What a great movie.
-
I haven't seen it yet, but I love Bill Murrey tons and tons, so I need to soon. Honestly, any movie with him in it is great in my books. I think Groundhog Day caused that for me.
-
Bill Murray + Wes Anderson = great cinema ALWAYS.
EXAMPLES: Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic.
See what I did there? In the biz we call that "concrete evidence."
-
Bill Murray + Wes Anderson + Seu Jorge doing Bowie covers = Daaaaammnnn.

Seconded. Don't forget Henry Selick doing the visual effects.
-
And Noah Taylor. Noah Taylor always makes a movie better.
EDIT: and let's not forget Owen Wilson! Seriously, I know they appear in some shit sometimes, but I love the Wilson brothers.
-
... and a little Cate Blanchett never hurts. :)
-
...plus Angelica Houston as well. And Mark Mothersbaugh doing the soundtrack.
Seriously guys, is this the perfect movie?

Just stop there. That's evidence enough.
-
This is my favourite Wes Anderson movie.
Just the casiotone beats whilst they assault the Pirate's island.... :D
-
I like the little shot of Noah Taylor picking up the cat and moving it away from the test tubes and beakers.
Put a computer in place of the test tubes and beakers and that is my life EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY.
-
...plus Angelica Houston as well.
True that. I'm in the middle of the second season of Huff, and Angelica Houston has been blowing me away.
-
I watched that exactly a year ago, give or take a week, in a hotel in Cardiff waiting for an R.E.M. concert. Amused.
-
It's my favorite movie ever! Barring, of course, the future, I suppose...
Still, great cast, great director, beautiful set, scenery, and ambiance, wonderful graphic effects, and an amazing soundtrack of delicious little techno tracks and Portuguese Bowie for solo guitar and vocals!
Add that all to the fanciful, absurd, yet plausibly human plot and characters, and you've got an excellent movie.
So many awesome scenes, including when he first meets his 'son' and then excuses himself for a moment, raiding the pirate island, being raided by pirates, and of course the ending scenes, both in the submarine watching the shark, and after the show, walking down the stairs and onward.
-
A gunfight with 'Search and Destroy' as the soundtrack. That is the essence of awesome.
-
i love all of the actors in this movie and the music was great, but i thought it was boring. oops. i just generally thought it was dull. which is sad, because i liked rushmore a lot and loved the royal tanenbaums.
-
indeed, "I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm" may be one of Rock's greatest lyrics.
Let's not forget about Jeff Goldblum too, he was great in this film.
Edit: This is in response to Gryff.
-
some of the kids wear the little red skull caps around the school and even to prom cause they love the movie so much

Agreed. I was left with a sort of "meh" feeling afterwards. I love Wes, Murray, the Super Wilson Bros., Bowie covers, etc, but I felt the movie was exeedingly dull. There were some moments, yes, but...eh.
-
Well, Rushmore is definitely a better film in my opinion, but the Life Aquatic is just so quirky and fun and sweet that it is just really fucking likeable. It's not ground-breaking cinema, there are no grand themes, and it doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it, sure, but damn do I love it.
-
Seriously guys, is this the perfect movie?
A clear "yes."
-
Hey! Well, The Royal Tenenbaums is also the perfect movie, so I guess I can't protest too much.
-
STARALFUR~!
That is all.
-
The next person who orgasms over Staralfur gets ridicule.
Ontopic, I watched Rushmore again today. Yay.
Jason Schwarzman is REALLY fucking short in that movie. Like 5 ft tall.
-
that's because a) he's just really short and b) bill murray is fucking huge. especially compared to short people. ^_^
rushmore & royal tanenbaums > life aquatic
-
Disagree. Excellent in different ways. Royal Tenenbaums was minute-by-minute awesome. Life Aquatic had scenes which I found more affecting and indelible, particularly the scene where they discover the spotted leopard shark at the end. Best metaphor involving submerged people since The Graduate.
-

Oops! I guess I got confused because she's in both. And Mark Mothersbaugh did the soundtrack. And oh hell they're very close to having the exact same people involved.
-
Staralfur is actually on my all-time Holy Trinity of songs, and I will rusty spoon duel you over the right to orgasm on, around or about it at any given moment.
-
Bottle Rocket.
Seriously, people.
-
I haven't seen it yet! I hear it's awesome, though. Especially the last scene.
-
Shit, I haven't seen it either. It is on my list though! Serious!
-
I absolutely LOVED this movie. Even though both my friends who had came with me fell asleep (due to lack of "exciting" action scenes, I suppose).
Afterwards, I went on ebay to look for the Zissou red hat and the screenplay. Some of those prices were.. eh. I watched the Royal Tenenbaums soon after, but still preferred Life Aquatic.
I even danced wildly to the chase music (Ping! Lightning Strikes) and sobbed during "The Way I feel Inside." And Staralfur was just beautiful- this movie introduced me to Sigur Ros.
Watch it, now!
-
I think it was the espresso machine that killed me. [/communicating from beyond the grave]

For the record, Filipinos have WAY better aim than represented!
<---- Filipino, and was stunned to hear my native tongue in the film!
'course, now my friends tend to refer to me as "pirate".
arggh.
-
Yeah, the movie's pretty good. Amazing music and scenery, but for some reason it didn't affect me much emotionally.
The few tagalog phrases the pirates speak are pretty insignificant XD; They only said stuff like "bring the kid over here!"
But yeah, the pirates? Awesome.
Although technically wouldn't think that Filipino pirates would speak Tagalog, since despite the fact that Tagalog is the official language, it's pretty much the language that urbanites and people in Luzon speak. Not that many people in Philippines speak Tagalog, especially ones from obscure pirating lands! But maybe I'm wrong. </being picky picky>

I just saw a commercial directed by Wes Anderson and he was walking around the set while filming it and man. I thought he was an old guy, but he's pretty young.
-
I'm just now re-watching this.. I'll check credits later, but I didn't realize Clous was William Dafoe... geezuz.
