Fuck yes!
I just got back from Bright Eyes in Saskatoon (three hour commute each way) and it was a very damn good show! Gruff Rhys, guys, is officially pure awesome. He messed up during the first song and the audience was all "YEAH IT'S OKAY YOU STILL ROCK" and he finished it and it was devastatingly beautiful like most of his set was. Also, I won't ruin it, but when he offers to play the song with the birds in it you should accept heartily.
Bright Eyes themselves were pretty good. They played "Train Under Water," "Poison Oak" and a rather spare version of "Lover I Don't Have To Love." Also, Oberst definitely played "First Day Of My Life" solo. I was sad there was no "Bowl Of Oranges" or especially no "Road To Joy" but he's got such a massive catalogue that I guess you can't have it all. It was still pretty radical though.
The venue kinda sucked ass; it was basically part of the city's exhibition grounds and thus was a big concrete room with enormous curtains separating us from backstage and a big beer garden that I hated because it meant that we were in that shitty venue so some promoter could set up a beer garden and make some additional scratch, gahhhhhhhh. And there was no merch. So going into it, there were two strikes, but they managed to hit a decent triple, if not an inside-the-park homerun.
Oh, and most of the audience members were girls, but they weren't complete idiots. The guy in front of me was kind of a different story; after all, Bright Eyes post-Morning is not an appropriate band to throw up the horns for.
I am very excited for Wilco now. Mostly because while Oberst didn't seem to really encourage a lot of audience participation, Wilco's live record indicates they'll be all up on that.
What about you guys? Hit up any of your summer concerts yet? Excited to attend some of them?
-
No summer concerts yet, I missed out on the Bright Eyes show here, but I don't mind that all too much. I don't dislike him, but I'm a fan.
I plan on going to see Neko Case in early July, and as of now, due to age limits at most of the better venues, that's all I'm going to go to at the moment. I'm out of town for pretty much all of July, and the begining of August, so I'm missing the Vancouver Folk Festival, as well as Broken Social Scene and Sam Roberts with the Stills, which I'm really not happy about.
However, I do plan on going to the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle in the begining of September, the line up is fairly amazing, so I couldn't resist.
And damn you on being able to go see Wilco, Johnny. They somehow decided to hit basically every major Canadian city except Vancouver. I'm stilly slightly pissed about that.
-
Well, I actually have to drive out five hours to Winnipeg to see Wilco, so hell of inconvenience right there. Although I'm surprised they aren't playing as lucrative a locale as Vancouver.
-
I'm debating about buying tickets for the Flaming Lips/Sonic Youth, but I'm having trouble convincing myself to cough up $35 for it. Which is particularly lame since I had no problem shelling over for Ani Difranco coming up later this month.
-
What's the difference between summer concerts and not summer concerts?
-
You can leave the show, and stumble around the streets drunk all night and not worry about getting cold. That's the benefit of summer concerts.
I went to the bright eyes show here. It sounds like it was exactly the same as your show.
-
Plus summer concerts can and often are outside. And festivals.
-
I'm BEYOND psyched for the Pitchfork Music festival. Not only do I get to see Os Mutantes, but I also get to get plastered with new people.
-
What's the difference between summer concerts and not summer concerts?
There isn't much of one, except that you can maybe make very large commutes to go see some of them and also taking trips to see said concerts won't affect your life too much. Unlike, say, during the school year.
-

Now I get to be all JEALOUS
-
Dylan in a couple of weeks. Can't wait.
-
I'm going to see Pelican, Liars, both in Toronto-also looking to go see Sonic Youth in august with The Go! Team. I saw Bright Eyes earlier in the year with Feist opening-considered going again for Gruff alone......
-

It's worth $35 EACH to see those bands. Go you fool.
Well...not the lips. But sonic youth? Yuh.
Well, my problem is: I'm (totally, miserably) lame enough to only be vaguely familiar with Sonic Youth. (Yes, I know who they are, what they've done, etc etc, just haven't listened to them much. I know I lose my right to post here just by admitting it.) And though I'm more into the Flaming Lips, I'm not sure how much fun I'd have being the only sober person there. ;)
EDIT: I've realized that obviously the solution to this is start listening to Sonic Youth immediately. So here I go.
-
NO! go Sister then Murray Street then Daydream Nation
-
Hahha ahh confliction! I downloaded Daydream Nation to start with because it was the only thing I could find on BitTorrent. Apparently it's not the one I should start with though? Other Sonic Youth that I've heard is Kool Thing and stuff on the subUrbia soundtrack.
I'll try to find Sonic Nurse and/or Murray Street next.
-
I really like Daydream Nation, but I don't think it's a very good starting point for most people. I always reccomend Sister as it's accesible but still edgy. I don't usually reccomend Murray Street as a starter even if it is my favourite Sonic Youth album because the tracks are quite long.
-
Goo is for sissies.
brandie: you may want to try anther prgram called soulseek. Or if you buy the Sonic Youth DVD you get all of Goo and a good sampler of all their post-Daydream stuff.
Now for something on topic: Summer Concert season here is barren. The most appealing thing until September (when I'm going to the New Pornographers) is a TATU concert 4 hours away.
-
I just saw The Lovely Feathers with The Spinto Band, and both were amazing! :-)
The Spinto Band was particularly impressive live, lots of energy. Although The Lovely Feathers might even beat them at energy. Basically, it was a ridiculously energetic show! (and there were only about 20 people there!)
-
Wee for me being the odd guy out on this one. Regrettably, I can't go to soo Dave Matthews Band at Madison Square Garden with OAR opening, but I am seeing OAR themselves at the end of June. I'm still keeping my eyes open for other shows worth attending around the Maryland area, anybody have a suggestion?
-

You must be utilizing some obscure definition of the word "appealing."
-
I wish, it's honestly the most appealing one, which should tell you the level of shittiness most other concerts are.
-

Hell yeah I can't wait I also caught Bright Eyes here in Winnipeg just last night actually. I thought it was a great show MUCH better than his show in Fargo ND that I went to last year. HE also mentioned how he lost 150 Canadian Dollars betting at the Saskatoon horse race track, but than hit the trifecta (spelling) at the Belmont so he was back on top again. Great show, good venue for Bright Eyes (The Burton Cummings Theatre) and Gruff Rhys was fantastic.
-
Possible shows:
Agalloch
Kamelot with Epica (oh hell yes)
-
Agalloch are touring?! LINK LINK LINK

Part of me just thought that was stage banter. That's even funnier, then.
Maybe we'll see each other at Wilco? We'll chat. QC Connection fo realz.
-
Well, lesse here:
I saw the same Bright eyes concert as you, although in Victoria. I did enjoy Rhys, although when he sampled the audience, he asked us to make the sound of a moose. Some guy simply screamed "MOOOOSE" and was sampled. It destroyed the ambiance of a deep song, and turned it into a joke, which I must admit, all of us, including Rhys, and Connor, enjoyed.
I am scheduled to see Broken Social Scene in July
And Leslie Feist later this month.
-
...Where's Feist playing? You said you're in Victoria, so I'm imagining it's not too far from Vancouver...
-
...Where's Feist playing? You said you're in Victoria, so I'm imagining it's not too far from Vancouver...
She's actually playing in Vancouver aswell.
I think that might save you some gas ;)

Also another great part of the show was that the fiddle player (who was amazing) was celebrating his 25th birthday and so we all sang happy birthday for him and he busted out a wicked fiddle solo in demonstraion of his talents, it was impressive. Where are your seats for Wilco? I'm on the 1st balcony which is too bad though I've heard that the balcony is alright, I've been lucky and managed the floor in all my previous expierences.
-
I'm either first or second balcony, I can't remember which. The fan club got all the good seats, I think.
-
I've missed The Fall of Troy twice in the past 3 months, and that makes me kind of upset. Though I saw them last October, so it's not that big of a deal.
But I might see Say Anything in July, and I'm seeing Jim Gaffigan this Friday.
And Me and Him Call It Us are playing with Destroyer Destroyer sometime either this month or next...
-

Yeah I had that problem too, hey what song did Bright Eyes close with at your show? In Winnipeg it was a cover (I think) and I've been trying to figure out who it's by, I'm 80 percent it's Neil Young but I can't seem to remeber.
-
I saw FoT two days in a row over spring break with Fear Before The March Of Flames, Versus The Mirror on the first night, The Chariot and Russian Circles on the next. Recockulously good times.
Have you seen them before?
Yeah, I saw them last October with Fear Before..., Since by Man, and Bear vs Shark
It was pretty awesome
-
13.7 Oren Ambarchi (Opening act: 17 Migs Of Spring)
19.7 Oren Ambarchi with other Israeli musicians
20.7 Stephen O'Malley + Oren Ambarchi (Opening act: Pochlatz)
22.7 Stephen O'Malley + Oren Ambarchi (Opening act: Lebanon)
24.7 Stephen O'Malley + Oren Ambarchi (Opening act: TBA)
OHBOYOHBOYOHBOYOHBOY!
It a Drone/Sludge/Ambient summer.
I just hope I have enough money for all of it.
-

She's actually playing in Vancouver aswell.

Oh, so that's at the folk festival then? When you said it was this month, I thought you meant in June, which would mean I'd actually be able to get to that show. Unfortunately I'm out of town for the folk fest, as well as a bunch of other great shows.
-
Wee! The only show I am going to is Radiohead on the 24th at UC Berkeley. Opening act DEERHOOF. It is going to be many kinds of awesome.
-
Wilco is the best live show ever.
I got punched at a Bright Eyes show.
I am saing them both this summer, at different festivals.
Day by Day reports from Bonaroo, starting thursday.
Bitches.
If anyone wants to drink beers there, PM me.

Some shit about singing a song and they don't know what it means. It went on til I would say quarter past should-have-played-"Road-To-Joy."
Hobo: Yeah, well, screw you and your excellent location. I hope you have a fantastic time, jerk.

I live in rural Manitoba. I'm doing the best I can.

There was recently a good festival around these parts called music waste. Most of the show's were kinda lame but I still went to a whole bunch of them. The best one was "They Shoot Horses" with Love and Mathematics and some other bands. ...Horses is incredible live for those who've never seen them.
Also I went to the Ladyhawk show for their CD release. I was kind of obliged to because they're pals of mine, but they were awesome as usual. For you folks who don’t know who Ladyhawk are you soon will; they're going to be huge I promise.
Anyways, yeah shows are good.
-
BRING ME THE HEAD OF THE ONE THEY CALL "LADYHAWK"
Seriously, Ladyhawk are great. Congrats on having talented friends.
-
Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth.
be your own PET opened for them and were incredible but really depressing once I realized a band of kids younger than me were OPENING FOR SONIC YOUTH.
Anyone at the show (9:30 Club, I was at the late one).
-
Hopefully I am seeing Bardo Pond at their CD release party tonight. Bardo Pond are amazing and more.
But tomorrow night I will hopefully see Dead Meadow (FUCKING FINALLY) and motherfucking goddamn Blue Cheer. Blue Cheer, who were exploding dogs with their amps all the way back in 1968. Jesus Christ they're old, and Dickie Peterson is the only member still operating, but I fully expect to have the everloving shit rocked out of me.
I'd rant about Dead Meadow and how they're the best band to come out in the last 5 years but nobody here listens to them or knows who they are so my raves will get lost in the shuffle of bands nobody has heard of and be wasted. Frankly I expect a better show out of them than Blue Cheer's decades-old and diluted live presence, but I made a bigger point out of Blue Cheer above because people might recognize the name and pay attention and the internet might love me more.
-
I KNOW I'm going to see Against Me!, The Soviettes and The Epoxies in November. If I miss that concert I will fucking kill something.
I'm hoping to see A Silver Mount Zion in August, but we'll see.
-
dead meadow were one of the most intensely blah bands ive ever seen. totally mediocre.
lookin forward to pitchfest, comets on fire, and im sure wolf eyes for the umpteenth time, some other dudes, maybe a few other, but not sonic youth or the flaming lips because they are only playing lollapalooza in chicago. im not forking over $$ to watch those guys play a half hour.
-
They Might Be Giants at the end of July. So excited.
-
Gah, are the Flaming Lips REALLY not going to be touring Canada? :( And if they do they better stop by Vancouver! They BETTER.
I think I'm going to the Broken Social Scene/The Stills/Sam Roberts show in July.
Not much else planned, maybe Folk Fest.
-
Ug, I'm so not happy to be missing that BSS show, it sounds like it'd be so good. However, I might be going to see Wolf Parade and Frog Eyes in August, and mayhaps Bumbershoot, which is looking to be an awesome festival.

Hmm, Wolf Parade...
*goes to hunt tickets*

Just saw Band of Horses at the Warsaw in Williamsburg. Bridwell was in top form, and contrary to some of the stuff I've read, the band was mostly in tune and spent relatively little time tuning. They saved Funeral until the end of the encore, which was pretty clever on their part I thought. The new material sounds great, although its a little softer and more emotive than the stuff on Everything All The Time. Some cock in the audience yelled "Freebird!", apparently the same person who yelled "When is the next album coming out?" I thought Bridwell was going to find him and strangle him for a moment, but he just made a joke out of it and played on.
All in all, great concert. Highly recommend to anyone on one of the remaining touring dates who was considering it.

I just grabbed tix to the august 29th show (buffalo)- $10, only a 10 minute walk from my house. didn't even know they were coming around my area lol. Also xiu xiu in mid-october....

Funeral is the perfect song to end off a set with. Man I wish I could see them.
-
I am seeing Eric Clapton with my whole family this july, which for me is mainly to see the old rock dinosaur. I don't listen to his music and I am as tired as anyone of his ballads(oh die Tears in Heaven). Does he play any Cream nowadays? I could go listen to some of it for kicks.
-
NO! go Sister then Murray Street then Daydream Nation
THIS dude is ON FORM, when it comes to The Youth
-
However he forgot EVOL which is obviously better than Murray Street and without hearing any of the other stuff I highly doubt they can top that.
Accessible? Pfew! You want to get to the good stuff no? everyone's first taste of The Youth should be EVOL. It has Expressway to Yr. Skull, In the Kingdom #19, Tom Violence, Shadow of a Doubt, Star Power, Marilyn Moore etc. All veritable classics if you ask me, even the satirefeast Bubblegum is great.
-
I have planned myself a trip.
I'm going to see the Pitchfork Festival, stay with my brother in Minnesota, then storm back down into Illinois to watch Lollapalooza.
This will be several shades of awesome.
-
goin' a see Graveworm, Vader, Destruction and Kataklysm tomorrow. plus two other bands who sound like they suck hard.
-

We can just reccomend Anagrama (well, not really) or Hidros 3 and watch as they never ever listen to your suggestions again. But yes EVOL is great.
For sheer accesibility, however, we'd reccomend Rather Ripped and Dirty. I recently started listening to Dirty again, and I honestly can't remember why I hated it.
And concerts: Summer season remains dry, with only one band (Zoé) worth seeing, and that's not until September.
-
I will be at the Sonic Youth/Go! Team show in Milwaukee on August 6, and I think that'll mosly be it, unfortunately. It should be fun, though. I'd much prefer to see Confusion is Sex/Bad Moon Rising/EVOL material, but Sonic Youth's new songs aren't bad, and there's always a chance they'll throw in a really old one. As for the Go! Team, I'm not familiar with them but I've heard some good things, so it can't hurt.
-
I saw Sonic Youth on Friday, and they were incredible. The majority of the songs they played were new, but they played a song off Confusion is Sex during the encore, and it was mind blowing.
-
That's great, Karl. Which song was it? I re-listened to the live in Venlo CD the other day, and it's amazing.
-
Conspiring winds in the world have brought me great fortune in this department.
While trying to figure out a place to stay when myself and Johnny C go to Winnipeg on Saturday to see Wilco, I looked up an old friend from around there. He can't let us crash at his place, but it looks like he has an extra ticket to the Flaming Lips/Sonic Youth show at the Minnesota State Fair. So I'm pretty much there, and I'm spinning uncontrolably in my swivel office chair at the thought.
Other than all that, I'm checking out the amazing Ladyhawk (http://www.ladyhawkladyhawk.com/), Jagjaguwar signees and friends of the Blood Meridian and Black Mountain crews. Plus, Steve Earle is playing in my town, so I'm gonna be sneaking out of a wedding to check it out. Wolf Parade's on the same night, but I know where my loyalties lie. And it isn't with the bride and groom, apparently.
-
This is the first I've heard of the Winnipeg arrangements not workin'. Hotel, then, I guess?
-
I'm going to that winnipeg show it's going to be fantastic, if I had room I'd let you guy's crash, but no luck. There's many a hotel in the very close vicinity to the show, it should be fine.
-
already saw modern life is war, bane, this is hell, and outbreak(all in 1 night!)
definately going to see dustin kensrue at the knitting factory in late july, and maybe songs:ohia in september.
-
Lady Sovereign/The Streets tonight at Webster Hall. I anticipate being one of the three people there more interested in seeing Lady Sov than Mike Skinner. But I don't care.
-
goin' a see Graveworm, Vader, Destruction and Kataklysm tomorrow. plus two other bands who sound like they suck hard.
Well, the 2nd tour bus broke down somewhere, so I saw Destruction, Kataklysm and Vader. I really, really wanted to see Graveworm, but being able to see Destruction play Bestial Invasion was good enough for me. On the plus side, I didn't have to sit through those two other crappy bands.
-
yay for canadian summer concerts
a free show this weekend with the dears & jason collett at harbor front
the hold steady at the end of july
wolf parade & frog eyes
if I have money maybe futureheads too.
also, it was announced on the radio that dfa79/constantines/arcade fire are going to do a show at olympic island in august. I can't seem to find any information about it though, has anyone else heard about it?
-
I want to see DFA 1979 so hard. Are there plans for second album (not counting that remix bs)
-
This is the first I've heard of the Winnipeg arrangements not workin'. Hotel, then, I guess?
Oops. That's not the best way to find out. Sorry.
While I'm at it, I can't make it to your wedding (whenever that may be) or any of your birthdays for the next five years. It's easiest to tell you this way.
As per a new DFA 1979 album, they aren't planning one, they're planning three, or at least according to this vintage Pitchfork post (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/34611/Death_From_Above_1979_Plan_Three_New_Albums#34611). I haven't heard anything more than that, and the news item says it was supposed to be out spring 2006. If they are still recording the album they've been tight lipped about it.
Maybe Jesse just wants to devote more time to MSTRKRFT.

And there was no merch. So going into it, there were two strikes, but they managed to hit a decent triple, if not an inside-the-park homerun.
I was there too!! I agree, the venue was absolutely terrible. It was like a barn in there. Terrible. And then the no merchandise thing kind of sucked. I nearly cried when Conor first started. He was amazing. I loved First Day of My Life. Also, after the show I got Conor's beer cans! Three of my friends and I, after everyone had asked for the set list and what not, asked for the beer cans. And they were still cold and still half full so we drank them (in the bathroom.) He was drinking Labatt Blue. So then I did too. And then, my friend found $110.00 on the bathroom floor. So, it really was the best night of my life. I drank Conor's beer, still have the can, became $110.00 richer (well my 3 friends and I) and I got to listen/watch Conor all night.
Oh. And I MIGHT be going to the Calgary Folk Fesitval to see Feist (for my second time) and Broken Social Scene. Hopefully.
(PS I'm one of Tawnya's best friends.)
-
I saw Neko Case on Sunday. The opening act was a surprisingly good folk artist named Sonny Smith. His lyrics were witty and he had a great presence. In between him and Neko I ran and bought both the records he has, one EP and on album.
Neko Case, however, blew him away. Her stage banter was hilarious and her voice was superb. To tell the truth, I wasn't at all familiar with her solo stuff, but I'm going to have to go and pick some up, I was just massively impressed. Halfway through one song a string on her guitar broke, so she had to stop and use a different one for the song, while she switched she was cracking jokes the whole time. If any of you have the chance to see her, I highly, highly recommend it, it was easily one of my favorite shows.
-
Also, after the show I got Conor's beer cans! Three of my friends and I, after everyone had asked for the set list and what not, asked for the beer cans.
I was regaled with this story! It is a "gooder."
(PS I'm one of Tawnya's best friends.)
This I also recall.
Good luck with the Broken Social Scene. Also, Feist is the only artist I have time to see at the Folk Fest in Regina this year; however, since she's doing some day sessions with a locla band I am excited.
-
Saw BSS last night, absolutely incredible. Feist and Bell Orchestre tomorrow, and Fiery Furnaces, Metric, Wilco and the New Pornographers coming up next week. Love Bluesfest.
-
Good luck with the Broken Social Scene. Also, Feist is the only artist I have time to see at the Folk Fest in Regina this year; however, since she's doing some day sessions with a locla band I am excited.
If I don't get to go to Calgary Folk Festival... Right now, it's not looking promising, because for some reason my mom doesn't feel like going to see her son in Calgary so I can be happy and go see BSS and Feist, then I will most definitely be at the Regina Folk Festival, to see Feist. If only my parents weren't so paranoid, and would let me go by myself. But, I guess that's understandable.
Marauder: That sounds amazing. You're very lucky to be able to go see all of those bands. I'm in awe.
-
BSS last week. Mission of Burma, the Siren Festival, and possibly the free Yo La Tengo show at Prospect Park next week.
For Siren Festival, I'm planning on hanging out at a good location at the Stillwell stage all day and seeing:
Priestess
Man Man
Dirty on Purpose
Serena Maneesh
The Cribs
Art Brut
Stars
