Lying awake last night, I was treated to the amazing sleeping tones that were my flatmates cracking up to the life aquatic. It got me thinking... I should really get a stereo (i can't sleep with earphones, it sucks...) and some music to play to go to sleep to.
So, being the incredibly divergent, diverse bunch that we are... has anybody thought about this before? Can we sing out some bands?
I'm thinking quite melodic but breathy music. IE, I think the thing that would make it good sleeping music would be if the music is relatively uninteresting and smooth flowing. If I go to sleep to Sigur Ros, or to the French Kicks, then I'll be moved along as the album moves - and I'll be tempted to listen, which keeps me up later! This is not the objective.
Soothing sounds that prompt sleep are the objective. Maybe like an instrumental sigur, or something... Go!
-
sputnik and the angel
-
Mazzy Star, Jose Gonzalez, The American Analog Set
these are probably the most relaxing people that I listen to
-
lali puna -- i thought i was over this
put disk two on shuffle and it's so subdued quite and spacey you'll be out like a light in no time. flat.
-
I've been going to bed with Architecture in Helsinki's Fingers Crossed the past couple nights.
-
Christian Death.
-
I will drop a badass list of songs to sleep to on this thread tomorrow.
-
In all seriousness, I actually have slept to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. turn it to a low enough volume and it because the exact sort of noise I need to sleep.
-
Christian Death.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3
-
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper
British Sea Power - Fear of Drowning
All of 'Rose Clouds of Holocaust' by Death in June.
Pretty much every Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance track in existence.
Gae Bolg - Death of the West
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
Halo of Flies - Stormclouds and Skrealings (No, seriously, it's like my favourite sleeping track)
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Echoes, Astronomy Domine, etc.
All of Scientist's album 'Scientist Battles the Evil Curse of the Vampires', and much dub in general.
Sisters of Mercy - Bury Me Deep, Comfortably Numb
Any Tan-Hauser Gate
Wolfsheim - The Sparrows and the Nightingales
Those are some of my choices.
-
Mogwai. Sigur Ros. most stuff like that. aaand some classical. works like charm.
-
Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service lull me to sleep pretty quickly.
Angels & Airwaves, too, but mentioning A&A here might have DIRE CONSEQUENCES. Oops.
-
Well, I'd suggest more melodic tunes to help you drift off, although heavy music can help you tune out roomates.
Pretty much anything by:
Led Zepplin
Death Cab for Cutie
Beetles
Kansas
Power Ballads
-
Tortoise, Cat Power, Four Tet, Mogwai, American Analog Set, My Bloody Valentine, Jack Johnson, The Books, Death Cab, The Album Leaf.
Oddly, sometimes I need something fast, with a lot of lyrics however. Those nights are strange.
-
I'd agree with the above recos for Mogwai and Tortoise and Sigur Ros...plus the Sea and Cake, Telefon Tel Aviv, Portishead
-
Sigur Ros, usually Agaetis Byrjun or Takk....
Sometimes I'll throw in London Calling to mix things up, or The Outernational Sound.
I once fell asleep to The Very Best Of Motorhead..fucked up dreams, man.
-
The only album I can possibly fall asleep too is (). I used to fall asleep to music all the time, but then I borrowed () from my roommate once and used only that to fall asleep too for like 2 months straight, and now it's the only thing that works.
-
Agree with Tortoise, My Bloody Valentine and The Books, Mogwai would be tricky; Rock Action, Come On Die Young and Happy Songs for Happy People would work, but trying to sleep through My Father My King or Young Team would be hard.
My additions: Boards of Canada, Godspeed You! Black Emperor(at low volume), Air, Bright Eyes, some Ry Cooder and Scheider TM.
Aside from that, I am easily lulled to sleep with Ocean Rain by Echo and the Bunnymen for some reason.
-
i usually sleep to iron and wine. yes, that's how my lastfm count for iron and wine got so ridiculously high.
sometimes i switch it up for mogwai, sigur ros, or kings of convenience.
-
two perfect sleep albums:
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
and
Sonic Nurse - Sonic Youth
-
Fennesz's "Venice" album. It's brilliant just to lie down while it's on and let the sound wash over you.
(that said though, I don't like falling asleep to it myself because I can't really fall asleep while music's on.)
-
I spent an inordinately high amount of time falling sleep to Cynic in high school. Despite the death metal influence, there's this very strong ethereal feeling to the proceedings. Also, the amount of complexity in the music was really interesting, because I would try to stay focused, but I would be really tired, so as I would initially slip into unconsciousness, there would be a period of half lucidity/half dreaming which would lead to interesting sensory perception of various musical qualities. Other than that, I would probably choose minimalism and ambient stuff.

You kids and your drugs.
-
Recently I've been using Loscil's First Narrows, Keith Fullerton Whitmans Playthroughs and this grating, abrasive Sakada 3" to help me drift off.
-
I often fall asleep listening to bands like Opeth and Finntroll so I cannot help you.
-
Fintroll would probably give me the best dreams ever.
-
Merzbow
-
I've been meaning to try that but I keep buying other stuff when I see a Merzbow album.
-
I was joking, there's no way you could sleep through a Merzbow album.
Man, I wish I could find Merzbow albums, threy're kinda hard to get.
Anyway, I selp through Kyuss' Welcome To Sky Vally album once, it was pretty sweet.
-
Dead Girl by Acid Bath springs to mind.
-
yay for low and slint! the only downside to spiderland is that it usually takes me ages to get to sleep and it only clocks in at just over 30 minutes. plus all that "i miss you" yelling at the end. egads. scared the carp out of my semi-consciousness.
i'm tossing in "ninetynine" by Haujobb, "III" by Download, and if you're into that whole Portishead or Massive Attack(both good choices too)thing, "Metropolitan" by Atomica is a great sleepy time cd.
-
( ) by Sigur Rós works perfectly until it gets to the second half and I have to remain awake for fear that the subject of my dreams will alter from pretty Icelandic unicorns to mean trolls that want to feed me cabbage laced with vinegar. That or either of Max Richter's albums.
-
Definately Sigur Ros, but not Takk, its too pompy and dramatic for sleep.
also, iron & wine (endless numbered days) is good.
-
The last few times I've slept to music it's been an incarnation of Acid Mothers Temple. I'm not sure what that means, but I enjoyed it.
-
Nirvana - Unplugged Album, so great to sleep to.
-
The Postal Service is a good one. I'd also say The Moon & Antarctica and Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks by Modest Mouse. Both albums have sort of a mellow, spacey feel to them that I think is good for sleeping to. Although a couple tracks on M&A (like "Paper Thin walls" or "What People Are Made of") might kind of ruin that mood. I haven't tried this, but I'd guess that the Halo Benders are good to sleep to.
-
Explosions in the Sky
A Silver Mt. Zion
-
Dueds why are you fucking ingoring my suggestings
They are pretty fucking somnolent guys
-
Elliott Smith has a kind of lullaby effect on me.
Greg Davis for some spacey/slightly drunk bed-listening.
Kings of Convenience never get too loud, quite good post-party comedown.
-
Brandtson's older stuff like Fallen Star Collection is pretty calming.
Also North Atlantic Explorers is nice for sleep. So is Azure Ray November EP. I highly reccommend it.
-
everyone's said Mogwai, and there are a few songs on Takk... that work really really well. Like Heysatan, I can understand what you mean though, Milano is somewhat emotional, and it would not be good to sleep to.
Jezebel on Woman King would be good to sleep to, Freedom Hangs Like Heaven or Grey Stables would keep me up.
I use Native American flute all the time. That not only gets you to sleep really fast, but the ethereal qualities you witness as you drift to slumber make for some awesome dreams.
-
Listening to the new Coldplay album made me fall asleep while DRIVING it was so boring.
-
I sometimes sleep to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs...because I like to pretend that I'm Karen O...
-
Turn On The Bright Lights works. Antics not so much.
-

I'm usually pretty much asleep by the end of Hoppipolla.
-
Juana Molina!
She is also very good for hangovers.
-
Turn On The Bright Lights works. Antics not so much.
This is true. Turn On The Bright Lights is much more of a laid back, flowing piece, whereas Antics is more individual songs and is a bit louder.
-
Nick Drake, Iron & Wine, Air, Grant-Lee Phillips, Bob Dylan

Well, some Bob Dylan. There's so much variation - and hard rock - in Dylan's catalogue that you can't really say 'Bob Dylan is good to sleep to!'
-
the album leaf
daft punk's slower songs, like 'make love' or 'something about us'
andain - the singer has a pretty pretty voice.
-
British Sea Power - Fear of Drowning
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Echoes, Astronomy Domine, etc.
As these are the only songs I've heard, I agree with them, Khar. Also I could see myself falling asleep to "North Hanging Rock," I think it's called.
Kid A can be slept to, and so can the last two Wilco studio records. Seriously, try sleeping to A Ghost Is Born and you'll probably be out at the end of "Muzzle Of Bees."

YHF yes, but Ghost Is Born is too loud to sleep to for me. At Least That's What You Said and Muzzle Of Bees have massive, rocky crescendoes that don't work for when I'm sleeping.
However, I agree on Kid A.
-
i'd have to say 'the american dollar'
or 'black dahlia murder' can metal me to sleep any day
-
Bohren und der Club of Gore; my favorite CD for sleeping or any activity at nighttime is "Black Earth". Sunset Mission is good, but not quite as relaxing.
-
Orbital - Halcyon (and on and on)
Great song. Very warm, ethereal feeling.
-
Aphex Twin - SAW2. Interesting dreams, that one generates. Make sure you have an eye on the playlist - one time I awoke to the maniacal laughter in the opening track for Ventolin EP. That gave me the fear(tm) but good.
-

Good one. I love that song.
-
Enya is very soothing. No particular song, just her voice.
-
So is some Loreena McKennit. (I think I completely mispelled that)
EElS - Blinking Lights And Other Revelations is also nice for sleeping, although can cause some depressing dreaming.
A little off-topic, CagedinSanity, I love your avatar.
-
While I'm thinking about it, I'll add:
The Shins - Those to Come
-
Sigur Ros as many have mentioned...
South
certain Explosions in the Sky songs
Grandaddy
Kinski
Jeff Buckley
-
El Ten Eleven
The Six Parts Seven
-
Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Dean Evenson and Sounds of Nature all work wonders for me. The songs "Solaris" and "Landing" by Juno Reactor are also really good for inducing sleep.
-
I actually have trouble sleeping to music, I don't really know why no matter how "sleepy" the music is I just can't seem to fall asleep. The only music I can really fall asleep to is music that I am VERY familiar with, it can't be anything at all new. Oh also hip-hop works well for me... I really don't know why but I fell asleep to the new kanye west album a lot when it came out.
Man that album rules.
-
i can't listen to music and sleep. my brain wants to concentrate on it and analyze it versus putting me to sleep. i think music theory ruined me.
however, what i can listen to is some classical and purely instramental stuff. like soundtracks and what not. if you like choral music, look up eric whitacre. that man is a fucking genius and the music is a-may-ZING. it's so beautiful.

spectrum - quicksilver glide divine
fm3 - the buddha box
