Merely reading about this gave me the good kind of shivers. Now I have the album in my grasp - this tangible item (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F3AAUW/sr=8-1/qid=1148257381/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5509416-7648715?%5Fencoding=UTF8) - that defies analogy. It's an incredible pastiche of neo-soul, hip-hop and mental illness, raw and furious but still wry and occasionally subdued. Cee-Lo Green and Dangermouse have teamed up to create this fantastic, textured work of majesty. I suggest you all buy it.
-
Judging by the single, 'raw' and 'furious' aren't really the words I use.
I mean, Diamanda Galas it ain't.
-
i wouldnt call it raw or furious either. but i would call it good music.
-
I like it okay. Maybe it'll grow on me with time.
Lately all I can listen to are Jesu and Ladytron. wtf.
-

If you're looking for something analogous, the Peeping Tom album comes out next week.
-
I haven't heard a ton of Gnarls Barkley's stuff, but if the song 'Crazy' is anything to go by, I think I'm in love.

The album overall is quite a bit more schizophrenic than the single.
-
Crazy is in the 'song of the year' running. The album as a whole is also quite good.
-
I saw 'em on Later with Jools holland on the BBc last week and they fucking kicked ass. Did a soul version of Crazy that broke my heart.
-
I want to get St. Elsewhere.
-
I am seriously digging St Elsewhere. Crazy is pretty much the best song, but the album is really good nonetheless.
Danger Mouse can do no wrong it seems.
-
Super. Another awesome album I really want to buy. I HAVE NO MONEY TO BUY ALL THIS MUSIC.
Do we think the government would be chill with me spending welfare checks on Alt. Hip-hop records???

Yeah, was just thinking that something like Lovage fits Johnny's description much more closely, to my mind.
I'm happy something like 'Crazy' was both all over the charts and getting critical props, instead of backwards looking poo, but don't particularly like it. I used to listen to Cee-Lo Green's old crew, Goodie Mob.. they're OK too, not something I miss hearing, though. As for Dangermouse... he just seems pretty irrelevant to me. Relatively speaking, he's not a great hip-hop producer and he's not an inventive outsider type either. cf. Cee-Lo's last solo album, produced by big hitters like Timbaland.
-
I like Gnarls Barkley. The single Crazy caught my brain and held it hostage for a while but now I've listened to the whole album, it's not my favourite song. It's all so... well, I would say raw, actually. And open. I like 'Just A Thought' at the moment. It's harsh and introspective. Wonderful.
-
I like St. Elsewhere, but I think perhaps the hysteria is a bit overblown. In my ears it is not a masterpiece, but a fun collection of songs that go from really good, (Smiley Faces, Crazy, Go Go Gadget Gospel) to mediocre(Gone Daddy Gone, The Boogie Monster, Who Cares).
Basically it is good but not that good, I am a bit tired of it to be honest.
-

"Crazy," though brilliant, is not the most raw or harsh song on the album. "Schizophrenic" is the word someone used above and that is apropos.
I actually like the "Gone Daddy Gone" cover. This view is apparently unpopular and I will not repeat it.
Nuisance: I like Timbaland as much as the next hip-hop loving indie dick but I still think Danger Mouse is a great producer.
-
My main problem with Gone Daddy Gone is the "hollow" chorus, it lacks punch in my opinion.
-

Yes. Agreed. Excellent.
I like Timbaland as much as the next hip-hop loving indie dick but I still think Danger Mouse is a great producer.
Also agreed. Danger Doom was fucking great!
-
Danger Doom was good, but Gnarls Barkley blows my mind. Cee Lo really makes it worthwhile.
-
And Danger Mouse's production is a much larger part of Gnarls Barkley than it was for Danger Doom, too. He really stepped up his game for this release.
-
I like the fact this band gets played on our local alternative station, as they are pretty great.
Anybody remember that crazy Cee-Lo MV from about 5 years ago?
Me neither.
-
Alright, I’m finally convinced, I’m checking out Gnarls Barkley.

Oh it's worth it. Occasionally the mainstream will accidentally pluck at a great artist.

I wouldn't assume that their commercial acceptance is much of an accident.

Are you suggesting some sort of evil conspiracy is involved? Twelve jew bankers and all?
-
I think credit does need to go to Zane Lowe for getting this popular.
I liked Dangermouse's Grey Album (The one that mixed JayZ's Black album over the Beatles White, if you haven't heard it check it out, it is fantastic) But I haven't heard anything else from Gnarls yet.
Also, the Kooks did a live acoustic version of Crazy which was amazing, I want to find it to download.

No, just that the music industry is a sometimes-well-oiled machine that is down for making the dollars. They can often see where the money's at. They don't make people listen to shitty music; they sell what people will buy.

Was listening to "Crazy" pretty heavily when it came out, but you get sick of it when the radio plays it every day. There is another couple of songs on the album I like, but it's hardly a massive album to my ears, sorry
-
I actually like the "Gone Daddy Gone" cover. This view is apparently unpopular and I will not repeat it.
Huh? Is this a Violent Femme's cover or am I just inebriated and misunderstanding?

It is.

Don't apologize for your taste! I said "DISCUSS" not "AGREE."
EDIT: I said neither. But I would have said "DISCUSS" had I said one of the two.
-
Ghetto Pop Life is the best thing Dangermouse has done.
-
Ok. i'm bumping this thread cause i finally checked these guys out. Not having MTV and not getting radio reception caused me to just hear the hype surrounding them and never actually getting to hear their music. I was expecting another bad mainstream rap artist, and i was totally pleasantly surprised, i'm definitely buying the cd asap!
-
everything is the best thing Dangermouse has done.
But that doesn't mean I'm not acttively lookin for a copy of Ghetto Pop Life.
-
"Crazy" is hardly the song of the year and the album is no more than a B- in my book. It's merely a little better than decent; the problem with it is that there are some very good songs, but there are way too many mediocre/bad songs. As for my picks for the real song of the year? "Promiscuous", "Kick, Push", or "Benton Harbor Blues".
-
Dangermouse - Space Hos
That's the one you'll be wanting.
-
I honestly think I'm the only person in the world right now that really can't stand gnarls barkley
-
As for my picks for the real song of the year? "Promiscuous".(other stuff here)
that song by nelly furtado?! ughhh definitely nottttttttttt
-
I've avoided getting the album, since it's on the TV all the time and everybody's going on about how good it is, I figured they were probably just catchy chorus' that soon wear out. I don't know much about Dangermouse so that was no draw for me. Is it actually worth getting/paying attention to for sombody who listens to Decemberists, NMH, ABSFB and Band of Horses pretty exclusivley?
Also, song of the year should totally be The Funeral. Or Mariners Revenge Song, which is so good it transcends our mortal concept of 'years',
-
did anyone see them perform "crazy" on the mtv movie awards? i know its not cool or whatever but i turned it on right before they started playing and it was pretty sweet. everyone on stage (orchestra, back up singers etc) were all dressed up like star wars characters. like, the singers were jedi star fighters and the orchestra were imperial troops or whatever. anyway it was cool.
and the drummer was in a full chubaca costume. yeah
-
GNARLS BARKLEY MOER <LIKE GNARLS SHARKLEY AMIRITE
WAIOt
-
I honestly think I'm the only person in the world right now that really can't stand gnarls barkley
Nope.
-
Ohhh guyz now that they are popularr I don't liek them anymorez srsly
-
I'm really missing the awesomeness here. I'll check out a few more songs.
-
Good: Go-Go Gadget Gospel, Crazy, Smiley Faces, Feng Shui, Just a Thought, Transformer, Necromancer
Okay: St. Elsewhere, Gone Daddy Gone, Storm Coming
Lame: The Boogie Monster, Who Cares?, Online, The Last Time
-
It's not really my style except for Crazy.
-
Ohhh guyz now that they are popularr I don't liek them anymorez srsly
Yeah lyk OMG nvm teh fact that I mite just not liek them 2 begin wiff and nt care if their popular.
I love the decemberists, green day, postal service, and many more bands that are very popular.
PARADOX
-
Yummy.

You know, it's possible* that that wasn't directed at you.
*extremely probable

It was beneath me, and it had better not have been about me. Because I resent that. If it was about me. Yeah.
-
Just bought St. Elsewhere.
I like it so far.
-
I honestly think I'm the only person in the world right now that really can't stand gnarls barkley
Nope. "Crazy" drives me nuts.
And I too love "Promiscuous". For the first time I'm considering buying a Nelly Furtado album.
-
It was beneath me, and it had better not have been about me. Because I resent that. If it was about me. Yeah.
Well, my post was not directed at anyone, but in retrospect I think I'll direct it at you, just for kicks.
In other news: 'Just a Thought' is a pretty amazing song. I love the huge stop-start cymbal crashes.
-
It's not just good, it's great! (depression)
-
As for my picks for the real song of the year? "Promiscuous".(other stuff here)
that song by nelly furtado?! ughhh definitely nottttttttttt
more like definitely.
-
Grrrl, I'm a freak, you shouldn't say-those-thiiings!
-
I actually fucking love this album. From hearing "Crazy" I was afraid that they might be another one-hit-wonder type project who released one zany song and a CD of filler, but the whole thing is wonderful. Eclectic, upbeat and just really fun.
