Just downloaded U2's "With a Shout" from the album "October." I forgot how good those dudes were when they were still young, angry, and hungry...there's a fucking killer guitar hook in there, and it actually sounds a little like Joy Division- very driving and atmospheric. I need to get back into early U2. The late '70's and early '80's were an awesome time for British rock.

I dunno if U2 ever qualified as 'angry'.
-
LOL See how cool I am because I refuse to believe popular acts could have been awesome back in the day? I am so hip.
Joshua Tree and anything previous was fucking decent. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to be cool.
-
I don't think Storm said anything about awesome. I believe he mentioned "angry".
I never thought of U2 as angry ever either, so.
and War is a pretty boss album.
-
Did I make any statement of quality one way or another?
No, I did not. I just said I didn't think U2 counted as angry. Because I listen to a fucking lot of angry music and U2 is Barney in comparison with say, Exodus.
-
Sorry. Don't like to quote. That was more for Tommy.

I didn't mean so much angry in their music but passionate in general - pissed off at the state of the world and channeling that into their music. When they were still idealistic young punks, instead of complacent, rich celebrities, in other words.

I'd extend that up to Achtung Baby though, but really, that's the only U2 album I really enjoy. The others aren't anything overly special.

I don't really like any "period" of U2, I like War, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, The Unforgettable Fire and Pop

I am, personally, not a big fan of U2. If I remember correctly in an interview once one of the band members said somthing along the lines of "I always thought our music was devine". Though I cant back that up, I do remember reading it at one point.
That being said, there was a band, ADD I believe, that covered Achtung Baby and did an exquisite job. Much better then the origianl, IMHO.

I have an irrational hate for U2. I like some of their songs, but the fact that - much like RHCP - recently they seem to have been 'doing U2' in their most recent couple of albums bugs me.
That is not to say I don't like some songs. I think that 'Beautiful Day' welcome us into the 2000s in fantastic style, and All That You Can't Leave Behind is a good pop album. Outside of that, there's not much I like. The whole earnest Irish thing doesn't do it for me. 'Mysterious Ways' is wonderful, and the live versions of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday,' and even 'Original Of The Species' if I'm pushed. There's a great live album in there somewhere; I think Under The Blood Red Sky showed how good they are, and they're due for another with more recent material on.

....
Beautiful Day is only slightly less hated by me than James Blunt's Beautiful.
I think that it's becasue of the greater airplay of the latter recently.
U2 are fine, but that song...
