I'm currently working on a folk noir/post-industrial musical project, but am basically being constantly frustrated by my inability to sing very well. Even if I take lessons and quit smoking, I very much doubt that my voice will be up to what I want for a lot of my tracks.
To this end, I have worked up a short demo. Yes, I know it's crap, but it gives an idea of what I'm doing:
Ill Met By Moonlight - Something Withered This Way Comes (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=2E38C1A31E36194B)
Of these tracks, The Loving Hand of Time is the only one I'm really happy with. Northern Ocean needs better guitar tone, and the others need better vocals.
To that end, does anyone want to be the main vocalist of my project? or maybe just do a couple of songs? Provisos:
1: I write all the lyrics, or choose which songs will be interpreted/covered.
2: I write the music.
3: You've got to be cool with singing religiously pagan stuff, or possibly covering anti-christian bands such as Sol Invictus.
So, basically, I get most of the creative input. The kickback from this is that, if I ever manage to sell anything by the project, you get a cut.
As a secondary thing, if anyone wants to guest or anything...?
And yeah, I KNOW it's crap. And I know it sucks asking on the internet. Believe me, I would love to put this group together as a live concern and get a more earthy feel to it with percussion and whatnot (though I am thinking of redoing Twa Corbies with bodhran), but everyone I know sucks.

Godamnit, why are'nt there any guys like you here?
I'd love to help out, but there's a continent between us. Anything I can do over the interbutt?
-
If you've got a microphone, yes...
It's all a mish-mash of stuff. I have a decent microphone (Pro Sound YU37 Cardiod) and amp (Marshall MG), and the only track that's really finished is, as I said, 'The Loving Hand of Time'. It's a shitty demo. Problems affecting the other tracks:
1: As far as I remember, the guitar track on Northern Ocean was recorded when I was having awful bad ground problems, so I basically just had to turn up overdrive until it drowned it out.
2: I've made about eight different attempts to record Twa Corbies, none of them satisfactory. In order to round out the demo, I took the best guitar track I could find and tried to fudge some vocals and recorder over that. That's the track that most needs decent vocal attention though.
3: I actually had a really nice version of Sir Patrick Spense that sat well next to Loving Hand, however Audacity crashed because I was basically using too many layers, the bastard thing. That version I recorded this morning. My guitar is probably slightly out of tune, and I did the vocals all in two takes straight through.
For recording really decent versions, I probably need to hook up my dads Ovation's contact mike into my multi-effects and comp and then record it that way.
What I really want to do is get a still rough, but decent sounding demo of about six tracks worked up (all up to Loving Hand, or better), then either get signed to a small post-industrial label or hawk it as an EP, and use the resulting cash to buy proper studio time. Please remember, though, that I'm not going for a crystal, pristine sound in these songs anyway. I want it kinda dirty. But ideally, I want some beauty in there as well, which is what I'm currently really lacking.

I don't know if I can sing. I can certainly make noises, so I'll send you my noises and you can see if you like them.
Also, there's only a few miles between us, so we could possibly record something live if you want to.
-
I want either soft female/choirboy, or raw folky vocals, but, well, less raw than mine.
Or at least less flat.
I suppose a widely known example would be Bob Dylan, but I more mean this sort of thing:
Sol Invictus - Sheath and Knife (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=5BC638894524E5CF)
The whole point of making and posting the demo was to show what sort of feel I wanted, as well as show that I actually had some stuff worked up.
@ Ode: Noises would be good, but I would prefer singing...if anyones really interested, what I was thinking was I could send you the guitar track from and the words to Twa Corbies for you to try out with. As for live...well, that would be cool, but kinda pointless without studio time. I can barely fit my own instruments in my bedroom.

By noises I meant singing :P
Not sure about folky, sure about soft female/choirboy and that's a no.
-
I'd totally do it but I don't have a microphone. Bleh.
-
I think I can do that. It'll probably go horribly wrong. I'll get back to you in a couple of days about it, unless you want to talk to me on msn about it.
-
I might be able to record at a friends house, if your looking for a bass part or possibly guitar for a few tracks.
-
Khar I would enjoy helping you sing. I don't see any problem with your pagan witchery, really, and frankly as long as the lyrics aren't like "YOUR GOD IS DEAD ALL HAIL BMARUH'NOTH, TREE SPIRIT" or some shit that would be fine. My mic is definitely just a computer mic but it's good for the soft choirboy singing which is what I do best with it. It'll sound a little rough and earthy but I gather that is what you're looking for (check out "Violet" on my Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/theseestates) for the best example I have).
EDIT: And I'm fine for singing the Sol Invictus stuff as long as there ain't any "Jesus was a fraud and you're all fools" goin' down. That I don't hold much truck with.

Well, the thing is, the song I really need the most choirboy singing for is 'Elysium', which is, you might say, my response to/parody of the great English patriotic hymn Jerusalem. I wrote it when I found out that the phrase 'dark satanic mills' actually referred to the stones of stone circles.
"And did those hooves in ancient time
Sound upon England’s mountains green?
And was the horned crown of Herne
On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
And the did the matriarch divine
Smile forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Elysium builded here
Encased by great Dianic mills?
Bring me my wand of carved birch!
Bring me my robes of blackest wool
Bring me my knife, O Moon Arise!
Bring me my silver chalice full…
I shall not cease, from spiritual strife
Nor my soul rest nor placid stand
Till we have built Elysium
In England’s green and pleasant land."
I'll listen to Violet.
@Mis: For what I want, I think I'm pretty much fine doing my own guitar, however, if you could write some bass parts to my guitar for a bit of Devils Steed style SI electric undercurrent that would be awesome.
If I tab out a few songs and tell you the time signature and bpm?
EDIT: Okay, this sounds kinda wierd, but, you're American accent is pretty strong, so, if you did do some stuff, could you go either for sounding like Backworld or a total Neutral Milk Hotel-out.
-
Khar, I would love to give this a try. I don't sing all that well, but I do vocals for my band, and the vocals will atleast sound quite different from yours. I sound kind of young (I'm seventeen) and have an Icelandic accent. But I don't think I can do the choirboy thing, I've never taken lessons or anything. If this souns like something you want to try, by all means send me the guitar track and lyrics, if I record anything that isn't terrible I'll send it back to you.
-
Okay mate. I'll get on to it tomorrow. PM me with your email.
-
Khar, when I read your vocals I totally get this voice in my head like Spinal Tap's "The Majesty of Rock". Oh man, I should totally record what I'm thinking of. I might do it when I get home from work if I don't forget all about it. I hope not, because it'd be so much goddamned fun.

I actually don't listen to either of those bands. Not even NMH. But if you're asking me to fake a British accent, that could happen.
I could also give the rougher folk stuff a try if you want. No big promises, but I can get a decently raw voice when necessary.
-
Khar, if you have Guitar Pro you could just tab it out there, send me the file and I'll bulid it a nice bass line and send the file back.
-
I will do all this guys, just want to note that it may take me a bit of time as my monitors gone to that great plasma screen in the sky, and thus I may not have access to my computer for a tad.
Gods bless libraries, eh?
-
Monitors are pretty easy to replace here. You can find like, 3 a week in various trash bins and whatnot. Shit, I have like 6.
