Post by: Faker on 04 May 2006, 05:30
Starwars.com has a story up confirming that the original versions of episodes 4, 5, and 6 are gonna be released on dvd in september.

No more hayden christenson, no more cgi jabba, han will shoot first, the return of the original ewoks song!

However it means lining george lucas's pockets once more...

I didn't think Lucas would do it, but I guess the lure of the dollar was too strong. Honestly, I thought they would have to pry the original versions from Georgie-boy's cold, dead hands.

This is good news! I avoided the remastered version DVDs, but I will definitely be picking up these.

I was pretty sure they'd do it eventually, too many people were asking for it for them not to.  Good thing I didn't get the fucked-with versions.

george lucas isn't dumb, he's brilliant! he's gotten people to purchase the same three movies three times now! (once on vhs, once on the fuckered dvds, and now again on the fixed ones)

Yep. The ultimate way to make people triple dip.

Luckily, I've never bother to buy the Special Editions or DVDs, so I'm ready for these with open arms!

Don't get too excited yet.  The original theatrical cuts are not being remastered for DVD - they have Dolby 2.0 sound instead of the Dolby 5.1 on the Special Editions.

Maybe its me but I won't buy them.
I may 'get' a copy but I won't buy them.
I'm done giving that bastard my money for the same movies.  I  have 4 copies of the movies, 3 just on VHS because of the different versions.
I can always watch them on VHS and wonder why I thought they were cool back in the day.  :)

Let me get this straight ...

You love the movies, you like the universe, yet you despise the creator as it will earn him more money. Is your money holy? He created an awesome product wich you desire yet you reluctantly wish to pay him for it.

He wants to fiddle a bit with the movies he created, to match his fantasy. Yet a lot of people disagree and want the pure originals. It is released, and then people complain he's just in it for the money, exploiting his ideals.

He never forced you to buy anything previously. They're additional products available to those who want em. Not satisfied ? Forget Star Wars and keep your hallowed cash.

But I digress. It's nice that they're available now, and I hope those interested will enjoy them.

I know that nobody is forcing me to buy this, and I understand that a director has a right to go back and edit his works to acheive what his vision of the piece is.

I only complain because up to know George Lucas always said that the edited versions were the definitive versions of the film and for that reason he would never realise the original edits. So I like many people bought the dvds of the edited versions when they came out thinking, "Well it's not the version I wasted many afternoons as a child watching but it's as close as I'm likely to get". Now just over a year later he IS realising the version I wanted all along, but only packaged with the edited version, so in order to get the thing I always wanted I have to buy something I already have.

God reading back over that I sound like such a whinging nerd, but I'm too lazy to edit it to make myself sound less-so

When Lucas said that the only versions that he would release on DVD would be the "edited" versions I said that I wouldn't be purchasing them b/c I wanted the original ones.  Now that they are coming out I will buy them because they have what I want.  The fact that they come with the edited ones is annoying but since I don't already own them I won't complain.

Though I wish he'd release the entire series (including the clone wars cartoons, and the unedited originals) as a nice boxed set.

he probably will one day, after many people have bought these.

no, he's dumb. the newer trilogy could have been so much better. esp 3. someone else should have done the dialogue. he's not dumb for making more money. that's quite brilliant, because only selling the edited movies was pissing people off. like me. i like my ewok song...

So this is basically Star Wars but with dreadful special effects?

How much am I paying for this?

Astaldo: If you prefer your cold, hard technology to things which actually exist, then don't buy it. Alegis rather cunningly outlined capitalism earlier; however, you don't have to participate.

Yes, my money is holy.  I love the universe, and like the movies.  I hate George Lucas for making into "OMGSTARZWARZRULEZ" with the first two shitty episodes.  I also would like to pummel him for redoing the movies in his 'vision' when he didn't need to do anything to them.  You may not agree but his 'redos' were mostly crap.

For the record I never wanted the originals on DVD.  Especially after having bought the redos so I can have them on DVD.  Why?  Because the VHS versions I have are in delicate shape.  If I want to see the originals I just ignore the redone scenes and use my memory.

This isn't quite true since my love of the universe made me buy them.  Regardless of my feeling toward Lucas now, when I was young he was awesome.  Before he crapped all over the universe with JarJar and company.

That said, I think anytime Star Wars is discussed you its almost like religion or politics.  Noone is going to change anyones elses mind about the evil that is Lucas! LOL

Oh but politics is an important theme of the series.

Actually, the theatrical version comes as a bonus. Each movie is 2 discs.

Quote
Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film.

Price tag unknown yet.

They said I was mad when I refused to buy the remastered trilogy when they were released on DVD! They called me a fool for not accepting anything but the original versions! Now who's laughing?

Bwahahaha!!

haha, I liked that post. ^

I also didn't buy it because I hoped he would come out with the original on DVD anyway, plus I didn't want to own the new crap, ewwww.

I'm glad he is coming out with it though. He could have been a loser and be all "THIS IS MY TRUE ARTISTIC VISION"

I too stayed free of the remastered DVDs.  I'm not sure I'll even pick up these ones though.  I think I may hold out until we get the complete six movie collection.  I don't care how lame the prequel trilogy may be.  I just want a big ass box!
Title: Damn now I have to give him more money!

I'd want a 9 box set.

As in original versions of 4, 5, 6. Re-mastered versions of 4, 5, 6 & eps 1, 2, 3.

I'd settle for it without 1, 2, & 3.

Post by: AceGun on 08 May 2006, 13:08
hey, maybe he'll remaster the prequels and actually improve them?  then a 12-movie set is in order!

At least he can't make 7, 8, and 9 like he used to talk about...

I disagree!

I think that once an artistic work has been released to the public it becomes - in a way - public property. This is especially true with all the ridiculous popularity that the Star Wars trilogy has.

I would argue that Lucas really had no right to add and delete bits from the original movies. Of course the law disagrees with me here, but…

edit: spelling.

I don't mind what they did with Indiana Jones, tweaking the sound and making the print a great deal cleaner, but yeah, adding scenes and updating special effects is essentially memory rape to me. It's like the difference between remastering an album, and going back to completely redo all the tracks you felt weren't upto par and then remixing it.

I mean, every artist wants to go back and fix mistakes he made, but once you put it out there and say "This is my work of art", I don't think you have the right to change it.

If what they did to Blade Runner is memory rape, then the bitches love it.  They wanted it, really.

that sickened me.

watching the originals is so much more satisfying ... part of the fun of it is noticing that when Luke and 'Ben' Canobe are in the sand cruiser (?) that there is a pink streak under it!
