Well you could suggest Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella. But I think it might get you banned. Bondage and that, great cover though.

Sibylle Baier - Colour Green (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drh100/h159/h15928r9k0d.jpg)

quintessential grainy old time picture. Wonderful.

Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drh000/h060/h06006x0nxs.jpg)

It is just so fragile, fits perfectly.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Hause der Lüge (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc600/c607/c6071563677.jpg)

It is not my favourite Neubauten album but the cover art is just so out there and hilarious.

Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd900/d913/d91301czaqp.jpg)

I am not all that crazy about the music but the cover art is excellent.

Borbetomagus - Buncha Hair that Long (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre900/e971/e97187bg9ta.jpg)

I haven't hear their music but I will, I will start with this one.

Sonic Youth - Murray Street (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f347/f34732t4lmw.jpg)

Thurston and co. got plenty of good ones but this is just fantastic.

Low - Trust (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf400/f476/f47678o6mny.jpg)

Low at their most depressing and also their best cover

And also the Candy referred to in the second verse of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side:

Candy came from out on the island
In the back room she was everybody's darling
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side."

A favourite album cover has always been Palace Music's Viva Last Blues (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd400/d468/d468113ge8u.jpg).  However off the top of my head the best album cover ever is for Undercurrent (http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f379/f37993gux2w.jpg) by Bill Evans and Jim Hall.  (Unfortunately I'm in a rush and can only find tiny pictures of each.)

I think you meant to say you like album covers designed by The Designer's Republic.

Did you realise all those covers were designed by the same people?  Actually, maybe the Squarepusher one isn't.

The cover of 'Amber' is really fucking beautiful... I was sitting on the IDM mailing list at the time it came out and someone said the photo is off some mountains near their house, in Utah!?  And 'Tri Repetae' is great "in the flesh", the way it's different bits of card, rather than a booklet, so it can be rearranged to make different covers.  Oh wait, I think you chose 'Anvil Vapre'.  Oh well.

Actually, another, very different cover that does a similar rearrangeable thing to 'Tri Repetae' is Pulp's 'Different Class'.  That's bloody tasty.

And sorry to Kai, but I really fucking hate King Crimson's album covers.  If not for Genesis they'd be up for some big time YOU'RE SHIT award for most consistently bad album covers.  Maybe 'Starless and Bible Black' was OK?  Their 90s comeback rubbish was bloody ugly.

As well as the Touch stuff I mentioned above, I really like Old Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers (http://www.therapcella.com/images/releases/265.jpg) and also Zammuto's 'Willscher' (http://www.hauntedink.com/25/502.jpg).

KharBevNor - anything that looks vaguely prog or metal gets a pretty much automatic thumbs down from me.  I thought all those covers you linked to looked rubbish.  Just not to my taste at all, although I quite like the squiggly pen styles of the Limp Bizkit cover, despite the shit content...

Anything with Gothic looking lettering, whether it's Snoop or Twilight, also gets the thumbs down.

Why?

Mostly it just comes down to associations of images with what I consider to be bad music.

If you're meaning about Gothic fonts, I've always found them ugly, even when I was in primary school and I was reading the Germans' speech in Asterix comics, I remember not liking the look! :)  On album art I guess they connote attempts at looking evil, menacing or somehow arch, none of which resonates with me in the slightest, nor tickles my brain either.

From what I've read I think we're almost diametrically opposed, taste-wise.  :)

With those King Crimson albums though...what's 'proggy' about them? They could be for any band. Not to mention that loads of albums that aren't metal or prog bear similiar things.

I'm going to un-nominate the Porcupine Tree cover, because Deadwing pales in comparison to its predecessor both musically and visually. I remember the first time I looked through the album art of Deadwing, I was pretty disgusted. Normally, when it comes to album art, I either like it or I don't care, but I felt a strong distaste for that album.

Now for one I do like, Popul Vuh's Einsjager & Siebenjager: (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001ZWKBQ.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg)

Yeah, fair call, my knowledge of whose music they're representing probably colours my opinions.  I can explain what I don't like about each one, but not sure what the point is?

Semi-coincidentally had some friend recommend I check out the art of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))))))))))), Southern Lord records) and was surprised that it's packed full of wireframe type geometric shapes, sans-serif fonts, super-saturated photos.. all the hallmarks of 90s electronica..  There was some Earth gatefold LP with beautiful close-ups of flower beds!

I don't think covers necessarily have to represent a certain style at all.

That said, I absolutely adore a proper, overall use of the black metal aesthetic. Particularly the old unreadable logo and grim photo combo.

Not to be an ass when such a newbie...but I really didn't see the point of links.  yeah, it's killer for dial up (does anyone have that anymore?) but it pretty much tripled the amount of time it took to get through the thread, just to realize most people were only posting metal covers.

Autechre - Ep5 (http://i6.tinypic.com/13z992t.jpg)

I couldn't get a decent angle on it, but it's just black matt plastic with "autechre" engraved on the front and "ae" on engraved on the back. I thought it was pretty neat.

and i'd like to add oceansize.

Agree'd, the effloresce artwork is fab.

You know, I am reflecting here that one of the central arguments of vinyl lovers is entirely correct. I mean, look at this:

Doesn't seem like much, but I've got a version on a red vinyl 7" and it looks great. Which also brings me to the totality of the package as well. Someone needs to invent the CD equivalent of vinyl engravings.

^^^ I don't know what is going on with my Autechre cd, but the boxed looks seriously warped and out of proportion. It doesn't look straight. Gosh darn my camera skillz.

What can I say...Autechre has *really* good album covers.

Also, Disconnected (http://geometrikrecords.com/bol125/covers/funkstorung.jpg) by Funkstorung has fantastic production...a heavy-gauge embossed plastic sleeve over an embossed jewel case, with day-glo print all over.  Pictures cannot do it justice.

Despite the fact a lot of them are pretty badly drawn, there is something awesome about Scientist covers.

Especially this one:

Hmmm...Have to include Mr. McKean. a pile of which can be seen here:

http://www.dreamline.nu/cdcovers/

And what the heck, I'll add this. Why?  Cause I did it (art) with the lead singer (typography and fudgings) and it's the closest I'll ever get to a "metal" sort of image.  There are so many things wrong with it, but it's out and the first major I did.  Call me biased.

I love the Millenium Falcon impaled on the spike and the Enterprise crashing towards earth.
