Title: Bright Eyes' When the President Talks to God sans iTunes
Post by: schimmy on 10 Jun 2006, 13:55
I recently got into Bright Eyes, so I want to hear When the President Talks to God, but I'm in the UK, and the UK iTunes library doesn't have it. So, does anybody know if it's possible to get it any other way, or, for that matter, whether it's even worth listening to? Thanks for any help in advance.

Definitely worth listening to. One of the best songs off of the last couple CDs.

iTunes UK might not have it, but Amazon.co.uk does. You can get it on this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007XTPZG) CD.

Very good song, definitely worth having.

It's weird though, I got it off iTunes a while ago. They must've removed it.

Isn't it a b-side, and so non-album?

I don't like it either. I don't really care for the political message, the music itself is rather weak. Bright Eyes can do much better.

It's also one of the tracks on the rather good Motion Sickness live record.

I think most of the song is pretty well written, except for one line that is silly and melodramatic.

Quote from: Conor Oberst
Does he ask to rape our womens rights

Probably because, to me, using the word "rape" in a figurative sense is cheesy.

Unless he means the plant, in which it doesn't make sense!

Its not a very good song though, why couldn't he just call Bush a cock and be over with it.
Frankly bush bashing is quite boring, especially when all you are doing is poking shots at a caricature of your own making.
He should stick with being angsty, he can't do political any more than Neil Young can.

I have to say I'm not terribly fond of it, his over-pronounced accent on it irritates me.
Anyone who liked the general message but not the delivery should listen to Desaparecidos. Oberst + Politics + More heaviness than B.E stuff.

Also, not that I would advertise, recommend or condone it, you could probably find this on limewire / similar program. Should you be so inclined.

Dude I miss that album, I never got tired of it but cos I love it so much I leant it to my friend and he lost it. Fucking imported and he lost it. And he's broke so he wont be able to replace it for a while. Why?!!!! *cry*
I wish Conor would do more Desaparecidos stuff, he clearly still has the motive.

sjbrot put their Saddle Creek compilation contribution onto a mix for me. It is called "Popn' Off At The F" and it's a goddamn good song.

Who's up for makin' some more BLOOD MONEY?

Don't mean to derail the thread, but I think Living With War is rocking and one of his best albums in years. Granted, it's very heavy handed (obviously) but, unlike "When the President Talks to God", the music itself gets a thumbs up and I can actually listen to it.

I downloaded this song because of all the hub-ub here... sucks.

Desaparecitos, however, are excellent.

Desaparecidos, to me, is just flat out more interesting than Bright Eyes. I don't really care about the messages; I'm speaking solely in terms of the music.

Naw, I like the range of styles within Bright Eyes, the only criticism I'd have of the Desaparecidos album would be that on first listen the tracks are all pretty similar. Good, dont get me wrong, I guess thats just because its only one album not the huge catalog of B.E stuff.

Thanks for the help. I've got a copy now, I'm suprised that it sounds so different from other BE stuff, they struck me as the sort of band that could only play one way. I think the song's really good, but I think the accent he's singing in will start to grate if I listen to it too much.
