Title: Good SciFi Movies
Post by: greenMonkey on 22 May 2006, 17:46
I love science fiction and I love movies, so I was wondering if I could get some recommendations or tips on some good movies.  I love the original Star Wars Trilogy, Serenity and Firefly, and SciFi remake of Dune.

Blade Runner

and just for awesomeness factor, Tron.  I don't even know if that classifies as sci-fi or not.

We were talking about it a little while back in some other thread and a few people hated it, but Event Horizon was pretty cool I thought.

Dark City, Starship Troopers and Impostor is the only ones I can think of that hasn't been promoted beyond belief like Minority Report or The Matrix.
I like the new version of Planet of the Apes but damn people disagree with me. I suppose 2001: A Space Odyssey is required watching even if it is boring as hell in parts and has probably the weirdest ending short of Eraserhead I have seen.

And if you are up for a chuckle there is a Danish sci-fi called Webmaster in english(The Shadow in Danish).

yep, disagreeing. as a ridiculous fan of the original movie... all five of them... yes it is okay to laugh at me for this... i was in shock of the new one. seriously, where did that story even come from?

that being said, go watch the original planet of the apes.

Has anyone seen The Ultimate Warrior (http://imdb.com/title/tt0073835/)?  It sounds awesome.

Yes, now!

Even if you know how it ends and every single quote and plot point already, it's such a great movie that it's worth watching regardless.

Personally, I enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick. If you're looking for something that's partially Sci-Fi, Monty Python's Life of Brian has a good spaceship scene.

I've always loved Dark Star (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069945/). Where else would you get an atomic bomb debating the meaning of existance?

It's fucking great, and rather humorous, too.

Yuck. I'm among the haters.

Both the original and the Sci-Fi Channel versions of Dune are pretty good. The original has Patrick Stewart.

Star Trek 1-3 and 7-end.

Meh. The odd ones are the bad ones. (Seriously, the Search for Spock?! Ugh.) The even ones are the good ones. (Although I'll give you that whales from 1986 are the worst saviours of the world...)

I keep meaning to read Starship Troopers. It's on my list. I like the movie for the explosions.

Spaceballs is a must.

That guy?

I'm not intelligent enough to understand 2001. I own it, watched it a half-dozen times, and don't fucking get it (man).

Yeah, I saw 2001 a while ago and it was kind of boring.  Starship Troopers (the movie) is way different from the book.

I know it's not out yet but A Scanner Darkly looks like it will be a trip to watch.

edit:  Had to do a mental reboot.  A Clock Work Orange and THX 1138.  Are both great classic Sci Fi films.

I completely forgot about that one. I love it. Brad Pitt makes an awesome crazy guy.

I second The Fifth Element something fierce.

That is the single most fun sci-fi movie in all of existence. It's perfect. It may not be as intelligent as Blade Runner or 2001, but god it's soooo fun to watch.

I, completely unironically, love both Bill & Ted movies.  The high point of sci-fi cinema.

Dune (old & new)
Event Horizon
Johnny Mneumonic
Alien
Aliens
Blade Runner
Akira
The Thing

I realize these are mostly repeats of what others said but now the list is consolidated plus my own additions.

Negative, I am a meat popsicle.

I fragging love Robocop.  every last minute of it.  Contains the single best line of dialogue from the eighties, hands down.

"Bitches leave."

It's all in the delivery, really.

If you liked 12 Monkeys, you will like Jacob's Ladder.

The Fifth Element was fun just for Tricky. I think it was a bit pretentious of Luc Besson to cast his fiancee/wife at the time as "The Perfect Being," but I've seen worse.

And while I sing the praises of Bill & Ted, let us not forget the brilliance of Dude, Where's My Car?. Sci-Fi at its best.

Dune, Dune 2000, Children of Dune!

Equilibrium ( be it the mixture of Brave New World, Fahrenheit and another classic that it is, it's still a good one! the Gun Kata thing though was kinda... well, stupid! ) ( also a great Viking Metal band from Germany )

Batman Begins

V for Vendetta ( seen it a dozen times or so! )

Hmm... i can think of books, TV shows, comics, cartoons, computer games... but there aren't really that many Sci Fi movies that rocked!

Virus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120458/) with Jamie Lee Curtis was hella good.

OutBreak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114069/) as well. Not as much SciFi But still worth a watch. It was Morgan Freeman and Dustin Hoffman so you KNOW it's good.
