Title: Recommend me some Black Flag.
Post by: Thrillho on 22 Jun 2006, 16:59
Okay, so presumably, them being a punk band, there isn't a collection of Black Flag.

So my question to you is, which studio album do I buy?

If it matters, I decided I wanted to get into this based on three things:

1. Hearing TV Party on Futurama.
2. Seeing the video to it on MTV2.
3. Henry Rollins being a fucking legend.

After doing a quick search, I came up with Damaged. It is the album with 'TV Party' on it. Done.

Thanks for utilising a rudimentary grasp of search engines.

I'm not specifically asking for the album with that song on it. I'm finding out whether this is completely unlike them, or if the album with that song on it is in fact the best one, etc.

Actually, do get Damaged. It's their first studio album, the first one with Rollins on it, and it is damned good.

So what were the previous releases? Were they live bootlegs with a different singer?

They released two EPs before Rollins, technically. Damaged was the first actual album.

Alright. Apparently Damaged also has Six Pack on it. Been wanting to check that song out.

Bonus.

Chars for the help, chums.

I'm afraid I can't stand the Stooges. Iggy Pop annoys me, although I can accept that they had a hand in inventing the modern (or 70s) idea of what punk is.

However, Black Flag I know a few songs by and liked them. This is why I'm asking for one album to see if I like it. If I don't, it's just one record. I can flog to someone and only have pissed away a quid or two.

The Stooges are wonderful. Seriously, if you hate the stooges you hate life. and kittens. and other furry things.

Oh, is this the new "let's talk about every fucking awesome punk band ever" thread? Because I can totally do that.

Then do, because I need to get into punk as badly as I need to get into the Avante Garde.  And throw some album titles in there, just because I know with punk, a lot of bands have terrible consistency within their output, so it helps to know what to track down.

Oh, since I still haven't sent it (Oh shiz), You want me to burn a third cd with punk n shit? Cause I can do that still.

Aside from what has been mentioned vis a vis Black Flag and Bad Brains, the following records are indispensible, even if you do not like them:

The Anti-Nowhere League - We Are the League
The Clash - London Calling
Cock Sparrer - Shock Troops
Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles
The Misfits - Static Age
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks...
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
The UK Subs - Brand New Age

And that'll kick you off. Then, Well I dunno. Get a load of Hellcat Records samplers for a start.

Ooooh, I'm getting 2(3) CDs now?  Kai, you're my hero.  More than you were anyway.  And hell, I'm not going to say no to the third CD.

Totally 3 cds. I think since I'm having such an ass getting to the post office I might as well make it worth the wait.

Pffft, you're still doing better than me.  You think I've made my mixtape?  OF COURSE NOT.  Now, I could blame that on the fact that my computer is broken, but that'd be too simple.

Kai, I'll send you my double CD eventually, I'm still tracking down all the shit, and I've got an amazon.com order with a couple of brand new CDs and I'll add a song or two from those if I like them. I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten.

Storm, wake the fuck up. When was the last time you checked your PMs? We were meant to have a swapsy going on in the whole mixtape thing so I could send you a CD.

That would be great... If I lived in England.

You see that location thing under my avatar? Pretty sure California isn't in the UK yet.

Except technically California Uber Alles isn't an album, it's a single.

Get Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.

I have Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, but I haven't listened to it enough to really make any judgment on it yet. I'll revisit it when I'm in a punky (is that a word?) mood.

I always get confused with the Dead Kennedys. Like, which one's a single, which is an album, which is a compilation. It confuzzles me. I'm like that with a few bands which I mainly listen to on the computer.

The Germs I agree with.  Did no one mention Flipper?  I'm still angry to this day that what I had thought to be Sex Bomb Baby turned out to be one of their later albums.  Free Beer.  Flux of Pink Indians but then maybe some won't like them.  For fuck sake I whole heartedly recomend Rudimentary Peni.

With the Dead Kennedys you have some songs that are on several different albums and maybe several EPs.  And several EPs on an album and so forth.

It does get a little confusing. I still couldn't tell you what fucking album Police Truck came out on first.

do a search for the words "sex bomb" and see how many hits you get from me.
this is my anthem.

the only good album is 'album: generic' though.

I meant in this thread.  I kind of just skimmed it or spaced out a bunch.  I'll have to try and remember that for the next time I purchase music.

Rudimentary Peni is quite possibly one of my favourite bands.  I honestly believe that Nick Blinko is what Mike Patton only wishs he could be, as far as weird singing goes.

Seriously pick up The Anti-Nowhere League.

The league are awesome.

Stiff Little Fingers are great too.

The Clash are important

Then there is slightly less 70s punk and more 80s hardcore stuff:

Rites Of Spring.

Minor Threat.

Fugazi.

You'll be set then.
