always get them confused, especially since I learned that they sang together in one song

Roger Glover from Deep Purple used them, not that model though. I've seen Geddy Lee using them, the Beatles used them (guitars and basses), especially George Harrison.  I think Noel Redding (one of Hendrix's bass players) used one, although maybe only on a few tracks. It was mentioned, but Roger Waters used them at least a couple times. The dude from Rainbow used one (Ritchie Blackmore's band after Deep Purple). I can't think of anyone else really. Of course none of these are modern bands, but Rush and Deep Purple are still making music. The point is all of these bands are/were popular and at some point touched a Rickenbacker

Steve Kille from Dead Meadow plays one, and the bass tone on Dead Meadow albums is ace and more ace.

You need to stop calling people freaks, especially a dead metal bassist of some esteem.

Radiohead, live at Glastonbury - good reference.

Considering that they are pretty much THE modern pop/art band of our time, this should get his attention some...

But really, what a silly disagreement! Just tell him to go cram his flying V up his ass, or whatever... Rickenbackers look freakin' sweet. Heck, even Chris Martin used one, and say what you want about Coldplay... but they'd definitely have the money to AFFORD the guitars that they want to play.

Oh, and old man Edge uses one too, then throws it to the ground in the Boston DVD. Pretty cool. Just edit the last bit... :D

I don't know the guy. He may have been pretty odd. But you were being pretty derisory for no reason.

I think Neil Halstead from Slowdive used Rickenbacker guitars, I saw him using one in the Alison or Morning Rise video.
