Yeah well I guess someone has changed the password on my sisters computer and I was wondering if there is any way of getting it back. I know there is something like deleting everything and starting new but she lost all her cd's that help her with that. So anything?
I feel stupid now. :-(

What password are you talking about? I bet I use about 10 passwords a day when working on the computer, so um...which one?

The Log On password. Someone changed it.

I'm not too sure about the cure beyond a reinstall (I don't use Windows a lot), but prevention of the problem is better. When you do get access again, set up another Admin account for yourself, and password protect it so that no one else knows it. That way, even when this happens, you've got a side door to get in and fix things.

Reinstall means format if you don't know the current pass.

Find out who it was that changed the password. Ask them to give you it then change it back.
If they won't beat them. If they just typed in a bunch of random letters/numbers and don't actually know the password (Or do you have to confirm the password when creating it?!? I don't use a password so I dunno) beat them more and make them sit and puinch random combinations of numbers/letters in till you get back into your computer. That could take them years. They probably deserved it.

Then you'll have to retrieve the pass from the perpetrators, like Nolaw suggested. Or lose data.

My friend also had the idea of removing the battery of the computer to let it reset or something but that didn't work either....and for beating up the person that suposedly changed it didn't work either. I got in trouble.

The program you need is called @stake LC4, it can find passwords in seconds. annoyingly symantec bought and scrapped it, but you can still get it from here:

just run it on another administrator account and it should find it. the trial doesnt have the brute force attack, but it should still get it.

That'll only reset passwords stored on your CPU (not passwords associated with XP). Taking the battery out is only effective on old computers with boot-processes that are completely unrelated to the OS you're using.

First of all if you are running xp home you can some times start up in safe mode. (F8 when the computer is booting) and then login using the administrator account and reset the other computer password.

Another option is saminside. It does a pretty good job of cracking passwords. The only trouble is the free version only does a brute force attack using the alphebet.

I have saminside running off a boot able XP cd so I can boot off the CD and crack passwords. I made it using Bartpe builder.

Xp passwords are easy to crack because in most cases they have somthing called LM hashes enabled. The LM hashes are some other hold over from older os's. They split up the passwords into 7 character segments and turns everything into uppercase. So having a password over 7 charaters doesn't make it more secure and mixing upper and lower case doesn't either. It helps for other systems but not for XP with the LM hashes turned on. You can turn them off but you have to stuff with regedit.

Can you make an administrator account and change the password from there? Or at least open up permissions so you can salvage what you're after.

Burn it to a CD.
Boot from the CD.
Set the account to have a blank password.
Done.

You all suck because you guys weren't useful! Seriously. You posted the same link, but I actually SAID to use it, not said "helpful information may be found here." So HA. More points for me!
Also, I've fixed the password using that method, and it works quite well.
