Title: Heritage Metal
Post by: acantha on 02 May 2006, 11:24
Apparently this is a thing now. i'm just sorta stumbling across it, by way of a couple of bands. the first is called Witch. they have on album out (avail on itunes). reminds me a lot of black sabbath, except better.
other band is called "The Sword". they've got an album called Age of Sorrows. fantasy themed, ridonculously epic guitar work.

sort of thing i imagine dora listening to.

anyway, curious if anyone knows these bands, has recommendations for other stuff in this vein.

I don't know if it's what you want but whenever someone mentions epic and fantasy themed I want to recommend Kamelot. Because Kamelot is amazing.

Whenever someone mentions Kamelot i think of  this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8455484922324998664&q=monty+python+camelot&pl=true) movie.

They are a great band, but get -50 points for the name.

Heritage metal just made me think of the Eiffel tower.

Heritage metal makes me think bands like Forefather, Ancient Rites, Bathory, Folkearth and Waylander.

Ie, pretty much my favourite metal bands.

I mean, as in with a name like 'heritage metal' (never heard of it btw) I would imagine, like, tales of times gone and nostalgia, and a whiff of national romance, and, most importantly, Vikings.

I mean, if I was to think of one song to sum up this genre I'd never heard of, it would be Ancient Rites - (Ode to Ancient) Europa

"I still hear the ancient warcry
I still hear the ancient battlecry

The great old European heroes, the proud old European names
Like snow now melted for sunlight, today their lustre gleams

Gone are the great old empires, the proud old names are low
That shed a glory over the ancient world, a thousand years ago
But wandering the medieval cities beholding our ancient lands
Albion, Saxonia, land of Franks: constructed by our ancestor's hands

I still hear the ancient warcry
I still hear the ancient battlecry

In the country of our fathers on the land and sea
Can you hear a million voices? Thy forefathers summoning thee!
Summoning thee!

Many centuries ago, beyond the hazy space
In Brittany, Eire and Caledonia there dwelt a mighty race
Celts they were called, like their holy oaks, they had a giant grace

Slavonian kingdoms, empires and tribes
Defending their ancient lands and rights
From invading hordes from the East
Thousands slaughtered, men and beast

I still hear the ancient warcry
I still hear the ancient battlecry!!"

I've never heard heritage metal applied to these bands before.  Like Khar, my mind immediately went to Viking and Folk Metal (btw, just got ahold of Tyr, mindblowing!)

The kind of bands you are talking about are usually referred to as retro metal, traditional metal, doom metal, or even sludge metal (though they aren't pure sludge)  Also, a pretty typical descriptor is indie metal, because for some unknown reason its hip to like doom right now, and these bands especially.

And no they are not better than Black Sabbath.  They are fun, but they admit what they are doing is Sabbath worship, not being better than Sabbath.

There is no such thing as being better that Black Sabbath. Just like there is no such thing as temperature below absolute zero or more than one flying spaghetti monster.

You can get close to Black Sabbath, oh, you can get damn close. But you're never gonna quite get there.

If these are Sabbath-a-like bands then

a) I'm checking them out.
b) You need to check out Orange Goblin, Cathedral, Witchfinder General, St. Vitus, Pentagram, Goatsnake, Reverend Bizarre, Candlemass and Count Raven.

Also Earthride, which sounds like Black Sabbath with the ghost of Lemmy on vocals.

As long as we're talking Sabbath worship, don't forget Sleep, who took Black Sabbath's sound to places it really should not go back in the early 90's.  Basically, think about what would happen if Sabbath smoked about 3 times as much weed. and played twice as loud.

Witch is awesome, in my opinion, but I have to agree that nobody has ever done it better than Sabbath.

But seriously, guys, Sleep.

That's really weird. I was just listening to Sleep...Holy F***ing Mountain!

Strange but awesome coincidence.  Yeah, Sleep is pretty awesome.  Basically any stoner/doom metal band will is just doing Sabbath worship. Definitely check Khar's list of stoner/traditional doom bands, most of them are a little doomier than The Sword, but don't let that stop you.  In addition to that list, check out YOB, a band Jeph has talked about.

I'm just now getting into Witchcraft, another band in the same vein as most of these.  They're pretty sweet, definitely worth some listening.

I find it funny, though, that Witch and Witchcraft are both current bands with similar sounds.

The Melvins are about as close to Sabbath worship as my tastes go, except for Sabbath themselves, who are above petty distinctions like genre.  Sleep and High on Fire are pretty cool too.

Youre not supposed to be confused! You are supposed to slay kittens! Have we taught you nothing?

Also, listen to Sleep.

Well.. yeah, but they're so delicious!

Plus, the "satanic cults" (angsty 13 year old who listen to Cradle Of Filth) here in Israel like to abuse kittens. The whole "SLAY KITTENS" thing is a joke amongst metalheads here.

Oh man.

Seriously, I am as occultic as you like, and I would beat someone who harmed a kitten to death with my bare hands.

Harming a kitten basically gets you sent back in time to Pol Pot era Cambodia, but you break the time machine and so you are stuck in the same day, WORKING TO DEATH OVER AND OVER AGAIN

And 'Holiday in Cambodia' is playing all the time.

...The specially commissioned McFly cover of Holiday in Cambodia, that is.

It doesn't exist.

Except in my nightmares.

(McFly are the worst pop-punk band EVER.)

Pop punk? covers of Holiday in Cambodia? There is a way that a cover of that song is bad.

Also, you are an ass to treat someone to pop punk while they toil.
