Ok so I have literally just finished listening to every single pogues album ever back to back. Barring "best of"'s and all that.
I've got Shane Macgowan and the popes to go yet.
So Discuss.

I have one Pogues best of w/ live at Brixton Academy and Red Roses For Me. All are brilliant. The Pogues had some fucking brilliantsongs.
-
i have rum sodomy and the lash & if i should fall from grace with god. the latter very awesome. the former just mediocre awesomeness. they performed live with katie melua (if i recall correct) on the bbc (jools holland)..and it sounded crap because shane was drunk (as usual) and they all are a bit older now obviously. still a great band though
-
I love Rum, Sodomy and the Lash but I haven't heard anything else, which of course I need to remedy.
-
It's pretty hard to hate the Pogues I think, because that kind of stomping Irish music will get just about anyone dancing. If I Should Fall from Grace with God is fantastic. 'Bottle of Smoke', 'Thousands are Sailing' and of course "Fairytale of New York' are just brilliant songs… what else can I say?
-
I think the Pogues are underrated in their orchestral brilliance. A lot of people think that 'Fairytale' is like, the only respite from the noise. But it isn't. I personally prefer 'Rainy Night In Soho' and the majestic 'Misty Morning, Albert Bridge' to 'Fairytale.' Both of them have wonderful orhcestral sweeps as good or better.
-
I agree the Pogues have always been underrated in how brilliant their compositions are. Shane is an outstanding lyricist.

Wasn't really a looker though.

Hmm, true always had a bit of a problem with the dental industry. From what I understand a Dentist killed his momma and raped his daddy... but you know it could just be that he was constantly inebriated.
-
I love the pogues so much that I started a band that was largly influenced by them. I'm currently listening to the Poguetry in Motion EP - It is one of the few flawless records I've ever heard.
Edit:
I also saw them around St Patricks day this year at the Orpheum here in Boston. It was nothing short of spellbinding.

Wow, you guys are good. You should really come down Arkansas way so I could catch a show. If you do the whole touring thing that is.
-
So, were I to listen to something after Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God, what would it be? I love both of them...
-
More people need to listen to Red Roses for Me. It gets a bit of a bad wrap, but I love it. I mean, I adore Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God too, but Red Roses for Me is probably the Pogues album I listen to most often. It's far and away their punkiest, most energetic album. Just take a listen to "Transmetropolitan" and see if you aren't sucked in!

Thank you. We're non-touring for the time being, but we're hoping to at least hit the west/east coasts next year. Currently we're working on our debut album this summer, hopefully it will be out in september.

I think the saddest thing I felt about the whole ending of Christmas 05 was that I couldn't listen to "Fairytale of New York" for a whole year.
They're a pretty good band though in general, my favourite song would probably be "A Pair of Brown Eyes" because it reminds me of an old alcoholic friend of mine.
-
What the hell do you mean you couldn't listen to it for a whole year? That's crazy talk! That's like saying I should only listen to Billy Bragg's "St. Swithin's Day" on the 15th of July.

I associate it as a Christmas song and I associate people who listen to Christmas songs when it's not Christmas as perverse and the spawn of satan who further the degradation of common decency.
-
It's a song about Christmas, not really a "Christmas song" per se. You wouldn't find it on most generic Christmas compilation CDs (which are the real spawn of satan), and I don't consider it to be in the same league as 'I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas' or 'Jingle Bell Rock'.
-
I listen to Fairytale at non-christmas times of the year. It's possibly the only christmas song to get such treatment, apart from 'Fuck Christmas' by Tankard and the entire 'A Very Scary Solstice' CD from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society.
-
I listen and sing to Christmas carols all year, sadly I'm not Satan's Spawn.

while your associations are important, you should never let them get in the way of the pogues. period. they could write an easter bunny song and it would still be amazing (and have some tragedy and a high alcohol content).
would now be a bad time to say that i prefer flogging molly?

Not really; apples and oranges - Both are fantastic bands, and clearly FM is influenced by the Pogues, but both MacGowan and King are two -very- distinct personalities, as both songwriters and performers. King is like that granddad of yours that's got some great stories to tell, and generally puts a smile on your face, MacGowan fits closer in the ranks of Bukowski or Burroughs: Unique and fascinating characters that are (no pun inteaded) headed Straight to Hell. Which, incedently, they played on the PA before the Pogues took the stage last st paddys.

OK, but they're just not as fun to sing along to :D
Youre a bum
Youre a punk
Youre an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse
I pray God its our last

Actually, alot of the crassness of Shane's writing really add to the charm. He's quite the scumbag when he's not being a balladeer
The day being clear
The sky being bright
He came up on the left
Like a streak of light
Like a drunken fuck
On a saturday night
Up came the bottle of smoke
...
Fuck the yanks
And drink their wives
The moon is clear
The sky is bright
Im happy as the horses shite
Up came the bottle of smoke
(edit: fixed a screwup on the lyric cut and paste)
