Title: surprising changes

I'm really enamored by songs that make some sudden shift, when it's completely unexpected. It can be changing time signatures, key, style, etc. The obvious example of this is the arcade fire, but I'm looking for more examples, and more variation of this sort. Math rock does this kind of change, only it isn't as accessible to me. The lovely feathers and wolf parade also do this sometimes. For example:

The Lovely Feathers - Photo Corners, Frantic
The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies), Crown of Love
Wolf Parade - I'll Believe in Anything

more stuff like that :-)
any suggestions?

Hm, no. I'm more fond of songs that can shake it up but still keep the same style.

"Freezer Burn/I Wanna Be Your Dog" by Sonic Youth and "Longstockings" by Lightning Bolt have the most extreme stylistic changes I can think of. Freezer Burn and I Wanna Be Your Dog are almost different songs, but cutting into I Wanna Be Your Dog like they do on Confusion makes them feel far more unified than they sound. And they're on the same track, too.

I could suggest a few more, but those two are the most impressive, and I'd just be recommending scattered songs and not albums or bands.

Go check out Mr. Bungle, amazing band with repeated, drastic changes of style within their songs. Caliornia would be a good album to start with, quite accesible.

The Sorrowful Wife by Nick Cave.

Starts off as a hardly bearable piano ballad; about three minutes in becomes a mass of noise.

Hiding All Away by Nick Cave; starts off with about eighteen verse/choruses, very restrained, musically, like a dog on a leash. Then out of nowhere is a random bridge about the war coming explodes into total noise and that keeps going to the fade out.

Oh, yeah, John Zorn is totally awesome, but probably more insane than what you are looking for. You should still check him out, it is very rewarding stuff if you can get into it. Also, Estradasphere might be something you're interested in.

Those Zorn pieces I mentioned. They're both 20 minutes long, and are written in memory of Zorn's favorite directors. I absolutly love it, but for someone who is'nt used to expirimental music it'll just be strange cacophony.

I would suggest starting from Zorn's Masada, working your way up to Electrice Masada, and then going to thoe pieces. Also, Mr. Bungle kicks ass.
