Title: Battle of teh Bands Campaigning
Post by: OpenJamie on 25 Jun 2006, 11:18
Think your favourite band deserves more votes?  Last ditch attempt to get them through the rigorous screaning process and build up support. Want to moan about the crap that got more votes than them?

Basically what this topic is for to avoid conjesting the other topic which can then be used more for results, surgestions for improvements etc.

COME ON PEOPLE!  THE DOORS!  What'd Jim Morrison ever do to you guys?

Oh, and Wolf Parade, they're pretty awesome to, but seeing as how I'll abandon them the second I have to choose between them and The Doors, I don't mind all too much.

Where is the Bowie love people?

Look folks, I'm a big fan of all these hip acts from the last few years- but its really lame just to forget about all the older acts.

Maybe we should have had two different battles - best classic band and best band playing today.

Again, go vote for Bowie. And Kraftwerk. Right now.

I am pretty sure I am under both Bowie and Kraftwerk.

But I'm typing for a more serious issue.

There aren't enough people who have voted for Can. Seriously. Can are fucking amazing and I will be seriously disappointed in all of you.

Yeah, I'm also shocked that Can, (according to wikipedia) a German experimental group formed in 1968, that I've never heard of before today, isn't getting more votes.  What the hell guys?  Don't you like music?  At all?

I can't find these guys on Rhapsody.  Could someone send me a track or two?  My email is in my profile.

I like The Arcade Fire and all, but really, they are getting a bit more love than they rightly deserve.  I mean, there's Bowie, there's The Doors, there's tons of other better bands there, where's their love?

Let's not get bitter here, ABBA and Spacemen 3 are both waaaaay better than both Arcade Fire and the Dead Kennedys and no one (except Kai) has voted for them. Instead let's appreciate that this is a place where Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Fugazi are infinitely more appreciated than Linkin Park.

Looks like the 4 top seeds are pretty clear

Arcade Fire- 12
Radiohead- 12
Daft Punk-11
Pixies- 10

The Rest of the 16 seeded teams, as of now:

Architecture in Helsinki- 9
The Smiths- 9
The Beatles- 9
Bob Dylan- 9
Godspeed You! Black Emperor- 9
Joy Division- 9
Broken Social Scene- 9
Jimi Hendrix- 8
Modest Mouse- 8
Neutral Milk Hotel- 8
The Velvet Underground- 8
Wilco-8

Practically guaranteed a spot in the top 32:
Black Sabbath- 7
Sonic Youth- 7
The Decemberists- 7
The Doors- 7
The Flaming Lips- 7
Fugazi- 7
Led Zeppelin- 7

Its really unlikely than any band with 7 votes won't make it through to the next round. But as of now thats only 23 teams.  There are 16 teams competing for those last 9 spots.

The Avalanches- 6
Belle & Sebastian- 6
David Bowie- 6
Dead Kennedys- 6
Explosions in the SKy- 6
Johnny Cash- 6
Kraftwerk- 6
Kyuss- 6
Mogwai- 6
Nirvana- 6
REM- 6
The Stars- 6
Sufjan Stevens- 6
The Talking Heads- 6
Wolf Parade- 6
Frank Zappa Solo- 6

I highly recomend that people vote for Kraftwerk, Bowie and the Talking Heads very quickly. Also, Johnny Cash totally deserves a spot.

And two bands in the 5 vote range that shouldn't be:
My Bloody Valentine- 5
Pavement- 5

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean really. That Wolf Parade album was better than Loveless??? Seriously? Have the Stars had the kind of influence Pavement did?

Also, whats the plan to deal with a tie? How will the seeding be done beyond votes?
Title: Battle of teh Bands Campaigning

call me a walking cliche but nirvana  really should get more votes. yeah ofcourse all those 15 year olds love em, and yeah ofcourse you've heard all those songs very often. point is, they really were a great band.

Random, baby, random.  Ties for seeded places or the bottom of the top 32 will be resolved by picking at random.  Ties in battles will result in both bands proceeding to the next round, for a 3 or 4 way competition (if both preceding rounds ended in ties).

More discussion in this thread.

Although about a billion people will say that Radiohead is (are?) better than The Decemberists hands down, even on a bad day... I still have to say that The Decemberists are freakin' awesome.

I mean, not only did they have one of the best albums of 2005 (both Pitchfork and Amazon.com have said so, if that matters), but they command a multitude of instruments with ease.

Already, a new album is expected in October and that's saying a lot since they had Picaresque, Picaresquities (the b-sides), and Colin Meloy Sings Shirley Collins (from his solo tour) all in 2005 and early 2006. Mind you two bandmembers had wives that were expecting all the while.

So, although Radiohead is commonly hailed as one of the best bands around, you can't deny that The Decemberists are an amazing band. Their songs have great lyrics, they have a variety of different instruments and tunes used, and they're amazing live.

So don't add your name under Radiohead as quickly as you might have before. Think about it first.

Seriously, you can tell we're on an indie board.  I mean, there's really far too little love for the old stuff.  Now, I love my indie, and even Radiohead, and you'll find my name under plenty of those.

But really, THE DOORS!  Have you people listened to Peace Frog lately?  To Break On Through (To the Other Side)?  To L.A. WOMAN!?

I see your hair is burnin'
Hills are filled with fire
If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar
Drivin' down your freeways
Midnite alleys roam
Cops in cars, the topless bars
Never saw a woman...
So alone, so alone
So alone, so alone

Also, I'm really dissapointed in myself.  I was stupid enough to forget to add Bruce Springsteen to the list.  Stupid me.

Anyway, I've actually looked at the matchups and such now, and more campaining:

First off, Neutral Milk Hotel beats Broken Social Scene, and I say this with Broken Social Scene being one of my favorite bands.  Take out your copies of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea everyone, and listen to Communist Daughter and Oh Comely.  They are convieniently located back to back.  If that doesn't make you at least think twice about voting for BSS, you lack a soul!

Next, Stars over REM.  Most of you will likely think I'm crazy, but really, Stars have made some achingly beautiful pop albums, and have two of the best vocalists in indie today.  Granted, REM are great, but they have fallen over the years.  But yeah, I really can't hold it against anyone if they do vote for REM, I suppose.

Joy Division > Nirvana.  Nirvana were good and all, but were they really that great?  And even if you think that they might have been, THEY INSPIRED NICKELBACK!  AND CREED!

I'm not even going to touch Godspeed You! Black Emperor vs. Frank Zappa, Coltrane vs. Black Sabbath, or The Smiths vs. Fugazi, those would be painful.  And the rest, it's looking like things are going well as is.

Except The Doors vs. The Arcade Fire.  Go vote for The Doors!

Jim Morrison's gift for the occasional decent lyric or melodic hook was far outstripped by his penchant for being a complete fuckwit with a godawful approach to poetry ("MOTHER I WANT TO FUCK YOU" - what literary talent). The Doors were an okay band at best.

The Arcade Fire have made one album, and without resorting to shock or obscenity made a startlingly strong name for themselves. They deserve the "critical darling" tag, if only because they deserve every bit of hype they've received, through an album chock-full solid pop songwriting and - and this is important, kids, so pay attention - some lyrical and musical immediacy, two things that The Doors were lucky to do once in a while, and both of them were often ruined by ridiculous runtimes and masturbatory organ solos. Plus, their live act is literally the most unifying show I've ever seen; an entire room was simply enthralled.

So you could vote for a "classic rock" band whose major contribution to music was making guys who smoke a lot of dope seem insightful, or you could vote for a modern band with one of the more finely-crafted records and awe-inspiring concerts to hit the music world in a long time. Your choice, guys.

The Arcade Fire has released one album. Now, I'll be the first to admit that Jim Morrisson's 'poetry' was often anything but poetic, but it seems to me that the choice is between a band that often exemplified the rock n' roll attitude of the 60s or a bunch of band geeks that have gone so deep into the pit of uncool that they have somehow come out the other side and are now riding the cutting edge of pretentious hipsterism.
Title: Battle of teh Bands Campaigning

Whether or not the bands that the Doors inspired are shitty is irrelevant; the fact is, the Arcade Fire have not really innovated on anything, nor represented a rise of any particular genre, or influenced anyone (yet). As such, do they deserve the title of 'Best Band Ever' on any level?

Not to  mention they have  one album, and as such there isn't nearly enough of a catalog to truly judge them by.

There's no real justification for why the Doors and Velvet Underground are currently tied. VU trump the Doors at every turn, and the only good lasting effect from the rise of the Doors was that it allowed Ray Manzereck to use his pull to get X signed.
