Title: homemade mix CD artwork!
Post by: ImRonBurgundy? on 16 May 2006, 00:10
i spent two hours today with a scissors and glue (and my printer) making this CD insert for a mix CD i'm giving to my girlfriend:

and i printed out a label, too:

does anyone else get as much into this as i do?

I'm no way that creative. I do try to put some effort into it though. I stole my method from a friend. First I search magazines for a nice page with a large photo (I mainly use booze ads) which I then cut and fold into CD holding proportions. Then I wite the album name and tracklisting in my best sharpie handwriting on the ad. On the CD itself I write the Artist and Album in bothe English (or whatever) and in Japanese and maybe add some squiggly bits here and there.

that is awesome. my covers just usually end up being edog comics that fit the mood of the cd. i think the last one was "they don't know my rock and roll".

i just poorly scrawl the artist and album name on the cd in sharpie(or just "mix" or something). if its a girlie i might make a track list and include some sort of protective case/cover (usually a piece of printer paper folded around the cd and taped shut).

Yeah. I might include some decoration with the old cd marker (Write the artist name nice and whatnot) but as for the rest...jeez man, it's a cd. I wouldn't, indeed, don't even roll out all that crap for my girlfriend. It's just a circle of plastic with some music I think she'll like on it. It's going straight from her laptop to her ipod and then getting lost under a pile of clothes and pulp fantasy books in her room. The only cds I ever really tried to decorate much like that were the ones I used to make myself when I only had a CD player. There were twenty-two (I numbered the mix as most of them weren't themed, just my favourite tracks at the time.) and about the last six I found these little cardboard slip-cases, so I wrote out the track-lists on the backs and drew a vaguely appropriate picture on the front. That was really only because it gave me something to do in breaks at school, however. I think all these decorated cd cases are a hipster phenomenon. I feel kinda guilty about some of the ones I've got out of mix swaps here and elsewhere, because someones obviously put some considerable time and effort into them, which I probably only looked at to get the track names, and is now mouldering under a pile of year old Metal Hammer 'Razor' compilations.

Clever design though.

I dont know if it is your or Lydia's musical taste (or both of yours), but the songs on that mix are awesome.  The art is pretty much awesome too.  Everyone loves old school mario type graphics. Everyone. Ever.

Actually, I have 1000 Hours and Slappy on vinyl. I just need to find 39/Smooth.

Just wanted to say that the images used are from super mario bros for the nes, however, there is a port of it on the GBC which might be what you are thinking of.

I get into stuff like this way to soon, but I can't make CD labels. What kind of equipment does on use for that?

I make mix CD's for my friends all the time, as well as my own mix CD's, and personal best-of's for bands. Sometimes I make my own version of some band's album, using B-sides and whatnot to replace or add to the album.

I usually draw the covers as well.

I dunno about him, but I bought a kit at Office Depot that included CD shaped stickers and cardboard inserts, as well as a CD with the correct sizes for them in Word. It cost me $3 dollars too.

QFT, if I was doing the whole chick thing, and had met you, and you weren't stalking me, I'd fork over makeouts.

Indeed it has inspired me to get started on my mix CD.

Okay. So I am unable to get the CD labelling action going on.

HOWEVER

One time for a mix CD for a ladyfriend, I made liner notes which were one line from each song arranged in an interesting way on the page and sometimes there was a drawing with the words and I had to sew it together and use a template but the finished product was radical.

Another time I made a CD case for a friend and the first song was the Sealab 2021 theme and so I called it "under the sea" and the cover art I drew was a pencil sketch of a little guy on an island in the ocean and he's stranded and there's a palm tree and he's fishing but underneath the water the island is actually a jellyfish and it's holding the cracked-up remains of his plane.

This isn't quite as cool as it was last year, before it got all knocked around and the ink scratched, etc. But this would be a cd I did for my boyfriend.
