Title: Music Suggestions - Help Me!
Post by: TopKnot on 25 Jun 2006, 22:58
Hello, I'm completely new, isn't it fun?  Well, i need some help. It's getting really hard to find decent music nowadays. My tastes are, apparently, really weird. I used to be a HUGE metalhead, but i ran out of decent metal and opened my horizons a bit, and whenever i go back to metal now i find that it gives me a HUGE headache. i know, i'm a lightweight.

so anyway. i started with metal. my main problem was finding metal that was FAST enough. so i figured i liked music with speed. looked up some speed metal, some CRAZy fast stuff... didnt do it for me. so it's not speed. what about eccentricities? i tried ska. ska is GODLY, but very few bands interest me. kept going like this for a while, until i realized...

what i need is ENERGY. now a friend of mine suggested some indie stuff right about the time i found QC, so i checked some of his favorites out. right now, i HATE pavement. like wow, i can't stand them. no energy. another band i have a HUGE problem with is Mogwai. seriosuly great name. but just... eh. i get bored too quick. add4tw.

so can anyone help me? i'm in desperate need of good music. genre doesnt matter (i'm openminded to a fault) but i need ENERGY, or simply it's gotta be amazing.

thanks in advanceeeee ^^

EL TESTAMENTE

Which means.

I am required to reccomend The Residents. and Crotchduster.

You could check out some punk if you want energy. See other people's recommendations in the Black Flag thread.

I'm required to reccomend Super Ae and Pop Tatari by Boredoms, if you need Energy.

Do you like VU? White Light/ White Heat is a pretty passionate album. Boris has energy in folds too. The White Stripes can be pretty intense, and of course The Residents, and a lot of punk stuff. Try the sex pistols?

Except my recommendation is, you know, applicable.

Yes, Testament, sometimes referred to as the fifth member of the Big Four of Thrash, they had fairly good success during the heyday of Bay Area Thrash in the late 80s, but never sold as well as the Big Four itself despite being better than all of them (no disgrace to Anthrax or Megadeth). They had two notable phases, the straight-up thrash period (example song: Into the Pit (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=7F71D71708EA19AF)) of their first 5 releases, followed by a gradual incorporation of death metal into their sound, peaking at 1994's Low, before settling into the  thrash/death hybrid of their latest offering to date, 1999's The Gathering (Do Not Resuscitate (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4FF1034332F741F6)). Unfortunately, the diagnosis of their vocalist with a rare type of brain cancer followed by a back injury to their rhythm guitarist/primary songwriter Eric Peterson sidelined their career for several years.

But did I mention THEY'RE BACK TOGETHER AND WILL BE RECORDING SOON HAAGHABAHGALGHBA

See, Tommy's not the only one who can write a crapload about a band nobody else cares about.

My suggestion is metal, but if it gives you a headache, well, I'll be surprised.

SKYCLAD!

The later stuff, which is what I recommend to you (albums such as 'Folkemon' and 'The Answer Machine?') is probably only about as heavy as, say, Thin Lizzy. It's awesome, upbeat folk metal. If you enjoy ska, there's no way it can annoy you, and there's basically few songs in the world more energetic and fun than, say, 'Polkageist!', 'Spinning Jenny', 'Great Blow for a Day Job', 'On With Their Heads!' etc.

Unfortunately, they only have one video from the period I'm recommending, and it's not their best song, though it's still awesome and in the period I'm talking about:

Skyclad - Inequality Street (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTkiBvAa6Pc)

There's also some other stuff on youtube, a slideshow with part of Polkageist! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nz0OX_yQwM), and an older video from a slightly heavier but still amazing period: Skyclad - Thinking Allowed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD8H5qwFMds)

Speaking of folk, there's lots of upbeat energetic folky stuff. Try The Whiskey Priests and maybe the Brobdignagian Bards.

Also, Psychobilly et al. Particularly Batmobile, Nekromantix, The Ghastly Ones, Tiger Army, The Ghastly Ones and the Meteors, though maybe keep away from stuff like The Coffinshakers.

I'd recommend some punk as well, but it might hurt your ears...actually, that's no excuse, listen to New Model Army and Cock Sparrer. At least.

...Also, ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-So4wMPtOAE)

(Watch the vid till at least a minute in, the song at the starts a joke thing)

Hmm, I'll second Be your own pet.. though sometimes the lyrics.. are ummm lacking. Might also say Blood Brothers or perhaps DOA. You might also like Death from above 1979. Who knows if you want to venture out a bit further the Clash is always worth it...you might like the Replacements as well. Errm.. give those a shot, if you like anything in that vain let me know and I can suggest a lot of others.

thanks everyone for your suggestions. i've taken down all of the band names and album titles, and i'm asking all my crazy music-loving friends (the lazy bastards who cant hook me up with a recomendation past "dude slayer") to hook me up with some mixes. so far i've gotten some Acid Mothers Temple... and i still am not feeling any energy lol. i'm going to keep trying though.

oh also, one band suggested to me is Broken Social Scene... are they supposed to be good? i dont see it...

well, any specific suggestions? you too stevethepirate, specifics? i've got a bunch of songs off Mr. Beast and... it's just... boring. one of them i like... i think the name was something like...  "Mega-Snake"... it's good. i feel that song. the others... eh. it's just like 6 songs he burned to me real quick, so it might not be the best of the band... but the songs... they're just total shit.

listening to more Acid Mothers Temple as i type this, wtf is this band on? i love it!

heh. that is true, very obviously true. they seem pretty damn good so far. i just opened an email with Modey Lemon attached, let's see what's up...

Modey Lemon - Big Bang. i love this song from the very start. the intro just gets me jumpin and the drums keep me going. the whole song just makes me want to just get up and flail (a throwback to earlier days, i guess). i love it.

Scandinavian War Machine, or whoever recomended Modey Lemon, i seriously love you. this is amazing.

it's kind of impossible to find hardcore without energy put into it.

Post by: TopKnot on 27 Jun 2006, 12:04
eh. ive tried some. hardcore is weird to me, because everyone classifies it differently to me.

i've gotten some "hardcore" that is the slowest, stupidest shit ive ever heard... and 3-4 people SWEAR to me its HC.

i had the Blood Brothers for a while, they kept my attention. still listen to them a bit, they're good. well, not musically good. but for what i need, good.

As Kai says, "Anthem of the Space" is an excellent album.

Also look into "The New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple," "Mantra of Love," "Close Encounter of the Mutants," and basically anything else you can get your hands on.  They've released more records than [insert legendarily prolific band here].

check out "american nightmare - background music"
especially the songs "there's a black hole in the shadow of pru" "hearts" and "AM/PM"

check out "bane - the note"
especially the songs "swan song" "hoods up" and "woulda, coulda, shoulda"

check out "comeback kid - wake the dead"
especially the songs "wake the dead" "partners in crime" and "false idols fall"

check out "refused" (just about any album)

I think that AMT might eventually have more records out than Hawkwind or Zappa.  They released 9 albums in 2005 alone, after 6 in 2004, and 4 have come out this year so far with at least one more in the works.

Also, about half, if not more, of the Hawkwind discography is compilations and other repeats.

That said, though, it's true that Hawkwind have, like, 16 thousand fucking albums.  And frankly I don't really want to know Zappa's count.

Counting singles, there are over 250 official Hawkwind releases, and nowhere near half of those are compilations. You've gotta remember Hawkwind tape every single performance they give and have been releasing at least two live albums a year since the early seventies.

I feel the same need about half of the time, and the bands that I really like the energy from are:
Naked City
Fantomas (metal, but give it a shot)
Ephel Duath (also metal)
Flat Earth Society! If you like jazz, anyway.  And if you do, there's a HUGE AMOUNT OF MUSIC that should fit what you're looking for.
the Lounge Lizards
The Locust
And classically, Lutoslawski, Ravel, Crumb, Penderecki (the last two for extended technique fans).

But really, metal and grindcore and rock and such to the side, it is the jazz music that always strikes me as the most energetic, especially the more modern stuff.

Zappa released about 65 albums when he died, and then since then about 12 albums of unreleased stuff has come out.

I totally second the fall, and if you feel compelled to further pursue the art-punk thing then I reccomend Wire and the Swell Maps. Monoshock have insane amounts of destructive psych energy, but their recordings are none too easy to find.
